Why come to Bay Street? Get the HUGE martini book and start drinking! Some of the martinis come in a large martini glass, but the more classic martinis come in a smaller glass with a side car to keep it cool. Haven't seen that for years but a nice touch. The food is solid, nothing mind blowing, but good portions for the price since they come with salad, bread, and the sides. I enjoyed the pork chop more than the fillet. Though the best thing was the scallop. Going back in couple days, hope everyone recovered from the big birthday bash! read more

As perfect a meal as one could have! I'll keep this brief though it deserves a small book to describe our experience. Service from hostess to bill was was excellent. We never waited for anything and the server was friendly and helpful. We started with a Cucumber Basil and Gimlet Martini with the best Crab Cake in the greater Rochester area. My wife had the Louisiana scallops and shrimp and I had the Prosciutto wrapped Swordfish. My fish was so good with the crispy Prosciutto around a huge piece of fish. The wife's seafood perfectly cooked. The room was kind of loud but it is a Louisiana party themed restaurant. We will be back soon! read more

We visited The Bay Street twice while in Sodus recently. We had different experiences each time (although we sat at the same table) and ultimately enjoyed both. The first night Jim G. and I went with my brother and his wife. The place was having a huge birthday bash for Miss Dee, a fixture of the place who was celebrating 50 wonderful years! The bar was packed, though the restaurant was a bit empty on the earlier side. The party seemed to make things a bit stressful, as our server Julie did not seem to be in a good mood at first. I'd like to think I ingratiated myself to her as we went along. In fact, when we returned a couple days later with my dad, his wife, and her son and daughter-in-law, Julie was our server again and was infinitely more pleasant. (Less hectic of an evening and we tipped well the first time). In addition, Julie told us that when we were there on Thursday, our table set the 'record for the season so far' as far as how many martinis we ordered. Now that's a record I am totally down for having!! That is my favorite part of The Bay Street: the Martini Book! It's really a huge book, which is not ideal for someone indecisive like me! Some of the martinis are more old-fashioned and come in a smaller glass with a little side car in an ice bath; others are more tropical-inspired and are served in a huge martini glass; others are dessert in themselves. I had some of all of them, lol! When Dee came over so we could wish her happy birthday and cheers her, she was prepared with a shot; all I had was the rest of my martini, so bottoms up! As for food, throughout the two evenings, people in my party really enjoyed the Frenched Pork Chop, the Shrimp Newby, and the soup of the day (Cajun Chowder). Almost everything people ordered comes with salad and sides, so the portion sizes end up being pretty good. To be honest, we thought the food was fine, but nothing amazing. We are pretty spoiled with so much ridiculously good food in Los Angeles. In the end, we enjoyed many delicious martinis, had some friendly banter with both Julie and Dee, and had two nice meals. The people watching is also pretty epic! I only wish we had noticed the shuffleboard table in the bar before we were walking out on our last night! I imagine hanging in the bar could be a fun time. From the start, our service was friendly and welcoming, the waitress and bar staff were both attentive and professional. Our drinks were well made, and if we weren't driving we certainly would have taken better advantage of their large martini list. *I'll take this opportunity to point out the elephant in the room, the decor. Historic hotel meets Florida kitsch. You will see. The menu itself is limited, but the specials added variety. We loved the lobster soup of the day. Pairing that with bread and large salads with homemade dressing made for a great starter. We followed with well prepared steaks for our dinner, but weren't able to choose our sides- I would have preferred to. A hidden gem at Sodus Point! We indulged in some amazing food in a friendly environment after a day on the boat. We've driven by for years & so happy we stopped today. I made a last minute reservation and highly suggest to call for a reservation. Limited hours so call ahead. My husband enjoyed the soup special, oyster soup. We split the fresh roasted garlic bulb appetizer served over spinach. The swordfish seafood special for the day was amazing. Main entree came with a house salad. I enjoyed the best crumbly blue dressing on my house salad. The staff is warm, welcoming, personable & very attentive. The quality of food and exceptional service certainly matched the price. We'll definitely be back! And, will try a martini upon our return. They have a nine page martini menu! Make a reservation and enjoy. read more

One thing that would make this place improved would be adding to open table or another online reservation site. I tried for hours, calling to make a reservation and got a constant busy signal. We ate here on a Saturday night the dinning part was full so we sat at the bar which was totally fine with us. But our table was dirty and has this dirty table cover. Our table also wobbled and was unstable even with it being leveled by napkins. Our waitress was a very sweet women who was helpful and kind but they were busy so it took awhile to order and eat. We were given bread that wasn't toasted or warm. Our food was amazing. We had steak and seafood. No complaints what so ever on how good the food was. This review is applicable to the Bay Street Hotel restaurant, not the Back Ally Grill. (A previous reviewer gave a one star for this business in error). My wife of 10 years and I came here on our first date nearly 11 years ago and we've been back a few times since we returned last night and were happily surprised with some building improvements and the outstanding quality of food! The atmosphere is casual and adjacent to the bar area. Our meals came with a large garden fresh salad with homemade garlic croutons. My wife ordered the flounder dish while I had one of the key west specialties with andouille sausage, shrimp, scallops, mushrooms and peppers on angel hair pasta. We were both very happy with the portion size and quality for the price. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food! read more

Don't judge a book by it's cover! The rotted wood exterior may keep people out, but the totally unassuming Bay Street is up there with fine NYC dining - seriously. Just don't plan on anything swanky, unless you consider pink flamingos and palm trees high end decor! Unbelievable food and the best Martini menu you have ever experienced. Make sure you make reservations during the peak summer months or plan to eat elsewhere. If you like spicy food, this place is for you. Get the Soused Shrimp and Scallops or Rack of Lamb. My two favorites. Never had a bad meal here and have tried most of the menu. The only steak option is Fillet, which is the only downside to this place for me. I prefer a NY strip personally, or at least some selection as they have 3-4 Fillet options. Definitely go early and have one of their 88 martinis to get your buzz on. If you go fruity, they squeeze the juice right at the bar. Can't say enough good here. Best food within 100 miles, including Syracuse and Rochester. Enjoy. read more

This place makes me laugh thinking about it. I don't even know how to describe the exterior. Old wood, I guess. The sign doesn't exactly stand out. It was only by chance that I saw it. They do have a nice porch on the front of the building that I imagine would be a nice spot to have a drink during the summer after a long day of fishing. When you first walk inside, you go through the bar. It looks like a dive. Once you get past the uneven floors and the pool table, you get to the hostess stand. She then takes you to a dining room away from the bar area that is actually very nice. It's a small dining room, but it looks nothing like the bar area. This is probably a good place to mention that it probably is a good idea to make a reservation before you go. It filled up quick and without one, you could be waiting a while. Apparently this place does good martinis. I didn't sample any but they brought us an encyclopedia-sized martini menu with over 100 different kinds. I settled for the beer menu. Nothing on tap, which is disappointing, but a good amount of bottles. I had a Burning River from Great Lakes, to give you an idea of the selection. They also have a few wines and a full bar if whiskey is your thing. The food was outstanding. Seriously, what business does this place have being in Sodus Point? I had some diver scallops with a Key West salsa. Delicious. It came with some garlic mashed potatoes that were unbelievably good as well as some spinach and rice, which I also devoured. I also sampled a bite of a frenched pork chop someone at the table had ordered. It was really, really good. And I didn't even get a bite of the part that was stuffed with prosciutto and other delicious ingredients. We even ordered some desserts. They peanut butter ice cream and chocolate pie was fantastic and packed with enough sugar to power me through the hour-long car ride back to Syracuse. I have one gripe with the whole experience. There was a very long pause in between when we got our salads and when the entrees came out. It must have been an hour or more. The whole dining experience took around 3 hours. Granted, we enjoyed our time talking but there were a couple times when I was wondering what the hold up was. If you live in Rochester or Syracuse and don't mind driving a little bit, take a drive out to Sodus Point some Saturday in the summer. Walk around the little town a little, hang out by the water, and then have a meal that is better than 99% of the meals you'll have in either city. Just make sure you're not in a hurry. read more

Very good food, the staff was so friendly !!! It seems like a lot of people are "regulars", ( Everyone knows everyone). Great choices for food, my Wife and I both had Filet and lobster tail, (but with different sauces) they had 3 to chose from. The sauce goes on the Filet, I had bacon and Horseradish sauce. The sauce is thick , not runny. My Wife had Brie and a marsalla sauce on her's. We had garlic Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans, Both good !!! The Serving sizes are smaller, so get an App., unless your a light eater. The martini bar is when you first walk in, very cool looking, Key west theme. Rack of lamb was cooked perfectly, but had a weird mushy crust. Scallops were delicious but came with soupy rice that was not up to the standard of the rest of the food. My friends and I have been coming to the Bay Street 4-5 times during summer and fall for some years because of the food and service. We have always had a superb meal. My friends like the martini selection which is huge, while I tend to stick with a mixed drink. The lobster and fillet is a perfect size and well cooked. If I could give this a zero, I would. We planned coming here over a week ago because my boyfriend raved about their martinis. We came here for my birthday. And let me just tell you... no bueno. We pulled in, I got out of the car, to have a group of people on the porch tell me don't bother. They said they were closed. 10:32 pm. Now as it is a Sunday, I made sure to check their hours ahead of time. So last night we checked and it said they were open until midnight. And for a Sunday that makes sense. But being someone who's in the industry, I do have to admit one of things i love most about my job is our consistency. Often I have customers tell me "well you should close early if you're not busy" but like my bossies say, and I agree 100%, it only takes one time for a customer to pull in, find out you closed early, and will never come back again that late on that said night. We pulled in, I stepped out of the vehicle to get told to get back in because they closed. I said "really? We even checked online ahead of time" to be told with a smart ass remark "you shouldn't believe everything you read online". So being annoyed as I was, I asked "what time did you actually close?" To be told 1030. I looked at the clock in the car and it said 10:32. Eff off. All I wanted was a key lime martini because I was told how amazing it was. I then drove 45 min for sarcastic, rude employees drinking on their porch. Great. Thank you. Never again will I ever try to visit this establishment yet alone try to recommend it to anyone. Also is it just a coincidence that tonight they changed their hours online??? Or did they know that they had two bad reviews coming their way. At the end of the day, consistency is key. Thank god where I work, whether we're slow or not, our hours don't change due to laziness. Also this is my first yelp review which should just stress how pissed I am with this place. Captain jacks is right down the street and the bartender is way more friendly than the poop service I got from this place's porch. Absolutely love this place! We have come here at least 2 times a year for probably the last 8-10 years. Every time we have experienced amazing, innovative food, beautifully prepared and our party whether it was 6 or 10 people were served together and everyone was VERY happy with their food. Whether it was filet mignon or seafood the portions were generous and delicious. The service is impeccable. This is one of those places that you leave feeling like you had a good experience.
