Delta Airlines put us up in this quaint inn. The service rivaled the best hotels in terms of attentiveness and an eagerness to please. Every single employee was friendly and helpful. They genuinely want you to enjoy your stay. This is the oldest hotel in the islands according to the proprietor Phillip. While it was showing its age in areas, the room was spacious and clean. The beds were comfortable, and everything in the bathroom was in working order. We enjoyed the lush foliage on the property and the mountain views. A continual breakfast of bagels, yogurt, Kauai coffee and fresh fruit was a great start to our days. They also offered complimentary towels, chairs and umbrellas for our beach day. In the evening, there was live music. I very much enjoyed my stay at the Kauai Inn.

Steps down from our tiny patio into the larger communal yard area(?) I didn't want to walk out there and ... yeah.

A small but island-chill place to stay. The charm, feel, and ambience of the inn were just what I needed. It was a home-y island kind of feel especially at night. The lights and music in the courtyard with all the beautiful plants were lovely. (We checked-in late and fell in love with the place, and saw a cat. A cat? A cat, you say? Why, yes! Have you not heard? They're just one of many animals around this Inn. Peacocks, peafowl, cats, chickens, roosters, chicks, lizards! I had a fabulous time just hanging out and watching them all in our grass area out the back door. We got in and one of our lights was out which was fixed right away. We noticed after we were just about to check out the AC on the wall unit was dripping inside the room. Staff was very friendly but so is everyone really. When we needed it, they helped quickly. Great place for the price point.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kauai Inn. This is a unique place to stay with its own character and charm, the staff is extremely nice, and it offers a great value. To set expectations, know that it's not a resort. It's more like a little motel village, tucked away within a valley surrounded by towering green mountains and lush Hawaiian foliage. If you like animals, you will love this place. There are numerous wild chickens, roosters, cats, and peacocks that roam the property and will be happy to be fed (or steal) any spare food you might have. The property does ask guests not to feed the animals, as some might consider them a nuisance. Full disclosure, a chicken did steal a croissant off our breakfast table one morning, which we thought was hilarious. Don't worry too much, though - staff patrol the area with squirt guys at the ready to fend off any would-be thieves. There is ample parking, a small swimming pool area, and a 24/7 Keurig coffee bar. The continental breakfast is pretty decent as well, with fresh fruit, croissants, bagels with cream cheese, muffins, high-protein yogurt, and cereal. My wife and I wanted eggs for extra protein, so we went to the local Costco our first day and got some microwaveable egg bites. The rooms come equipped with fridges and microwaves, so that worked out perfectly. Room service is really fast. They have outdoor movie nights on Saturday evenings using a projector and giant screen, which we could see as fun for families with kids. Lastly, we appreciated that the property offers free beach supplies during your stay. They provided us with beach towels, chairs, and an umbrella that proved extremely useful during our trips to the beach. Why not five stars? There are a couple of things the property could improve upon. First, the lodging is a bit dated and could use some refurbishing, which it looks like they're in the process of doing. It seemed pretty clean, just well-worn. Additionally, the air conditioning units for each room are quite loud, to the point that we considered sleeping with ours off, even though we were hot. Lastly, roosters like to wake up at 3:00am and they believe everyone else should too, so you may want to bring earplugs, though it didn't bother us. All in all, we very much enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back! It's a great value and felt like home by the time we had to leave. It's not the Ritz, and in this case, that's a good thing. Mahalo!

This lovely retro hotel is quaint and charming. The owners and the help are very personable and accommodating. They serve a very nice continental breakfast. We had the Mountain View king room. Beautiful view. Live music three nights a week and a movie night are all complimentary.

Named this cat kyle. He's the sweetest one out of all the cats

King Room was clean and spacious. Breakfast here was nice and simple, liked the fruits and 24/7 coffee and tea! Wifi connection is amazing was able to scroll online w no problems. View of mountain was beautiful and pretty upkept for being one of the oldest hotels on kauai!

This place is very humble and charming. Away from the city but not too far. Dated rooms but I liked them. The view of the mountain behind was very beautiful. Breakfast is provided, with coffee, tea, pastries, toast, yogurt, and apple sauce. I would give the place 5 stars, but... 1. There are chickens all over the place, and the roosters will wake you up every morning likely before you would want to. I imagine this is an issue throughout the island. 2. We came back one night and our room key did not work. I went to the lobby wondering why we couldn't get in our room, and was told that they changed the locks and was given a new key. We had gone to the lobby earlier that day and they didn't feel like giving us a heads up apparently.

Shows 2 large tables and a large chair on the left side of the king size bed making it impracticle to get out of the left side of the bed.

Kauai Inn is a dump!!! Do NOT stay here! We paid $2,321.99 for 6 nights ($387 avg per night). The bathtub/bathroom was disgusting. When we entered the room, it had a really bad smell. There was so much furniture in the small room we couldn't even walk around the beds. They had 2 large tables and a large chair on the left side of the king size bed. If you wanted to put your clothes in the dresser drawers you had to move the twin size bed AND large chair to access it. The photos online don't look anything like what our room looked like. I think someone is putting A LOT of fake reviews online. I don't see ANY way possible that many people can give this hotel over 4 stars. This place was so bad we checked out after 2 nights and we couldn't get our money back because we had to pre-pay in advance. Now I know why. When you look at reviews online look at the ones with 1 star. This is more accurate of our experience. Even the 1st floor rooms have stairs to get up to the room. I'm posting photos online of our room on the websites that allow reviews with photos.

If you're headed to Kauai , why would you stay anywhere else? The wifi is weak here and it looks nothing like the city which you're likely in need of a vacation from. Sure you could stay at a chain hotel and have nicer amenities - but who goes to Kauai for amenities? Go to Kauai and live the slow Aloha island life and do it with a stay at the Kauai Inn where your alarm clock are the roosters and your gym/amenities are the breathtaking scenery which surrounded you.

wife and I spent a week here. the stay was very nice. This is not a big resort but a place that has a real island feel and the folks there make your stay very nice. The local fauna is everywhere Roosters will wake you and cats chickens, ducks, peacocks, geckos and frogs will join you by the pool. You get to know the staff and other guests at bfast and evening music. Not a fancy place but very clean nice rooms.

I can't say enough good things about this place, the owner (Philip), and his staff! I was there with my husband for three nights, and I liked the place better and better each day! We encountered at least seven staff members during our stay, and all of them were very professional and friendly! This is not a fancy hotel. It's cute, quaint, inviting, retro, comfortable, and cozy. If you like super modern, sleek, austere, sterile, colorless rooms with industrial-style decor, that's not the Kauai Inn. My husband and I loved this place because it feels homey. The beds are comfortable, and the amenities are many. The staff and owner are extremely accommodating! Also, I was surprised to see that they have beach towels available to borrow for free! There is a large yard behind the hotel where you can play games like cornhole, tetherball, and Frisbee golf. They also have a putting green back there. The view of the mountain behind the hotel is spectacular! I really felt like we were staying in a remote area, even though the town of Lihue is very close by. Other reviewers complained about the industrial area near the hotel. If you don't want to drive by that area, you can enter the hotel from the other side. There is a back road you can take that offers views of island trees and greenery instead of the Nawiliwili Harbor and surrounding area. One of the things I enjoyed most are the animals on the grounds. There are a couple of resident cats (Capone is very friendly!), and of course roosters and chickens. Free earplugs are available in the lobby if you don't want the roosters to wake you up. I also saw a mama duck and 15 ducklings in the field behind the hotel. She crossed the road with her ducklings right next to a sign that reads, "Duck crossing." It was very amusing and entertaining to watch that scene! There are peacocks living across the street, and I enjoyed hearing their "meows." They sounded like cats to me. Sometimes the music near the pool was a bit loud for my taste, but we could barely hear it from our room, which was #201. If you don't want to hear the sounds near the pool, just ask for a room that isn't close to it. The Kauai Inn was a fun experience for my husband and me because it felt like stepping back in time a bit. We don't care for the ultra-modern, cookie-cutter hotels. The Kauai Inn has character, and that's a rare find these days. We definitely plan to return to the Kauai Inn, and hope to stay longer next time!

We called the front desk and they sent someone up right away and they mopped the entire unit. The floor was still sticky even after the thorough mop. Being too tired to deal with it, we just put on our socks and "lived with it the first night". What followed after is what really impressed me. The following morning, we got a call to check in to see if everything was ok, and if there was anything they could do for us. I brought up the floor again, and immediately someone was in our room to "assess" the situation. They then asked if it would be ok if someone could come in a buff the floor. We were headed to the pool so we accepted. When we came back, the floor was 100% better and the staff continued to call and check on us, follow up and make sure that our stay was going well. This is the kind of customer service that really impresses and made the rest of stay amazing! Besides the floor situation, this hotel was amazing. Our family had the best time here! It's a smaller and more quiet property than the large Marriott on the property, which was just our speed. The pool was well maintained with the best view of the cliffs and ocean. Our room had the most spectacular view! We had breakfast on the large lanai every morning. I loved that the glass "wall" opened up entirely to the lanai so that it felt as if we had an "outdoor" living room. We took full advantage of the on property activities that they offer throughout the day when we could, such as pond fishing, fabric flower making and smoothies. The staff were all very friendly, warm, helpful and personable. parking was a breeze. This was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had and can't wait to come back!

Coffee in the lobby area is only served on the weekends. However the coffee in the room is good as well. Highly recommend to get your groceries so you can cook in your room. We always stop by Costco to get food and gas which is by the airport. So go there first rather than going back. Hawaii is so beautiful with so many different properties. So I would not stay here again if I was coming back to this island.

We got to make use of their restaurants and giant pool, and enjoyed it. Founded in 1937, Sonesta International Hotels experienced rapid growth after purchasing the Red Lion Hotel Corporation in 2021. expanding from 80 properties to over 1,200. It's high end brand is Royal Sonesta (first one opened in 1969 in New Orleans). This location in Kauai was rebranded (previously Kauai Marriott Resort) as a Royal Sonesta in 2021, during the same time as its rapid expansion. Since the whole resort used to be branded as Marriott previously, most things in the complex are shared. We were provided a rubber wrist band that identified as us being able to use the Sonesta facilities. This included the pool. It is the largest single story outdoor pool not only Kauai but all of Hawaii at 26,000 square feet, with a flower shaped lagoon pool, all 4 feet in depth. There are 5 separate hot tubs, with most of them empty during the afternoon. The pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean with Kalapaki beach in the forefront. There is a manned towel station where one can pick up towels for use on both the pool area and the nearby beach, needing your room key and wristband. With all of this in place, spending a cloudy afternoon in the pool area was definitely worth a part of our vacation. Note that vacation club owners can set-up a house account with the Sonesta front desk, to allow charges for restaurants and shops. The entire complex is cash-less, meaning that one must credit cards if an account is not set-up.

To get the few negatives out of the way: The security team at the pool was borderline harassing us on days there was a ship in port looking for freeloaders and alcohol not purchased from the bar. Also, the sushi at Royal Lanai wasn't phenomenal and tasted very frozen. Those small things aside, We've been two times now, and we've had phenomenal experiences each time. My family and my wife's parents had stayed at this hotel more than twenty years ago and really enjoyed it, so my wife and I took the opportunity in April 2026 to make a return visit, staying for 6 nights at 1,350 points for a Parlor room (basically a hotel room with a Murphy bed...max 2 people)...plus a mandatory daily Hawaiian 'Villa tax' of $15.22. We really enjoyed our visit to the 'Garden Isle'. Back then, the hotel portion of the complex was a high end Marriott hotel. In 2021, the owners rebranded it to become the Royal Sonesta, which created a bit of confusion for me. What's important is that they are two separate entities, but letting guests/owners share things like the pool, lounge chairs on the beach, and fitness center. However owners can not charge anything to their room, instead having to create a separate Sonesta account to do so. Two things that jumped out were that the two large surface self-parking lots (complementary for owners) are quite a distance from the lobby entrance. And the check-in lobby for the vacation club itself is on the beach side of this large complex. In between is a beautiful and very large garden, with a koi pond and various retail shops. There is a large sundry shop, selling essentials along with snacks and food for comparable prices to other stores nearby. There is a free shuttle to the nearby airport, though we didn't take it since we had a rental car. So it is possible to not use a rental car, since there are two shopping centers within walking distance, along with multiple restaurants on the resort grounds itself. We stayed in a parlor (studio-style) room, and it was fine for the two of us. The bathroom was actually small for a hotel, with the walk-in shower being good with OK shower pressure but not really hot water. There is a kitchenette (full size sink, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, full set of flatware, glasses, mugs, pitcher for water, colander, tupperware for leftovers, blender). Also an apartment-size refrigerator with a usable freezer that kept our ice cream frozen. There are gas grills outside, which I noticed were daily cleaned by housekeeping. The room had a queen murphy bed, with a OK mattress. When hidden, the space is used as a couch. We found it much easier just to keep it down throughout our stay, since we were able to find space to put away the couch cushions out of the way...though a survival key became a way to minimize the number of bad toe stubs on the corners. Housekeeping comes at the end of your stay, though a cleaning can be added at additional cost. Garbage can be thrown out in nearby bins in the hallways. Self-service laundry is separate from the units, and was not even in our tower, but in an adjoining one. There is a small cost associated with it. It had a nice TV with a lot of basic cable channels (HGTV!) along with 3 Showtime channels. It's an older room so electrical outlets were at a premium, but they had put power strips behind the bed so was able to connect my machines next to my side of the bed without need for an extension cord. The private lanai had seating for two and a great unobstructed view of the ocean and beach (worth the upgrade to an ocean view). It's one of the best parts of the unit. We saw the NCL Pride of America come into the nearby Nilliwilli cruise port and stay for 2 days (Thursday and Friday). Important to note since the area gets a lot busier when the cruise ship is in town. The fitness center was good. Cardio equipment was older but in good shape. Had plenty of towels, but only had one disinfecting wipe dispenser, which was sometimes out. Huge yoga room with mats and equipment. Had a filtered water dispenser. The rooms were not created as a fitness center, but still had decent ventilation. The owners lounge is nice, with free use of a foosball table and a working air hockey table. It had working outlets and air conditioning so hung out there in the afternoon after checkout since our flight was at night. In terms of resort activities, it's pretty limited during the shoulder-season when we came. Staff interaction was OK, though in the beginning, the pushing of timeshare presentations ("500 points if you sign up!") by the concierges were prevalent.

Stunning lobby and view point! Friendly owners and visitors! Great pools - two infinity pools overlooking the ocean below the lobby. A jacuzzi is nearby. Two more pools are located at the neighboring building, with waterfalls from one pool into the other. In the middle of these pools is a lava rock jacuzzi. Homes include 3 and 2 bedroom condos and ocean facing townhouses with private plunge pools. Tiki torches light up the property at sundown with the sunsetting behind the mountains. Hula shows are every Friday night, with monthly and holiday special hula. Sunrises at the infinity pools are spectacular! Hungry? The onsite restaurant, Hualani's, serves breakfast lunch and dinner. And the food is fantastic and delicious! Many items come from the local Hokuala Farm. And the views from the restaurant are amazing! Similar to those from the lobby, which is just above the restaurant. Onsite fitness facilities and a small spa for massage, complete the experience. A kids or keiki room with activity staff offer coconut paint, games and more. Activities staff also offer e-bikes, conventional bikes, bogey boards, snorkel gear, beach chairs, beach umbrellas and more. Concierge staff can book you on helicopter, napli coast tours and more. Plus, the concierge staff are so friendly and helpful for anything you need, like restaurant, beach and off property activity recommendations Two beaches are close by. One, Kalapaki, is a short walk away. Or, have the bell staff drive you there. The other beach, Ninini - also known as Running Waters, is below the property and available by hiking over a small lava field. The hike is not for everyone, nor is entry into the ocean at the small beach. Yet, I love it and am at the beach and in the water almost everyday. I'm a fan! So is Jamie! Highly recommend!

In the beginning, the opportunities for kids activities was very slim. It has improved, albeit not everything is complimentary, so know that a head of time. There is no kids club that you can check your kiddo into, it's not like that at all. It would be so nice if they offered a 2.5-3hr hr program even just two days a week for ages 6-14 ex: 30-45 min tennis lesson, fishing 45 min, tea leaf bracelet making/shell necklace making etc. w/ simple kid lunch optional. Hualnai's restaurant service and menu are excellent. Oshi was our favorite! He's great with families. formerly. Note: no beach access from property you walk a short hike down the straits to the rocky outcrop. To massive tidepools. Not recommended to do solo. As in I'd want 2 adults w/ 2 kids kinda thing. Waves can get high and kids should ALWAYS be supervised there. Never turn your back on the ocean. It's beautiful but dangerous. A Timbers shuttle can take you nextdoor to/from Kalapaki beach. Say hi to Larry! Ask at concierge. It's a 5 minute ride. Timbers used to provide w/o asking cold water bottles in shuttle. Just ask if you want some. Timbers also has towels (I believe they still have fold up backup chairs) for beach to borrow. Just ask them. The prettiest teal buggy used to be offered to zip small groups to the beach but now it sits all day for sales reps. The upper family pool is now monitored via security camera and also no longer has pool toys to use or things to borrow (pails buckets for beach). All that is gone I was informed. Also, lunch/drinks no longer offered / no pool attendants at upper family pool. Call down to the restaurant Hualanis and put in an order and walk down yourself to pick it up is the only option. Poolside and bar service is still offered and lower pools. We're looking to visit Maui or Oahu next time. Overall it is beautiful and worth a stay but highly recommend doing things off property if you have kids ages 7yo and up.

From the perspective of a lifetime Hilton loyalist who has stayed in many Hilton Garden Inns in my…read moretime, this is better than most. It has all of the requisite HGI necessities such as clean, standardized rooms, available breakfast made to order, and a price point that does not break the bank compared to big resorts on Kaua'i. I had a comfortable stay here with easy parking, a comfortable room, and good wi-fi. It doesn't hurt that you can see the ocean from some rooms and that the property grounds have some unexpected nice touches such as a koi pond water feature, a spacious airy lobby open to the outside, and easy self parking for a fee. In this genre of Hilton portfolio hotel, it hits a bit above its expected weight. What keeps it in the 4-star range (instead of 5) is its location. It is relatively near Lihue and the airport (about a 12-15 min drive) but far from any of the major resort spots that Kaua'i is really known for (like Poipu or Princeville). Its location is just a couple of minutes drive outside of Kapa'a and if you are not looking for a high end vacation resort experience, this will suffice as a place to lay your head with confidence while helping you respect a moderate budget. It is not cheap by most HGI standards but it is reasonable by local Kaua'i lodging standards. A rental car is a must if you choose to stay here because there really is nothing around you within easy or safe walking distance. That is a problem if you are here to be a tourist and see some sights and places that The Garden Isle is known for. It is this location that keeps the pricing here down but the inconvenience factor high. I liked this property for what it was and I would stay here again if my reason for coming to Kaua'i was for anything other than a higher end resort experience. I'm sure there are even cheaper places to stay on this island but then again, I don't think that the Salvation Army has a loyalty program or a koi pond.

When we went to check out and cancel our week reservation, they didn't even try to remedy any situation. We are Diamond Hilton member's and there are pretty much zero perks for us loyal customers. Still had to pay $25 a day for parking! Like....come on. Pro: bed was comfy We ended up booking a airbnb instead. So we'll be paying a little more for our trip, but its worth it. Especially how easily the meat fell off the bone and the flavor that warmed the heart and soul. By far my favorite food stop in Kauai. And I'd come back to visit just for their food! Hubby and I were recommended by a local to try this place for their macadamia nut pancakes (which were good) and the oxtail soup (which we didn't try as we wanted breakfast)... Upon entering, no proper greeting just a yell from across the dining room from a lady pushing a cart "how many" and then proceeded to point to an empty table. Next, our server came around asking if we would like coffee..yes please! I had to track her down for some sweetener and when I asked for the sweetener she acted as if I was bothering her as she handed it to me. Mind you, I had just heard her tell a different lady who went up to to ask her for something as well to "go have a seat, I'll be right there" :/ I understand this is a busy restaurant but I do feel they need to work on their customer service! Hubby got an omelet that was very runny and ended up making him sick. I ordered the Macadamia nut pancake and it was good! I chose to leave 2 stars for the pancake alone! We will not be back to this restaurant. I think if they were more friendly and cook their omelets a bit more, this could have very well been a 5 star review.

Funny . . . Carol became spoiled after staying with me at such a wonderful vacation retreat! No wonder Carol wanted to experience more quiet solitude verses staying in the dorm rooms at Kauai International Hostel! Besides, the Kauai International Hostel was booked solid, so Carol had no choice but to stay at this little hotel on Rice Street. The room Carol rented had a very small room: bed, a very tiny bathroom, microwave, and a little refrigerator-that's all. Heading towards Lihue, no less than a block away from Motel Lani is a dynamite Chinese restaurant that Carol and I had the pleasure enjoying their fabulous chinese cuisine. Motel Lani is conveniently located close to the US Post Office, grocery store, about 1 1/2 miles from the Nawiliwili Beach where Duke's is located and two miles from the Lihue Mall Shopping Center where Costco is located.

He offered a dinner to Ocean House as well as breakfast for our party of 6. We took them up on their offer for dinner but ended up declining the offer for breakfast as it was too early and that was our last day at this resort and we needed to situate by packing up etc. The dinner was lovely and the food was delicious. I would rate higher but I simply cannot knowing how incompetent the manager was in handling the entire situation and making guests feel belittled and obsolete. I do thank Kelton (Director), Christine (GM), the Ocean House staff, and the other Outrigger staff for their service. I cannot completely say their service was not appreciated as it was but there definitely needs to be further training provided to staff, especially at the front desk and towel/pool area. We do plan on visiting Kaua'i again (as we typically do every year) but we more than likely will try a different resort due to this entire experience. I do not want to dis-credit Kelton's efforts as it is truly appreciated but staff training needs to be co ducted so that they can perform at or close to Kelton's level of customer service. I can understand why he is the Director of Rooms as his professionalism truly did show through. Mahalo.

Please read before booking via Southwest Vacations or any other 3rd party!…read more I have stayed at the Outrigger in Oahu a couple of times and it was GREAT! This resort is in the middle of a remodel, it will be for some time so unless you don't mind saws, jackhammers and dumb detours just to get around you might think it's ok. Our room had a very nice view and was clean although a bit dated and tiny bathroom space. Now, let's talk about the "resort" fees. If you booked through a 3rd party, such as Southwest Vacations like we did, as soon as you try to check in they state daily resort fees were not included in our package and we must put them on a credit card $35.00 + a day! You get nothing in return for these charges, then add on $29.00 a day for Self Parking (which you much have a car because the resort is not within walking distance to ANYTHING). So the first 10 minutes after our arrival cost us about $600 additional dollars! Huge red flag should have been the hokey temporary entrance and portable toilets right out front. The prices of everything are extremely high for the quality, service and products you get. i.e. $15.00 mai tai in a small plastic cup at the pool bar?!? Not worth it.
