I have a feeling we got the worst room because we only booked one night, which is understandable. The staff is great, but our room was truly yucky. It had the smell and grime of having had a long history as a smoking room. We weren't able to manage humidity and temp. There was significant road noise. The grounds are nice, with good parking, and it's in a great location. I'm betting (hoping) the ocean side rooms are in better shape. read more

Everything. From the busted toilet handle, to the noises from the toilet with the busted handle. Then there was the air conditioner, well the wall unit that pretends to be an air conditioner. I lived in Oahu, understood the humidity, but when at a resort...well I thought keeping the guests comfortable was important. Day two our television stopped working, it took four people to get it working, alas it did. I rented a bike, it was fun till I was riding down a steep path, yeah the breaks didn't work out that well. We had a very pleasant stay here at the coral reef resort! The staff is very welcoming and accommodating with every need. The free bike rental was a plus! Got up early every morning And got on the bikes to explore. The beach chairs they provided were so nice and free too!!! The rooms are very spacious and relaxing. Customer Service 5/5 : the lady helping my family and I were super nice, welcoming, accommodating to our needs, gave us great information about the hotel as well as the surround areas around it. The hotel has a lot of history which is on a pamphlet they give you at check in. Hotel itself 4/5 : the hotel inside is a-little out dated but it didn't put a damper on our vacation. Every room pretty much had an ocean view. We also had a balcony so it was nice just hearing the waves from the ocean. The room had everything we needed (ex: a comfy bed, toiletries, fresh towels, mini fridge, microwave, tv, ice machine, air conditioning, etc). They also have a private pool for the Guests which can be accessed by a code, it's a beach front property so literally you are next to the beach so perfect for morning walks, etc. they even offer you bikes so you can explore around the hotel. Parking I would honestly give it a 3/5 : very limited stalls that get taken up fairly quickly. This was the only issue we had while staying here. Would I stay here again? Yes! Don't stay here unless you want to arrive to check in and learn that your room was given away. On September 19, 2025 my aunty had a reservation for 2 double beds. My mom and dad was rooming with her for the weekend and that's why she booked a double bed room. They were then told by the front desk worker Alisha that they only had a king bed. My aunty called two days before to confirm they had their reservations and Alisha said yes two beds. Showing up from Oahu to find out the day of that Alisha switched the room to one king bed knowing their were 3 people staying in the room caused chaos. My parents trying to find a room the day of because three adults trying to fit in a king bed made no sense. But Alisha did not care and also told my mom "I'm not dealing with this." Awful customer service no one came out to solve the problem. My mom was furious as anyone would be knowing they would have to sleep on the floor for a night. Luckily I came in on Saturday and my parents got to stay with me at a different hotel with their own bed because my parents didn't want nothing to do with CORAL REEF. Do better Alisha and staff very unprofessional. read more

The room was dirty, even beyond what I would expect from Hawaii. I noticed the toilet and bathroom floor wasn't clean when I first entered the room. The coffee maker still had used coffee inside it. I didn't make a big deal of this. The next morning I found multiple cockroaches in the room. One ran and hid squeezing into a hole next to the bathtub. There was another up along the top of the ceiling. And another was on the bathroom curtain as I was taking a shower. When I asked to be moved to a different room, the only option the manager gave me was to upgrade to a more expensive room and go back to the same room my last night or go somewhere else. I decided to leave. I hear the ocean facing rooms are better, but for the going rate, I would pay a little more and stay at the nearby Kauai Shores. read more

If you like staying in a place with sewage on the floor, this is the place for you! The toilet in our room overflowed on the third day of an eight-day stay and flooded a good portion of the room. The staff brought towels to soak up the mess and very rudely informed us that the problem was our fault. I informed them we didn't place any foreign objects - or too much toilet paper - in the toilet. (We didn't - I'm 70 years old and know how to use toilets!) Nonetheless, they refused to move us to another room, or to secure another place for us to stay for the night, and refused my request for a refund so I could find another hotel, at least for that night. They purported to sanitize the floor, but the carpet remained wet (and smelled). I'd steer well clear of this place! Update - they finally reluctantly agreed to a refund for the remaining nights. read more

And when I called the after hours she just said "sorry we are sold out.:.I don't clean the room..." no ownership. I suggested she spend the night in one of their economy rooms. I read reviews. This really is a no frill motel. As long you don't expect Ritz Carlton you will be fine. Yes, everything is a bit outdated. We came on a down pour Christmas Eve 2019 and the whole parking lot was flooded. There's additional parking on the back behind the juice store. There's no elevator to our room on the 2nd floor with our two heavy suitcases. But the motel is perfect for walking distance to many great restaurants in the area. The grandma owner makes the most delicious banana bread every morning. They have water and tea available til I think 9pm. Although the room is small, there's a fridge and microwave for you to use. They have fluffy big beach blankets for you to borrow. We also took advantage of the free bikes and rode up and down the coastal bike paths just out in the back. If you are out and about enjoying Kauai, you won't be long in your room. read more

The location is great, staff is very friendly and helpful, and the amenities are great. It's an older place and could definitely use a little TLC and better cleaning. We also had the displeasure of being roomed next to very loud people yelling, slamming doors, and fighting. And you can hear everything through the paper thin walls. Even with three different locks on the doors, I still felt unsafe and it sounded like people were coming into our room instead of next door. Definitely not worth the price per night! read more

Great experience!!! Small, open and cute resort. The stuff is very helpful and hospitable. They upgraded our room without any extra cost. We could use all the facilities, including pool, ice machine and laundry. Everything was sparkling clean. Even after the check out we were able to use their space to keep our extra bags in the lobby and explore the town. They let us use their bikes. Sorry to say that we stayed a few times before and didn't notice how filthy the rooms were and how non responsive the staff was to issues. Pros: great location, beautiful sunrise and staff was nice when we checked in. Cons: out all day and when we came back, live cockroaches bouncing everywhere, dead bug carcasses under bed and furniture, musty smell, no plugs on the sinks or tub, bare threads of portions left on rug, outdated furniture, dirty walls and door, toilet clogged if more than urine, towel bar falling off wall, cheap grooming products and dust and debris in corners. Wanted to love this hotel because of location, but please spend more on a better hotel! read more

We had to make last minute hotel plans so we started off at the Hotel Coral Reef with plans to end up at the Hilton using bonus points. We had such fun and a warm welcome at the Coral Reef that we stayed on and canceled our 2 free nights' stay at the Hilton! Auntie Peggy Sue makes banana bread everyday for her guests. Her laughter fills the reception area all day long. She is a treasure! Pall just started working here and is so outgoing that he makes you feel like a VIP. He can answer your questions about travel plans and tours. Peggy Sue's family all work at the hotel so this establishment embodies the true Ohana spirit. Mahalo for a great time! read more

This is a great Kaua'i hotel and resort to stay at, and I had a good experience when visiting the Garden Isle back in September 2019. The basic economy rooms are nice and cozy and have all the usual necessities, the front desk and office staff are excellent and accommodating, and parking isn't too bad overall. Prices are pretty reasonable, and their continental breakfast is great as well (just watch out for the wild chickens if you go out onto the patio, however!). read more

We just completed a our 2nd stay at this Motel; the first was in June of 2017. The location was and remains well situated for access to restaurants and shops in Kapa'a, as well as the trail that fronts much of the coast in this area. And room comes with a free cold breakfast, with good quality baked goods daily. Beyond that it is hard to find a positive, particularly when every day and almost everywhere one looks is a huge un-maintained mess from many of the details in the room, to the grounds. Examples: stoppers in sinks either missing or not operational, burned out light bulbs, safes either not operational or not bolted to wall, shutters broken in multiple ways (looks like every room on 1st and 2nd floors), chairs cracked and worn, the dryer in the (filthy) laundry room heats up clothes but no air movement for actually drying the clothes, lose or missing knobs on furniture, varnish worn off of furniture, springs worn out in mattress, trash piled up around bicycle area, bikes rusted out and barely functional. We stayed in a period of periodic heavy rain and one evening a large swath of the parking lot flooded; the sump pump which had been rolled up and unplugged was eventually repaired and the excess water was dumped into the street. This was a very nice and freshly remodeled place when we stayed here almost 3 years ago, but it has been missing a lot of very simple maintenance along with things that have not aged well (like the furniture and JACUZZI tubs) and it is really showing. I am very unclear on what happened; our inquiry to the staff blamed the absentee owners (was not the case 3 years ago). They recently added a 3rd story to the building (which uses curtains instead of broken shutters, so being newer the issues we had with our rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors might not be as pronounced). Another issue is that the staff generally cuts corners on servicing rooms, including being very stingy with extra requests (such as additional towels). Unfortunately after this most recent experience for a week long stay, I can no longer recommend this Motel despite the excellent location. read more

So I suspected this place was going to be a bit risky when I booked, but needed a "cheap-ish" option for one night. At first I thought area was kind of sketchy, but I gutted it out and checked in. The place is maybe adequate for a single night, but would have 100% checked out early if my stay was longer. Place was dirty and while walking to dinner just down the way the trash was NASTY. Wife swears she saw pregnancy tests on sidewalk and I certainly saw booze cans/bottles. Place was dirty also as others reported - I just didn't take pics. Topper is that after checkout they tried to charge me extra for dirty washcloths claiming I used them to clean muddy boots or mop blood or who knows what else. News flash - wash cloths get dirty when you use them to take a shower. Mold - no problem. Roaches - we don't care. Dirty tub - yup we got those. But don't you dare F with with our precious washcloths. What a joke. One of the worst hotel experiences in 40 years of world wide travel. read more

Run, don't walk, to get away from this hotel, unless you are traveling on the slimmest budget in the entire world. I booked this hotel on Expedia, thinking "good price, and Expedia has checked it out - rooms look nice - so OK!" Silly me. Because of this hotel, I will not book on Expedia again. (Reading this before posting: we are not delicate flowers, but experienced travelers). As we turned into the parking lot, I said out loud, "Oh God, is this it???" and it went downhill from there. We parked, picked our way through the trash in the lot (not a lot, but none of it should have been there), and into the office, where we were greeted by broken down furniture, and cans and bottles of things for sale on the counter. I must say first that the ladies who helped us were very nice and did their best(s), but I think they are in over their heads with that place. They pointed us to our rooms - up two flights of stairs, across a dirty and decrepit hall, down some stairs, and we were horrified when shown to our rooms; I was traveling with a friend. Having just arrived, we went first to our bathrooms, and ewwwww - I didn't want to sit down on the toilet. I looked at the tub - EWWWW; I ended up putting a towel down in the tub before I used the shower. There was dirt in the closet, and the discarded possessions of previous tenants, similar to what was under the bed in my friend's room. I could go on, but will just share the note we gave to the ladies when we couldn't take it any longer - after a bug dropped onto my friend's lap as she was sitting on her bed - and we packed up on the spot and found another place. Ewwww. "Aloha ~ We are checking out today because we found our rooms to be SO unacceptable. We realize you are under some pressure here and you have been as helpful as you could be. Our rooms are DIRTY. Sheets, floor, walls, bathrooms, closets, under the beds - everything is just dirty. The images shown prior to booking were grossly misleading, which I will report to Expedia. The pool shown in your photos was not available, nor was the promised breakfast. Although it was clear that hair dryers were available on request, we have not stayed in a hotel in years which did not have dryers in the rooms. You cleaned one room when requested, yet it was still quite dirty afterward. Being right on the road makes these rooms extra noisy - the door to the balcony (both of which were dirty), hardly opened and came nearly off the rails, and while it might have otherwise been ince to sit out there, the noise and dirt made it untenable. The AC unit in (one room) leaks onto the floor, bugs fell on us from the ceiling, the carpet was sticky - but that bug was the last straw. We know you're working under difficult conditions, and wanted to be fair and let you know ahead of time what we will be saying in our review. (Signed with names and contact info)." There is what appears to be the old part of the hotel (where we stayed) and a new part, where every room has a big picture window looking right over the ocean. We didn't see the inside of those, but believe the (marketing) photos were taken of those rooms - so the phrase "false advertising" comes to mind. The photos of our rooms show only the beds. Do not under any circumstances allow yourself to be booked into one of those rooms. They really were.... just.... awful. PS: Did I mention that it was *dirty*? And gross? We staid one night at this lovely hotel right on the beach. We were fully satisfied! The room was so nice and had an incredible view of the ocean and pool. The staff was the most friendly people and so accommodating. They were so helpful with if we needed towel for the pool or bottle opener. The pool was so cool with a waterfall and with a beautiful Kauai beach view. The staff made us feel like a family friend. I can't recommend this place enough and if I come back here I would definitely stay again! read more

**OCEAN FRONT SUITE IS THE WAY TO GO, YO** We love Kapaa. And we also love Art Cafe Hemingway in Kapaa. And then we discovered Hotel Coral Reef which was right across the street from our favorite cafe with ocean-front rooms. It was meant to be. We booked 9 months in advance for the following: (1) Ocean Front King Suite for us (2) Ocean Front King Suite for his parents 2 weeks before the trip, I called to check with the reservations. Rhonda, the hotel manager, said there was no reservations for his parents. I freaked the F out. WTF, seriously. I told her that this had to be resolved immediately. The hotel initially put his parents into the "Garden Room" which faced the parking lot and street. His mother referred to it as the "Awful Room". They spent one night there and was moved to an Ocean-Front King suite for the remainder of their stay. Every morning, we had fruits and juice in the hotel lobby area and then went to Small Town Coffee (down the street) for our coffee and heartier meal. Our room was OK. It's not a 4 or 5 star hotel. We expected that. They had the basic amenities: AC, towels, extra pillows, toiletries, etc. It reminded me of a worn-out Tommy Bahamas Best Western room except for the modern bathroom with the jacuzzi tub. That was nice. It faced the ocean and you can't beat that. However, the maid service was sloppy. The sheets did not appear to be cleaned and tucked. I get it, it's the Island Life. So, whatever. My MAC makeup eyeliner was missing after a maid clean-up. I am not accusing anyone of taking it. I am just stating that it was there in the room and now surprisingly, it was gone. That prompted us to secure our belongings in the provided safe. The staff was super friendly and cordial. Overall, I liked the hotel, but didn't love it. A bit too rough around the edges for me. RECOMMEND for those who don't mind a "motel" feel. The ocean-view from the balcony was spectacular for $159 a night. read more

So just stop searching for another hotel. This is where you will stay in Kauai haha forget the Sheraton, Princeville and Hyatt hotels. After much research by the gf we decided to stay here, for one its locally run and operated, its located in the heart of Kapa'a, lastly its a very beautiful and clean hotel (especially the beachfront suites, which is where we stayed.) Prices will vary on there website from $89 garden view suites up to $189 ocean front suites. (keep an eye out for specials, we got our third night free!) Bike paths from the hotel take you along the Kapa'a coast; if you feel like your pressed for time or just too lazy to walk the coastline, we rented bikes from the hotel and saw some very beautiful views that will probably rival any coast you have seen in your life. Photos are posted up top. All in all you have to give this place a shot and unless you're into the big named hotels this should be your place. Beautiful-clean rooms, awesome service, great location and did i mention the sun rises outside of the rooms? Can't beat it! Cute and quaint hotel right on the beach in Kapaa. It's easy to miss, but the rooms are great and have been recently updated. Soft comfy beds, AC, wifi, they serve complimentary breakfast and the staff is super friendly!! From the moment you arrive to the day you leave, they are kind, generous and very accommodating. It runs along the bike path, so there are people walking, running, biking or skating by. It's generally very peaceful and the path is super convenient for exercise or to walk to town. They also have a private pool if you don't want to swim in the ocean. The have a massage cabana right onsite so you can get an oceanfront massage in a peaceful place. We just completed a 12-night stay at the Hotel Coral Reef, and it was one of the best experiences we've ever had. First, the location for the price is the best value on the island if you like a smaller boutique type of hotel. We chose an oceanfront room on the second floor, and the view was awesome; the water was mere steps away, just across the bike path. The room was quiet, as the walls and floors appear to be concrete and not easy to penetrate with noise. During our entire stay, we never heard another person while in our room unless we were out on our lanai, and even then, we rarely heard anyone. An occasional door closing somewhere is about all we ever heard beside the occasional rooster crowing. As for the location in town, you could hardly do better if you like to be within walking distance of numerous restaurants and shops, and we took advantage of that multiple times daily. Other businesses are not far away at all by car, even in the very busy pau hana time (rush hour) traffic through town. Driving north out of town is a total breeze, so getting up to Kealia Beach is a snap by car or via the bike path. The hotel rents beach cruiser bicycles for up to two hours for free, and we also took advantage of that on two occasions because the path is a really wonderful ride up and down the beach. The building we were in is an older one for sure, but the owner and some investors are planning some awesome upgrades in the near future, including the addition of a third floor. But for the time being, the room, last renovated in 2008, was still fantastic. It was cute, clean, and had a relaxing Tommy Bahama feel to it. I sat frequently in the leather chair to work on my laptop, and we enjoyed sitting out on the lanai and watching the waves or reading a book. And the bed: One of the most comfy beds we've ever slept in, and we've slept at Ritz-Carltons, Hyatts, Hiltons, and Four Seasons hotels. Don't let the scratches here and there on the headboard disturb you. You'll get a great night's sleep here. The free wifi in the room was excellent. The A/C worked well, and so did the shower. We found the wet bar area with microwave and mini-fridge to be convenient. The mini-fridge ran so cold that it froze the hard-boiled eggs we stored in it, but it did fine once I turned the temperature level down between 0 and 1. The double sinks in the bath area was a super great idea; however, it does eliminate the ability to store much on the counter, and it's a little tight for two people to be standing in there at the same time. Not a big deal, though. The shower is super nice and includes a Jacuzzi tub that we never used. That kind of tub makes it a little more difficult to get in and out of the tub in order to use the shower, but again, no big deal. The customer service at this hotel is amazing. I found three incredibly minor issues with the room, and the management had them fixed the next day when the maintenance guy was making his regular visit. If you read previous reviews that seem to indicate that service here is poor, that's because the hotel is run by different folks now. Chris and Karen have been managing the place since January 2016, and they are efficient, kind, service-oriented, and as filled with the aloha spirit as you are going to find anywhere on the island. We also loved "talking story" with Alicia at the front desk and with her mom, Peggy Sue, almost every morning in the lobby and sometimes a second time later on. Peggy Sue is the unofficial "ambassador" of the hotel and comes every morning just to chat with guests and make them laugh. She herself has a laugh as big as the world and a personality to match. She is kind and filled with aloha. She offers up her famous banana bread--and occasionally sweet potato mochi or tofu dredged in egg and spices. And this is in addition to the regular toast, granola, yogurt, doughnuts, juices, and fruit that are always in the lobby each morning as part of their "light bites" breakfast. Another young lady sometimes runs the front desk in the evening hours, and I didn't catch her name, but she, too, was friendly and customer-service oriented. We didn't take advantage of the free DVD rentals, but they have drawers full of them. The hotel can set you up with a beachside cabana massage for one or two, and we saw people take advantage of this. The Coconut Cup walk-up counter restaurant is in the same building, and they have a beauty shop and laundry room there, too. Again, we didn't need those, but it's nice that they are there. We did take advantage of the pool, though, which was crystal clear and clean with a super nice waterfall. You can see the ocean from the pool, which my wife always considers a plus. Chris and Karen are wonderful resources for things to see and do in the area, including local restaurants. We highly recommend this hotel if you're not in the mood for a sprawling resort. Living on the rock has its ups and downs. Island living is quite spectacular, but it comes with some challenges. When traveling inter-island, mainland, or abroad the ticket prices can be outrageous. Locals practice the art of 'StayCation'. This is common vernacular amongst long term Kaua'i residents. We take lots of little mini vacations, on island, throughout the year. Often my wife and I find ourselves sharing tropical cocktails, poolside, with travelers at a resort seven minutes from our home. The Hotel Coral Reef is a historic landmark of Kapa'a town. I believe it was the first accommodation of its kind in the Kapa'a area. Over 60 years old. Kapa'a was a pineapple canning town until the 70's. This hotel has stood the test of time as Kapa'a shifted to rely heavily on tourism in the 80' to today. Last weekend, my wife and I at StayCationed at the Hotel Coral Reef. We heard the resort was under new management. We also observed positive change around the property on previous weeks on the Kapa'a bike path. The location is stellar. Waking up to the trade winds blowing through the room is a memorable experience. Our stay was actually much better than we anticipated. The reservation process was a piece of hula pie, we were in our room 30 minutes after we reserved the space. The staff is professional and super friendly. We immediately felt like family. Rates are super reasonable compared to most other places we stay on island. The room was very clean. Cleaner than rooms we've stayed in at the Hyatt. Something we did not realize until actually being on location, is the amenities and extras the offer. Onsite they have local organic takeout food, hair/nail spa, and massage in a beachside cabana. Bike rentals and beach gear are provided to all guests. The bike path provides miles of exploration just outside your lanai. Overall Hotel Coral Reef is classy! This place has really cleaned up over the past few years. I feel like it's one of the best values on island. We will surely stay again. I would also recommend travelers to do the same. The rooms are literally a stones throw from the ocean. What sweet location! You won't be let down. read more

Hotel Coral Reef was a pleasant surprise. Ken and his staff were amazing, catering to our every need. The prices were very affordable and the views spectacular. The hotel is centrally located on the Kuhio Highway with walking access to the beach, shops and restaurants. The walking/running/biking trail is steps away from the property. Nothing particularly objectionable --- but easily the weakest of the three hotels we stayed at on Kauai. One was much more functional for a similar price; another was funky and charming; by comparison, Hotel Corel Reef felt lackluster and overpriced. Wi-fi is only in the lobby; figure on carrying your laptop through the rain in order to plan out your next day's adventure. One of the beds in our room had a broken frame, hilariously bolstered with a paint can. Two sink basins crowded into a small bathroom left little room for toothpaste and hair brushes. We did enjoy being right on the water, and almost across the street from the outstanding Art Café Hemingway; it's a short, easy walk to the main strip in Kapa'a. It was definitely nice to ditch the car and stroll to dinner, although the rarity of crosswalks required some planning on dark nights. Not objectionable, just lackluster. read more

At first glance it looks really nice outside and the reviews show a 4.5. How it's a 4.5 is beyond me. First off they over charged my account when I told them I wanted to check out 3 days earlier, with that they started to get a attitude with my wife. The Ac unit was dropped down to 59 degrees and the room was still blazing hot all night. They had stains on the bed, floor, walls, the jetted bath tub was broken and dirty. We were really nice to them and tried to see if they could work with us but they didn't want to once they heard we wanted to leave and check out early. When we noticed that we were charged for the 3 extra days we weren't there they refused to refund us our money and that's even after booking.com took care of it for us before. read more

I'll start with pros before I get into cons. Staff is friendly and place itself is super cute. Awesome free and fresh breakfast in the mornings with local fruit and juices and delicious baked goods. They are also going to be getting renovations which is great because they are very much needed. CONS. The room was filthy. At first look we thought it was cute - upon closer inspection we realized how unclean it was. There were stains on the pillow shams (which were laying on top of the regular pillows), stains on the ceiling, coffee maker had brown gunk on it, entire shower rod was rusted over making moving the curtain extremely difficult, the tub floor was pink, carpets a dark green/black floral print which just felt dirty. The blinds were missing a slat so the blinking light outside our room was also blinking inside our room. All. Night. The comforter felt old and dirty, and we decided not to use that or the pillows and use the extras in the closet. Except those were just sitting on the shelf and not in a plastic bag like most sleeping establishments. And given the rest of the room conditions, we didn't feel comfortable using those. So we slept without pillows or blankets, just a sheet. The mattress itself was comfy tho. Old, outdated rooms, are fine. Dirty ones are not. On top of that, there wasn't a phone so I couldn't call the front desk to complain. We checked in around 8:30pm, but it was storming outside, making the trek down to the office quite unappealing. I also think the office closed at 9pm, another reason we didn't go down to complain. Maybe we just got unlucky with our room because all reviews about this place are 4-5 stars on every website. Anyways, I did call and got a refund, but I don't think I would stay here again. read more
