We finally booked a cabin and stayed in Kokee. I have been wanting to do this for a long time and my husband who is local has never stayed in a cabin up here. We absolutely loved it and want to make this something we do every year with our son. Here is my advice anyone looking to book. If you have high expectations and are expecting new and up to date with IG aesthetics don't book. These cabins are old. But that's what gives them their charm. They supply you with everything that you could need in the kitchen and bathroom and bedding. My only complaints were the pans to cook in were a little rusty and need to be replaced and they need to mop the floors with a swift jet or something. Are socks were black after being in side for only a couple of hours after checking in. Things to bring. Bring lots of fire wood if you are going during winter/early spring. You will definitely want a fire constantly going to keep the cabin warm. We brought extra blankets. Also I would bring a few of my kitchen items next time for things to use for cooking that they didn't have. Even though they had almost everything you would need. Oh and coffee filters. I drink and make a lot of coffee. They give you prepackaged coffee already in a sealed filter but I also like to bring my own. All in all we had a wonderful experience and look forward to stay here again. read more

You know it's an incredible place when all of the wrong kind of people are giving it bad reviews. This place ain't fancy. They are cabins as cabins are supposed to be: wild and rustic. Wonderful getaway from it all!!! Check-in at the office in Waimea was efficient. Carol was very pleasant and helpful. The cabin was easy to find and very convenient to the Lodge if you want food or drinks 9:30-4:00. The cabin is basic, but has everything you need to be comfortable; plenty of hot water, wood burning stove, full refrigerator and cooking facilities. Fantastic location to connect with nature. One of our favorite activities is traveling to the canyon for beautiful hikes. It was an absolute delight to get to stay overnight at the cabins and have the hikes at our front door. The cabins are truly for those who want to "get away from it all" -- this is a cabin/camping experience so be sure to roll with that. This is not a high-end glamping experience. There is no Wifi or cell connection - which we loved because we really wanted to unplug. I feel the price to stay in the cabins was very fair for this reason & good value. The beds were remarkably comfortable and the shower temperate & pressure wonderful. We loved waking up and feeding the roosters (who themselves were up at 5 AM). Well, if you're coming from a beach side condo in Poipu to one of these rustic cabins in Kokee, your 12-year old is not going to be thrilled. Ha ha! Why? First of all there's no cell service or wi-fi and also there's no swimming pool or beach. The cabin's exterior is tired and the interior is clean and utilitarian. Be sure to pick up cooking supplies in Waimea town before heading up to Kokee, as the only place to dine closes at 4pm. We cooked all of our meals while we were in Kokee. It gets pretty chilly in Kokee at night, so recommend bringing long sleeve shirts and sweatpants for sleeping. There is a fireplace in the living room, but the warmth of the fire does not reach the bedrooms, and barely warms the entire living room. Be sure to pick up the firewood (Kiawe logs) at the rental office in Waimea town. This is also where you need to pick up the keys for the cabin before heading up to Kokee. Matches, newspaper and fire starters are provided from the rental office, but small tinder is not. Recommend using the small pieces from Kiawe logs at bottom of bag (or small dry branches found outside the cabin) to start the fire. Newspaper and fire starter alone will not be enough to get the Kiawe logs to burn. The crickets are pretty noisy at night, but that noise is nothing compared to the sound of multiple roosters crowing at 4:00 in the morning. We knew that Kauai is known for their chickens, but did not expect so many high up in Kokee. The main reason for lodging in Kokee was to be close to hiking trails. You do not want to drive up to Kokee, hike for hours and then have to drive back down. The objective of our time in Kokee was to hike the Alakai Swamp Trail. It isn't a long hike (distance wise) but it is rated by multiple websites as difficult or moderately challenging. We started from the parking lot at Pu'u o Kila Lookout which is the start of the Pihea Trail with amazing views into the Kalalau Valley. The trail is "moderately challenging" because the terrain is difficult (up and down, up and down) and is quite muddy. The Pihea Trail starts off dry and sunny, then the trail starts to get muddy and then you're surrounded by fragrant ginger plants, Ohia trees, with light rain falling and the songs of native Hawaiian birds in the tree canopy. Eventually, you'll come to a boardwalk which makes it a little easier to walk through the forest. It's a combination of boardwalk and muddy (slippery) hillsides most of the way until you hit the boardwalk for the Alakai Swamp Trail. The swamp trail is otherworldly. You're walking on a boardwalk over boggy terrain with a really light mist and fog hovering over the swamp. We were close to the Kilohana Lookout (at the end of the swamp trail), but decided to turn back and head back to our car. It had taken us 3.5 hours to get to where we were and we knew it would take at least 3 hours to get back (plus all the hikers that made it to the Kilohana Lookout told us that the view at end of swamp trail was fogged in and you couldn't see anything). It took us a little over 3 hours to get back to our car. The muddy hillsides and slippery terrain really slows your progress. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a rare Iiwi or Apapane bird on the hike, but we didn't see any on our way to the swamp. However, on our way heading back on the trail, I saw a flash of red fly across the Ohia canopy. It was an Apapane! Although it was a very brief sighting, that was the highlight of the hike! Tired, achy and muddy from our hike, we asked a tourist visiting from Texas if he'd take our "after" photo. Kokee is beautiful and the "no frills" lodging is unique, very much unlike the comfortable beachside resorts in Poipu. It was actually nice not having internet or wi-fi for a couple of days. Of course, at first my son was whining that he couldn't play video games or watch TV, but once we started hiking he forgot about his electronics. Recommend downloading OsmAnd Maps app and downloading map of Kokee before getting there. The app works using GPS and you can see where you are on the trails even if no cell service or wi-fi. A friend recommended that we bring hiking poles for this hike. It's a good thing that we did, they were useful on the muddy, hilly terrain. Hope to get back here and do the 12-hour Nu'alolo/Awa-'awapuhi Grand Loop Trail next time! read more

We had a great little staycation for my wife's birthday. Friends rented the connecting cabin and it was so nice to be off grid of cell phone reception, no distractions just real life, hikes, birds, chickens, making fires at night and spending quality time with friends and family. Highly recommend doing it at least once a year. I'm looking forward to the next excuse to spend more time up there. Mahalo for offering exactly what you do. It was a much needed escape. read more

This cabin need to be updated, like ASAP!!! First I just wanna say that I've stayed in other Kokee cabins before and they weren't nearly as bad as this one. This review is strictly based on THE RED WOOD - lliahi Cabin. This Cabin shouldn't be even be available for rent. This cabin seemed like it wasn't even cleaned and as you can see from the pictures there was a lot that was wrong with this cabin. When we got there we sanitized and wiped down the whole cabin. The toilet didn't even have the correct seat size on it. When you sat on the toilet your legs would touch the actual toilet bowl. So unsanitary!! The shower was so gross that you had to wear your slippers in the shower. The lamps that they had in there had duck tape on them. The pots to cook with were ancient and I refused to cook with them. The mattress had mildew on it. I was fortunate to bring a lot of items from home that helped staying here be a little better BUT seriously after paying $150 a night to stay in this horrendous cabin. It was NOT worth the money!! Take my advice.... You are Better off staying in a tent or at Waimea cottages or the Inn instead. They do have other cabins that are all little cleaner but this one just needs to be pulled off the rental list and renovated like ASAP! read more

This place was so great. Right in the park. Great location and great friendly service at the bottom of the hill in Waimea. Don't stay here if you get bent out of shape by a little rust on the side of a refrigerator, DO stay here if you want a perfect location and a beautiful cozy cabin in the middle of a beautiful park with a great location for hikes. We took our honeymoon here and would recommend it to anyone. We spent every day hiking and exploring and met the folks in Waimea for dinner, then were happy to return. read more

I would never stay here again. Maybe my expectations were too high. The check in at the office is off the main road, then you drive up 15+ miles up the canyons long and whine-dy road. We were not told by the most "charming" (eye roll) that we'd have to make our own bedding, which was cheap, ghetto, unmatched sheets. Carol had absolutely no bed side manners. We arrived at the check in office and she wore t-shirt and shorts like she just woke up from a nap. She also charged us $18.95 for a bag of wood to make a fire then only gives us 1 fire starter stick and was supposed to read her mind that we need to divide the fire starter stick with the number of nights we were staying there. The lightbulbs burnt out while we were there (10:30pm) and we can't call the office unless it's an emergency. There was no toilet paper in the cabin, the kitchen was so gross, dirty dishes, dirty counters, dirty stove and refrigerator We refused to use any of the utensils or kitchen appliances. Gross. My main issue was Carol, the woman we met at the office. You should always welcome your guest with the utmost courtesy since the front office is the first experience you have with the property. Management needs to significantly train better. I would never recommend anyone to stay here read more

One star for not providing advertised services, lackluster customer service and a pretty beat cabin. (Update: this is for cabin four. I did not visit the other cabins and they may be different.) We reserved a cabin with one queen sized bed (and two twin beds) and when we checked in, found it was a double. Granted, there are worst things in the world but at the end of the day, it's not anything to mislead people about. Had we known it was a double, we would have made an informed decision from the start. The cabin itself is pretty beat. While its old and you're in the middle of no where, there was quite a bit of damage to the windows and door frame. Also, the stove saw better days some generations ago. When I told the staff person about the bed situation, she said "oh, sorry, I'll tell (the manager)." That's not an acceptable answer but here we are. The cleaning lady also kept dropping by, starting at 10:30 -- 30 minutes prior to checkout -- and would stop by every 15 minutes. Checkout is 11 a.m. Just wait. I don't care what you think your schedule is. When we told the staff person about the cleaning lady, she said "ok" and then reminded us of the $40 cleaning charge. Folks, rent elsewhere or camp outside. The park is beautiful. Enjoy your visit and support the local economy. Thanks! read more

Highly recommended!!! Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 2 nights in December 2018, using it as our base of operations to explore the northwestern part of the island. They are rustic, cozy, and with a real island feel. Enjoyed our local rooster flock, which were fun characters to feed food scraps. Plenty of electrical outlets and space, and the cabins felt safe and secure. Well located for most of the best hikes in Kokee. Definitely being some firewood to use the cool woodburning stove. Only suggestion i'd make is adding low flow showerheads, so the small water heater lasts longer. read more

First of all, I am a full on towny from Oahu and not much of a camper since I was a teen decades ago. I gave 5 stars for the experience we had in this old rustic imperfect lovely cabin. My parents who were avid backpackers in their day wanted to visit the island of Kauai and stay at the Kokee Cabins located just before Kokee lodge for 3 days and 2 nights. They asked me to join them and be their driver. How could I say no? After obligating myself, I Yelped Kokee Cabins and when I saw the comment and pictures I went EEK!  The pictures of the cabin's bed and shower scared me. Too late to back out! Luckily my Mom saw it too and called them.  A very nice lady named Daphne assigned us to a red cabin named, "Iliahi" (iliahi), a stand alone cabin (not duplex) ideal for privacy and no noise heard from next door like in the duplex cabins. We checked in at an office-house in the town of Waimea where we met Daphne.  We had to pre-order 3 bags of firewood ($14.99 each) which she had waiting for us.  They only give you one small cube of firestarter per bag,  so pick up extra firestarter (less than $2 each for about 4 times the size 1 cube) at Big Save supermarket in Waimea not far from that office-house. To get to the cabin we drove up a very winding road called Kokee Road in heavy rain. Later we found a much faster road with less turns called Waimea Canyon road.  Upon arriving at the cabin we found the interior to be old, rustic and fully functional AND located in one of the most BEAUTIFUL plush forests on Kauai. The bathroom is clean with toilet paper, bath towels and shampoo/conditioner/bath-soap amenities.  However,  the shower floor looked the same as on the Yelp comment I saw,  which is why we bought along rubber slippers (flip-flops). There is a full kitchen with icebox, microwave, gas stove with oven, coffee maker with complimentary coffee, dishes (plates,  glasses and cups), both eating and cooking utensils, wine key, pots and pans, a dish towel, dishwashing soap, simple green spray, a new sponge, and a roll of papertowel. The cabin has 2 bedrooms, one with a full bed and the other with a bunk bed and a pull out sofa bed in the living room. The sheets were freshly washed as well as the blankets. There is also an old rattan dining room table with 2 chairs and 3 stools at the kitchen counter. The star of the cabin, for us, was the old fashioned furnace like fireplace. Over our stay we used all three bags of wood with just a few pieces left over. Be sure to save all the brown paper bags you accumulate to help feed the fire when building it.  The second best thing which I never thought I'd like was taking a shower.  The water was so nice and hot (good water heater) and the pressure was unbelievably strong. I wore my slippers and felt wonderful after taking a shower.  If I knew beforehand I'd be completely disconnected from the world,  absolutely no cell or internet service with only 1 payphone outside the lodge, I might have backed out.  I found this out when we got there. I didn't have any movies or music saved on my phone's hard drive.  With that,  we sat by the fire and talked all night and had the best quality family time ever.  I slept hard as a rock  and felt wonderful the next morning.  Would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY! Important Tip: When you get to the cabin there is another door in the kitchen which opens to a small empty outside closet where the water heater is stored. In there is another door that opens up to the outside.  Make sure you close the latch from the inside of that outer door because there is no lock or latch inside the kitchen door. We reported it to the management office. 2018 For 3 adults $99 per night on weeknights or $109 per night on weekend nights (this is a steal for its functionality and location) $14.99 firewood $49  cleaning fee Occupant who reserves must be 25 years or older and must occupy the cabin. In a very short distance (15 seconds away) if you want to dine out for breakfast, lunch, have a cocktail or fabulous cup of espresso, the Kokei Lodge is a very short drive up the hill and open daily from 9-4. read more

First, the positives. This is a great location to start a hike in Kokee Park or Waimea Canyon. The setting outside the cabins is beautiful, and you are within an easy walk of Kokee Lodge (with great food and drinks) and trailheads. The cabin also has working appliances so you do not have to go out to eat. Now, the negatives. The first thing that hits you when you walk in the door (at least in Cabin 9) is the smell of mold. No matter how much we aired the cabin out, it smelled the whole time. Everything in the cabin is old and fairly beat up. This is only for those who want a rustic experience. It is fairly dark inside, even with all the lights on. Finally, beware of the roosters! We were woken at 2am every day, and they kept up the noise the whole rest of the day. read more

This is a great option for people who want to do extensive hiking in Waimea Canyon or Kokee State Park. You can get to the trails early before other people. Shower had great water pressure, shampoo, soap, towels, toilet paper, and kitchen ware were provided. We made good use of the kitchen for breakfast. Be sure to turn your water heater up. The only negatives we came across were that the check in address on our confirmation info was incorrect. Actual office is in a red building across from the IT center in Waimea. We stayed in the Maile cabin. The glass on our wood burning stove was a little broken, so it was a little harder to control the heat. But overall a great experience, and very affordable. read more

Booked 4 nights in the Kokee Cabin, months in advance. Arrived at check in 4pm. Found 3 cockroaches on the counter. Ignored it. Proceeded to get settled in. Was laying down on top of the ancient bed that has my husbands back & my back in pain the past 2 days (mind you we only laid in it for a couple of hours). Around 11 pm my husband got up & turned on the light in the kitchen & he killed 8 roaches all over the counter. Then, again a few minutes later, same. WE packed up and moved into our vehicles. Requested a FULL refund as we couldn't enter the cabin until 4 pm and we were out of there at 11:30 pm - our food was the only thing left in the fridge/freezer. Called from the restaurant and said we were leaving. Requested FULL refund. They refund us less $158.65. We should get a FULL REFUND. Be careful on the bed. Unless you weigh about 10 lbs. you will be leaving there with back problems - even if you didn't have them. Very disappointed all the way around. read more
