My wife and I came in for a late dinner and were quickly seated in the dining room section of the pub. I ordered the King Charles l burger with French fries and my wife ordered the sirloin steak which was garnished with onion rings and French fries. We also ordered a plate on oysters on the half shell which were very fresh and tasty. Both dishes were very delicious and filing. The service was very friendly and attentive and the prices were reasonable. We stayed for the 9:45 live music (70's & 80's rock and roll) which was amazing and we stayed until closing. read more

This place claims to have been around for hundreds of years and with the stone decor in the inside I would have to agree with them. I came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, it was quite busy, especially in the front pub area of the restaurant. The portions at this place are fairly large, and the food is delicious! I had a brisket sandwich that was the best thing I ate my whole trip. I couldn't finish it on the delicious sourdough bread it came on, so I ended up picking off some of the meat so that it wouldn't go to waste. It also came with a full cup of fresh "chips". The other people at my table got different dishes such as the steak and fish & chips and everyone seemed to love their meals. Oh and of course I got a Guinness to top off my Irish meal. read more

This was a really warm and friendly pub. The menu was lovely and the eponymous beer, fantastic! I had a mushroom on sourdough that was very yummy and some vegetable cream soup which really hit the spot on a cold day. Fantastic coffee - fresh brewed to order. No wait to sit when we came on a Wednesday afternoon. However, it was packed ! Typical small tables, but great decoration! Straight out of a movie it seemed. Very intimate soft lighting, and friendly staff. However, you have to flag the waiters/waitress down for something. If you don't want to be waiting, I suggest you place your entire order and request the check right away. The food was great with nice decoration, style in the place cute, we got our food promptly and worth the journey if in the area. So if you don't mind needing to flag down your servers, then it's worth it! read more

Myself and mother went to Galway for Xmas markets and decided to go here for Dinner and drinks after. Last orders were 11.30 they get you to buy a drink and we're kicking us out by 11.40. When we refused to leave as we wanted to finish our drinks the girl at the bar start shouting aggressively at us. We asked for a refund if they were not going to let us finish our drinks and were refused.. I did not spend 16 euro on drinks to drink them in minus 2 degree weather in a plastic cup outside of the pub.. Another staff member came up behind us and called us a pair of c*nts 3 times. I asked for a manager and they refused to let us speak to him. Horrific customer service after spending near 200 euro there we were treated horrifically and humiliated. AVOID this place! read more

The food was tasty, but the service was bad enough to warrant a one star rating. To begin, sections of the restaurant were closed. There were no signs to indicate this, and we were sitting in that area for a good 15-20 minutes before someone told us, despite several staff members walking by. The main bathrooms were decent, but the one with a changing table was the most disgusting bathroom I've ever been in. Once we were finally seated (on torn up chairs, see pic), it took 15 mins to get a cocktail menu. We didn't get our drinks until the food had arrived, and had to ask for water 3x (which arrived even after we got our drinks). Once the food came, we didn't see any wait staff again until we had to harass them 3x for our check (seeing a pattern with the 3's here?) We had very limited time in Galway and were very disappointed to have wasted time here. read more

We had a group of 7 and we had waited over an hour to be seated (they warned us so no issues here) but once we did, the service was all over the place. They took our drink and food orders very quickly (was very clear they were understaffed and rushed) - didn't even say hello just asked what we wanted right away. It was near impossible to get water - we had to ask twice and even after they remembered they just brought glasses over without water. the apps and mains came all at random times, we tried to wait for our group to be served but it was pointless. 30 minutes after everyone else had been served I still didn't have my main - I had to flag down a waitress that wasn't ours and ask her to relay the message. It took a long time for anyone to come over - they never apologized they just said it was coming soon. I got so hungry I started eating the leftovers of someone else's plate, and I told the waitress to forget about it bc everyone was tired. She insisted that I wait because it was coming out right away, so I figured fine I'll wait and just take it to go. We waited another 10 minutes for it to come out and when it did I asked to take it to go and she said "oh we don't have boxes" and walked away.The entire experience was so off putting and our entire group was confused. They clearly understaff here - everyone was running around, dishes overflowing, breaking, etc. and I come from hospitality so I could tell this is not the fault of the staff but whoever is managing schedules. Don't cut corners - it's not fair to your staff and your guests will notice. read more

Gave this place 2 chances on 2 different days at 2 different times and each time I had to physically move tables just so someone would walk by us and, if we were lucky, make eye contact. That didn't mean they would serve you or acknowledge you. No if you wanted that special treat you had to ask them to come over to your table or stand at the bar for 7 minutes trying to get a bartender to talk to you even though there was only 3 other patrons at the bar. Can't imagine what this place is like when it's actually busy. Not worth the time or trouble. read more

Completely out of breath after eating lunch here. Nice pub food and local options if you are into trying what's good in the area. I had the fish and chips. The batter was super tasty and we'll cooked. The chips, they're just to thick for me so in the middle the texture is more mushy. But the meat and fish were what we wanted. read more

All you cheesy, inauthentic "Irish" pubs of America... take note! I celebrated St. Patty's Day in Galway in 2007 and ended up at the King's Head that night, simply by chance. And then the next night. And the next. And when we finally left for Dublin, my heart ached. I still haven't found a place comparable.... The architecture is beautiful, as is the building materials themselves - in fact, it still has several original features dating back to the 13 thru 1600's. You don't see that sort of thing in America (duh). Not only is it cool-looking, but the drinks are hearty and satisfying. And we can't forget the music! Each night I was there, a wonderful band played a healthy mix of classic rock, 80's pop, & an Irish tune sprinkled here & there. The patrons were never too shy to sing along. Amazing! I am growing too wistful as I type...... Sigh. King's Head, you have my heart. read more

This place is extremely overpriced for what you get, and the quality of the food is appalling to boot. One person from my party ordered a rare (RARE) sirloin and it came medium to medium-well, tasting as if it was dunked in a vat of salt before it was probably packed aboard a schooner by the Dutch East India company. I ordered the Lobster and chips for €34 or so, do not bother. The pitiful lobsters used for this overpriced gouge of a meal must have been subjected to a shrink ray before serving them. Hardly any real meat, even the chips were overcooked. The sauce was depressing and sub-par. Lastly they ran a "special" on a Montelpulciano which tasted like a rebottled Sangiovese hybrid that sat in the heat for a few weeks. The cooking staff here shouldn't be allowed near a microwave. The only good thing I can say is the staff is friendly. Overall, avoid this place it's simply not worth it. read more

Looking at the front you could never tell how big and cavernous this place really is! They have a stage and 3 floors. Seems to cater to the local, college crowd. The "college crowd" in Europe is wayyyyy different than the ones in the States. Ill take it anyday. Being in Galway I wanted oysters. They have a 6 count and pint of Guinnes. Along with brown bread and a side salad. Oysters were kind of fishy. Its more of a novelty. Dont expect to get filled up on em. It's a pretty cool place, I don't have any major complaints. Once came in here to potentially see a match but didn't find seats, so we left. That said there was a good atmosphere in here and plenty of screens-- just come earlier. Another time sat for a quiet pint on the keg seats near one of the bars and had a perfectly nice time. There seems to be some nice cocktails on their list though I haven't tried one, and the staff keep the place reasonably clean. read more

Ye, it's a tourist hole, and were it in my own fair city I'd probably hate it. But it's not. I'm a tourist and a student in Galway, so I'm allowed like the Kings Head. I wouldn't eat food here, it's a pub, that it's below par should be a given. I would, and have on numerous occasions, sunk a few pints here. And it's always been a very good venue to me. Even on Arthurs Day, one of the worst days in the drinking calendar, the Kings Head was actually pretty good fun. The bouncers just did their job-keeping the crowd at a reasonable 'still fun' size, and ensuring most of them could still stand. I was very impressed, especially considering the Zombie Apocalypse that was happening outside. Don't get Guinness though. You have to pour your drink into a plastic cup before going out for a smoke. It's criminal. And besides, service is already slow enough without a two-part pour. read more

The King's Head was recommended by our tour guide as a great place for a steak and sit-down meal. The inside is more spacious than I expected, with separate areas for dining and plenty of spots at the bar. The menu looks like it changes daily, with a few local specials and then some staple items. My husband ordered the ribeye and I got the fish & chips, which was haddock rather than cod. The food was excellent! The fish was battered and fried perfectly- not too greasy, and I loved the house made tartar sauce served in an oyster shell. The mushy peas were fantastic! Portions are very generous so you won't leave hungry. My only complaint is the service- we went at a slow time and only saw our waitress once. read more

I only went into this pub to see the Denmark vs Netherlands football match and luckily they had the game on and Denmark won, so I could save face at work when I would come into work the following Monday. I never got to order anything mostly because I am a cheap ass and the prices were way to pricey for getting bad beer which is all I can drink at a football match except for water. I had a sirloin steak, as there was a t-bone that was a special for the evening but was sold out. I must say I have NEVER in my life had steak prepared so terribly. I'm sorry if not all the cooks are bad like whoever prepared my steak the night I was there, but it was by far the saltiest piece of poorly cooked meat I have _EVER_ had in my life. My friends had a lobster plate which was also quite mediocre. The chips were served scorching hot and could not readily be eaten for at least 10 minutes unless you wanted to burn the inside of your mouth. Unless this was a fluke evening I'd highly recommend against going here for food unless you're not interested in quality. At which point you'd get a better value for your money by going to Burger King or McDonald's. read more

I thought this place was super fun. The restaurant is good sized (but a little dark). The menu is varied and the food was decent! Was it the 100% best food that I've ever eaten? No of course not, but I don't think it's trying to be a fancy pants restaurant. The fried oysters were phenomenal. The braised steak was extremely tender and delicious. The hamburger was....eh (I'm from America so hamburgers are our specialty so I'm a touch judgmental). Wine, cocktails and beer were delicious. We were wooed in with the traditional irish trap and dancers. We went upstairs and had a great view. We truly enjoyed it. It definitely is a touristy place, but still a lot of fun! read more

I ordered a pint here and the waitress said she would return with my change. well she vanished with my change never to be seen again. there is a lot of that kind of thing that goes on in Galway charge one price to the tourist and another to my wife who is a local. otherwise it an institution of Galway and a cool pub. read more

I had a lot of fun at the King's Head one Friday evening in Galway. I'm not sure who the band was, but they did cover mostly popular rock songs, so it's not that terribly important who they were...it was still a lot of fun to dance and sing. Yes! The crowd sings along in Ireland WITH THE BAND. The band even encourages it with body language and prompts! How weird is that? Anyhow, I had too much Jameson here, it was crowded with just a slightly meet-market feel (fun to watch the young adults flirt with one another, and painful to watch a guy get totally shut down by this one hot woman!) and overall, it was a heck of a lot of fun. The ceilings are really low, so it feels quite dark and intimate, but the stage had good lighting so that you didn't feel like you were in a cave. The crazy thing is that it's built of local stone and so everything feels SO OLD. Lots of strange little kitty corners, filled with seats or another stretch of bar. Highly recommended! read more

I wanted to love the Kings Head; it's where we met up with family the first night of our recent trip to Ireland. The pints were flowing and it was a fun atmosphere with good service. But that hamburger I ordered was just not great. The bun fell apart (bottom bun broke in half) almost instantly; the bacon was a strange, thick swirl of ham (not crispy, but I guess that's partially how it's served in Ireland); and while I wanted to love the "shallot and bacon relish," I definitely did not. I needed to get the taste out of my mouth. But, it was a fun time. read more

We loved The Kings Head so much we visited everyday while in Galway. There is a great variety of drink and the coal fires warmed us up quickly. We all agree they had the best fish and chips we had in Galway. The mussels were very good. Fantastic atmosphere. read more

What first drew me into the King's Head was the bathrooms. I was on a walking tour of the city and needed some place to go, so we stopped in here. The bathrooms were quite clean and had little rooms instead of stalls. I'm not sure if that's common place in Europe, but I thought it was really neat. Neat enough that I came back later that evening for a drink. The drinks there were over priced. I think I had a cocktail that was about 11 € Jagger Bombs were about 13€ But something that I did appreciate with this bar was that it had live music. They seemed to just be people from around town putting on a show for their friends. It was a very casual atmosphere. read more
