A Fine Pub to visit while in Galway. Geared more for the Galway nightlife with live entertainment every night. Our visit was noontime and our interest was seeing the famed Kings Head up close. Not real, but interesting just the same. The place was quiet. Multiple levels where you can gather. We sat in the pub area and ordered a light lunch and of course, a pint. Fresh crab salad, seafood chowder with traditional brown bread, and "The Harry & Emmy," a local Andarl Farm ham and Emmental cheese on a sour dough served on a cutting board. No Complaints and No Leftovers. All for about 23 Euro. Following a delightful lunch, we went to the second level in search of the King's Head. Unfortunately, He was not to be seen. I would give this location 10 stars if I could. We were on a tour to Cliffs of Mohr With a stop in Galway. Our guide recommended this location. We trusted him and that hopefully it wasn't too touristy. We were pleasantly surprised that yes while there are tourists all over Galway we did not feel that this was a very touristy spot for lunch. We were able to get seated right away after we showed her vaccination cards at the door. We ordered the mussels, fish and chips, and half dozen oysters. First, it was a bucket of mussels. That is no exaggeration. Although small they were so plentiful in the garlic cream broth that they were cooked in. They were outstanding and we could not finish them all. The oysters were fresh creamy with a briny taste. Those were also delicious. The fish and chips or an ample portion served crispy and not greasy. This is probably one of our favorite meals in Ireland and we wish we had another day to come back for a second meal. I highly recommend if you are on one of the tours that stops here or just visiting go away for a day or two that you enjoy a meal here. The service was very friendly and efficient. The prices are very reasonable especially for a tourist centric town. We would definitely come back and have another meal here if we visit again. read more

TLDR: visit the pub for a beer, but don't eat at the Bistro. This is a review for the Bistro. I wouldn't be surprised if this place pays all the local hotels and tours to recommend it and then passes the cost of the payments on to the tourists through their menu prices - but that's just speculation. Only tourists eat here. The food isn't very good and the prices are much higher than other places. I'm disappointed we spent our last meal here other than somewhere else so I can't recommend the bistro. The drinks were overpriced and verrryy sour too- made my tongue hurt with each sip. That being said- the pub itself is very cool and I do recommend visiting it for a drink. Maybe steer clear of the cocktails. read more

Kevin our tour guide recommended The Kings Head which was a historic pub in a great location. I had the fish of the day which was Hake. It was very tasty and fresh with baby potatoes that were also very good. Holly had the mushroom risotto which was also good but not great. The selection of beers was good but not great. The Hamburger was also good but not great. Our service was great ! Kate and another lovely lass from San Francisco helped us through our selections and were very attentive. There were so many restaurant choices for our first evening in Galway. We viewed the menus of several and decided to try this place. We sat in the restaurant side so we didn't hear the live music. We started with their house draft beer which was Blood Red Ale. I ordered the King Charles I Burger which was an Irish Beef Burger with Dublin cheese and a type of thick pork on top that I believe they call bacon but not at all like American bacon. American bacon is called stringy bacon here. It and the chips were very good. The service was ok just don't be in a hurry. We've adapted to the Irish way of not rushing through our meal. read more

My first fish and chips experience! So I don't really eat fish. I'm trying to get better and force myself to eat 'em when I see 'em, but it's a work in progress at the moment. The pub itself is right in central Galway and has a typical facade and menu. It's likely a tourist trap but whatever. The food is good. The service is good. The beer is good. What more could you ask for? I didn't actually order a beer to be honest. I had some sort of ginger stomach settler after a rough time/seasickness on the Atlantic. It was really tasty and I'm glad our server suggested it. The drink also went well with the fish and chips. I also enjoyed them, believe it or not! The tartar sauce definitely helped with the fishiness. I'd return on future trips to Galway! read more

The Kings Head was an amazing time with live music and Irish river dance. It's still hard for me to fathom how old the history is and that this place was built centuries ago! The beer selection on top was awesome, the fact that they had Havana Club rum was mind blowing since I haven't seen it since I was in Cuba, and the service was stellar. Everywhere you go in Ireland, you're going to make friends and here it was just the same. A lovely, lively, and friendly crowd of people who enjoy getting to know you, swapping stories over a pint and listening to fantastic music; this is what Ireland is all about! I really enjoyed the Galway Hooker beer after a few of the rum and sodas I had. When you imagine a pub in Ireland, this is what you picture in your head without a doubt. Big cool looking bar. Terrible customer service. We had two of their specialty drinks at 12€ each. Went back to the bar and ordered two espresso martinis with Baileys and the bartenders flatly said, "No. I don't do that". I thought he was joking and kind of stared back at him. He repeated "we don't adjust drinks, I make it the way I make or I'd have to do that for everyone." Ummm.... So I'm paying 12€ to drink my drink the way YOU want make it not how I want to drink it. Mmmmm ..... okay. Stellar service.... Mind you, this wasn't a difficult request and it was at 1pm on a weekday with an near empty bar. One of the most bizarre and rude encounters Ive had in Ireland. Not sure what happened in the other reviews saying poor service. My mother and I were visiting Galway and happened on the Christmas Fair; very cool but that is another tale. We looked all over and found the Kings Head. It had a marvelous traditional Irish pub decor with a warm fire. After being seated very quickly, we received our drinks and starter. We both ordered the Guinness stew and it was fabulous! Very tasty and the perfect meal for a cold Irish night. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. We experienced no shenanigans in regards to pricing or when I paid tab with cash. Change came quickly and she was very appreciative of our business. read more

This is hard to write because the staff was absolutely lovely. But this was the worst food I've had in my weeks in Ireland. I got the seafood platter, to have a bit of everything and each item was worst than the last. Oysters, shucked terribly, shell all over them. Mackerel and trout, dry and full of bones. Loved loved this Galway historic Pub gem. There was a beautiful burning fireplace inside at entrance, the restaurant was immaculately clean modern and updated. The buzz from the fantastic service and the customers was a pleasure. Oh and the food was better than expected. I got a very very good rib eye steak that was juicy and seasoned nicely. Truly an awesome experience. Great food and super friendly staff. Try a Blood Red Ale and soak in the atmosphere. This place has been around since 1649! I recommend the brisket sandwich with chips with a pint of the Blood Red Ale. read more

Efficient service and good food to feed the hoards of tourists that descend on this picturesque town on the Wild Atlantic Coast of Ireland. The chowder was loaded with dill and sea food chunks making it well worth the euro 7.95. We found the back alley entrance, but had we seen the main bar entrance (packed at 9:00 pm on a Saturday) we might have turned away. Horrible experience! This is the first time I have had to give a negative review for a restaurant. The food was good when it finally arrived but the service was horrible. When we were seated there were lots of empty tables. The waitress took forever getting to us. As the food came out for other tables we noticed 4 tables that were seated after us had received their food before us. We were on a tight schedule because of a tour bus schedule and were forced to eat rapidly when our order finally arrived. We expressed multiple times to our server our concern over the wait time with no resolution. We spoke to the manager also with only shallow excuses about some dishes taking longer to prepare. Our order was basic, nothing that should have taken "longer". Management should have been more concerned and not make excuses. I recommend avoiding this establishment, there are many other good options in the area. read more

Being in Galway for two days, this was my go to spot for the two days. Great live music and a decent selection of beers which were in the 3-5 euro range. If you really want to get smashed you have the option of getting a pitcher of mixed drinks for 15 euros. Totally college bar worthy when you think about the pitcher of mixed drinks. I noticed Kings Head is probably one of 4 pubs that has a younger or mixed crowd. It's pretty roomy and has a very chill vibe. You can hang out in the front or if you want there's live music in the back of the pub. Live music starts around 9:00pm and goes until 12:00am everyday. The bands usually do covers of American songs, so if you're looking for a spot that does traditional Irisih music this isn't the spot for you. Of the two nights that I came here both the duos were fantastic singers, request are welcomed which was pretty sweet. Shows how talented they are. read more

Food and service was good. Food was slightly elevated pub food. I didn't think it was a great value. Came with 3 adults and 2 kids. Grilled lobster was delicious. The star of the meal was the chowder! My wife had the monk fish and that was good. My cousin had the ribeye, it was a bit thin and grizzly.
