Petersen Family Farm is a wonderful farm stand tucked away off 4000 W in Riverton. What makes it wonderful? Well, I'll tell you. Driving in to the driveway you are welcomed by a long row of giant sunflowers. They line the crops, protecting them from cars driving in, and create a beautiful throwback to simpler times. When you walk into the "shed" to buy your produce, you are struck by the simple country charm. Petersen's has more to offer than your average bear...er farm stand. Being a farm stand, of course they sell produce. Some is grown by them (fantastic corn), some is brought in from other local growers. They also have local peaches, apples, cantaloupe, etc. All is top quality and packed with flavor. They have CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) shares (sold out for 2011). They offer grass fed beef, free range chicken, and beefalo for sale. You can even rent your own tilled, fertilized, and irrigated garden plot so you can grow and tend what you like in their beautiful farmland. Oh, and they've started a pre-school. And they sell pumpkins too! They offer so much that really the best way to learn about them is via their website: http://www.petersenfamilyfarm.com/ The people who work there are uber-friendly and helpful. They only reason they didn't get five stars is because their prices aren't always the most economical way to get produce. Big box stores have tremendous buying power and do undercut their prices here and there in their weekly sales. That being said, the quality is FAR superior to almost any grocery store (I only say almost because Harmons gets some local produce in too during the summer) and generally about as good as anything you'd grow yourself (or in my case, better). If you live in the SW corner of the valley and can't or don't want to make the schlep to the downtown Farmer's market for quality produce, Peterson's is a solid alternative. And it's always great to support a local business. Petersen's started with a dream by a young father in the '30s who wanted to raise children and crops. Now the dream is kept alive by his grandson, Luke, who is also raising children and crops. His goal is to preserve agriculture in the midst of suburbia. It's a dream well worth dreaming. And it's a dream worth supporting. So stop by and show 'em some love. You'll be glad you did. read more

Goats; cool. A few activities for little kids; nice. Food trucks; meh. Selection of pumpkins; good. The issue must have been going on a Saturday. It was chaotic with the amount of people there. Lesson learned. Waiting 15 minutes to get my pumpkins weighed just to be handed a piece of paper to go wait 35 minutes in their little shop to pay. First, seems unnecessary to split it up. Second, I wish the total was mentioned prior to waiting to pay. A total of 50 minutes of waiting due to lack of registers and slow employees just to be told that my 6 pumpkins totaled $47! At that point what were my options? Start over, ditch a couple, re-weigh, and stand in line to pay again, wasting another hour? Or pay? With 2 little kids I decided to pay and put that place in my rear view mirror. Check out my pic. Cute, right? Not $47 and an hour in line cute. I get it- supply and demand. But next year I'll opt for the much cheaper, almost as nice pumpkins from Smiths. At the end of the day they're both ending up in the garbage. Oh ya, cute market, but $14 for a 12oz. jar of pickles and $8 for a gallon of apple juice? I'll pass. Update 6 days later: middle pumpkin has already started to rot. The corn on the cob is amazing... I can't ever buy corn at Smith's or Harmon's because now they taste gross. I also like the popcorn there I always eat a bag while shopping. The homemade peanut butter is like crack. It's so good. read more

We've been coming to Petersen farm for years and it's one of our favorite fall traditions. However, this year I was so disappointed to see the added admission prices. We over heard the cutest little family having to tell their kids they couldn't go in because it would be $40 just to enter and that didn't even include tickets for the attractions and the price of pumpkins. I understand that they need to make a profit but the prices make it unattainable for so many families. read more

I see this place everyday on my way home from school and I always say I am gonna stop by, well today was the day. It was great weather and I was in the market for a pumpkin with my girlfriend. I came to find out that Peterson Family Farms has hella stuff you can do. There was a petting zoo, apple sling shot (costs a dollar!) with targets and a full market inside selling locally sourced products. The only thing that sucks is that it is closing next week and I was looking forward to making it my go to produce market. I will definitely go back when they open back up and I recommend you do the same. read more

I am not really clear on what this business is trying to be to be honest. I don't particularly like the "voice" of their website and their workshops are overpriced. We live very close by in Daybreak and came out for the pumpkin patch today. To be perfectly honest, this place is just ok. There are adorable goats to feed, looks like a tractor ride(we didn't ride), some slides/rustic hideouts, and a variety of pumpkins. But the whole thing is sort of set up like fair in the middle of dirt field with hay over the top rather than being a pumpkin patch. It's just odd. The farm stand is cute inside and they have a variety of things including produce but echoing what other reviewers have said they have their baked goods and caramel apples out where anyone can touch them and grab them. It's extremely disgusting and unhygienic when you see people who you just saw outside picking up dirty pumpkins, petting and feeding goats then coming in and touching all the baked goods/caramel apples. I may give this place another chance but not for food I can't wash or isn't sealed. read more

Although, I do love this farm and think it has some great family experiences to offer, I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend buying their Fall Fun Package Groupon!!! It is a waste of money. The Groupon lists a variety of activities that are "included" in the package you purchase. However, what they don't tell you is ALL of these activities are FREE for everyone else who comes to the family farm. We ended up waiting in line almost 1 hour for a wagon ride. I wouldn't have minded the wait except for the fact that we were waiting behind people enjoying the ride for FREE while we had paid $33 for a Groupon to enjoy the ride. I would recommend going to the farm for their fall activities with your family. I just wouldn't buy the Groupon experience because you will save money. read more

Went to visit the farm. Was so sad about what I saw. The goats were licking the inch of frozen water in there humongous bowl they have put out for them, and no food. The bunnies are licking out of the bottle which also is completely empty of water and food. I asked if I can fill a bucket of water for the animals, and the two young ladies in the market said it's a liability and mentioned how sad it is and they will just tell the owner. Seems they know and no one does anything. Very Sad. read more

I really like this handy dandy close by grocery store. Easy to memorize layout. They have a little bit of everything. Great, quality produce dept. I love the meat department. If I don't see what I want or need right off they help me find it or cut it for me. I love the fresh ground beef. Just enough fat for flavor not enough to drain. Super cute place and fun but Prices are ridiculous! This is not California! Carving Pumpkins were 69 cents a pound. We had ours weighed and priced and they wanted to charge $75 for 2 large pumpkins 1 small and 2 tiny ones. No thanks we left. And 1 square inch of honey comb $8.00. read more

Don't buy anything here. They are overpriced and poor customer service. I shopped here trying to support local business expecting that I would get an improved experience, no such luck. They sold me a xmas tree stand and it was crap. I spent hours trying to get it to work and they cut the tree in a way that it had no chance of standing up straight. When I asked for a refund they wanted to give an in store credit so I could come back and buy some more over priced crap. I'm never going back. read more

I love shopping local, I love Petersen Family Farms for the events they do, there is no where better to get pumpkins in fall. I have tried to support them and shop local and have gone to their farm store a few times now and I am done doing so. The prices aren't good (I am willing to pay more for local, farm grown foods) but most of their produce is more than the grocery stores and NOT from their farm, it'd be just like going to Harmons or Smiths. The employees aren't rude, but they don't seem to give a darn about their work. Last time I went (Thursday) I stood in the checkout like for 10 minutes before and employee even came out of the back room. Myself and others patiently waited in line while the shop was empty..I mean C'mon. All in all, I will get my pumpkins here but their farm market is a sham and not worth it. read more

I took my kids up to pick out a tree. I had been wanting to check out their market anyway and thought erringly (my own fault) that it was a cut your own tree place. The photos were a little misleading but I accept that it was my own error. The trees mostly were pretty pitiful looking. A lot of "Charlie Brown Christmas" types but just taller. And for that, they were charging a ridiculous amount of money. There was really only two or three trees on the lot that I would have been interested around the 5-7ft height and they were all over $130. I wish I had taken pictures of how pitiful their trees really were. I checked out the market and it was so incredibly tiny. I was expecting something more. Their prices were outrageous compared to any other local markets I've been to and there really wasn't anything special about what they offered. I was disappointed. I gave them three stars entirely because my kids had fun watching the little goats and loved that cats and chickens were wandering around. read more

After 2 years of bad customer service, entitled responses, and over-priced products and "experiences", my advice is to steer clear. They are very vague what is included with their experiences, clearly omitting information (basically lying), and not being honest when changes are made to the experience. They have a no refund policy, so they can be as vague as they want to be and not take care of you when they don't live up to the expectation of how much they charge. It's sad that they are the only farm around that does Santa experiences. I would gladly go somewhere else, but instead we'll do without. I'm tempted to post screenshots of our conversation to show you how rude they are when I was just asking for more details, but I won't... for now. You're better off going in the evening and taking pictures for free around the farm where it's decorated with trees and twinkle lights. Don't pay for anything! You will be disappointed. read more

I really love visiting the Peterson Farm. I grew up farming and coming to get my produce here reminds me of that growing up. The farm is lovely and the workers know their stuff. The farming family will take time to talk to you and answer questions about all of the various activities and produce the farm offers. Prices are a little higher than most grocery stores, but you are really paying for quality which they have in spades, and if you are canning and getting produce in bulk then the prices drop significantly and just can't be beat. I'm on my way this weekend for the chili roast and to get my peaches! read more

Took my niece and nephew to buy their first pumpkins, and boy - we were not disappointed - there were pumpkins as far as the eye can see. Big pumpkins, regular pumpkins, and even small baby pumpkins for $.50 each. This was definitely a pretty estate with lots more things to look at than the pumpkin patch. I'll definitely come by again when I don't have the kids with me. read more

Peterson farm is a great spot to get local veggies and feel like you care about the land. The Peterson's have gone a long way towards not only growing the best produce but making an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are at the farm and not some shaggy roadside tent. There is a lot of charm to the people and the place. There is a lot going on there from Food Trucks, activities and the farm preschool. Way to go guys, this is the kind of local business we need to support. People who complain about the prices can get right down to Wal-Mart for the finest Florida or California produce they can buy and all the charm that you get from a plastic and stainless steel display on the isle.
