    King bed room #265

As you may know, I travel for a living. Traveling for a living means I stay in a lot of hotels. A lot of hotels. Many, many hotels. I've become somewhat of a 'hotel snob' over the years, and since I spend multiple days in each location it's got to be good, right? This is my first, hopefully not my last, visit to Alaska. We took the ferry from Bellingham, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska (which is another review all by itself) and landed in Ketchikan. As far as I can tell, there are really only three hotels in Ketchikan, and during our visit here I will be staying in two of them. The first is the Landing Hotel. Formerly a Best Western, they underwent a change in management and have struck out on their own. A good move, I think. The hotel is clean and cozy and is across the road from the ferry docks: very convenient. I had a large room with a king bed and the usual accessories: TV, mini-fridge, microwave and Keurig coffeemaker (I have a refillable K-cup so I can use my preferred coffee in it). A nice bonus: two white, fluffy bathrobes and premium soaps and shampoo. The room was quiet and the functional window has a screen so I could crack it open for fresh air. No typical HVAC unit here: a baseboard heater keeps the chill away (but I didn't need it). The parking lot is small but there's a garage for normal vehicles (ours is too tall but we found a space in the open). The staff are...amazing. Friendly but not cloying, they are focused on making customers happy, and they excel at it. Properly masked and with sanitizer in easy reach, they made my all-too-brief stay a real pleasure. So when, not if, you come to visit Ketchikan, stay here at the Landing Hotel. You will not be sorry!

Stayed at The Landing for one night on a brief trip to Ketchikan in December. It is located a short walk from the ferry terminal that takes you to the airport. What impressed me the most was how comfortable and clean the hotel was, and the furniture, TV, and other furnishings looked fairly new. We chose to walk into downtown Ketchikan (which is slightly less than two miles) and also took the local bus as well. The staff at The Landing were very friendly and helpful, and they have a neat little diner type restaurant where we had a delicious breakfast. On our next trip to Ketchikan we will most definitely stay here.

My husband and I are avid oyster lovers and when I saw this as an excursion choice I knew we had to go! Pick-up from the dock was easy and since we were the first tour, it was just us and one other person! Everyone from our driver, the capt, and staff at Hump Island were so welcoming, friendly, and informative about the area. With our group being so small, it felt more intimate and enjoyable. Our boat ride was great to and from Hump Island because our captain made sure to show us around and we were able to catch glimpses of bald eagles and whales! Once we arrived to Hump Island Oyster Co we were greeted and given such detail about the process at the farm. Our kids got to enjoy their touch tank and even spotted some jellyfish! Once upstairs, we enjoyed raw and charbroiled oysters along with some amazing salsas and sauces. The whole experience reminded my husband and I of that of wine tasting, but with oysters. Conversation flowed and the laid back atmosphere was comfortable and enjoyable. It was magical being in this part of Alaska and enjoying fresh oysters shucked right in front of us and grown right there. Thank you, Hump Island Oyster Co! We look forward to making our way back in the future and can't recommend this tour enough to others on cruises or visiting Ketchikan!

As for the show, for Alaska it is bargain priced, entertaining, with good family friendly humor. Saw numerous eagles above us during the show, and it was another dry day, though a bit chilly so I was happy to be wearing my insulated coat and gloves in the covered seats. I did think of the performers who after taking a dunk in cold water where interacting with the guests and taking pictures with them at the end of the show. Overall a great experience.

However the organization getting to this show is -7. The events are great and I don't want to spoil anything, the organization I want to discuss. I have never see anything so bad ever! There is 3 lines going at once axe throwing, the show, and crab eating. The women making these lines absolutely have no idea what they are doing and can't keep track of what line goes where. I don't know if they know what they're doing or just don't care, but this HAS to change!

During our boat ride, we got to see bald-head eagle, see sea lion and a crazy amount of seals sun bathing. After the fun tour on the water, we arrived at Silver King Lodge. It is a small building with lots of wood curving, which was interesting. Right in front of the lodge, we saw some Sitka black tail fawns! Then off to a rainforest hike. Our guide told us that it was going to be "the easiest hike" you will ever do. We headed off to the Memorial Trail. Once we started the hike, we saw what he meant by that. The walking trail was a wide wooden trail, I assume it is probably is accessible by wheelchair too. And hence, the easiest hike. I don't even know if it can be called a "hike" at this point...LOL. The rainforest was pretty cool, it was mostly covered with different kinds of moss. We learned about moss and other plants and trees during our short walk. After taking in all the wonderful nature, it was time to walk back to the Silver King Lodge. The "hike" was about 20 minutes walk. And, we were walking slow, so the trail is kind of short. The picnic tables were all set up for us for the feast. Once we were all seated, the pot was brought over to each table and he dumped the pot of seafood gold onto our table. The seafood feast included crab, shrimp, clams, mussels, potatoes, onions, garlic, corn, and sausage. Oh my goodness they were awesome!!! So much crab legs and everything else... We all got down and dirty for this delectable feast. The ride back to the dock was much faster, since we didn't stop to look for any wildlife on the way back. Our tour guide kept us entertained on the ride back though. Our first excursion was a big success! We had a great time on this tour and feast. I had a high expectation for the feast, and it certainly delivered!
