Nice spot! The selection of older books is lacking, but it's made up for with tons of new books thoughtfully arranged along one whole wall of the shop. The graphic novel selection is fantastic, The only ding on this shop is a quibble, and not something to complain about, but just something to be aware of. If you buy wall books, the top loader is not included in the purchase. On top of the sale price, the top loader costs extra. Not much, but a bit. Fyi. Staff was friendly, though I didn't ask many questions. I'm sure they know their stuff. I'll happily visit again when I'm in the area. read more

This is by far my favorite comic shop. I stop by every time I am in the area hour, even though there are other shops closer. I've been coming here for years, and will continue to do so. Besides having an awesome name, this store is really great at what it does. For that, I give it 4 stars. Just hearing the name is sort of ambiguous - it doesn't really explain what you could find inside. I had driven past it many times before and thought it was a bar or something like that. It could have been anything. It's also located on High St. in Clintonville in this strip mall next to a hair salon. It's pretty easy to miss, but just look for the sign with the name and the picture of the ogre. So what is the Laughing Ogre? Only the nicest comic book store I've ever been in. OK, so I don't go to a lot of comic book stores, but I was still very impressed with what this store had to offer. My sister and I went here just yesterday before the snow storm got too bad. Unfortunately, our visit was cut a little short because of the snow, or else we might have been here for hours. See, my sister loves comic books and isn't from Columbus. But she is visiting this week, and wanted me to take her to a comic book store because she doesn't have any around where she lives. She's really into comic books and always has been. I like to read them every now and again but I don't really have the need for them myself, but I certainly didn't mind going to a store and looking around. I had heard about this place, so I decided that we could go check it out. We made the trek up to Clintonville and pulled right into the parking lot - lots of spaces right in front! We went in and were wowed with what we saw. The store was clean, a good size and everything was very well organized. It was very neat and there was so much stuff! There were two glass cases that were full of figurines of superheroes and even some stuffed animals right by the door. To the left inside of the front door, my sister found a table that had a bunch of posters and a few comics sitting there. It was a free table so you could take whatever you wanted! She helped herself to a few things and then proceeded to hunt for what she was looking for. Meanwhile, I wandered around and took pictures and looked at the graphic novels. I do like reading graphic novels now and again - right now I'm reading the Y: The Last Man series, which is great. They had this here, but they were like $12 a piece. So I didn't buy anything. But they had such a huge selection of graphic novels! There was one for every comic book character I've ever heard of (which I'll admit isn't really that many), but so much more. It was insane. I'd say that if you like graphic novels, this is the place to go. I kinda just wanted to hang out there and read them, and I probably could have gotten away with that here, but there wasn't anywhere to sit down. So I was just flipping through books and looking at pictures. My sister was checking out the posters, and looking at the selection of new comic books. She was excited because we found a series of Storm comic books - her favorite character - and so she got one of those. But she was also very impressed with the selection of Spawn graphic novels and comic books. She likes to read those a lot. She was also pretty excited when I pointed out to her a figurine of Kasumi from the Dead or Alive video games (her favorite game). It was like they had everything here. ...Almost. She was looking for an older comic book of Wolverine to complete her collection. She was missing the last one in a series and so we were checking out the older comic books. They had a great selection of new everything, but their older comics weren't near as plentiful. They didn't have what she was looking for. And all of their old comics were in bins in alphabetical order. They were organized well, but it still took a while to shuffle through them to see if they did indeed have what she was looking for. The guys here were pretty nice. They asked us if we needed any help finding anything but we told them we were just looking around and went about out way. I think we spend a good hour in there. Anyway, it seemed like maybe they weren't used to getting girls in the store. A couple of guys stopped in that were either daily regulars or other employees and hung out and all talked about comic stuff. Pretty cool. When one of them came in, he said, "Hey ladies," to the guys, just joking around, then the guys nodded in our direction and said, "Maybe you want to say that to the real ladies that are in here!" It was funny, but you could tell that our kind probably isn't as common around those parts! But nevertheless they were nice to us and didn't look at us weird or anything like that. So unfortunately, not really at the forefront as far as the older stuff goes. But we still had some fun here and it took me some convincing to drag her out of the store. I was worried about the roads getting bad (which they were by the minute!) but I'm sure she wouldn't have minded being snowed in here! I've been to this place many times throughout the years. Most comic book stores limit themselves to the big two, but not the Laughing Ogre. Here you will find things by Dan Clowes, the Hernandez brothers, and many more comic book creators outside of major publishing houses. They also host big events like Free Comic book day, actors, and cartoonists. It's a great place to spend at least half an hour looking through everything. read more

A breeding ground for leftist activism. Over the years I have spent a considerable amount of money at this store, at the very least $5000. When I go to a comic book store, I go for the fun and escapism. Not to hear the staff make disparaging, snide remarks about politics or Christianity. It's very unprofessional and inconsiderate to the customers. This is what happened when I went in last weekend where I was about to spend at least $100 for a graphic novel and a few back issues of Frank Miller's Daredevil. That was the case until I heard the skinny, curly-haired brunette badmouth Christianity. Hey geniuses, Democrats aren't the only ones who buy comics! Great business tactic! This is why the industry is in decline. So, until she is replaced I won't spend another dime here. read more

One of the biggest obstacles for any purveyor of goods that lie within the realm of nerdom is that they oftentimes stumble in the areas of being approachable for the uninitiated. You know how it is - whether it's a parent looking for the perfect gift, or a girlfriend or boyfriend trying to be supportive with the right kind of surprise for their beloved geek, sometimes it can be a daunting experience to enter the lair of the great unwashed (I say this with tongue in cheek of course) should you yourself not be fully vested within the fandoms celebrated therein. Full disclosure (and hopefully not a shock) - I am a self-professed hybrid of nerd and geek in equal measure. I like to think of myself as an ambassador, really, as I often have to play the role of translator between those who partake of comics and related hobbies, and those who do not. Outside of maybe the Guardtower (and even they, beloved as they may be, are a stalwart bastion of geeky sundries in and of themselves that can, on occasion, be a difficult nut to crack if the affected patrons arrive during a particularly busy evening of activity), the Laughing Ogre is a place where any of the forementioned well-intended purchasers can go with certainty of understanding, acceptance, patience, and service with a smile. These guys know their stuff. They're friendly too. Moreover, they offer helpful suggestions for those who may only possess the rough-cut vagaries of the interests of their loved ones. I've been to many comic book places in my 36 years, and these guys are at the top. For those of us who dabble or know their stuff, well, they get high marks in that area as well. Suffice it to say, I've never been left wanting in either obtaining the comic book I require, be it standard issue or trade paperback, nor any related collectible or paraphernalia. My wallet is typically lighter becasue of their efforts if not their joviality in helping me empty it in the process. So go there with confidence. I have been for years. read more

From the time you walk in to the time you check out, it's a great experience....your wallet might disagree lol. When you walk in your great by the employees. They are all friendly and know your name and face. All the current issues are arranged alphabetically which helps to find new books. They always ask how your pull was for that week and if you want to change it add. I prefer contacting them through Facebook for a paper trail. I live out in Reynoldsburg, so it's a bit of a drive. The Ogre is quite simply THE place for comics in Central Ohio. It rivals most shops in the country, and is only outpaced by stores like Forbidden Planet and Quimby's (in NYC and Chicago). Their selection of current issues takes up a huge wall, they've got a gigantic collection of trades and graphic novels (each time I buy one, they log it, assumedly so they can replace it ASAP) many of which are organized by writer/artist, and a respectably large and complete section containing the most significant collections from the larger indie publishers. They even have a whole bunch of longboxes full of back issues (lots of stores have stopped bothering with that). And, of course, if you don't see it, ask - they can get it. Something like 700 people use their pull service, so you know they're doing something right. It probably has a lot to do with the service, the guys (and gals, holy moly) who run the place are always friendly, always eager to help out or talk shop, and are very knowledgeable (though they're currently lacking in some indie expertise). It should be noted that The Ogre recently became part of the Phoenix Comics chain (it's a tiny chain), which led to the store nearly doubling in size. A couple of long-time employees (and the owner) departed. I still enjoy the place, but will be wary of more changes. I should also note the large manga section, comics-related magazines, lots of trading cards, a hundred or so statues and busts, and a wealth of action figures. Most of the time when I am buying something for my husband, I'm forced to survive a gauntlet of nerds (computer stuff, video games, comic books, etc.) It's almost like they can sense that I don't belong. That's never happened here. In fact, I've always received such incredible, friendly and helpful service I often forget that I'm out of my element. They immediately great me when I come in, offer to help me find what I'm looking for and sometimes even help me find things that even I didn't know I needed! Not to mention, they are super awesome with my 2-year-old son. This is hands down the best comic book shop I have been to, and I have been to a lot. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I think I purchased everything from their "recommended reading" area and haven't been disappointed yet. I am in often enough that they have started to learn the books I like and make recommendations based my previous purchases. It is the kind of place where you can start a conversation about anything, the next thing you know you are talking to one of the staff and three customers. It behooves me to say that I read very few comics. I don't mean, like, I read only a few weekly titles. I mean more along the lines of I read a graphic novel every few years, maybe. That said, I go into the Ogre whenever I'm in the area. Part of me is just nostalgic for comic book stores and the feeling I've had, ever since I was young, that comic books are this vast, huge, confusing world that is far beyond my ken and power to keep up with- so why try? The Laughing Ogre is more than just another comic book store, though. Recently expanded and reorganized, this place is big and packed to the gills with everything even tangentially related to the comics industry, from vinyl statuettes and hardcover graphic novels to tiny, handmade comix by local underground artists. This is the sort of comic book store I'd want to be my regular, if I was made of the right stuff to be a comic book nerd. C'est la vie- maybe next time 'round. read more

I went in to buy a comic that my friend Had his art on the main cover. I wanted to buy more than one copy. I had 10 and they told me I could only have 1. This has become my comic book shop after years of not going to one. I had randomly been to several over the years in various locations but always just to see what was new... not normally buying. Coming here for the first time I got that comic book shop feel that made me keep coming back. The selection is very good but this place appears to be busy so get in early or the ones you are after will be gone normally. It's so hard for me not to spend an entire paycheck at the Ogre, especially since it's within walking distance of my house. The interior is well-organized, with most of the comics listed in alphabetical order, and the graphic novels organized by publisher or type. Manga is separated out from Western-style, and some of the more popular authors even have their own shelves. They also carry work by smaller publishers and indie productions like my favorite, Oni Press. The employees are generally helpful and knowledgeable about the store, and give good recommendations based on what you've read and liked in the past. They're also always up to date on the latest and greatest series, and eager to talk about what they're reading. The Ogre also has a great selection of action figures, which are always fun to look at. The other day I saw that they had The Monarch from The Venture Brothers show, and it took every ounce of self-control I had not to buy him. He really wanted to come home with me and be BFFs with Mal from Firefly on my display shelf. If you've been driving by this little shop for years and never stopped by, maybe it's time to do so. Even if you don't know comics very well, you'll be surprised by all of the cool discoveries you make inside. read more

The Laughing Ogre is the most well known and probably most profitable comic shop in all of Columbus. That being the case, it still has that vibe you expect of a comic shop. Comic fans are loyalists, and if you make a trip on new comic day every week, chances are they know you by name. I've seen Jeff Smith, creator and publisher of Bone, in here, just stopping in, perusing like anyone else - not some sort of signing event. It's also really well laid out and clean. My favorite shop back in WV was dingy and smelly, which I liked, but this is a nice change of pace in that regard. There are tons of comics to sort through and plenty of oddball stuff. They used to host pen and paper gaming in the back, not sure if that still goes on or not. Great place and definitely the go-to option for comics in CBus. read more

I've never really been into comic books, but lately I've been finding myself more and more interested in them so, after reading some of the reviews here, I decided to head down to The Laughing Ogre. I was impressed. My image of comic book stores has been almost exclusively shaped by their portrayals in pop-culture, so I was half-expecting something dark and musty staffed by arrogant geeks who would look down their noses at me for not knowing about comics. The Laughing Ogre was the exact-opposite of that: When I walked in I was struck by how bright and cheery and well-kempt the store was. There were numerous display shelfs that seemed to be organized by theme. I immediately found one that interested me and started leafing through. After that I asked the staff for some help. I told him the comic I'd been reading that had piqued my interest and he and another staff person were eager to help me with recommendations. Having read through some of the comics I picked up today, my interest remains piqued and I'm looking forward to going back to pick up some more. I have feeling The Laughing Ogre will shape up to be an excellent place to nurture my budding hobby. read more

Time for an updated review I think! The Ogre remains the only location in town I buy comics and collectibles from. My pull is kept completely up to date, the guys and girls of the Ogre surprise me regularly with awesome recommendation for series I wouldn't have found any other way. Customers with a pull get a discount, they have regular sales and signings, are active with local conventions, and in general are just awesome people. With my job I seem to usually get stuck stopping by before work so it doesn't leave me much time to chat, I wish I had more time because these are great people to know who are very willing to talk to you not only about comics but local stuff going on around town. I'm serious, there hasn't been a time that I've walked in and not been asked how I am with genuine interest and made to feel welcome. Selection? Don't waste your time going to a chain bookstore. If you're looking for a particular trade/graphic novel they have shelf after shelf of them and if it's not something they have in stock they can either order it for you or give you a recommendation on where to find it. The shelves are full with new and recent issues, the back tables are chock full of back issues, and there are action figures, plushes, and other pop culture collectibles as far as the eye can see. Bonus: They also stock everything you need to store your comics, and a cheaper price than anything I've found online. You can have every comic on your pull automatically bagged and boarded for a very reasonable price; something like 25 or 50 cents, I forget. Have old issues you need some advice on? They can help, but call first and give them a heads up especially on new release day (Wednesday). I recently brought in two short boxes of old issues I forgot I had as a kid and they went over them for me and gave me advice on how to get the most out of them when selling them. If I haven't made it clear enough: THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. 10/10. Would Ogre again. read more

Finally after a hella long time of driving past this place and saying "We've got to go see whats in there" we finally did. Happy place for those who are into comics. I could've easily stayed there for hours pouring through the old classics and staring in stunned confusion at the new ones. Definitely the best comic book store I've ever seen. I've been a loyal customer since moving to Columbus in 2001, and it's only gotten better in that time. The Laughing Ogre has a great selection of titles, along with collectibles, but unlike other comic book stores I've been too, the focus stays on the comics. I love this place! The girls that work here and super friendly and know my husband (and our little guy!) by name. Every birthday or holiday I know all I have to do is go in and ask them what I should get. They always have great suggestions and are friendly, courteous and polite. One of the girls even saved a bunch of freebie Green Lantern toy things in the back just for my son! Now, I know that there was A customer checking out, but considering there was TWO employees, you would think one of them could help out. Horrible customer service, my fiancee called ahead of time for a comic he was told they had six he told them we would be there in 15 min to buy all six and was told ok. We get there and the owner then said since it's a hot comic he would only sell one per customer so then I said ok you buy one and I'll buy one the owner then looked at me and said I don't believe you want to read this so I will not sell you a copy. Laughing Ogre has been my comics shop of choice for several years now. The shop is always clean, the selection is outstanding (current popular offerings from Marvel and DC, smaller/indie publishers, kids' comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, it's all there), and I'm always greeted within seconds of coming in. The staff members seem genuinely interested in helping newbies with suggestions and advice, which is not always the case in niche hobbies. Printed comics are still alive and (mostly) well in large part because of shops like Laughing Ogre.
