We heard about their Halloween event and stopped by to check it out. What a great store and event! The staff was so friendly; we were welcomed and given a run down of what all was going on when we entered, including a food drive, a dozen trick or treat stations with either a toy or candy option at each, free Halloween comics table, and more. The store was all decorated for Halloween, including a kid-friendly Haunted House in a backroom, which was such a hit with my kid that we went through it four or five times! One space was all set up with chairs and tables with games, which were also available for browsing, along with collectibles, figures, and more. The main room, where you first enter, is packed full of comics, graphic novels, and books, including items for a variety of age ranges and interests. Parking is available in a lot out front. We'd love to stop by again. read more

Hate to say it, but the quality has dipped here a bit. I won't give a bad rating, I like to help small businesses. I've been going to this coming shop since 2007. A few years ago they had a basement section with some odds and ends collectibles, as well as many a single piece older comic. I'd go down there with my brother and browse for hours. Well that's gone now and it seems the focus is more on table top games in the upper section that used to focus on collectibles and action figures. While my initial impression was good, my first time shopping was less than pleasant due to an unhelpful clerk. I'm a bit torn on leaving a review for Packrat. First of all, let me say that they have a huge selection of comics and games. Also, the owners are fantastic people. They are always friendly and helpful. That being said, I think they should rethink bringing their children to work. Last year, my brother and I went in on a Saturday to play some of the games they offer (they teach you how to play too, which is neat). We were having fun until their youngest boy butted in with rude comments. Every time my brother would talk, the boy would say "shut up, no one likes you." We didn't really appreciate his input on anything, so we decided to leave. When we got up to leave, the boy stole my brothers sunglasses and wouldn't give them back. I'm not sure if he thought it was funny, but to us, he was just being a brat. After a few minutes, the boy finally THREW my brothers sunglasses at him. We left and haven't been back since. It's sad, because we really enjoyed going there pretty often. I wouldn't encourage anyone to stop going, but I would definitely warn you to keep an eye out for their kid. read more

The amount of of items Packrat carries is incredible! They also stock a sizable amount of each issue, so I haven't had any trouble finding what I'm looking for. It's also a great place if you're looking for back issues. The main floor has all of the brand new stuff, but there's a huge basement full of vintage comics. Most back issues are only $1. The owner is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you have trouble keeping up with the plot of a particular series, ask him. He'll be able to explain the current storyline up to the point you've read, so he won't spoil the ending like Wikipedia will. The location is great for those who live on the west side of town. You'll be able to make it there and back to home/work in no time. It's tucked away in a strip mall on a side street, so you'll want to Google the directions. However, it's right off of Main Street and nearby a lot of other shops/bars, so you can pop in for 5 minutes along the way. It's a great place to shop, and it's definitely the perfect place to find gifts for the geek on your list. read more

I found myself in need of Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead Volume 13. I could have ordered it off Amazon, but waiting really isn't my thing, so I popped up Google maps, typed in my address, then entered "Comic Books." Of course Laughing Ogre was there. As the quintessential comic shop in Columbus, everyone expects it to show up in a search. But Laughing Ogre would have meant a long-long lunch, versus a long lunch, and parking on campus is always a problem, even during breaks. Then I noticed something else. Packrat Comics tucked away in Hilliard. Being only a few minutes away, and with most of the rest of the crew absent for lunch today, I figured I had little to lose. Packrat is in a small multi-tenant off-traffic strip mall, nestled between a vacant storefront and a pizza place, and sharing the strand with a photo studio and pet salon. Looking at the front door, I suddenly grew a bit fearful; was it going to be Comic Town shiny, or Guard Tower grey inside? I feared the grey. On opening the door, however, I was delightfully surprised. The inside was relatively small, but well organized, warm, welcoming, and spotless. The comic book guy behind the counter (who was the antithesis of his Simpson's namesake) was helpful and knew right where to find the tome I needed. I paid for my goods and asked how long they had been there in Hilliard, assuming they were a year or so old. Not even close. They've been there for several years, and appear to be still going strong, even in this age of digital downloads and internet shopping. If you're in need of a comic, I can't recommend this local business enough. Give them a shot, particularly now that Comic Town has gone all out-of-print. read more

I'm embarrassed that I've lived near Old Hilliard for so long and am just now discovering this hidden gem. Be sure to check out the basement, which houses thousands of back issues, most priced at $1. Also, the "Rogues Gallery" is a new addition to the basement: a small, but neat room for signings, movie screenings, and lined with original art by fans and known artists, which will change depending on featured contests and events. The owner of this store really knows his comics. You can't ask for more from a local business, and I can't wait to go back and buy some more comics! read more

I spent a few minutes looking around, and started to collect a nice stack of comics I wanted to buy. After a few moments the shop-girl greeted me and then told me there was a whole lower level! I proceeded to spend a few more minutes looking around downstairs. If I had more money I probably would have spent HOURS in the basement. I limited myself to only 10.00, but ended up spending 40. With no regrets. This is the type of place my dad and I would visit often. I'm glad these types of places still exist. Its a really comforting kind of feeling. Wonderful owners and hands down the biggest selection I have seen. From board games to POP figures and a vast assortment of collectibles including The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Walking Dead, Transformers, Aliens, lots of kids related items, more variety than I could possibly remember or put into a review. I am not sure if an individual could read all of the material available in a lifetime, and that was just the main show room, I never made it to the basement. I don't go to Packrat very often, because if I did, I'd have no money and I don't have room for any more action figures on my wall. When I do indulge myself with a visit to this fine establishment, I always head straight through the storefront and down to the basement, where they store thousands and thousands of old comics, most of which they'll sell you for a dollar. The last time I was there, I scored several issues of Tank Girl, the Venus Wars manga, and even a couple of old Ren & Stimpy comics. If you go, be prepared to spend a long time there. read more

It's a nice and very clean place, I found a gift for the birthday guy, and even got questions answered when I asked about card gaming and such. He told me there was a downstairs too but I didn't have time to stop and check it out. Every Geeks paradise, here. My god, this is probably by far the best comic store I've ever walked into. The staff are great. Very knowledgeable. And if you ask, they have a fun filled secret room down in the cellar filled with vintage comics. I spent hours there one afternoon. Prices are awesome, and the owner is very down to earth. My only criticism is that I went there one day and a sign said they would be right back. I went back to my car since it was raining and waited 15 minutes before deciding to leave. I couldn't get my geek on and was very frustrated. But, of course I've been back several times. Who would have thought this developing farm town would have such a place. read more

Such a wonderful little shop! I went today in search of the new Locke & Key. Within in minute of being in the shop I was helped out by the staff and had my issue in hand in no time. It is a small space but very organized, open and bright. They have a couch towards the front where two smaller children were watching old Thundercats cartoons. I explored some more in the basement and was greeted by a Doctor Who corner and many many back issues of comics lining the walls. There is also an area for Buffy comics and figures and a used graphic novel section. Be sure to get directions unless you know the area well. Also the road is right off two of those roundabouts Hilliard loves to much, so keep your wits about you. I can't wait to go back! read more

Even though I'm trying very hard to not slip into the $30 a week comic book habit I had in college, it's really nice to have a neighborhood shop again. The folks at Packrat are fun, approachable, polite, and have a store chock full of unique and interesting stuff, from the latest issues and books on their first floor to the basement filled with backissues, toys, and video games. In addition to providing a heavy dose of geektopia for Hilliard, they're also heavily involved in Free Comic Book Day each year, providing an artist's alley, family games, bouncy castles for the kids, and space for both local and national comics creators to come out and get attention from the community. There are four primary reasons that I shop at Packrat Comics. 1. Back issues- the basement is chock full of them. 2. A dollar bin- the basement is even more chock full of them. 3. Wide selection of new books from different publishers. 4. Service. These aren't the only things they excel at but these are the things I care mostly about. Packrat delivers on all fronts and I do want to give a special shout out for their service. I was trying to track down a copy of Dept. H #1 that had come out a week earlier. I called on my way home from work and sadly they were sold out.
