I had the "Junk it or pay to try to fix?" debate in my head and decided to risk a small amount if someone could run diagnostics. I found DJ Computers on Yelp and drove over with my laptop this morning. It turned out to be one of the main likelihoods he mentioned - Windows OS corrupted - and (with my pre-approval) he installed a clean new copy of the OS (I had successfully made backups).
