My laptop was hacked with a new, highly sophisticated attack (likely created using artificial intelligence). I was very concerned about passwords and account access being compromised. The Computerland manager, Hadi, explained that they could fix part of the attack but there was a 5% chance that additional, undetectable threats could have been installed by the hackers - and there was no way to tell if this had happened. Because I was so concerned about my passwords and accounts, he could have easily convinced to let them do the work and I would have been none the wiser of the 5% risk. We agreed on a process for me to reinstall Windows on my machine to completely remove the problem, and I have enough knowledge to do that myself. Hadi did not charge me at all for that advice. Computerland is highly trustworthy and has amazing integrity. I unconditionally recommend them if you're having technical issues. read more

AMAZING STAFF, OWNER & BUSINESS!!! These guys worked with me so hard. I had completely disassembled my $400 HP printer, put it back together and something went wrong and the screen wouldn't light up. They're not only found the tiny wire inside a very, very small cable that I have broken, they showed me a picture of it and gave me a complete tutorial. then they went on to explain why my printer wasn't working anymore. It had smeared printing because over five years, I've been using aftermarket toner on an HP printer. I then asked for a recommendation on a high volume printer for home use. That's in between category between home desktop and large office printers. They said they didn't know but they researched it and called me back a couple of days later with really excellent advice I took and purchased the printer they recommended! Then one day I was nearby installed a large projection system and didn't have a long enough power cable. I went in and explained and they gave me a 10 foot power cable for free. But most important these people are are very friendly as well as mean technical experts... But very humble about it and they really listen care about the customers. Wow! read more

My Toshiba Satelite P55W DJ-slash-work laptop is one of those hybrid "360" models where the screen flips around to where it can function as a bulky tablet or as a presentation screen in addition to a laptop. As a DJ computer, I've leaned heavily on the screen-touch functionality as part of my workflow. When that suddenly died one day, I was listless, languid, and lost. I was hesitant to get it fixed, thinking it might cost as much as just getting a new laptop, but the crew at Computerland made fixing a financially viable option. Turns out it was a connection issue, not a screen failure, and they got it sorted for me right away. Hooray! I also tried upgrading the hard drive to an SSD on my own, but apparently lacked the dexterity to get all the teeny connecting wirely-bits to line up correctly, most likely due to my long nails, and my low frustration tolerance level in dealing with the complexity of it. Computerland's crew figured it out like it was no big deal, and called me the next day to explain it, and I could pick it up when I was ready. Awesome! The prices are reasonable, and they are just a few blocks from the Berkeley stop; no need for a car. Go bring in your problem puters and see what they think--it might not be as terrible a solution as you presuppose; it could be pretty great. read more

My mother got tricked into downloading bad software by a scammer. I contacted Computerland and they knew exactly what to do. I brought in her Apple Desktop and they replaced her iOS and saved/reinstalled all of her data (had to wipe some apps to make sure that the tracking software wasn't embedded within). ResurrectionLand: A Tale of Backup Failures, Mac Mishaps, and Data Salvation So, you know the drill: Backup, backup, backup. Right? But did I do it? Of course not. I mean, who *really* expects things to go wrong... until they do. And boy, did things go wrong. My beloved early-2015 4K iMac, the one I lovingly named "The Holy Grail of Gadgets," starts acting up about a year ago. What did I do? Absolutely nothing. Ignored it like a bad ex. And Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decides to *update* their Macs--great, but they only offer a 2TB drive now. And here I am, stuck with my 2015 iMac's 3TB Fusion Drive. Big mistake. Huge. Fusion Drives are basically the "mystery meat" of the Mac world. They look good on paper, but eventually, you'll be paying the price. And then the waiting game began. "Any day now, the new M2/M3/M4 iMacs will come with a 3TB option," I thought. Spoiler: they didn't. So, I finally break down and order the new M4 Pro Mac Mini. It arrives. I plug it in. Time to migrate my old iMac's data. Migration Assistant says, "Oh, don't worry, just 154 hours to go!" A full week and a half of my life! I let it do its thing and go to bed, thinking I'll wake up to a shiny new Mac full of old memories. But no. The next morning, migration stalls. I reboot both computers like some sort of tech priest performing a ritual, and bam--my iMac is dead. Not "almost dead." Not "in a coma." DEAD. And then... the reality hits. My TimeMachine backup was a myth. A *legend* never to be realized. And the Time Capsule it was on? Gone. *Gone* like the last slice of pizza at a party. So, off to the Apple store I go, hoping for a miracle. They keep my iMac for two days, only to return it to me with... *an OS, but no data*. What? No files, no pictures, no memories of the last five years--nothing. Just an empty shell. So, I take it back, they keep it for three more days, and then--*bam*, the dreaded call. "Yeah, so... we couldn't save it. It's dead. You're welcome to kick rocks." But, bless the Apple employee who had some compassion and referred me to **Computerland** in Berkeley, saying, "They might be able to help. That was my *moment of hope*. So, like a kid getting his first taste of candy, I sign up and send my iMac off. Now, let me tell you, not all dead drives are created equal. But in my case?
