Price - Expensive, but we are in Pebble Beach. Resort Guest $365. Non-Resort Guest $365 + cart fee. Cart Fee - $60 per person. Pull Cart Fee - $20. Single Bag Caddie - $155. Double Bag Caddie - $210. Probably been said many times, but beautiful resort and golf courses. Top notch service! Friendliness of staff was over and above my expectations. They make you feel comfortable and welcome. This was on our bucket list and it didn't disappoint. Even if you don't golf, it's a beautiful getaway. 17 mile drive was a tremendous tour of the coastline and forest. This has got to be one of my favorite courses in the area. People often say that Spanish Bay is the weakest of the 3 major Pebble Beach offerings of Pebble, Spyglass, and Spanish (no offense to Del Monte) but i think it has its place. Links style courses are not really common in NorCal - of the courses I've played, the Baylands in Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay Ocean, and Spanish Bay count as links style with rolling fairways and lots of wind. To my recollection there are no sod-lined pot bunkers here so that makes it a little less scary but hitting good approach shots is still required here. I would say that if you don't care about playing at Pebble Golf Links and you just want a solid course with ocean views, Spanish Bay will be more than adequate for you and help you save some $$$$. My favorite hole is the par 3 8th "Marsh Corner" for its intimidating forced carry. The entire hole is surrounded by sand and tourists of the 17 mile drive will also be watching you hit your shot. I also holed out twice - one for birdie and one for par so it was an epic day. Don't forget to take pictures of the ocean in the background on the 15th hole green. Finally, there is no driving range here so warm up at Pebble - just give them your tee time and course you're playing and the fine attendants at Pebble will invite you to grab a basket of balls to hit off their grass range. The course is so pure. it's the least expensive of all the pebble beach links and has incomparable ocean views. With the ncga membership it's even cheaper. The day wasn't sunny just overcast which was perfect for golf, breezy but not too much wind. No driving range so it was a little tough to warm up but the putting and chipping greens are great. The course is so well kept and very different from most of the other courses in NorCal. Simply put, you have to know what to expect beforehand with links golf. The greens are very hard like an 11 probably, rolls and bounces a lot so leave it short a lot. The yardage book is super helpful here, gives an overview of each hole and an idea of how to play it. The guy in the front hooked it up with one for us on the house. The ocean is ripping in the background of all the first like 7 holes then the ones inside holes in the forest are also beautiful. I think like 14/18 holes have ocean views. It's iconic. The grass doesn't have any dry patches. It's immaculate. The cards don't come with divot sand fillers though. The gift shop is pricey but the items are great quality and you'll only get so many chances in life to play pebble. PS I'm just a spectator my boyfriend is the one who plays and teaches me all these things hes played spy glass several times in tournaments and said this one is even better. 5 stars! happy golfing! Ok, I don't golf, but this place is notable for hosting some of the monarchs that have flown over from the reserve. I heard a rumor of a swarm by the driving range and was able to see some butterflies. Some places you will not be allowed to go, but the monarchs were by the bushes and trees that were nearer to the road, so it's all good. Down by the parking lot, facing the road, is a public bathroom. It is vital that you read the sign in the attached pix. read more

Beautiful course--top five that I've had the opportunity to play in my lifetime. Spanish Bay is a well-designed course architecturally; there is not a lot of room to miss off the tee, but most of the greens are bigger (really hilly--you don't want to be on the wrong tier) as you would expect for a links style course. Even better than the hole layouts are the scenic views that accompany this course. You can see the Pacific Ocean on at least 14/18 holes, with a few of the holes gracefully cutting through the Del Monte Forest (No. 10 is my favorite). Staff at the pro shop, restaurant, and cart garage were all very friendly and were part of a great experience! Side notes: 1) If you're planning to hit range balls, Spanish Bay does not have a driving range--you'll have to visit the Pebble Beach Practice Academy, which is about a 15 minute drive from Spanish. 2) Each night, Spanish Bay hosts a live bagpiper that walks up and back on hole two. The bagpiper usually begins around 5:30-5:45 and plays for about an hour. Sticks, the restaurant at Spanish Bay, has a nice outdoor patio that's a great viewing spot for the performance. read more

Can you get a better snack cart guy? We pay however much to stay and play golf here, and want to have an enjoyable time. Then you have some ass hole driving around who doesn't give a shit about the people he's serving. It's embarrassing. How strong is the Union that pebble beach resorts can't get an amenable friendly person serving drinks on one of their courses. read more

Nice fairways, nice greens. But not good value for the money. I've played municipal courses with more amenities. Golf cart had no tees, no ball washer, and noice chest or GPS, like much less costly courses provide. It was explained that the corporation encouraged caddies to maximize profits. read more

My name is Dave Wilson and I'm recently retired military. I've had a bucket list to play golf out in Monterey Ca for quite a few years now. I finally made my reservations (booked 2 courses and had a maybe a 3rd course (if my body could handle it, many operations) and took a journey by myself to the great unknown. My first place was Spyglass where they greeted me with a great WELCOME to the course and thank you for your service. They made me feel appreciated and welcomed at the same time. Had a great day there and everybody's attitude was spot on and very professional to say the least. Next, was The Links at Spanish Bay on Tuesday at 9:50 am I walked in and a gentleman with longer dark hair late 40's early 50's he stated Mr Wilson?? I said yes. He then asked me if I was active or retired military and I said retired just like I told everyone on the ph. He then proceeded to tell me in very derogatory voice (publicly) that the discount doesn't apply to retired military personnel,,,, then kept telling me that he can't do anything about now,,,, very cold angry smart ass reply and I kept my mouth shut and walked out to the first tee. I have NEVER been humiliated and embarrassed and talked down to in my entire lifetime like this gentleman treated me. I NEVER got how's your day going, we appreciate your service and are you enjoying your time out here??????????? I was going to go back in and ask for a refund but I was already there and tried to put this horrible experience to bed then and there,,,,, My first 2 holes were awful,,,,and again almost quit I was still so upset If it wasn't for my foursome convincing me to stay, much appreciated. I tried to hand everything off to GOD and he seemed to calm things down for me a little bit. My only goal here is to have NO Active/Retired military personal ever go thru what I went thru with this gentleman EVER again I will I post this every 2 weeks on all social media until I get a Public Apology But these things need to happen 1. The clubhouse should have told us that Spanish Bay does not have a driving range. "Oh yeah -you must go to Spy Glass to use their range." For the super-inflated price they charge, you would think that their carts would have the software on the windshield that shows you the course layout, the next hole, the bunkers, etc. I know you can use your iPhone for that- but why not? The pace was VERY slow. Who wants to play a 5 hour round of golf? Everything about the place is about making the most money. Great views etc. But I'm not returning to this course. Worst product in golf. It's incredibly expensive and you have to wait 10 minutes a hole on the back nine. The course is great, but the Ownership (ahem, Clint Eastwood) group only cares about maximizing profit and DOES NOT care about providing a good golf experience for its guests that pay more at Spanish Bay than any other public course. The cheapest of the big boy courses at Pebble. The best I can describe this course is its a better value, better view, and overall better everything version of half moon bay's ocean course. Tee boxes - perfect shape. Fairways - challenging but fair. Not as much undulation as I expected Greens - tough. Lots of tiered greens and greens that spit your ball back out. Views - top notch Pricing - really fair. With walking / push carts under $325 pp. Food - the food guy here is top notch. Some courses I see the cart guy/girl 1 time a round. We saw him 4 times. Well fed/hydrated. Overall - a great course. Don't forget to budget time to go to the PB practice range (10 min drive) before your round to warm up. And lunch after is great! On the bucket list for most golfers is playing a course like Pebble Beach. When the U.S. Open is being played at Pebble Beach, the opportunities to play at some of the sister courses arise, and we were fortunate enough to have that experience at Spanish Bay! From the pro shop to the condition of the fairways to the picturesque holes next to the ocean, this place left little to be desired! We play during a particularly busy day with a shotgun start and two groups per hole. It definitely wasn't the sort of day where we were going to play 3 1/2 hour round, but it did give us a chance to really explore the holes. It also gave us a chance to explore the rough and the foliage outside of the roof. On a day where we had plenty of time to explore, we found 117 golf balls! Because it was a nice course, many of the people who hits at golf balls into theFoundries felt that they should be playing nice golf balls. This work to our favor! The course was definitely pricey but for courses of this caliber, you generally get what you pay for, and this was no exception. It was one of the most fun and one of the nicest courses we've ever played. If you have the opportunity and are down in the area, it's worth it to take a half-day and go play a spot that's unlike any other we've ever had the chance to play on. read more

In town to play Pebble Beach of course. So we played four courses in three days when we were in town. Spanish Bay was surprised experience. We really enjoyed this place. Most of the views were off the ocean, so this can be difficult at times with the winds. Yes, try to keep your balls on the fairways or greens. This course will make it very difficult with the lush rough, and areas you can not play from. You are allowed carts on the fairways, 90° only. Fairways are tricky and with a lot of hidden hazards so a yardage book from the pro shop is a must if this is your first time here. Everyone was very nice, and we had a great time. If we ever come back to the area, along with Pebble Beach this course is a must again. read more

First, I need to provide a context for my experience. I'm an avid golfer (some might say addicted to golf). I play 2-3 times weekly even in the rainy winter months of California. As such, I have always wanted to play at Pebble Beach. The views, the immaculate fairways, and greens are a golfer's fantasy. Thus, at the encouragement of my wife I decided to treat myself to a week of golf for my 65th birthday. I made a few reservations (golf school and private lessons - my goal is to be a scratch golfer). I arrived a day early and was driving the "17 mile drive", enjoying the views and uber wealth of the area. I was passing Spanish Bay and decided to stop in and look around. I parked by the Inn at Spanish Bay and as I was exiting my vehicle I was approached by one of the employees. First impressions are lasting impressions and this interaction was very negative. I decided to telephone the golf reservations where I had made the arrangements and was transferred to the manager who was very nice and stated a couple of times "this is not who we are." On Tuesday I received a call from the golf reservations and asked if I was intending on keeping my reservation for later that day. I returned the call to clarify the error - I was scheduled for a playing lesson the following day with one of the golf pros (Petra). The reservation person informed me that they had scheduled me with the golf pro for the the day she was calling as well as the following day. When I informed her that this was in error, she became upset which was easily discerned even over the telephone. An hour or so later I received yet another call, this time from the head pro who informed me that Petra was no longer available for my playing lesson the following day (my birthday). I thought to myself "Hmmm, if she was scheduled for me that day and the following day as the first reservation person had previously stayed then why was she suddenly unavailable?" He profusely apologized and stated "this is not who we are." He offered to allow me to continue with my original booking and to play as a single or not. My perception was that they would prefer that I not play. The level of passive aggressiveness was palpable. "Not who [you] are" - actually my interactions are exactly "who pebble is". I began this odyssey with the perception that Pebble Beach was one of golf's Mecca. The truth is that while the fairways are watered much more often, have better grass, and are maintained better - the rest is an illusion. It's all smoke and mirrors. The truth is that unless you're driving a Bentley (yes, there are several out front), you're not welcome. My Audi, while a perfect car for me, is viewed as a servant's vehicle - something they would purchase for the nanny to drive the kiddos around in. I recommend that you take a pass on the Pebble courses and enjoy yourself at a course where your patronage will be valued and you will be treated with respect. read more

Where to start, Me and my 10 friends were excited to play the course for the first time. But we didn't expect the rude treatment from some of the staff for the price of $315. At the bag drop off, the staff was lazy and didn't offer to help unload our golf bags and pull cart. He just stood their and told us we can carry our bags down the walking path. Then after checking in, the starter told me he's going to call us up early before our tee times, but he totally forgot and started yelling at us to tee off right away. Then on the 2nd hole, the Marshall told us we needed to pick up the pace and that we're two holes behind the group in front, which wasn't true because we saw the group in front of us just getting off the green. And then on the 12th hole, the Marshall said we're two holes behind and that he was going to call the head pro and have us skip a hole. So we hurry and finish the hole to find the group in front of us we're just hitting their balls onto the green. And it gets worse. A group behind one of our group bombed up on them. So one of our players told the Marshall about it, and he said, "Well you're 20mins behind pace". This was so unprofessional of him, and what suppose to be a great memorable golf outing ended up turning into an unpleasant day which left a bad taste in our mouth. But for some reason, the younger staffs that works their has been really nice to us. With all that said, you would expect to get the 5-Stars treatment for that sticker price , but I will never be coming back here again. read more

You have the option of sitting outside by the fire pits or in their cozy dining room. We got the fish tacos and a salad which were both very fresh and tasty. Their children's menu was quite impressive; it included your choice of side and a drink and the options were quite large. My wife says the shrimp was the best she has ever had! We actually ordered a second. Nice relaxing, sitting outside people watching the golfers. It was typical cold Monterey weather, but the fire place was wonderful! We arrived early, drove right in. Leaving it was a long line of cars arriving on the 17 mile drive. If you catch this course on a calm clear day with The Maestro working the first tee and lunch at the bar at Styx it's a life memory . The service in the pro shop is 5 star as is the service at Styx . If you book a tee time ask if The Maestro is working he's an amazingly unique individual who will literally make a great day better . A quality track. Sometimes people will complain about the difficulty of some of the greens, there are some with multi-tiers and are super undulating. It's definitely not an easy track so if that's what you want, just head over to Pacific Grove instead. A lot of holes were actually more forced carries and such so I didn't quite get the sense that I was playing a links-style track but the views on the front and back 9 are fantastic. If it's your first time out there, I would recommend getting a caddy. You can drive on the fairways so that's a plus if you prefer to ride. It's a relatively walkable course if you prefer that as well. Staff is super friendly as was our caddy (Scott). read more

this is my 2nd favorite among the Pebble Beach courses (PB #1 duh) many (most?) of the holes have an ocean view. The first hole is a beautiful way to start, a fairly easy par-5 headed directly to the ocean. being on the green there stunning staff is great, from the golf shop to the starters beware of the crows. they are super aggressive and will find any food in your cart. they even recognize unopened, wrapped protein bars and will pull them out of the cart and open them. crazy read more

Slump busting - go to the bar and pick up on ugly girls, baseball players bunt for a base hit; just do anything to break your slump. I've been in a Yelp slump, with three one-star ratings in the past month. Not in my character to visit one star places, but hey...I didn't plan it. What to do? The Links at Spanish Bay is part of the Pebble Beach Resorts located in beautiful Monterey, CA. With over half the holes either on the ocean or within view of the ocean, this championship caliber course truly is worth its $260 (walking) green fee. But me? $135 plus a bonus $50 gift card. That's the special they have every so often for NCGA members. The gift card was to compensate us for green aeration, but with my putting stroke, it didn't make a difference. The course is not overly hard or long, and even if you don't hit in the fairway all the time you can still scramble and get a decent score. Greens are quick, fairways roll, but the rough is not impossible to hit out of. And the service? First class. What I saved on the course was quickly paid for after our round. Five beers, onion rings, and fried calamari put me out $100, but hey...I was happy. Five stars all the way...that's the way to break out of slump. read more

"Golf and sex are the only things you can enjoy without being good at them." -Jimmy DeMaret I played Spanish Bay as part of a corporate event. Do yourself a huge favor and bring plenty of balls (bring 12 more than you usually play with). The ocean backdrop is beautiful, but there are plenty of "Environmental Sensitive Areas" that you cannot retrieve your golf balls from (I easily lost 18 balls on the day and I'm not a bad golfer). I actually didn't miss my clubs at all - the Callaway rentals were great (Burner driver and X-22 irons). The course could also double as a crow sanctuary - everything we hid in the cart (Snickers bar wrapped in a towel, bags of potato chips, and a sandwich in a plastic container) were eaten by the crows. They wait for you to walk away and go to town on the food in your cart (very impressive). read more

My favorite course to play in the Monterey Area for the following reasons: - As much on the ocean as Pebble (7 holes on or very near the ocean, 3 more holes with great ocean views) - not as rigorously tough as Spyglass - not as expensive as Pebble and Spyglass - service at the same level as the other two - I enjoy the links style of courses Why only 4 stars: - layout is a little goofy at times - some holes seem a little strangely positioned or organized - rates were raised to $250 Is Pebble a grander and more beautiful course? Yes. Is Spyglass a true golf challenge is a beautiful setting? Yes. Is Poppy a much better deal? definitely. But with the class and character (and for the occasional splurge) of a great course Spanish Bay is easier to get on, less expensive (hard to say that with a straight face when fees are $250) than it's sister courses, and has as much scenery as the others. IT is still very challenging for every golfer. I had some pretty high expectations coming here warranted by price and prestige. I had done a lot of research prior on weather this time of year, tournaments, and local events. Simply, I didn't want a overwhelming crowd. That said, we arrived Labor Day weekend! Busy yes, the staff was amazing and handled business like pros. We and stayed at the Inn and arrived day prior to our tee time. That night the piper came out that dusk and the sunset perfectly behind him, the course highlighted the entire event, like it was painted in gold. Views were spectacular! I couldn't wait to get out on the course and play...I was like a two year old boy. In fact, my sons joined us on the trip, and my 2 year old and I ran out on the course at sunset (no one was on the course) and played hide-and-go-seek in the bunkers. He had a blast raking them, he thought it was so fun, and cried when I took the rake away. Since we were staying at the Inn we had booked our tee time months in advance to assure an early start (8am). Our caddy was prompt and spot on. It's great having someone know realistically what your golf game is, and keep you in check from trying to drive the green when you should layup. Also, to let you know Condoleezza Rice is going to be teeing off behind you (she has a house there). Like you probably know this is a links style course with plenty of ice plant to get gobble your balls. The views are fantastic, the course is scattered with deep sand traps, and deer that will stair and heckle you (if Condoleezza Rice wasn't enough to throw your game off). Pricey...yes about $250. However, after a short trip down to Carlsbad most of the courses there wanted the same amount (I.e. aviara, la costa, maderas) but they don't come close to this same experience. For me Spanish Bay was a warm up round to Spyglass Hill, and then the Links at Pebble Beach. The courses are all different, Spanish Bay however is definitely was a warm welcome. The course played average for the price of greens fees. Many of the fairways had been mowed to close to the dirt. Also many areas of grass that were like stubble with dramatic large areas that looked like the grass had some kind of disease. We had a foursome behind us that hit into our foursome three times with their caddy. Very unprofessional. I always love it here, the room with the ocean view, and to the golf course, the restaurants here, the lounge, Peppoli and Roy are all good. During Pebble Beach Food & Wine and Concours d'Elegance show, are a great time to be here if you love actions. You need to book rooms months in advance. Prime location, this past week, we saw the unveiled of the the 1st production McKaren 720s Fux Fuschia color by and for philanthropist Michael Fux whom is a collector of over 150 exotic cars. He uses his cars to raise money for his foundation to help less fortunate children. An amazing man, an immigrant from Cuba with no education but a heart of gold. We also saw just about every exotic car here including the Porsche 918 Spyder that my boyfriend was so in love with. The Pagani, Bugati, Pur Blanc, Lamborghini, and plenty of Ferraris.... Service is always good here. And if you like quiet time, winter is a good time to be here, chill and peaceful. read more

Spanish Bay is an economic alternative to Spyglass and Pebble. It has rolling fairways and lots of iceplant to deal with. This is one of the more challenging courses I have played at and offers spectacular views just like its sister courses. Being a part of the Pebble Beach Resort, the service is on par with the other courses and the Lodge: unmatched. Great course to play if you want to pretend your're in Ireland playing a true links course, built around the lay of the land not in spite of it. read more

Who can complain about any food and beverage joint at Pebble Beach that allows dog? With three in tow, the five of us loved this place. Spent most of my time meandering between the epic firepits and the beach. Wide open views and fast and courteous service. The food was all top-notch. The kids had a really good time. TIP: if you have a larger group, go early to secure a fire pit. Seat around a dozen. I'd say early being by 6pm in the summer. Keep an ear out for the famous and legendary bagpiper on the 18th hole. He marches over to the patio after the last golfers have exited the green. Truly a class act. Dress, classy casual. read more

It's really hard not to give this place 5 stars, so i will. It's one of the world class golf destinations within the Pebble Beach golf courses and is gorgeous. Outstanding course, but I will say, be forewarned, it's a VERY tough course. If you're not a skilled golfer, you will lose a lot of balls in the ocean, the rough areas and 'environmentally sensitive areas' that you are not allowed to step into. ;) Oh, and it's very long (many holes are over 500 yards). That said, I would recommend WALKING the course vs. driving a golf cart. Sounds counter-intuitive, but because golf carts must stay on the cart paths, having a cart actually slows you down tremendously because you keep having to walk to and from your cart to get another club. Nice course, but 5 hour + rounds are just not fun. Marshal said there was a slow group ahead of us. They asked them to speed up, but they didn't. How about doing your job and after 2 warnings, move them back into position. 2 1/2 open holes ahead of the had the entire golf course backed up. read more

I loved the Links at Spanish Bay. I had the pleasure of playing back-to-back rounds at Spyglass and Spanish Bay. Absolutely stunning views and a wonderfully maintained course. It is very, very difficult though. It is narrow and incredibly undulated up and down the fairways. Almost every shot is a bad lye, or blind. A great final touch is the old Scot playing his bagpipes at sunset. I felt like William Wallace a few times coming down the final fairways. Where's my blue war paint? 4.5 stars for being expensive (really the only real negative), rounded up to 5 stars. This course is awesome. Being inside 17-mile drive area right next to famous Pebble Beach course, I had high expectations going in here. After all, you (not me in this case, as it was birthday gift) are paying hefty green fees to play. There is no driving range available here. You can use the driving range at Spyglass, which is only about 7-8 minutes away. It's also a very nice drive along the water from Spanish Bay to Spyglass. The balls are complimentary there, so hit as much as you want. Also, you do not have to pay the entrance fee of $9.50 if you are playing golf (this or any other course inside). The staff will verify your teetime on their record, and will let you in for free. Maybe I am a bit biased because I set my career-best score here (after posting career-worst... by FAR... on previous outing at Bridges). It's a fun course, and is in great shape. The pace was excellent (we did play on a weekday though)... did not run into anyone ahead of us, nor did we have anyone right behind us. We finished in about 4.5 hours, which I believe is the recommended pace. And that's with playing at a comfortable pace, with few pictures taken here and there. As others have pointed out, greens are fast. Pair that with some challenging slopes, a danger for the dreaded 3-putts is evident in many holes. I did okay though... even sank two fairly long ones. It was my lucky day. But it turns out that I wasn't all THAT lucky. A bird poo-ed on my back. I suppose it could've been worse.. like on my head.
