Probably my favorite public course...can't beat the price if you're an NCGA member for an amazing Pebble Beach Golf experience. Although it's on the Del Monte Forest side and no Ocean holes, the course is still beautiful and challenging with a mix of long and shorter holes, with sloping fairways, lots of bunkers, and difficult greens where you need to be strategic on approach shots, so it helps to play here a few times to get used to them. The course was in terrific shape today and pace was very good...finishing in a 4.5 hour round despite our group having lost a few balls along the way in the woods or thick native areas. I will say there were a few changes since I last played and I didn't remember it having so many waste bunkers everywhere the last time I came, which was at least 7 years ago. Although many people walk, I enjoyed having a cart because it's a rolling course and it can be quite a walk on a few holes to the next tee. I do wonder why they still don't have GPS on their carts. I would also suggest that they add some EV car chargers in the parking lot. Many of us drive 2 hours or more to get here so it would be a nice touch to be able to charge up the car a bit during a round, or while having a beverage or two in Porters before hitting the road! It's been too long since I last visited and I won't wait that long again for sure! read more

What a great course. Probably one of my top 3 favorites of all time. This is actually the first time I've played here since the renovation to the course 12+ years ago and it's still as great as I remember. The staff across the board here were great and very helpful. Cart girl was out there until 6:30PM as windy and as cold as it was and the longest I've seen stay at any course. Bar / restaurant staff from the starter even getting us out earlier than our tee time. Played here on a Friday at 3PM and was off the course at 7:02 playing as a 2 some. Course was in great shape, green rolling always true and quick. Bunkers are always strategically placed in n the right spots but the sand is pure and fluffy coming out. Definitely coming back again here before the 2026 season ends. read more

Played decent pace (4.5hrs) with mix gender tee boxes. Marshals tag-team our group through out about mid 9 holes pressuring our group to catch up to the team that is two holes ahead of us (when we tee off, there was no front group.), because three some behind us was fast. Even told us they will move us one hole ahead if we dont play faster. Messed up our mentality and enjoyment of the game. Complained to the pro shop, no actions taken. Denied when we told them we want to comeback. Paid premium dollars to get pressured for nothing and service with attitude. Nothing about the experience was pleasant friendly and polite as they say they are. read more

Very fun coarse. Well kept and reasonable if you are a NCGA or SCGA member. If not, not sure I would pay $350 (plus $25 cart fee) to play...at this price, you are paying for the zip code. Staff was VERY nice. VERY attentive. VERY accommodating and friendly. Challenging layout. I think only water on 1 hole (??). I loved the trees. My son loved the beach. Lost balls were not a problem...thankfully. I would definitely play again in the future. read more

As others have noted here, there is a real staff problem at Poppy Hills. Last week, we four NCGA members drove two hours to play our course. We booked the rounds months ago and received multiple confirmation emails. No mention that all the greens had been punched and heavily sanded a day or two before we arrived. The greens were absolutely unplayable. We complained to the desk staff who, frankly, couldn't give a damn. Aaron Hartesveldt, director of golf, was there but was dismissive and refused in emails to have us back to play the course we paid $500 to play. If you sell a product and then cannot deliver it, you are obligated to compensate your client. Simple, but not at Poppy Hills! I suggest NCGA members avoid their course until we are treated with the appropriate respect. read more

This was our course in three days in the area. I really liked it. I typically hit the ball straight but not super far. The layout of the course is wide fairways, no rough, then woods which typically allowed me to stay in the fairway. Not the magical ocean views of the other courses but equally beautiful. The course was in great shape. Staff was very friendly. We only had a twosome which was a nice change from the crowded long rounds at the other two courses. We played in less than 4 hours. The head of operations here was our caddie the day before on Pebble Beach. Was so happy to see Denzel again. He was awesome to work with. Best golf I played over the 3 rounds. read more

Ive played here many times and the course is always impeccable and fun to play. However the main guy at the clubhouse is rude and disrespectful. I believe his name is Denzel. Ive had several experiences checking in and his attitude is always the same. The last time I golfed I called the day before to see if my wife could ride along but not play. Whoever I talked to verified that and said there is a charge of I think $25..no big deal right.. When I went to check in I told them my wife would be joining me and Denzel made a huge deal about it and said you have to call before and make sure there will only be 2 carts per 4 some and tried to say she couldn't join me..My budy was also playing with me and he was walking so after arguing with Denzel he finally said my wife could ride for the fee but next time I need to call the day before.. WHICH I DID ! Even though he said there was no record of this. As we pulled up to the first Tee a employee pulled up and said my wife couldn't ride and that I have to go talk to Denzel at the clubhouse..what a joke! As I walked back and up the stairs to the clubhouse I looked at Denzel and said what now ? And he said she can ride...im pretty sure he was just being a jerk.. My advice is to play Bayonet for half the price and is great shape year round and the staff is always friendly. read more

Play here a few times a year. Drive from Oakland. Not going back. Got paired with two junior golfers July 21st sunday who were practicing the entire round for a tournament the following day. Hitting shots over our heads putting through our lines and just being jerks. Complained after our round and was basically told we were in charge of enforcing all the rules they were breaking and it was tough luck. No marshals. Didnt even offer us a burger or anything. Friend came up from LA we drove 2 hours and paid 130 bucks each. Tough luck buddy. read more

Great course, but as others have mentioned, the clubhouse manager brings this experience down. He is petty, and an absolute jerk to deal with. I've been invited to play here several times and refuse, because I can't support this behavior when there are other options nearby. Senior management/ownership should take note. This guy has a reputation that is talked about at all the courses in the region. He is solely damaging the customer experience. read more

The course location scenery staff facilities are top notch. The course is great my only issue are the greens are impossible to hold. They play like concrete. Hit what you think should be a great shot and the ball rolls right off the green even from green side bunkers. Hit what you think is a great shot ball shots clear off the green there is no holding these greens. Just my two cents. Otherwise fantastic place. read more

Came here on an atrocious day for traveling from the Bay Area to here - beginning of Memorial Day weekend in the afternoon where it took us an additional hour to get here. Originally I had planned to arrive here 45 min prior to the tee time and I ended up making it 10 min before. The front desk staff and starter were so gracious to try to find a way for my buddies to tee off at the same time while arriving late and we made it happen so big thank you to the staff for that. The course is absolutely beautiful and I shot my best round of my life here - breaking 90 for the first time ever. Throughout the round, you'll have plenty of pine trees surrounding you in such a peaceful forest. The condition of the course was fantastic with greens firm and fast, but not excessively so. This was my first time seeing these interesting bunkers surrounding the tee box on some holes which was very charming. There are also some long fairway bunkers that you definitely want to stay out of. Overall, with a controllable driver and a hot approach game, I gave myself lots of good looks throughout the round at this beautiful, yet not too difficult course. The key is to just stay out of the pine straw. The only star deduction are the marshals. I felt that hustling our group along may have been a bit excessive, considering that the problem was they let the group behind us tee off way too close to our time. We told the marshal ahead of time that if they want the group behind us to play through, feel free since we had 3 on carts and 1 walking. They didn't for a few holes and then when they finally did on the back 9, the marshal didn't seem to empathize with why I ran out to the fairway because I didn't realize the cart path blocked entry until the end of the hole (it's my first time here after all). He didn't even care that I asked my friend to drive my cart for me as I had run a bit forward while searching for my ball in the fairway because I didn't realize I had absolutely mashed my previous shot, making it go 20 yards further than it normally does. Seeing that there have been previous Yelp reviews calling out the marshals, I think that especially being a destination course, they could be a little more chill and move people along in a more respectful way instead of saying "I don't know what you were thinking running down." We were already hustling and not trying to take the course in the first 9 since we were delayed in consideration of the group behind us. Would I come back? Yes because I broke 90 and it's a peaceful course. Definitely has its faults especially when they should know a lot of people are traveling far to play here. But I'm hopeful that people will try to improve if they genuinely care. read more

Poppy Hills is by far the best bang for your buck. As a NCGA member you'll be able to enjoy Pebble Beach type golf without gnarly ocean wind or high tee time prices. The course is always in great condition and offers a challenging game. Anytime family or friends ask what place is best to golf in Monterey, I'm quick to recommend PH. On the 15th we had an early tee time. Due to the dewy conditions it was cart path only. Round went by smoothly and the tee time behind us was always a hole behind. On hole 8, a marshal named Larry, informed us that we were 15 minutes behind. We were glad to hurry up but it's safe to assume cart path only makes the round longer. We took his advice on being more efficient kindly and went on our way. Since it was 11am and haven't seen the cart attendant, we stopped for some refreshments and happened to stop next to Larry. He was quick to remind us we were on pace for a 5 hour round and stopping to get food "isn't a good idea and will likely result in us having to skip a hole". We were quick to appreciate his advice. We again stated if there was a cart attendant out we wouldn't have had to stop. Whole continuing to golf and never seeing the group behind us, our friend Larry saw us on hole 15 and said we are "slow" and would "supervise" us on the next couple of holes. Mind you we were already on track back to a 4:20 round. While I'll be the first to be irritated by slow golfers, I appreciate the marshal's job of helping. However, Larry seemed to enjoy his position of authority way more than helping customer experience. read more

Pay the extra and go play pebble, spy or Spanish or save the money and play B&B, PG, Monterey Pines etc. Any of those places will give you a better hospitality experience than this place. The customer service makes this place go from a 8/10 course to a 4/10. read more

Wow, took a day off work to come down here and the girlfriend was excited that she thought we were doing a little Monterey date day. Little did she know I had my clubs in the back and when I saw this beauty I had to stop. Staff was friendly and the course was immaculate. Hit a bucket of balls at the range to dial in my swing and decided I needed to play 18. This course is one of the highest quality I have seen a public course. Especially at this price point. It was raining we we had to take cover (only did so after making sure we were not blocking anyone behind) We were asked to picked up the pace after that. We did. We were a full par-4 ahead of the group behind Marshal swung by and told us we had to skip the next hole We complied, and we ran into the group in front of us before finishing It was a 4h50m round with the rain delay in the middle. No where close to be a "slow round" by any means We asked if we can play an extra hole to have a full 18-hole experience. Staff were hostile and almost yelled at us when we asked Not sure what went wrong. It's still a nice course and most of the staff members were super nice when we check-in. Man, it's been several years since I golfed this course! I remember it being tough. Well not today! I had a really good round at Poppy Hills. It was one of those days where everything just came together. I probably made 90-95% of my shots. It was just me of those days. The greens were difficult however, but that's Poppy Hills. I can understand why the pros no longer desires this course to be on the Pro Tour schedule. The greens are so tough. If you don't know where to land the ball, it's going to roll off. The course is in immaculate condition as always. I am so ecstatic about how well I played on a tough course, I don't care how I play the rest of the year. It was just one of those rounds that made golf really enjoyable and worth it on a pricey course! I'll be back to see if I can do it again! read more

Had a great time with three of my buddies. We played 3/17. The weather was cloudy, light wind, but not an issue. Was a bit chilly. I made the tee time a couple weeks in advance. They warned me that they just aerated the greens and wanted to make sure we were good with it. We then learned that they sanded the fairways too. We got out and didn't have any issues. As a matter of fact, kudos to the groundskeepers. They are pretty amazing. But I guess being part of the pebble beach group, you really should expect no less. Everything was good. Two of us walked and two rode. You better be an Ironman to walk this beast! I was tired at the end of that round. In all, we can't wait to get back when the greens heal up and it gets a little warmer. The NCGA rates can't be beat! read more

One of my favorite courses in Northern California. Very walkable..in great condition, the layout is fair, but challenging. When I first played it the 9's were reversed (my understanding is this is the original setup) and the current #9 is/was a great risk/reward when it was #18, still is as #9, but I liked it reversed. Played here recently for my birthday and was beyond expectations. Beautiful course with very friendly and professional staff. I'm a NCGA member so prices were reasonable for the quality of the course and experience, especially compared to the Bay Area. Tee boxes and fairways were well maintained, and the rough is designed in a way that is hard to play from but actually lowers the chance of losing your ball or having it bounce out of bounds. Greens were a bit slower than expected based on the practice area but very challenging regardless. The powered carts were great too which is an often neglected feature of the course. Several issues were that I felt the driving range was a bit small but it was nice hitting off grass. The practice greens had no holes which was strange. Pace of play was also a bit slow, a group in front of us played like they were in the PGA and we never saw a marshal come through after Hole 4. Nothing unreasonable though. One of the hardest courses I've played but I had a blast and plan to return despite the long drive. read more

We asked for an exception but we were given a typical corporate response and had to pay the 3rd golfers fee. We then proceeded to wait at least 15 minutes at each tee box so decided to play 9 holes. We asked for some kind of credit or to get reimbursed the 3rd golfers fee. Again, no kind of customer friendly response. Paid over $400 just to golf 9. Service and pace of play was absolutely terrible. I will never be coming back. read more

Loveys, did you have a nice day? I had a nice day. Being able to walk 18 at Poppy with one of my best buddies on a schoolday is one of the reasons I work for myself. Six pars or better, six bogeys, and six unmentionables. 65 degrees, a cloudless sky, and nobody pushing us or slowing us down. Poppy is one of the few greater Bay Area courses without houses. I don't hit houses anymore, so their absence doesn't matter with respect to the loss damage waiver. But it's nice to play sans dwellings. It feels like a walk in the woods. Except for the whole swinging sticks and chasing little white balls, that's kind of an unwildernessy aspect, but still. The course is not super challenging, a little narrow in places, not too long. The traps are placed in reasonable locations and there's not a ton of water. A forced carry here and there, but all in all, not a course that's designed to ruin your day. Poppy is a fine track. If you're an NCGA member it's actually cheaper than many in the area. And if you scored that Groupon, you got a membership and a round of golf for 85 skins. That's a heck of a deal. And since I bought said Groupon two months ago, it was a sunk cost. Today it felt like I got to play for free. I'd give five stars to a day half as nice as today. read more

Played the course over the weekend and it's in decent shape but have to complain about the Marshall. I didn't ask his name but he was a complete donkey! I've been playing golf for years and know the rules of golf and how much time is allowed to search for a ball. This idiot pulls up and tells me I have three minutes to search for the ball. I told him I just got to the spot. He then told me my drop was on the cart path which would have resulted in my ball rolling some 100 feet down the path. I told him that was a waste of time since we were not playing in a real NCGA tourney. I heard nothing but other complaints it tho guy when we finished. Just a word of advise to this donkey....learn to start treating paying customers with a little more courtesy and respect. If you don't like your job, go find another one! read more

Beautiful course and quiet challenging. Staff was a little pleasant.... But for the price you pay, we were very disappointed. We rented clubs, chart and played 18 holes, 2 people. There was no beverage chart the entire day! The men's clubs were sub-par. No golf towels to wipe off clubs. No tees; we had to ask for some. No gloves. Again, For the price paid, it should have been a first-class experience. read more

Course played long and fairly fast, and a good number of the greens weren't as fast as I thought they'd be (other pebble beach courses seem to be faster). Yesterday, I made my yearly trip to Poppy Hills GC. Had an overall solid round w/ 3 birdies on the back nine!!! The course was in excellent shape. Still a tough layout, tougher than before. First time I played since the renovation. I was expecting to see major changes. They are subtle but they are there--first, no rough. This means you ball rolls through what used to be tough, usually onto another fairway if you're lucky. I've played Pinehurst 2 and there the no rough zone normally stops the ball next to a little very hard brush type bush. Can be very penal. Yes, new Poppy has new, huge waste areas but they some seem very badly placed-- usually pretty close to the teeing area. Huh? Unless you're hitting from the Tips these won't come into play-- and well if you're hitting from the Tips you are unlikely to find yourself there. So on 9, the old 18, the waste area is in front of the green on the right and folks will definitely find that one. Some new holes, number 2 is much tougher than number 11 which it replaced. If you're not playing #3 tees or 4 and flag us way left and back...it's hard to get it close. Bunkers on entire right side. Cart Path only rule. Starting Sept 1 carts on path only. Yesterday had to be the hottest day ever at Poppy in high 90's. Yet yet my walk counter had me at 13,000 steps and I was riding. I won't ever come back if that remains policy. It had to have been heat stroke city for many people. Myself included. Switching 9's. What? So let's say there is a tourney hosted here- with current routing everyone is going to walk through and across the parking lot to get to the first hole? And 18 is visible from the clubhouse - it's now 9. The fairways and greens are in very good shape but everything was way over watered. Might have been because of the heat. The restaurant is a good place for a beer but when we were there around 3:00 there was only one bartender. We waited over 10minutes at the bar for a beer. Poor bartender was making 4-5 cocktails for a group and had no backup. Price is right if you are NCGA member. If not a member find one-- you'll pay about 75% less than non member price. read more

Prepare to feel like someone is reaching in your pocket. At every turn they will charge you for something. Guest riding with you. Yup. They won't allow another cart to ride along, even when your wife is pregnant. But they will certainly charge you for having a guest. Range balls with your round to warm up? Pay. So many other courses in the area, and it's sad that this is the NCGA headquarters. Vote with your feet and head somewhere else. read more
