There aren't very many video rental stores left in this country and it's a damn shame! It used to be a Friday afternoon tradition to go to the video store and pick out a handful of horror movies to last the weekend. Invite a bunch of friends over, make some popcorn and just enjoy the weekend. Although it is more convenient to just be able to turn on your television and stream something you would like to watch without having to leave your home, it is not the same experience. Kevin is an amazing human being for keeping this tradition alive. He has a diverse selection of hard to find films and he will search for and order in films that you are looking for. He does this for the love of the genre and has regular customers that look to him for the next great release. You can rent or buy from The Lobby. He also has an amazing collection of memorabilia and there is always something good playing on the TV in the room. There is a nice comfy couch if you want to hang out and watch for a while as well. It can be tricky to find; it is in the basement underneath the daycare. There is parking meters located in the front of the building, so yes, there is parking! Please bring cash, Kev doesn't have Interac. There is a bank located in the same block though so it's not so bad if you forget. There is a Facebook Page for The Lobby. This place is a staple of Whyte Ave. Though not the easiest place unless you know where to look, it is strangely hidden under a daycare. One of the master minds behind Dedfest, Kevin Martin has put his blood sweat and tears into making this basement full of obscure, rare, strange and awesome movies you can buy or rent. If you are buying, they don't always come cheap but that is because you are getting movies that get shipped to Kevin personally. Some movies are so rare he isn't always willing to part with them. Being a cenophile it is great to nerd out with another like minded and knowledgeable person. Do yourself a favor and show this place some love. *I* used to be the guy to call (in Edmonton) if you wanted movie info. No imdumb.com, just living in the Whyte Ave/Downtown area of Edmonton, taking film classes, etc. Kevin opened his store when I was working at [a video store that got sued for using the copyrighted phrase, "Two thumbs Up!"][Let's just call the store "Up"]. Anyway, if you want great movies, go to the Lobby. Kevin either a) will say, "Oh yeah - that should... be... here it is!" OR b) "That's actually rented right now. It's due back tomorrow, and I'll make sure it's held for you" OR c) [after checking his trusty computer] "I can order it in for you for [$X]" OR d) "I'm sorry - that movie's out of print." Yes, he'll be genuinely empathetic. Can you imagine a BustBlocker employee murdering a shite cuz of you not being able to get "La Haine"? I think not. Addressing other issues people brought up: 1) Hours of service. They are supposed to be static but Kevin is the owner, the ONLY employee, and 2) He doesn't make a penny from The Lobby. He has not one, but TWO late night jobs DJing at bars. It's been 14 years since he opened up The Lobby, and I've still had to wait on the staircase now and then. Go there around 1:00pm, he should be there. DON'T GO EARLIER - he turns into amazing, friendly, employee of the century *only* after he's had his coffee. 8) Last thing - people have been complaining about Kevin's "lack of electronic payment" issues. There's a Royal Bank next door to The Lobby; there's a cash machine in the Esso; if you're one of those people who carries cash that is fully accepted (LOL); and you can transfer funds if you have that app on your cell. read more

I love this little gem of a movie store! It's perfect for all those hard-to-find horrors, documentaries, cult classics, etc. It's been a few years since I was there, but I used to be in all the time when I lived off of Whyte. Incredibly helpful and friendly owner. I was in hospital for emergency surgery a few years ago and knew I wasn't going to get my movies back to him on time (for at least a week) and when I emailed him from my hospital bed to let him know, not only was he not concerned about the overdue fines, but was incredibly kind about my situation and told me to enjoy the movies while I recuperated. He treated me as more of a friend then a paying customer, which was really refreshing. When someone demonstrates such a good-will gesture, of course you want to go back and patronize their business! Friendly and very knowledgeable owner, great selection, and a great price. What more could you ask for? read more

Way way too many good films to choose from. With all the other movie sources out there, it really makes it hard to go with NETFLIX or AMAZON PRIME when you have a store like THE LOBBY in the world, and the owner has the nerve to bring in new movies every week. Enough already. I don't know how he can afford to stay in business; his prices are ridiculously low, and on top of that, he offers you a free rental if you rent 2 movies in the same day. I have dealt with my fair share of assholes in my time, but this guy is so nice and friendly, there were times when I had to leave because it was too much. If it wasn't for the fact that this guy singlehandedly works his ass off 7 days a week, come special holiday or event, just to provide this, last of its kind in Edmonton, service, I would have packed up my bags and moved to somewhere else where they do. Very passionate and friendly owner -- the problem is most of the time that you go there, during his posted business hours, the place is locked up and closed. I've wasted a few trips driving all the way down to Whyte and parking and finding the door locked. This has lead me to stop going there. Probably will just use Amazon from now on. read more
