The Local Blend might be the perfect coffee shop. The brewed coffee is great, but the French press is even better. Friends who like sugary drinks have good things to say about those, too. For food, the eggspresso (eggs and cheese on a croissant, with a side of fruit) is my favorite option, but I've liked everything I've tried. What puts the LB over the top, however, is its atmosphere, which cannot be beat. The walls are adorned with paintings and photographs from local artists, and food and drink are served on locally made hand-thrown pottery. Teeming with college students, the LB is always packed and filled with energy but is not too loud to get work done or have a good conversation. At night, there is usually local music, so that could be another plus if that is your thing. My absolute favorite espresso always. I had the pleasure of employment at the Local Blend for 7 years and can say firsthand that it's an excellent coffee shop and so much more. The baristas are friendly, skilled and know the menu well. The menu and bakery items are made with organic and natural ingredients and many options are offered as Gluten Free. As well as a spectrum of whole bean coffees from light roasts to dark, beer and wine are also available. Local art always adorns the walls and greeting cards are also available for purchase. Local honey is sold here as well as portioned to-go snacks like dark chocolate covered espresso beans or ginger pieces and raspberry yogurt pretzels. Wi-Fi is available and they subscribe to 3 different newspapers available for customers to enjoy. A cozy destination in the winter and a fun stop in the summer. read more

My husband and I went to the Local Blend on a Monday afternoon for lunch and it was pretty busy so we set our things down in the back of the coffee shop and began to read while we waited for the line to die down. About 5 minutes after sitting down, a barista approached us and sternly asked us to leave because we weren't purchasing anything from them and "we can't be there if we werent going to buy anything from them." She then walked away before we had an opportunity to explain ourselves. We are locals of Saint Joseph and regulars who buy from and visit this coffee shop often. We were embarrassed and upset by this confrontation and how quickly we were not welcomed because we were simply waiting. We will or be returning anytime soon. read more

Stopped by for coffee and cookies at 9:36 am, Saturday. I asked about the ingredients of the turtle cookies. The young woman server responded, "All of the ingredients?" Um, yes. That's how a person with food allergies determines if they should purchase the item. I needed to know about eggs, nuts. (Many items did have ingredients listed. Not the cookies.) She called on Stacie, who came out, glared at me and rattled off ingredients. No mention of nuts. I confirmed with the server, "So, no nuts." "No nuts." "What makes them turtle cookies," I asked. "Chocolate and caramel," she explained. Fine. I ordered, drank coffee, ate the cookie and discovered nuts. I spoke to Stacie. She told me, "Nuts? Turtle cookies? Yes nuts. Wouldn't you think turtle cookies would have nuts?" I asked for her name and the names of the front counter workers. She didn't respond. I asked again. Nothing. Finally she gave me the names saying, "They are great baristas!" I'm not questioning their ability to make coffee. When a customer with a life-threatening food allergy comes in and asks about ingredients, servers need to take care in responding accurately. If no one knows what's in an item (which is often the case) just say so. No cookie is worth risking anaphylactic shock. While the shop is stocked with plenty of specialty baked goods, the manager I dealt with was not "customer friendly" or "allergen friendly." Buyer beware. read more

This place speaks to my soul; each time I come into the cafe, I am immediately drawn into the relaxing yet cool environment, the food is to die for, and the coffee drinks are freshly made and the staff are always helpful and great! The first time I came here was because it was one of the few places in St. Joseph/St. Cloud area that offers organic food and ingredients, but after the first visit I realized that it was so much more than *just that*! I love the local and organic influence which makes me feel very connected to the area. Thank goodness for this little oasis in the chain restaurant desert of St Cloud. If you're in the mood for something to drink you'll be impressed with the selection of coffee, tea, cider, wine and other drinks. If you're looking for something more substantial you'll be pleased with their selection of sandwiches and other lunch items. The soups are made fresh and you can really tell! The prices are reasonable so you don't even have to feel guilty when you get something to go from the baked goods case. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and you might be tempted to sit for hours. That can lead to it being a little hard to find a seat at times but if you're able to find one you will not be disappointed with this fun, eclectic little place. read more

The Local Blend trades a lot on its set and setting, both of which are great, and I will stipulate they do coffee pretty well. But there are two main problems with the place, and for me they're deal killers. One is that you order at the counter and if it's at all busy you will wait, and possibly wait a long time. On a recent visit the line was out the door and I had to wait over fifteen minutes. The other problem is that the owner, reportedly some sort of music impresario, has apparently suffered substantial hearing loss, because the occasional live music is devastatingly loud. It doesn't matter the act, either--on that recent visit the three-piece folk group was ear-bleedingly loud. Thinking Casablanca for you and your date's romantic conversation? Think instead ZZ Top and shouting just to be heard. By the way, the 'toasted cheese' sandwich I paid $7.75 for arrived at our booth as a bit of cheese between two barely warm slices of bread. read more

Decent coffee shop. Food is made on site, they say. Only problem is that a muffin is 3 dollars. So is a scone. The scone I had was really doughy as if it wasn't baked well enough. Coffee is a bit expensive as well, but within the normal range. Music is a bit loud, but the crowd seemed younger. Wifi worked and was fast enough. On our way home from visiting Sibley State Park, we stopped at The Local Blend for a coffee. So many places no longer carry almond syrup, but they do here!
