I had such a great experience with Vickie for my haircut, conditioning, and highlights! My hair is really dark, which can make lightening tricky, but she knew exactly what to do. She helped me pick a highlight color that looks perfect with my natural hair and kept the base color untouched. Came to Loft for a haircut/deep conditioning/blowout with a Groupon. The salon is on Newbury Street in a good spot but because I went on a Friday afternoon it was crowded inside! I was seated promptly and taken to have my hair washed. I saw Hope who was very sweet and fun to chat with! I really only get a trim when I get a haircut so the cut itself was quick. Hope had another client after me so another gal came over the bow dry and straighten. I am unsure if the deep conditioning treatment included in my Groupon was part of the shampoo - I never heard anything about it. I visited The Loft last week for balayage, done by Karina and assisted by her manager, Nicole. Both girls are so sweet, professional and easy to work with. When I arrived, I filled out an intake form that was constructive, but still fun (ex: "What are three things you love about your hair?" in addition to questions about your hair care routine). I was offered a nice cup of (delicious!) coffee and was given a really comfortable robe to protect my clothes, and then a cape for the front. We had a brief consultation where I showed them some photos of what I had in mind. I told them I could be flexible in terms of the results, as my hair was fairly dark and I was going to be going lighter. They listened well and made sure the tones matched what I asked for. Nicole in particular asked a few questions that were essential for the results that I might not have thought to mention, and I really appreciated that. The salon itself is really cute and comfortable, and I was lucky enough to have a chair by the window, which brought in some nice natural light and a nice view. Karina is one of the most patient, pleasant people I've ever met and she is so nice to talk with. We had some great conversation as she carefully applied the color to my hair. Once she was done, she set a timer so that the color could process, offered to refill my coffee and brought me some water, and got me a few magazines. It was so nice to just sit and relax, and she still checked out me periodically during the processing time in case I needed anything. Once it was time to rinse, I received the most luxurious shampoo; the water was the perfect temperature, the shampoo smelled amazing and her pressure was perfect. She then applied a toner that sat for about five minutes and really helped to balance out all the work she just did. When she rinsed out the toner, it was just as relaxing and thorough. Finally, the styling! Nicole came back over to Karina's chair and they tag-teamed to blow dry my hair, which was cute to watch, more efficient and made me feel like a celebrity. Afterwards, Karina added some loose curls to my hair with a flat iron, and then showed me the results, which were fantastic! For the grand finale, we stepped over to another part of the salon to take some photos against their unofficial "selfie wall" with a professional light kit. It made for a great backdrop and the photo I shared on my Instagram page ended up being one of my most liked photos. I left with a smile, great hair and gave Karina a good tip. I came here last Friday! Nicole attended me and she was an angel to the rescue! The staff in this salon are all great and detailed to their work. Michael the owner is a total sweetheart and made me feel very welcomed. The day prior to coming here, I had a balayage done at a different hair salon that came out a bit ratchet The process was done but it was not blended and glazed well. I was not satisfied and really needed a color stylist to help me out with the solution to this dire matter. I told Nicole my situation and she fixed it! Extremely helpful and kind! When I was so tired of brown-black hair I found The Loft salon. I needed to wait for one and half week before the earliest appointment I could get (OMG they are really busy and popular). I had to say it all worth!! Rachel was my stylist and all the staffs I met over there are so nice! The salon should be closed at 19:00, but I stayed there until 20:30 since coloring took long time and Girls did everything patiently without any rush. Sam gets it and cuts and colors my hair for what I want every time. I've been seeing her for 6 years and have never had a bad cut. We've gone super short as a dark brunette, perfect summer highlights with warm mid and low lights, and she's helped me grow it out long and blonde for my sister's wedding and everything in between. This place was a huge waste of my time. I used a Groupon that Was for a full foil cut and style. She spent 2 hours toning my hair. Split it into random pieces and slapped on toner. She was going for a balayage that just came out like I had grown out sun damaged hair. TRASH. Not ONE single foil hit my head. I spent 4 hours to come out looking the exact same, but 1/2 inch less. I asked for all dead ends to be cut off and she responded that she is not "scissor happy" so I still am rocking my dead ends. I can't even get my money back. I am generally pretty loyal to my stylist Sally at g20 for highlights and haircuts. I go to Heidi at Salon 2 for single process color. Anyways, I too purchased the deal for the Loft. I had Diane. I wanted to go red. It came out well. I was excited about it. She was super nice, and offered to redo the glaze for me in two weeks as red fades fast. I went back, and she did it for free! She even styled my hair for free! I did not think that the highlight placement was as good as what I'd received in the past, but I knew she was a novice. Enjoying how nice she and the salon were thus far, I made a follow up appointment when the red was fading out to go back to brown with a few highlights. Long story short-- I ended up with gray highlights. When I said: "Don't my highlights look gray? Did you use ash?" She replied that she'd used mostly neutral and it looked fine to her. Assuming it was just the light, I walked out. Once out, I realized, "Holy crap! So this is what I'll look like at 45? At least I'll still be sexy." Regardless of that small consolation, I really did not want gray hair yet. So, I debated: Do I call back and let her have another crack at it? Or do I go back to my old salon? I went back to my old salon... I didn't want my hair to undergo anymore damage that it already had or take any chances other than the ones I already did. read more

The last time I went for my hair appointment was my last visit to the Loft. My stylist was running almost 30 minutes late, which they failed to mention when I called asking where to park nearby. They weren't able to give me the cross streets of the nearest lot so I finally found it and then rushed over only to find I had plenty of time. Which is totally OK, I run late a lot too, but they could said something and have some idea of parking nearby. I requested to add a gloss when I finally met with my stylist. She wasn't sure she'd have time but I said I could do without a blow dry which would be the same time. Instead she mixed it with a toner that was way too dark and so had to take it off after like 5 minutes. Then she dried and curled my hair. So really there was time for a gloss but instead I ended up with dark blond hair which I did not ask for after sitting there for three hours. They seem to overbook the stylists because she had to keep leaving me to check on the girl's hair she was highlighting right before me. When trying to book another appointment I couldn't get one with her for months because they suggest clients book three appointments at a time. I've never had that issue at any other salon and decided I didn't love the place anyway since the salon felt cramped instead of fabulous. After a few weeks of washing out the toner, my color was back to how I liked it. But when I get my hair done I like to walk out of the salon loving the color, so I've moved on. read more

I'm new to this salon, my first visit was in April and I just had my second appointment today (June). I'm not the biggest lover of change but it needed to happen, and I'm glad I did and I'm glad I found this salon. First, the actual salon - it's not huge but it's a good size. It's on the second floor, so there are some stairs but that doesn't bother me at all. Both times I've been there it's clean, and more importantly the bathroom is clean. The waiting area is by a window area so it's really pretty to look out to Newbury St. I dig it... My stylist - Erika, she made me feel so comfortable the first visit that it was obvious I had to rebook with her. I wanted to go from a light brown to blonde.. and it came out great! She did Balayage on me and I love it. Her hair cut is amazing and she's fast! I'm not at the salon all day long which is awesome. I've recommended her to two friends already. It is always unpleasant to book an appointment in a great salon, famous for their service and once you get there to get very poor experience and treatment. I bought a buywithme for single process color because my friend stylist who usually does my hair is away for a month and I needed a color badly (I'm a brunette and whenever the brown gets lighter...I am left with a copperish tint). She recommended the salon and a stylist so I called to book an appointment but she was on maternity leave so the receptionist recommended Diana. I went at the Loft Salon on my day off, hoping for some pampering and to enjoy myself on my girly afternoon. Instead I got an upset stylist, who did not explain anything she was planning on doing. She left me sitting at the sink most of the time while doing a color and not for nothing but that is the least comfortable place a person would like to sit at...I have never had such experience before. When washing my hair after the color...no care, no massage, not even a word...I was suppose to get a conditioning treatment, got some sort of oil in my hair that stayed in for only 1 minute. It seemed that she was annoyed with my presence and even when styling my hair...she did a half job, while she rushed me out. The only good thing was that the color came out really good...she definitely is an Expert for color! I am quite big on recommending salons and people, after experiencing something good, but there is nothing to recommend... I was highly disappointed! read more

Disappointing experience despite all the rave reviews. I asked the colorist for something very subtle and showed her pictures of dark brown hair with subtle and warm ombre highlights. I went home with bold streaks of ashy blond highlights on the top layer of my dark black hair. She didn't listen, and it showed. The worst part is that she looked positively bored the entire time she was coloring my hair. I ended up fixing my color at Trephin, and I highly recommend going there instead, they saved my hair and I may have cried a little. read more

Note: This is a review for the facialist and the front desk only. I participated in a green program they did last spring, where if you brought in a certain number of empty plastic bottles, you got a free mani/pedi. Pretty cool, right? I called while I was on my way over, and they said they were "out" of those services, but they could offer me a facial! YAY! I was psyched. I showed up & got my "certificate" a business card signed by the front desk girl. I made my appt. and arrived on the day of the service. Well, the girl at the front desk (a number of them appear to be in high school) didn't offer to take my coat so I figured there was a coat rack somewhere. Nope. She did get me some boiling green tea, and I sat on a window seat watching women get their hair done, for about 15 minutes. Then the front desk girl came over and told me that the girl (yeah, she's a girl, she's in her early 20s) would be late, because she's stuck in traffic. Now, I'm not on time much for things myself, but this is the very first time in my half a lifetime spa-going career that I've been told my facialist would be late, because she wasn't even in the city. Wow. So when Ashley finally showed up, it was a half hour past the appt. time. At least she apologized. I also then found out that I'd be getting a mini-facial, about 20-25 minutes. I would have liked to have known this before-hand, as no one had mentioned this before. The facial itself wasn't relaxing, (I get to hear her stepping on her tin trash can, etc.) and I could tell she was inexperienced. Never again. By the time I made it to Dyan's chair I was heading to a 1 process blonde, which in the winter in Boston I was starting to hate. After a consultation we decided to add some depth and not tone it. Diane did my hair and went darker than I had anticipated but used the perfect shades of brunette and highlights to work with my complexion. The atmosphere was relaxing and there was plenty of coffee, cookies, and halloween candy to go around - and the music was a break from the typical pop/loud club music and had a ton of early to late 90s acoustic... for some reason I actually liked this. Having had a whole bunch of groupons for salon hair cuts, and my most recent haircut being nothing less than horrifying, I was a little apprehensive about redeeming my groupon at The Loft especially when it had 3 stars from 23 reviews. But I did my research anyway and I must say I got lucky this time! I got Manuela as my stylist and she was great. Impression-wise, she was soft-spoken, not pushy and took time to understand what I wanted before we started (bob, with longer layers in front). Technique-wise, you also don't have to be a stylist to know that she knows her stuff. None of those lousy razor-cuts that end in feathery craziness! She took time to shape the layers accordingly and had the meticulousness of a surgeon. Even though I got my haircut the day before, I'm pretty sure it will grow out nicely. Her services are $65/cut and My coupon was $30 (for $70) + I tipped $20 and it was so worth it. As I still have remaining groupons for haircuts, I can't be back so soon but in my downtime, go for Manuela! She's a solid choice and I highly recommend her! read more

There is a reason Val got the 2009 Best of Boston: mani/pedi award! Not only is Val a complete sweetheart, but she also gives a mean mani/pedi. I don't think my hands and feet have ever looked so good! Although the nail services at the Loft are a little on the expensive side, they're definitely worth splurging on if you have a special event coming up or just want to be pampered. Plus, the best thing about this place is that Val is the only nail technician so the salon doesn't smell like chemicals and you get great 1-on-1 attention from one of the sassiest ladies in Boston. I went here with a coupon from getsugar.com and had a cut and color with Mari Jo. She was absolutely fantastic! I had been bouncing from place to place for a few months but now I feel like my hair has found a home. I loved the cut: my standard long blond hair with bangs but with some added angles and light face-framing layers that work really well with my hair type and face shape. The color is literally perfect -- exactly what I wanted, which is not always easy since I am not great at describing my ideal look. She really "got it." The place itself is on the fourth floor. My advice: take the elevator. There is some sort of modeling/talent agency below that apparently didnt get the memo to keep their stage parents off the stairs so people can get by. It's a bit small but cozy loft space, with a nice little bay window area to relax and read magazines with you wait. They have coffee and water for you as well, which is always nice. read more

I got a foil & cut I had a wedding that day so she made sure when I stepped out of her chair I looked great. I will definitely go back to Manuela. The prices were reasonale in comparison to other salons on newbury street. The staff was great. I was running out of time on my meter & Manuela made sure one of the assistants got my keys to purchase more time on meter. The assistant was more than willing to help. I love this place. I bought a buywithme.com coupon for The Loft. As a recent transplant to the city, I needed a hair cut, and had not found a stylist. I have extremely long hair (hit at my tailbone) and it is not everyone that can do a good job, being that it is fairly unusual. I called and was reassured that their senior stylist could accommodate me. I also got an appointment that day, which is amazing, my stylist in CT booked out a week + in advance. The salon was very nice, and the staff welcoming. I appreciated the offer of coffee/water and a robe sort of thing to keep my clothes dry. I was early for my appointment, but she took me immediately nonetheless. We talked about my hair, and agreed to take 6 inches off, and she stuck to it, which, for anyone with long hair, is very important! She also took the extra time to blow out and style my hair, at no additional cost. I walked out feeling very very beautiful! As an important side note however, they are not set up to put tips on credit cards, which I found very surprising and because I, like many people, do not carry cash, I rushed all over Newbury street trying to find an ATM, to no avail. I will stop by with a tip tomorrow as I have to go back to Newbury for another appointment! I'd been seeing a colorist at Escape Aveda salon, in the Pru, since moving to Cambridge nine months before; and noticed that my hair was getting darker and darker; unnaturally dark, so much so that the ends had a weird purple cast at the ends. And also that my hair, which is curly, was getting drier and drier, frizzier and frizzier. I asked my stylist--whose a friend of our family, so I felt a bit locked in to her (and really liked her, personally)--to go lighter and she said, "Sure!" But I kept getting darker. So, finally, I decided to go see Michael Albor, in part because he's constantly rated the best colorist in Boston for brunettes, and in part because a friend of mine, who works in fashion, told me he was great and many of her stylist friends see him. He was super-lovely, from the start, and actually came in early on a Saturday to meet me--as he suspected it might be a big job. It was, indeed, a big job. He appears to know everything about color: the chemistry of it, the differences between color lines, the ways in which different colors effect different types of hair. And he explained that Aveda color is terrible for curly hair, that it dries it out, and overly saturates the hair, which is why my hair kept getting darker and darker. That first day, I was at the salon for something like four or five hours. He removed tons of color from my hair, added highlights, glossed, toned, gave me some sort of ultra-deep conditioning treatment, and got my hair closer to it's normal medium-ish brown color. He's a really, really nice guy, and fun to talk to, and the others at the salon seem nice, too. I saw some really fantastic color jobs (one blonde, in particular) being done, and also some great blow-outs. When it came time to style my hair, though, he explained that I needed a product with really strong hold, like a gel or "elixir," and he proceeded to run some sticky stuff through my hair and...make me look like an extra from an Eighties teen movie. No exaggeration. I left with completely frizzed out, sticky, crunchy, horror show hair. I tried not to freak out, but--no lie--the woman at the front desk could not even meet my eye; that's how bad it was. As it happened, I was meeting my husband, my kids, and my in-laws at the science museum, and then for dinner. On my way there, I stopped for coffee, went into the bathroom to take another look at my hair and it was even more awful than I thought. I grabbed a bunch of bobby pins and stuck it up into a bun, but it STILL looked awful. A week-plus later, I went back for him to further fine tune things, and this time I asked if he could blow it out after coloring it. He did indeed make the color better and the blow out was okay (an assistant did it; not him). Very, very ultra-straight and conservative. So, despite Michael's doing a pretty great job at making my hair normal again, I've not been back. Why? It's strange. Sometimes a salon is just not for you. For me, well, I love that hour or two at the salon each month, when I get to sit and read magazines, and relax. And The Loft is just not conducive to that sort of experience. It's very, very loud and hectic, with Michael and the other stylists loudly gossiping; and Michael is the sort stylist who talks nonstop. I think I just want a little more quiet, a little more luxury. Maybe I'm used to New York salons, which have a very different feel? But also I like to leave a salon feeling like I look fantastic and that just wasn't the case here. Both times, I left wanting to go home and wash my hair to make it look better. So, in short: A good place for color correction. A good place, I think, for color in general. Maybe not the greatest place for curly hair? I can't say enough great things about my experience! I emailed to make an appointment and was able to get one quickly at a time that worked for me. I got there 15 minutes early and was taken immediately. Cara was my stylist and she was incredibly helpful in assisting me in deciding on a color and she is a real pro! The salon is esthetically pleasing, lots of natural light and mirrors and they really maximize the space well. I was asked constantly if I wanted water, coffee or tea. I originally decided to go to this salon about two years ago because I noticed that it was selected as the "Best of Boston" for brunette hair color and I was brunette at the time. My first appointment at the salon was with Manuela and I have been with her ever since. She did a beautiful job with my brunette hair and successfully transitioned me to blonde about a year ago -- she has a truly incredibly eye for color. I'm really picky about color and the shade of blonde she selected for me is perfect -- and since it's the closest any stylist has gotten me to my natural hair color, it's really easy to maintain. Additionally, I get tons of compliments on my hair, which I never really have before. Manuela's prices recently went up, but I still think that, considering it's a Newbury Street salon, they're pretty reasonable. I paid the same or more when I lived in smaller markets (like Orlando), so for a salon on Newbury Street in Boston, I can't complain. read more
