It's located right down the street from Northwestern University's football stadium (whatever the heck they're naming it). This is a nice hidden gem in Evanston. Not located downtown, it may have a chance to stick around a while. As Jane V. noted in her review, you are greeted by a delicious smoky smell when you enter the restaurant. It was an inviting smell (at least for me), others in our group thought we were walking into a barbecue joint and were less than thrilled, but the menu put them at ease as it has a lot of options. There were five of us and one couple decided to share a couple appetizers as their entrees. They ordered the Cauliflower Buffalo Bites, and the Macho Nacho. They were huge portions easily enough for us all to share. However, my wife and I don't see eye-to-eye with our eating habits (she is mostly vegetarian and I'm a card-carrying carnivore), so she was not about to share the smoky wings and cheesy tots with me. I opted for the Chicken Vesuvio entree, and she and our other friend both ordered the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese. I would say most the sandwiches looked good (no portobello for me, thanks). I would say though, the desserts are pretty generic, so we opted out, but their is a door inside the restaurant to the donut shop next door (which was closed), but I wanted to try that place, so I'll have to make another trek out there for them and review them later. I'm amazed that the donut shop, DB3 Donuts, does not appear on their menu at all, despite having a connecting door from one establishment to the other, but alas, I've heard their apple crisp and brownie are good, but neither were too appealing that night. All meals were delicious and I definitely need to go back and try other dishes. And may DB3, if they are open. Give this place some love as it is a nice gem in Evanston.

So much so that I ordered the smoked Sampler plate, and was I glad I did. I started off with their Top O' The Morning special Saint Patrick's cocktail (Titos, Curacao, and orange juice shaken and poured over ice). I really loved this drink. My hubby had a Margarita that was just delightful. Our appetizers were: Angry Shrimp (really delicious) shrimp with a spicy tomato garlic sauce. Served over polenta cake. Ahi Tuna Wanton (mango jicama salsa, avocado, and teriyaki sauce) This should be their signature appetizer).The presentation is impeccable. It appealed to our eyes before the 1st bite. And,the first bite, as well as the rest, was wonderful. We would gladly return here just for this. Our entrees were: Grilled Salmon with corn risotto, grilled asparagus, smoked tomato aioli. The salmon was well cooked to medium, not too dry, and not too rare. The plate was well balanced and everything was very tasty. Smoked Sampler My favorite! Rib tips, brisket, pulled pork, Texas toast, cole slaw. For dessert: Chocolate Brownie Apple Crisp Both were so good that we did not want to share! The smoked meats were flavorful, tender, and had a good slow-cooked taste. The brisket, pulled pork, rib tips, and sausage all brought something different, and the variety made the meal feel like a true sampler experience. The sides were just as good. The mac and cheese, red beans and rice, collard greens, apple slaw, and cornbread all had that comforting soul food feel and paired really well with the BBQ. Overall, Soul & Smoke delivered on both the smoke and the soul. Great flavor, generous portions, and a satisfying meal from start to finish. There were four workers on their staff, behind the bar. They did not seem to be doing much (of anything). I had to personally ask for my water refill, each and every time. The service is so completely slow and incompetent, I had to cancel an order and leave--it took so long, and I was having diabetes problems--still, however, for the price they try to charge for their drinks on tap, and the price they try to charge for their overrated (at best) food; the "bar talent" and/or professionalism/efficiency of their staff, from top to bottom--is considerably lacking. My experience at Bluestone is worse, Worse, WORSE--each and every following time I make the (poor) decision to go. I really wish Central and Prairie had other bars, with better culture, better professionals, and better "bar talent"--because a place like Bluestone would be GONE in FIVE MONTHS. As I checked out today, one of the bartenders, a young African-American male--made it a point--to tell me "he was giving me a great deal on my tab; half price off my second beer." There is a problem, though--I only ordered, and drank, one beer. He was clearly embarrassed (as he should be), when I explained this to him, and then he 1)stared me down, and 2) threatened me. That is a walking definition of U N P R O F E S S I O N A L. I will happily drive across the North Shore--than walk 200 yards to Bluestone. The food is decent. The beer on tap is solid...but the Glaring, overall lack of Bar Talent, along with the piss-poor and UNPROFESSIONAL service--I just...I can't...I can not, in good conscience--bring myself to ever go back there, again. I am 46 years old, and have worked in the restaurant/bar industry for 30 of them... It is "Amateur Hour" at Bluestone, every moment of every day. They do not even look at you (customers). Totally unaware, spaced-out, not-at-all focused...Not just (anybody) can be a decent bartender--it kind of helps to be somewhat "sharp", somewhat "alert", be somewhat cordial, friendly, or amiable...Nope! NONE of that, at Bluestone. What a waste--of perfectly-good real estate--in an otherwise beautiful part of Evanston. Bluestone is a STAIN on the Community.

Can't say it's bad, but seems to be missing some of that savory sauce I've had in other jianbings. They are made fresh to order and even with the gloves, still very hot in the hands. It was empty when I went, presumably a take out spot. No washrooms.

CLUELESS ABOUT FOOD ALLERGIES / INTOLERANCES, PLUS A PRIVACY-FREE MEN'S ROOM Our party of three went to Lucky Platter this Sunday morning for breakfast. I have gluten and dairy intolerance, something hardly unheard of in chi-chi, trendy, vegan-obsessed Evanston. As I usually do with restaurants, including this one to which I've been going for decades off and on, I checked out their menu ahead of time to be sure that there was something I could order that at least *seemed* not to have gluten or dairy in it. I enthusiastically chose the "steel-cut oatmeal" and looked forward to it. When I asked the waitress, however, whether there was any dairy in the oatmeal, she said that "yes, they always cook it with some milk". I therefore asked her if they could cook mine without milk, and I was told that no, that was not possible. Strike one. At that point, I had to choose another dish. I landed on the potatoes, and asked about their ingredients as well. I was informed that the potatoes also have dairy blended in, in the form of "cheddar flakes". I asked whether their kitchen had the capacity / skill to make potatoes without "cheddar flakes", and I was again told that no, it was not possible. I was assured that there wasn't "too much" cheddar in the potatoes, and being out of any other option at that point (it is a gluten- and dairy-saturated menu), I had to settle for the potatoes if I wanted to eat anything other than a fruit cup or meat (I had an order of bacon). Strike two. I asked to speak to the manager in order to voice my hope that they would soon enter the 21st Century and have at least a few options for the gluten and dairy intolerant. I was told that the manager would come to our table in a few minutes. After a full hour, and after a second request to see the manager, he still had not dropped by our table. Finally, our waitress leveled with me and told me that he was too busy to stop at our table. Strike three. Then came my need to use the men's room as we were leaving. This is a one-person bathroom with a toilet that has no stall enclosure around it, so a locked door is a must. However, not only did the door NOT lock, it did not even close into the door frame, being so warped that it could not be closed! In other words, at its most fully closable position, the door was cracked open an inch or so, through which anyone could see anything from outside. I complained about this to one of the staff and I got a curt "we know" as he rushed past. I was coming to the Lucky Platter even before it was the Lucky Platter, back when the same location housed an Indian-like restaurant in the 80's. Even then, they had vegan and food intolerance-friendly menu offerings. Lucky Platter needs to become aware that it is in Evanston and not in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and start to act as if it is a 21st Century urban restaurant, something that has yet to happen. Even Dave's Italian Kitchen in Evanston, a retro Italian food stalwart, has some gluten-free and dairy-free options. For me this was a poor experience, and I hope not to return any time soon to bother them with my pesky dietary needs. read more

The Lucky Platter is a crappy "restaurant" run by hippies and morons. Their motto seems to be, "Let's do JUST enough to technically fit the definition of restaurant, and not a smidge more!" My wife and I live right up the street from the Lucky Platter. We end up there due to convenience more often than I'd like, and each time I marvel about the crappy indifferent service, and the overpriced food. Last night, though, will be the last time I go to the Lucky Platter. I've finally found an excuse to write them off for good. With my wife at work late, I promised my 2-year old I'd take her to the ice cream shop after dinner. There's a great little ice cream shop right up the street that has become one of our favorite places to go... but they keep strange hours, and even at 6:30pm on a weeknight we found it closed. Once you tease my little girl with ice cream, you'd best cough up the ice cream, or you'll face her wrath for the rest of the night. I knew we could get a scoop next door at the Lucky Platter, so we headed there. When the host greeted us, I told him all we'd be having was a small scoop of ice cream for the little girl. He took us to a booth and sat us down. A few minutes later, our big angry waiter stopped by with menus. I stopped him and said, "we don't need menus, we're just here for a scoop of ice cream for the little girl." "That's all you're having?" he asked gruffly. "Yup," I said. He threw the menus aside, and marched back to the kitchen, muttering something about "mutter mutter mutter ice cream store next door, mutter mutter mutter boo hoo wah wah wah." As much as I wanted to deliver on my ice cream promise, I didn't want to eat at a place where the staff would treat us with such disdain. I marched to the kitchen where I met the host, and told him he should tell his waiter buddy to relax.... that I knew there was an ice cream store next door, but it happened to be closed, so we came here. I made it very clear that we would not make this mistake again. Lucky Platter - where it's a crime to order ice cream for the world's cutest little girl. Hopefully one day the Lucky Platter will be taken over by new management, who will replace the angry and lazy atmosphere with one befitting of an actual restaurant. Until that day, we'll be getting our ice cream (and our food) from more friendly establishments. read more

"Evanstonian" is a good way to describe both cuisine and the place; except unlike viva le crepe or clarke's, lucky platter manages to escape the smorgosphere of northwestern univ student culture and foot traffic, while still providing a good and reasonably cheap brunch menu. For most customers, this should be considered a big positive. The decor and lighting was very "upscale hippy"; ... maybe that's de rigeur these days, atleast in Evanston. Notably, the chairs had some weight to them, the table cloths seemed crisp and clean. I think the silverware was somewhat suspect, though I failed to inspect my utensils carefully, and water refill was slightly slow. As for the general milieu, I would have felt as comfortable wearing sandals and a hemp shirt as I did the tee-shirt and shorts I had tossed on. The crowd included young couples, a few kids, some folks from the greatest generation, and a few alternative lifestyle types. Well-lit, reasonably quiet, yet upbeat, type of place. As for the menu, I was pretty pumped to see Omelette #1, which with its avocado, feta cheese, and artichoke - the triple threat, basically made the decision automatic. I ordered that, along with some tap water ... as John B. documents in great detail in his review, this did not turn out well. I found myself with the "Girlfriend's Omelette" - turkey, feta, and green onions; which, while tasty, still left me staring longingly at my original order which had been mistakenly placed at the other end of the table. My hesitation in not demanding a reorder, was probably an emasculating sign that I deserved the dish I got. We had a drawn out meal and some good conversation. To the restaurants' credit, I never felt as if we were being rushed to leave or pay. ... and that was how the morning ended; I left reasonably satisfied, but feeling less of a man. The food is honestly far below average considering how much you are paying and how little you get. Also, the staff are stressed and a bit rude. My girlfriend didn't even want me to leave a tip, and she usually leaves 25-30%. First time and last time I ever heard her say that. $6.50+ for a side of fries should tell you everything you'd ever need to know about this dying joint that runs off old-Evanston nostalgia. If 4 people want fries with their meal you'd already be down almost $30+ with tax and tip. For freezer fries! There are plenty of restaurants in Evanston to support, this is NOT one of them. You might as well just go to Wild Fork right across the street and buy some of their microwaveables, which are unironically far better than anything LP makes (we bought the beef stew one night since it was mostly healthy). read more

If you've ever walked down Main St. regularly and never eaten at The Lucky Platter, all the name means to you is ten feet of windows lined with huge planters at the corner of an alley. But it is SO MUCH MORE. Make it a point to visit this place for breakfast/brunch/dinner! I have to say that I've only tried their benedict fidel and crab cakes, which came with an apricot cheese flaky, and their gazpacho but this single experience redefined what breakfast food has always been to me. I was never a breakfast food person, but if it means food like the dishes I had at The Lucky Platter I definitely now am. I like their cutesy decorations too. And they make their hollandaise in house and it's delicious. read more

This is one of my daughter's favorite restaurants - and we don't mind accommodating her at all when she picks it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Lucky Platter is an Evanston institution that caters to us healthy (but not at the cost of taste) eaters. The food is eclectic with vegetarian options aplenty. Our breakfast favorites: vegetarian benedict, oatmeal (get it with the apple compote), any scramble, apricot flaky, huevos rancheros, blueberry pancakes. Lunch/dinner favorites: pizza, sweet potato fries, mac-n-cheese (kid picks), tandoori chicken salad The food is always fresh, always good and you can grab a Jolly Rancher on the way out - what more do you want? read more

In general I consider myself a fan of the food that the Lucky Platter puts out; the items on their menu are electic, fun & overall pretty good. I enjoy the variety of food items. The quality is in need of improvement and the food is pricey, in some instances overpriced. Specifically the service staff is at the weak to poor level, although we do have a favorite waitress, but other than her service - it is hit or miss. Also, the coffee is weak and needs to be changed out to a new roasting company, it simply is not up to par in any way shape or form. I like the menu options and LOVE the pumpkin soup and cornbread. The food is ok, not great. The service is lacking though. You really have to flag someone down to get a coffee refill or a straw. The waitstaff always seems really rushed and often walk away before getting our full order. Maybe they need to have more staff working on certain shifts. My biggest complaint about this restaurant is that it is really dirty! I own a restaurant and would never allow the things I have seen here. Unfortunately I don't think I can get passed the filth to ever return, it hasn't gotten any better, only worse. read more

Their back kitchen area is not sanitary. They sometimes dump their mop buckets down the the residential back entrance ramp of the building instead of in a sink. I've smelled rotten foods quite a few times coming from the kitchen. The manager is very rude as well. This place used to be half decent back in the day. They also post political agendas on their windows. Yeah, I really want to think about politics when I am eating a chicken sandwich during the 1 hour of my life I have off from work a day. The first time my wife introduced me to The Lucky Platter, my initial reaction was amused disbelief at the surrounding decor .Upon recommendation from my wife, I ordered their Portobello Mushroom sandwich. This was also my first experience ordering a vegetarian dish. I've got to say, I was impressed. The sandwich was so hearty, I didn't miss the meat. Having been at the "Lucky Platter" and lived upstairs I can tell you from first hand experience this is one of the FILTHIEST kitchens have ever been in. The roaches and horrific smells the come from the back of that kitchen are sickening. The place is INFESTED with roaches and as a result I have gotten some in my apartment. Neither of the owners seem to care about the health standards of the restaurant and im surprised no one has gotten sick yet. The food that comes out of that hell hole is soggy and old. I've eaten here on a number of occasions, and while the food is often very good, the wait staff and service leaves much to be desired. I usually am dining alone and a single top gets treated like a step-child. If you're not a friend of the hostess or wait staff, or recognized as a 'regular' you're treated worse than a step-child. I'm probably eating there again this morning because it's around the corner from where I get my car serviced, but this may be the last time if I don't notice a difference in the service. read more

I tried this place out with a few sorority sisters on Saturday (I KNOW... I was in a sorority). So the place was full, and really kitchy, but the food was amazing. I had the tuscan omelet with the apricot flakey (SO GOOD)... and the service was great contrary to what others have said. Really enjoyable and I will be back! read more

Lucky me! I live nearby and walk over. Never had a bad meal in15 years. Montana hash for breakfast, tandoori chicken salad or sandwich for lunch, pot roast and crunchy broccoli for dinner--all good. Reasonably priced, interesting artwork & found art mobiles. Once a week at least for me. read more

I love this place for breakfast and lunch! They have something for all tastes and even serve cocktails! The Huevos Rancheros are a favorite, as well as Eggs Florentine. The Chicken Pot pie was perfect for a winter lunch and feta cheese gave a distinctive taste. read more

It has beautiful art works including two originals by Lynda Barry. Art works is really fun especially the lobster boy. Food is good. Service is very slow. I recommend but go there when you have time. read more

I used to eat at the LP when it was downtown. If its anything like that one the sweet potatoe fries and salads are awesome......so sad it closed! Please come back closer to the city!! read more

Sher-Main Grill feels like that go-to local diner when you are hungry and just want to sit down, enjoy a good meal, and leave satisfied. I got a chicken sandwich (but without whatever their signature spicy ... addition? topping? seasoning? is) and a strawberry boba. My partner got a ghost burger, loaded fries, and a pina colada boba. We grabbed a table to wait and the boba came out first. These are super delicious, I've never ordered a boba anywhere else and had it come out like these, but they are like blended and creamy and also some of the best "popping" or "tapioca" additions/mix ins that I've ever had. I went back the next day to get another strawberry boba it was so delicious. The food here is over the top good. The sandwiches and fries come out loaded and messy and in huge portions. The chicken sandwich is so moist and tender, they are definitely frying chicken right here. The house sauce is tasty, flavorful and not too spicy. Neither of us were able to finish our orders here (you really get your money's worth!) but we left stuffed to the brim. When you walk in you can tell it's a new restaurant, the sleek clean simple and modern design. What threw me off was not having someone there for a bit but then I realized there's a bell to ring for someone to come out. They are a halal restaurant which is so great to know and have. They have some great food specials. We got the blended Thai tea and it was decent, not too sweet. Overall a good experience, looking forward to coming back to trying other things on the menu.

This is located in a not as busy part of town. A place that has the menu up on the walls and there's a lot of things listed. They amazingly have both burgers and tacos. It's about $12 for the Taco Dinner. This comes with beans and rice. You choose what kind of tacos, and we chose the Veggie Tacos. Basic looking ones to be honest. These had cilantro, onions, and peppers. Has to be one of the best examples of a restaurant that looks like crap but the food is actually good. It's okay but could use a remodel. This is located up the street from the Central Street Metra station.
