Man the lumberjack has really lost its luster. My partner and I came here for some nostalgia and it sure isn't the Lumberjack of years gone by. The menu has shrunk quite a bit. Our favourite staples are no longer there (steak sandwich, burger on a ciabatta bun etc.). Our lunch was very meh. Portions were big, but it really wasn't worth it. It seemed like the microwaved dinner from the night before. And not even re-heated that well. The only saving grace was our server, who was very sweet. I have had terrible service and mediocre food the last 2 times I went to the Lumberjack. Food took over an hour, the food was not as described and tasteless (my omelette was missing the pimento sauce and the chorizo sausage was possible hotdog or baloney). Ahhh, The Lumberjack, a Windsor staple. This place has been open for as long as I can remember. I remember coming here as a kid. Yesterday morning I came for breakfast with my boyfriend and his friend. We needed a breakfast place to eat and this is the first place that came to mind. I remember coming to breakfast here years ago before I moved away. It definitely felt nostalgic coming back. We came for breakfast and I ordered the Scottish breakfast, which was eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and home fries with onions, they ask you if you'd like them with or without the onions. My boyfriend ordered the BLT, no mayo, yellow mustard instead with home fries, breakfast sausage and it came with coleslaw which no one ate. My boyfriends friend ordered the eggs Benedict. Our meals came out in good time and the food was actually really good. I enjoyed the smoked salmon and eggs, maybe a bit too much holondaise sauce, but otherwise very good. The home fries were flavoured perfectly and tasted great, my boyfriend and his friend also enjoyed their meals. Came here for brunch at 11 am on a Thursday. Was happy to see lots of empty tables when I entered because I thought this would mean fast service. It did not. The server was clearly overwhelmed completely rushing through taking our order when she finally did take our order. Definitely do not order a steak from here, you will be disappointed. I don't have much to say about this place but I'm going to pull something together... A friend brought me here and raved about the breakfast. Maybe I should have gotten something from the breakfast menu because I was very UNDERwhelmed. I started with French onion soup which was very bland and had the thickest layer of cheese EVER! My entree was the lamb chops. Also SUPER BLAND! They're called seasoned lamb chops but ironically they were the most tasteless chops I've ever had. The service was extremely slow! My parents discovered this little gem asking the concierge at Casino Windsor where he liked to eat. My father really likes it, it is his kind of joint. He really likes the good, huge and hearty breakfasts with jumbo sized eggs, happy peameal bacon and personal carafe of coffee. The corned beef sandwiches are supposedly legendary in Windsor. They have wood grilled steaks and chops with other traditional items for dinner. They even have senior discounts woohoo. My husband and I have met them for dinner over here a couple of times on wood grill nights and we have enjoyed it. The atmosphere is strictly casual, very old school and a bit run down, you will not expect much. The food makes up for it and you will be pleasantly surprised. I have to say I have never witnessed someone cutting a steak just for me off a large slab of beef. Here that is what you will see. Thursday through Sunday they have a wood grill on which they will cook your steaks with fresh veggies over Canadian maple and hardwoods, it is right in the dining room and you can watch the entire process. I had the strip and butterflied shrimp on one occasion and a T-bone on the other. Both were really very good indeed. The special meal comes with the veggies of course, soup and salad bar and your choice of potato or rice. You will get stuffed. I like the flavor from the wood grill and the steaks both times were cooked to order, tender and juicy. I am also a fan of grilled veggies so that made me happy. I had a baked potato my first time but smartened up and got spiced up home fries the second which were better. Service was very friendly, you can tell my parents are regulars as the hostess, waitress and the chef are friendly and greet them specially. A lot of people in here seem to be regulars but I notice other people are treated just fine as well. The salad bar is tiny but has very nice ingredients on it as well as decent dressings. They also had a couple extra salad creations and bread too. The soup was nice both times but not terribly memorable.You get pretty filled up with all this stuff. We always skip dessert and go to the custard place down the road my mom likes for small cones instead. I also have to swing by a shop to stock up on a boatload of my beloved coffee crisps and the Canadian kitkats which are just better than ours for some reason. All in all very reasonable and happy. This place definitely went down hill I ordered the eggs Benny (17.50) English muffin was hard (waitress gave me a new one very nice) the Hollandaise sauce had no flavour it tasted almost watered down. We were seated fairly quickly near the open grill. Drink service was quick as we perused the menu. The Lumberjack has a fairly extensive breakfast menu, which left us with a lot of choices. I went with the Timber Special which I could tell would be a fairly sizeable breakfast. It took about 15 minutes for our food to arrive and there was a ton of it. I was looking forward to the peameal because I've never had it before. I wasn't disappointed. It was a little on the salty side, but it was tasty. The rest of the breakfast was good. It didn't strike me as anything exceptional, but it was good. I think the pancakes would have been great if I would have gotten to them while they were hot. That's what I get for my devotion to eggs. The check came quickly and we paid and were on our way. The service was great and the server was kind enough to help us out with locating some Spitfires gear on a Sunday. If I'm ever up in the Detroit area, I would definitely head across the river (provided our friends at the border crossing are a little less uptight) again. read more

I love big, old restaurants with long menus and funny fixtures (both lighting and people). The Lumberjack delivers on all of these fronts. For $6.50 you can hit their salad and soup bar, but I avoided it. I wish I was a better person, but in those situations I always just end up eating my weight in cottage cheese and pickles. I was invited here with some friends for supper the other night. It was my first time there and even though it was really busy, our waitress was nice and friendly. My friends enjoyed their food. Me on the otherhand, was not crazy about my Canadian Stir Fry dish. The waitress said it was her favourite thing on the entire menu so I was really looking forward to it. It had some chicken and cooked veggies on top of the pasta noodles with a white sauce. To me, it was pretty blah. Not a lot of seasoning/taste. I would not recommend it. Came here around 7:30 A.M. with my boyfriend (April 9). We're both students so we had class in an hour or so, and I really wanted some breakfast. He's been here many times for post-swim practice breakfast with his team and I've been here one other time for their battered white fish (It was a big piece of fish that was limp and tasted gross. I made myself finish a quarter of it before I called it quits). This particular morning, he ordered The Lumberjack special (the first morning menu option). Came with 2 slices toast (cut into triangles), 2 eggs (he had them sunny-side up), meat option (he chose sausages) and home fries. I had a one egg (scrambled), sausages, and a side order of home fries, and it came with toast. He liked his eggs and so did I. But it wasn't anything special, something you could make at home. He liked his sausages and so did I. Meat is juicy and packs a lot of flavour. He liked his toast but I didn't touch mine because I was kind of full already. Now, the home fries. They're made with garlic and seasoning which sounds fantastic but they're not really memorable. They taste okay. On a scale of O.K., 1 being 'okay I guess....wouldn't try it again though...' to 'OKAY! Yeah!', it was like a 4? I made potatoes the night before and they were WAY better than these. He noted that. I'd go to Elias on Ouellette (right by CIBC) for some awesome home fries. Service was good. Place had a few tables of four and five full (they open at 6 A.M.) so it was nice. Mostly truckers or construction workers. I would come here again to try other things on the menu but only because my friends give SUCH great reviews here so I'm trying to find something good. Steak and eggs here are great! As well with the Timber special- add fruit to the pancakes! Coffee is good too, and they give you a whole carafe. I've had their dinner menu as well, and quite enjoy the chicken of the woods, and their clubhouses. The one thing I find, and reason for 4 stars, is that their homefries are very hit or miss. Sometimes very good, cooked right with the onions and spices, but sometimes they are mushy and taste funny. Service is sometimes a bit slow, but always friendly (they're very busy). The food is delicious, the staff uber friendly and portion size big enough to feed, well.....a lumberjack. Be prepared for lineups on holidays, but the staff can turnover tables quickly and the place is larger than it appears from the outside. We went for a big brunch Sunday afternoon. The place was paacckkkeeeedddd. I assume that that's usual for their Sundays. The food is really good and the wait staff is great too. Just make sure to ask your waiter or waitress if you have questions cause the other staff members probably won't know too much about the menu. I ended up getting an eggwhite omelet with cheese and mushrooms and home fries. They have two optioned for home fries, deep fried or grilled with onions. Definetly go grilled, I made the mistake of going deep fried and they aren't anywhere near as good as the grilled. I also tried my friends waffles. Amazing!! Huge a puffy and crisp and great. The only issue is we were not able to reserve a table, which was kind of annoying. When we got there, there was a line out the door so we almost left to find another place since there were quite a few of us. But it turned out someone in our party got their early and we just kept adding tables to our area as people left. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended to me by a friend who used to live in Windsor and is now my favourite breakfast stop when I'm in the city! It's just what you would expect, wood tables, saws, a bit dated (ok, quite dated), but that all adds to the charm. The food is great, I love a good breakfast and this place delivers. Been waiting to try this place. It seems every time we are down and want to pop in for breakfast it was packed! With good reason. Breakfast was great. I had eggs benedict and it was heaven. You can have it with homefries, pancakes or french toast. I chose the home fries ..thank god! I was stuffed and hubby had to have the last few bites. We had lunch and I was underwhelmed with the quality of the food. The service, although polite, was also lacking. I had the hot hamburger with mashed potatoes. The potatoes had lumps and came with more gravy in the centre than necessary causing it to drain out all over the table when I tried to mix it with the potatoes. No taste at all to the over boiled veg. The patty was burned tasting. My husband had the Yukon Club which was good. His fries were excellent but the coleslaw was bland. At no point were we asked how we liked the food even when I advised the waiter he could remove my nearly full plate. The decor is kind of odd. The Lumberjack is exactly everything you would imagine it to be - wood tables and chairs, saws on display...I'm surprised they don't force the waitstaff to wear overalls and plaid jackets! We came in for an early breakfast on a rainy Thursday morning. We orderd the Country Breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, and toast for $4.85) and the Steak and Eggs ($14.35) plus an extra $.35 for grilled hashbrowns. Porrtions were hearty. The steak came medium rare and it was tasty. Country breakfast was standard fare. Coffee was $2.20 and it came in a caraffe so free refills a plenty but a bit on the pricey side since the average coffee costs $1.50 - $1.75 unless it's a specialty like Americano or expresso. Service was friendly but a bit slow when we asked for our cheque. The place was pretty busy on a Wed. morning. Food was alright but not exceptional...I probably wouldn't come back just for the breakfast. read more

The Salisbury steak was dry and tasteless, the patty melt was dry, there were no onions on it and it had processed cheddar cheese instead of swiss. Ordered two half orders of flapjacks, one coffee, one Coke and a side of bacon. Total came to $22. All the items were charged separately. Seemed a bit much for what was ordered. Pancakes crumpled when cut. Didn't have the right consistency. Surprising for an all day breakfast place. Coffee was good. Bacon had the right crispness. Waitress was friendly and helpful. The Lumberjack is one of those quintessential breakfast joints - nothing overly pretentious nor trashy. They provide what everyone looks for in a breakfast restaurant - delicious, greasy breakfast food, convivial waitstaff, and a quaint and rustic atmosphere. The Lumberjack's decor immediately sets it apart from other Windsor breakfast places - exposed beams and lumberjacking equipment (saws, axes, etc.) hang from the rafters. The authenticity is unmistakeable. The food here is very palatable. Portion sizes are good, the syrup is charmingly served in old ketchup bottles, every table gets their own coffeepot, and the $0.35 griddle-fried homefries are a must-have add-on to any meal. Some of the meals are absolute winners (e.g. the Eggs Benedict, which will wipe your hangovers away, no questions asked), while others are best avoided (e.g. the East Coast breakfast, with its questionably-sourced fish cakes).
