I celebrated my birthday at Joe Muer's it was a nice experience with my partner. We tried the lobster dinner and Branzino. It was nice that the full fish was brought and the. Offered to fully the fish at tableside. This removed the major bones. The lobster was a nice size. For an appetizer, we tried the oyster Rockefellers those were just all right. They were too cheesy in my opinion. I was looking forward to getting some sushi. But was informed they may be doing away with the sushi. The drinks were excellent The bartender even had an extra punch-- a little went a long way. The ambience at this location is nice cause you're looking out to the water from the Detroit Riverfront. There is parking across from the entrance where you can get exchanged for a validated ticket, this would be nice to know when making reservations. Just a fantastic dinner this evening with colleagues. Before the Detroit Pistons game, we got together for a nice, casual, seafood dinner as our own version of, "pregaming". Starting with the maître D, carried over to both the waitress and our table server, everyone was polite, courteous, and very attentive. Looking over the list of appetizers, we went with the calamari. About 10 minutes later, it showed up and as it turned out, the portion was good for the four of us. The calamari was not rubbery, but prepared exactly how you would want it. It has a bit of a kick to it, but not so much as to be overwhelming. Before the calamari they brought us a bread basket with four types of breads for us to dip into a bowl of delicious tasting sauce. Because this was a pregaming event, we had to include a cocktail with our dinner. Two of us went with a Woodford reserve old-fashion made to perfection. There's quite a few choices of entrées to choose from and being this is a seafood restaurant I went with the servers recommendation and chose the "Dover". As part of the experience, they fillet the fish right in front of you. A nice touch. The fish was out of this world good. Flaky white meat, with enough there to fill you up. Even with the filleting experience, they did miss a bone. But that happens. No problem. With a choice of sides I went with the steamed spinach. A rather small portion, but it was very good. For the price you would've expected more. Beautiful view of the water looking over towards Canada. If ever in town again, this is a place I would return to. read more

I ordered the fish and she got the beef. Amazing!! The shell was very unique and I definitely liked the fish more. I also got the Caesar salad and enjoyed my cocktails as well. Getting in was a little confusing at first but we figured it out. They validate your parking which was a win. Celebrating my birthday at Joe Muer was an experience I'll never forget. The atmosphere alone made the night special, but the live piano on the weekend truly brought the moment to life. The pianist wished me happy birthday multiple times, and it made me feel so seen and appreciated. We ordered calamari, oysters, sushi, a Delmonico steak, the branzino, and the seafood tower. They filleted the branzino table side, which added such an elegant touch to the evening. The seafood tower was extraordinary, and the king crab was unbelievably sweet and fresh ..easily the best I have ever had. I would return for the seafood tower alone. Everything we tasted was perfectly prepared, and the service was warm, attentive, and polished. I walked out feeling incredibly grateful. I was in the city for a big convention. John Muer Seafood was highly recommended. The location at the Renaissance is where I went. Due to this large convention, I know the restaurant was overwhelmed. I ate at the bar and the server/bartender was extremely rude and condescending. When we called management over, management stated that the reason he was that way was because they were inundated with more customers than they were used to and basically we had to accept this behavior. When I stressed that this was not acceptable, management stated what do you want me to do and walked away. The crash part about all of this is that I was trying to pay my bill and there's an automatic 20% (which is located on the menu ) gratuity on shitty ass service from both employee and management. Enjoyed a meal with a view at this riverside restaurant. You get a great view of the Detroit River, and you can even see glimpses of Canada on the other side! We started with a half bottle of Chardonnay, which was sweet and refreshing. The complementary bread came with a mix of crackers, bread, butter, and bean sauce. The bread was just okay, which was fine since I was mainly looking forward to the meal. The clam chowder was delicious while the lobster bisque was good but not mind blowing. The Great Lakes walleye was pleasantly surprising--the fish was flavorful and the saffron rice and sauce went really well with it. The Fruits of the Sea came with a good medley of seafood, including shrimp, scallops, clams, with a mix of spinach and peppers. It came with pasta as well so it was a hearty and creamy meal. The tiger shrimp scampi was a good light meal since the portion wasn't as big, but I liked how the shrimp were tender and the duck confit was a nice touch to the meal. The service was excellent and our waiter made sure we always had what we needed. 20% gratuity is included in the meal, and they made it clear when we got the bill. Make sure to make a reservation for a seat with a good view, and be aware that they do have a dress code. Parking is validated only at certain garages like the marriott hotel one. Friday night, no reservations and nearly immediately sat at 5:30pm. Service was impeccable and our server, Benjamin was incredibly helpful. I truly appreciated that he took the time to answer our questions (even those unrelated to the food) and made sure we knew about the gratuity. We were pre-dinner rush before a concert, so it was the perfect, non rushed stop. They weren't busy, we had nearly a whole section to ourselves. The view was spectacular. From the first welcome, to the final goodbye, we experienced such genuine, friendly service from every staff person we interacted with. The fried calamari with shishito peppers was so unique and delicious! We were then excited to try Canadian lobster which was perfectly steamed - and were delighted to have it cut up for us at the table. As experienced lobster aficionados, it was a new and welcome experience to have someone else do the major struggling! The lobster was delicious, as were the mushrooms and asparagus we ordered along with it. The view of the Detroit River in its full- blown stormy glory and the Windsor skyline behind it, accompanied by live music, made for a truly lovely, romantic dinner that was the highlight of our stay in Detroit. Wanted to have a nice dinner in downtown Detroit. This place was highly recommended to us by gentlemen at the cigar lounge. Fried Calamari was so tender and perfectly fried. Whatever the case, my experience definitely warrants a review. We came here for my mother's birthday. We are super excited to be here. They gave us a table with the most beautiful view of the Detroit River, where we could see right across to the Windsor Casino. The scenery was beautiful. My entire family looked beautiful. The birthday girl, my mom look absolutely stunning. We were looking forward to a wonderful dinner. Things started off really well. Our waiter saw us taking photos and came over and volunteered to take the photos for us. After that, he passed out the menus and went over the day's specials. My sister was interested in one of the specials and asked about the price. The waiter seemed disgusted and made a face when she asked. I guess from there he made it up in his mind that we didn't deserve to be there nor could we afford to be there if we had to ask the price for the special. He was rude and short for the remainder of our time there. They bought us bread as we waited for our food to arrive and at a certain point the bread that my mother was eating, was taken away along with the butter. She let the waiter know that he had taken the bread that she was still eating and he responded with annoyance stating that they were going to be bringing more as though it was common knowledge. My mother is a sweetheart. She wasn't rude. She wasn't mean. She just let him know that he had taken the plate that she was still eating off of. Even when he responded harshly, she said "oh sorry I didn't know". The food was just OK. My sister had to send her steak back multiple times because it was prepared incorrectly. She asked for medium well. The first two times it was raw and then the last time it was overcooked. They offered to bring her something else to which she declined because after three times of not getting it right, there was no point in trying again. I got a shrimp dish. It was very underwhelming. I could've stopped at the appetizers and been satisfied. The appetizers were OK. We did a lobster tempura that looked a lot better than it tasted. We also did calamari and that was actually really good. When it was time to go, most of us needed containers for our food. My father who is older and has dementia asked our waiter for a box. The waiter responded that he could box it up for him and then he disappeared and he didn't come back for a very long time. When he finally came back, my father asked for a box again to which the waiter responded with annoyance "I said i was gonna box it up", and then he proceeded to snatch my father's plate and dump the contents into the box. I looked at my sister upset at the display and how he was treating my father. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but I knew that my father had bones that needed to be put in the trash on that plate and I told myself if we got home and those bones were in fact in his box then my assumptions about this waiters bad attitude and carelessness would be correct. Even though some of us at the table, we're not feeling the waiter's behavior, we refusedrefuse to let him ruin our great night...even as we observed him greet everyone else with a smile. We were the only Black people there and our waiter was also Black. To be honest, I believe that stereotyped us. At the end of it, all our bill was around $500 and he got a nice tip. After we closed out, suddenly he wanted to be kind. He even tried to make small talk with me as I waited for my family to get done in the restroom before we left. It was too little too late. Had a reservation scheduled and had to place a deposit for $350. Was told you must be on time (we were, all 11 of us) cause your reservation is for1.5 hrs...and stood in lobby for 45 minutes. No drinks, not even water. Totally screwed up the bill, charging us again for deposit with 20& tip added on. There was NO service other than setting the table and serving drinks. It was a gorgeous buffet, great food . I've been there 4 times for Mother's Day .will not go back! I recently went to Joe Muer Seafood for a group gathering in one of the private dining rooms. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was a large sign stating the restaurant's dress code. For this type of establishment, I thought it would be pretty obvious, but I guess they get a lot of people who need the reminder. I checked in at the front desk and was taken to the room quickly. Since the group was so big, there was a set menu ($115) in place with shared appetizers,a salad course, a choice of 4 different entrees, shared sides, and a choice of 3 different desserts. In total, the food consisted of: Shrimp Ilene - Well, they weren't lying about these being colossal. Huge shrimp covered in a nice savory and nutty brown butter sauce. Unfortunately, the shrimp were overcooked with tough and rubbery meat. Not a good start. Oysters Rockefeller - These oysters were served on a bed of sea salt - bad idea. These were not plated cleanly, resulting in the sea salt going over the top into the creamed spinach. Super salty. Roquefort Wedge - This is the laziest wedge salad I've ever seen. Everything needed to be cut and assembled by the diner. At least the French dressing was applied appropriately, with enough between each individual lettuce leaf. Oven Roasted Barramundi - Just look at the picture and tell me this is something you would be happy getting at a fine dining destination. This is the worst presentation for fish I have ever seen. Lobster/crab cake almost disintegrating, the fish looking as if chef was hungry and decided to sneak a few bites. I honestly can't believe they thought it was okay to bring out this dish. At least the Barramundi was nice and tender with only a hint of fishiness. The veggies were also fine - however, the waiters forgot to give me a knife to cut the haricot verts. The lobster/crab cake was complete mush but at least had a decent shellfish taste. Creamed Spinach - I'm normally not a fan of creamed spinach in the first place, so take this with a grain of salt. This tasted like spinach cooked in milk (super milky lactose flavor), with no aromatics and no cheese. At the end of the dinner, the serving dish was still 90% full, so I think that tells how much everyone liked this dish. Black Truffle Mac and Cheese - Taste-wise and presentation, this was fine. Nice cheese crust on top, Cheese sauce included visible specks of truffle with a strong truffle taste. Very one note truffle flavor: truffle salt + artificial truffle oil perhaps? The cavatappi pasta was severely overcooked and almost to the point of being mush. The pasta would fall apart as I spooned it onto my plate. Cheesecake - No complaints about this one. It's a cheesecake, hard to mess that up. Oh, one thing is they forgot to bring me a fork to eat this with. I had to take the fork from one of the guests who couldn't make it. Joe Muer Seafood has fine dining prices with presentation and construction worse than Applebees and service to match. I do not recommend eating here. The only reason they don't get a 1 is because at least some of the food was decent. read more

We had a large group of 9 with 3 children and 1 vegetarian. We ordered sushi's, appetizers and salads then mains. The 3 kids ordered their own meals, the vegetarian ordered her own, and one more person ordered his own. We ordered 5 mains including New York strip, rack of lamb, while Bronzino, stuffed lobster and dove sole. The waiter Calvin told us we needed another delmonico steak. As it turned out we had so much food that the Delmonico steak was barely touched. Both steaks were well done instead of medium rare. When the bill came he over charged us an extra order of New York strip steak, a lobster bisque and another clam chowder. When I asked about that he acted as if I was such a bother. When he finally admitted to the mistake he told me he was going to remove one New York strip steak, one soup and the lobster bisque. I was in a hurry and did look too closely. When I finally looked at the bill he still over charged us for another clam chowder. The service was horrible. He never smiled and the whole time he acted like we were there to bother him he kept hand us the dishes instead of placing them on the table. On top of that he never apologized for the mistake. I came here as part of a large group with a bunch of friends. I had heard many good things about this place, but I was very disappointed. The dinner started with a bread basket with a variety of breads with a few sides: a small dollop of smoked salmon spread, cannellini beans, and "butter". It's in parenthesis because it was whipped and tasted oily on the tongue and so I highly doubt it was butter. It was a bad starting omen. They also had table "olive oil" and "basalmic vinegar". The olive oil tasted like slightly rancid neutral oil, without any peppery or grassy notes. The basalmic vinegar was more like red wine vinegar. The appetizers were somewhat unappetizing. The shrimp ilene was ok- the very large shrimp were slightly overcooked, but they served as a decent vehicle for the toasted almond lemon butter. The oysters Rockefeller was a dud. The presentation looked very nice and they were served on a bed of salt. The creamed spinach on top was gross and did not work at all with the dish. The Roquefort wedge salad was disappointing. I have never been to a place that serves wedge salad with a dull butter knife rather than a steak knife and expects you to saw away at the lettuce. It's a lot of work. The hard boiled egg (which still had a piece of egg shell on it that I had to pick off), tomato wedge, pile of bacon, and dollop of Roquefort cheese were all arranged to be segregated and in the most unappealing way possible. By the way, one of my friends has a dairy intolerance and asked for no cheese, and his plate had double the amount of Roquefort that mine had. Another one of my friends doesn't eat pork, and his plate had bacon. I guess that's why everything was separated so they don't have to listen to food restrictions and instead can have the diner pick them off. The surf and turf (Petit filet mignon with scallops) was the only decent part of the meal. When I ordered, the waiter didn't even ask me how I wanted my steak cooked; I had to flag him down and ask. Huge red flag for a fine dining establishment. The filet mignon was cooked to my specification (medium rare) and the scallops were seared perfectly with a sweet clean taste. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were forgettable and inoffensive. The entrees my companions got were also sad-sounding. My friend with the dairy intolerance was told that the Barramundi didn't contain any milk, but the pan sauce clearly had dairy in it. He sent it back and received it sans sauce, but he still took lactose pills as he didn't trust the establishment. His dish's stuffing looked like it would disintegrate into a pile of mush if you looked at it for too long-it was already falling apart by the time it made it to the table. The sides were inadequate. The creamed spinach was disgusting. The consistency reminded me of baby food. There wasn't much flavor. Ruth's Chris does it much, much better. There's a reason why there's a whole bunch of copy-cat recipies for RC and not for Joe Muer. The black truffle mac and cheese was overcooked to a mush, but did have a nice flavor. Usually the dessert is the saving grace of any meal, but the chocolate cake was a tragedy. In an attempt to make the plating look high end, they drizzled it with what tastes like Hershey's chocolate syrup. The frosting tasted like Betty Crocker. I am usually a huge dessert fan, but this just had me sad and dispirited. I have to reassess if the people who recommended this place to me have dentures or weak mouth muscles because half the dishes I tried seems to be catered towards people who like very, very soft foods, not at all what I was expecting from this place. read more

The place was nearly empty except for a large group of about 16 people which included two very young children who were running around the table and a crying baby. I almost asked to be moved but the mother was r.i.g.h.t. there and already looked distressed, so we sat down, sighed, and ordered drinks. I ordered a dry Negroni, timeless classic, and received some lurid pink thing over crushed ice. My husband only drinks beer, but even he laughed. We clinked glasses, toasted the view and spent way too much money for the "experience". I imagine this place thinks it's fine dining, but clearly they are in error. -Bread service slow. -Water glasses empty. -About the third time the waiter said your entrees are on the way my husband started quoting Princess Bride to me "I do not think that means what he thinks it means" -husbands side of scallops excellent, main entree fish special inedibly dry -my seafood pasta way way way overcooked and mushy, clams and mussels burned to a crisp -asked for dessert carryout and it was smashed beyond recognition into a too small container Funny, except it cost $$$, strongly advise to think twice about going to this restaurant. The view is free outside. Grab a nearby Panera sandwich and save yourself some expensive pain. read more

I visited here for the first time over the weekend. The seafood we had was great!! We had 2 different kinds of raw oysters. I had the lobster bisque, which was very rich and yummy: Rich broth with butter poached lobster infused with sherry and crème I followed that with the crab stuffed Atlantic flounder, which was really delicious, too: Oven-roasted with whole grain mustard beurre blanc I really enjoyed the hit of nutmeg in the creamed spinach. We also got the sautéed mushroom blend to accompany our meal, too: Shitake, Button, and Beech with sliced garlic and zip sauce GF Overall, we had way too much food and had to take some home, but everything we had was so delicious, and I don't know what I would have skipped. I loved the view out the abundant windows as we ate. It's a really nice place for a celebration. While it's not my very favorite among the numerous options in Detroit, I really enjoyed myself and wouldn't be upset if we went back. Definitely worth a visit!! read more

Upon arriving, my mother and I were warmly greeted, my jacket was taken, and we were seated promptly despite not having a reservation. The ambiance was absolutely beautiful, with a stunning view of the Detroit River and Canada across the water. Our waiter was polite, albeit a bit cold, while the bussers were amazing. The food presentation was very nice, and the calamari was particularly enjoyable. However, the rest of the food was just okay The shrimp was too much garlic for such little shrimp. Despite this, overall, it was a great visit during my trip to Detroit. read more

Really nice ambiance, especially around December because they have lots of Christmas trees and wreaths around the restaurant. Service was good, I didn't experience any issues Food was very good, no complaints Mac and cheese was good, asparagus was good, and we really enjoyed the truffle fries. Cannot begin to express how much I loved this place. You get to enjoy amazing food with a great atmosphere and a spectacular view of Canada across the river. It's just beautiful. The food seemed pricey as expected but once that filet melted like butter and I got a taste of their lavender gin drink, the crimson something... my mind changed completely. It's actually very reasonably priced. Our waitress, TAYLOR, was so friendly and so welcoming and helpful.
