Amazing!!!! Incredible seafood!!! Everything tasted so fresh! Our group of 8 made a reservation two days in advance. We sat upstairs and it is such a lively restaurant. Very loud but fun atmosphere!

    Side salad is good.

It is not realistic to review a dense menu in 3 minutes and decide an order for a party of 5. The Killarney whiskey rivals the Jamesone Black Barrel whiskey. Onion rings were undercooked. Clam chowder soup was good except for the singular hair in it. The prawns are really small shrimp. Scallops and Sea Bass with squid ink risotto were really good.

    Delicious, garlicky crab claws.

The Mad Monk was recommended to us by the Concierge of an exclusive local hotel, and this turned out to be one of our favorite meals in Ireland. We were eating between lunchtime and dinnertime, so fortunately we did not need a reservation. We sat at an outside table, enjoying the spring weather, and engaging in fantastic people watching. Our server was new, and umm.... awkward, but the meal turned out to be really enjoyable. I started with a cold refreshing cider to drink. For our meal, my friend and I shared the Portmagee crab claws in garlic butter with sourdough bread, and a spinach and cheese (brie? goat?) salad with beets and hazelnuts, that I think was just a special they were running. All the food was outstanding. The crab claws were meaty and flavorful; the salad completely fresh and interesting. Loved it all. We raved about this place to friends later, who ended up eating there too, and loved it. I highly recommend a visit!

I'm from the New England area of the United States and have eaten PEI muscles my entire life. The mussels here at The Mad Monk were hands down the best mussels I've ever had. Very fresh, extremely clean, large, and the white wine cream sauce was drinkable. If you like fresh seafood, highly recommend The Mad Monk. We eat upstairs; service and atmosphere was great.

We shared and were very happy!

We loved the squid, crab claws and Monk Fish, but the Fish and chips were cooked too hard.

Just off the main drag and across the alley from some nice Irish Music at the pub next door you'll find the Mad Monk. Seafood is their specialty and you'll have a hard time finding it fresher or tastier anywhere. For the steak fans, the New York is excellent too! Don't miss this place!

What a gem! The service and food is delicious. If you're only located in the US I'll be a regular customer. Thank you!

WOW! I'm having dreams of this place still. From start to end this place was perfection. I arrived around 7pm on Wednesday and was seated immediately. I started with the half dozen local oysters. They were delicious and the sweet onion sauce in the middle went perfectly with them. The crab claws were next and they were tender and cooked to perfection. Finally, I ended with their warm crumble of the day. It was berries and apples and it was divine. Service was excellent. Ambiance was perfect. I highly recommend The Mad Monk to anyone looking for a delicious meal in Killarney.

Finally!! After 6 days in Ireland we were looking for THE meal that would be memorable for our trip. This was the restaurant to do it. Wife had the sea bass and I had a special with black sole. Both were great. Service was great, and we just walked in with no reservation on a Sunday evening.

Nice atmosphere and great food. We had the lobster and squid and it was delicious. Squid was very lightly fried.

My family and I ate dinner here last night. It was some of the best salmon I have ever had and the potatoes were good as well.

"Sea bass" served with a nice pomegranate mango topping, fried half potatoes and steamed vegetables. Both were good. Murphys beer on tap for those tired of Guinness. Service efficient but not chatty. We chose the alfresco option. We started with an order of oysters and a a bottle of Little Eden Shariz from eastern Australia. It was was smooth, with a nice nose and a smooth finish. The ostyers were amazing, just wish I could have had my horseradish and Tabasco sauce with them. The sea bass was very good and I really liked the mango pomegranate salsa which is unusual for me as I would normally not even taste such a concoction. The salsa was tasty and paired very well with the sea bass. The side salad was difficult to eat. The cup was small and spillage was inevitable. The service was good with one exception, the bill for dinner was never brought to the table, after waiting for a while, I went in and paid the tab. Prehaps that's a cultural thing. Prices were moderate-high. All in all an enjoyable but it did not rise to the level of five star.

They greeted me warmly and did a wonderful job of taking my food and drink order. The chowder was absolutely fantastic and the service could not have been better. This restaurant is very peaceful. comfortable and somewhat elegant at the same time. The only negative was that the restaurant got slammed right as I was finishing my meal. When I say slammed, I would say that about 60 people came in various size parties. I had to wait for 25 minutes for my check. I am an American so I may be unfamiliar with the customs in Ireland. I would have at least appreciated some eye contact while I was waiting for my check. They also seemed hesitant to let me take my chowder home, but that also might be a cultural thing that I just don't understand I would go back anytime if I was in Killarney.

We chose the prawn cocktail to start, roast supreme of chicken, and the 16 ounce t-bone. The prawn cocktail came in a large crystal serving dish with about 10 prawns covered in a Rose Marie sauce on a bed of lettuce. Prawns were well cooked, nice and tender, and sweet. Two slices of brown bread and butter. The chicken was lightly fried and came with a stuffing of thyme and spring onion, gravy and French fries. Chicken was well cooked, flavorful and juicy. The fries were nice and crispy. The t-bone was 16ounces and came with mushrooms, onions, onion rings and fries. The steak was cooked as requested, medium rare. The mushrooms were small button mushrooms with sautéed onions. Part of the steak was nice and tender but there were parts that were tough and grisly and fatty. It was okay but not something I would order again. The onion rings, 3, were heavily breaded, stuck together and were not appetizing to look at and definitely not to eat. The fries were nice and crispy and served very not. This was an okay meal but based on it I'm not sure we'd make a return trip. Seating was probably the most comfortable that we have found recently but the place is very noisy and makes it hard to hold a conversation. Service was mediocre in that once we got our main meal we didn't see a server to come back and check to see home things were. They were extremely busy so this might account for that but I'm not sure. .

The host was welcoming, we were quickly seated at our table and we were handed our menus. We chose Gaby's because of the seafood options and meats. And they were delicious. I had 6 oysters, which were fresh and briny, then followed with the rack of lamb. Wow. The lamb is amazing in Ireland but this was extra tender and cooked perfectly for me- med rare. Others tried the seafood platter, broiled and it looked very good. Even the younger one that had chicken fingers was happy. It's no more pricey than any good restaurant (except for the fresh cold water lobsters - those were very expensive - we live in New England so to pay that cost was outrageous.) The atmosphere was charming- if a bit crowded with the tables a bit to close. Servers had to navigate between the chairs. I would definitely recommend the lamb and oysters !! The pie of the day, not on the menu, was steak and kidney, which I had to try "for research purposes". The pastry crust extended to the sides and bottom so it fully enclosed the filling and was served "freestanding". Crust and gravy were excellent. In the filling, both the steak and the kidneys were plentiful. My research completed, I probably wouldn't order it again; just give me the steak - no more kidneys please! Nevertheless I did enjoy and finished it. This was served with decent fries and a truly excellent green salad: a variety of leafy greens, radishes, cucumbers, pickled onions, and pre-dressed with a vinaigrette. The wife had the Beef & Guinness Casserole, served with brown bread. Along with steak there were also plentiful veggies (root vegetables and celery) and mashed potatoes in the center. She liked it. I tried it and agreed. I would get that next time. I had a Jameson Old Fashioned to drink and it was the best Old Fashioned I've had in some time. The unusually large twisted orange peel probably contributed and it may have had more than the customary amount of bitters. The wife's tea was amusingly served with a knitted "cozy" keeping the teapot hot. For dessert we shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with vanilla ice cream, attractively presented with a dusting of sugar, whipped cream, and a ground cherry complete with its leaves. I'd rate it second among the three I've tried so far. Would certainly order it again. As for the pub I can't say. It has a reputation for good traditional Irish music every night but unfortunately not until 9:30, way too late for us. Sadly we're just not pub people.
