When you put in thrift stores in this area you get a myriad of options that don't necessarily fit a thrift store motif. I have been, and continue to, search for items for my apartment. It's little odds and ends that I think I need and only I understand what I am looking for. In hopes of finding a decent spot to browse, I came here. Now, although they didn't have anything that I wanted to look for, I did spend a good amount of time browsing. That is the one thing that you will need when you enter here, time. There is a ton of stuff in here that you can easily lose yourself in. However, if you are claustrophobic, bypass this place. The aisles are extra small and this could be on the verge of a hoarder case. You kind of have to go with the flow of everyone else in the store, and that means you really can't retrace your footsteps if you need to. Unless you are the only person in the store, which is a rarity. The owner of this place is amazing. She is so full of life and greets everyone that walks in the door. She makes sure that you have what you need even if you didn't expect that you needed it. If you have some time, give this place a shot as there are things in here that you wouldn't expect to find. read more

It seems the rating on Yelp for this place is very inflated compared to Google, where the reviews are more in line with my experience. I went to this store with a friend and the owner followed us around the store. She then told us to zip up our purses, presumably because she believed we would steal something. I told her I didn't appreciate the accusation and racial profiling (though based on other negative reviews, perhaps she does this to everyone?) and she followed me out of the store insisting that she wasn't accusing us of anything and questioning how we could think that. Seems a lot of people have consistently bad experiences; am very surprised this place has been in business for so long. read more

Great place to buy chotchkas and children's and baby's presents. I bought a beautiful embroidered scull cap aka Yamulka for a dear friend who is quite active in our Shul. I also bought a jump rope to exercise as I use to love jump roping. Finally. Because it us Fall I purchased a supposedly pumpkin spiced fabric cup warmer. It was vacant of any pumpkin spice or any scent at all. After calling and reporting it to the owner Denise, Denise invited me to come back and return it for a credit. I shall. I have been in this property previously, and did not relish the idea of returning. This time, the experience was even worse. As other reviewers have noted, the store is very crowded and disorganized. The proprietor is immediately in your face, asking what you are looking for. She was helpful in locating the item I wanted (at a supposed steal), but that is when the real fun began. No credit cards, and exact change for cash payments, with no receipt returned. I had to spend as much on the ATM fee as the item's cost, and then had to make a purchase from a neighboring establishment to obtain the denomination she needed. At least she didn't talk my ear off this time, and I made it through the back-and-forth trips in and out of the store without tripping myself (I have thinning bones, and can't risk a fall). read more

Love the selection of crystals, candles, smudged and other fun little items which were the perfect vibe to decorate and my yoga space. It's filled to the brim and has a lot of options for unique gifts and decorations. The owner was very kind and helpful and gave us some funny life advice. I bought a small cross body bag from here and after a few short weeks the zipper started to tare out. I brought it back with the receipt and the owner then accused me of ripping it and doing something wrong with no resolution to the issue. She refused to replace it or refund the amount I paid. I have never been so disrespected in my life. She said to not blame her. The items are poor quality and not well made. I will never shop there again and encourage others not to. read more

The name, is beyond fitting. Since I had no idea what I was walking into, as I opened the door I wondered for a moment if I had entered another dimension. I even had to double check if I walked through the right door because the entrance, as it is throughout the space, is literally brimming from floor to ceiling. It was visual sensory overload from the moment I walked in. But I mean that in the most magical way. You could spend hours in here, just slowly, inch by inch discovering all kind of goodies - goodies for gifts, goodies for your home, goodies that are just good to have. There is very little navigational rhyme or reason to the space, but what is so amazing is that the owner is the sweetest and finds real joy helping you find what you might be looking for. I took a quick scan around and didn't really see an area where I could find a fancy plate to place a cake. I decided to just go ahead and ask the owner if she had anything, and she led me to the back, to a beautiful gold plate that she knew of that was under a ton of other stuff. I would have never found it but she knew exactly where it was. It was perfect and very reasonably priced as well. While the shop is a bit of organized chaos, it's different and special and the owner is just a lovely person. I am so disappointed by the service received at this store. The owner followed my friend and I around as we sifted through the congested aisles. As you walk around, there are MANY signs displaying her obvious distrust for those who enter. Apparently, many people have stolen from her and phrases such as "God is watching, karma will get you" are on display throughout the store. We thought nothing of it since we intended to pay for anything we may have liked. I parked my stroller in the front of the store with a food bag because the aisles are too small and filled with items. Sadly, the bag contained my friend's wallet and phone. Had the owner been paying attention to her store instead of walking behind my friend and I who were planning to purchase some books and sage (which I did patronize since it's a small business), the ACTUAL thief stole my friends wallet off the back of the stroller. We never blamed the owner despite her distasteful comments like "you should have had your wallet on you" "it's not my fault", etc. it's the the principle that you are upset about people stealing from you when you do not have any cameras. After realizing she could not even help herself, she would clearly not be able to help us. We filed a police report and she barged into the conversation just to hell herself. Again repeating, "it's not my fault, they should have had their wallet". Needless to say, she will never get my business again. I feel profiled and that's a terrible feeling when you spend money at a business regardless of the size. read more

I love the variety of merchandise in this store. It's a great place to find unique gifts. Jewelry, tschochkes, socks, soaps, knickknacks, bottle stoppers, lotions, wall decor, change purses, notebooks, and more. A little bit pricey, but the items are of good quality. Owner Deniz has been helpful at times; on some occasions I have found her a bit pushy, trying to sell me things I wasn't interested in buying and being unpleasant when I said I was just browsing. I adore this quirky shop filled with random treasures. Crystals, plates, stationary, clothing, jewelry, books, art apparel, collectibles...all with a Turkish flair and a kind smile the second you walk in. Denise is an absolute doll and explains the products to you (even extending knowledge about crystals) and her attitude never changes! Seriously. I've come here on multiple occasions to either check out the products or make purchases...and she is ALWAYS nice. It's amazing! My boyfriend and I were wandering around the Farmer's Market today and decided to stop into Magic Carpet to browse. We looked around the whole store and as we were getting ready to leave, the owner, Denise, came up to my boyfriend asking him what his favorite sports team was. At first, it just seemed like she was trying to be friendly, so he engaged in conversation with her and said he didn't really follow sports. In response she called him a "bad boy" and smacked his butt, which made me very uncomfortable. Neither of us commented on that, partly because we were trying to be polite, partly because in the moment we weren't really sure what was going on and were caught by surprise. She then proceeded to grab his arm and slowly examine his sleeve tattoo up-close, turning his arm this way and that so she could see all of it, from the shoulder down. After that, we briefly continued our odd and uncomfortable conversation, during which she barely addressed me, and then left. When we got home, I realized that what had happened was completely inappropriate and I was furious. Maybe I didn't say anything because she's my elder, but that was wrong and I should've confronted her right there. That a storeowner would sexually harass and grab one of her customers and a complete stranger is not okay. She completely objectified him in front of me and other customers in the store. I read all the other reviews of this place, and the negative ones either say that she spoke to people inappropriately or that she racially stereotyped and profiled black customers, such as my boyfriend. I will definitely not be returning here again. There are many other great antique stores in DC that I will gladly give my money to over hers. read more

She was trolling for a competing business and has done so in the past. Not only is this shop a gem in the Takoma Park business district but Deniz is a treasure as a long time resident. She has spent years building up a successful business and offers such a wide variety of merchandise at very affordable prices, it is a joy and a wonderful experience to shop there. No matter the occasion , birthday, graduation, Christmas you can find the perfect gift there and naturally something for yourself. Denise is absolutely incredible. She has the most amazing collection of unique gift and home decor items. This is one of my favorite stores to frequent and find special gifts. She's so very warm and kind to everyone who enters her store. I read a review about someone saying that she is prejudice and touched a customer inappropriately. That's literally unbelievable. I've known her and been a customer for over 7 years. There's not a prejudice bone in her body, and I'm saying this as a person of color. This summer, I purchased several items from this store and as I was standing at the register, my coat knocked over a headband from a display right next to me. The owner asked if I wanted it and I said no, I just knocked it over. She said "it fell out of your coat." I can understand a shop owner being wary of theft, but the item that fell was right next to me, and my coat was hanging over my arm (in a shop so full of stuff you can barely move), so I did not appreciate the accusation. I let it go, though, and bought my items. I then went to the shop next-door and a few minutes later the owner of Magic Carpet followed me in, and in front of everyone there, and asked if I had taken an earring that she can't find. I said I didn't take anything from her store and she continued to question me. The owner of the shop I was in was shocked, and said she was sorry I was treated that way. I even went back with my children to try to her find the earring. The owner was rude and condescending. After reading other reviews, I saw I am not the only person this woman had treated poorly. It's my first place to go to when I need something special ... and affordable. The owner (Denise?) is fabulous. She has a great sense of style that shows in what she chooses to sell at her shop. It's chock full of stuff, so take your time in the store and don't miss the back room where she has furniture, Turkish pillows and kilim rugs (yes, I have a few of those around my home). Ran into this shop by accident. Went looking for S&A beads. Magic carpet owner was outside cleaning her store front pieces so I asked her about S&A beads. Found out they relocated and are not yet open. So she invited me into her shop since she also had what I was looking for- a crystal pendulum. The shop owners energy is soooo magnetic. She is such a sweet women and turned me into a life time customer. Not only was she awesome her shop is filled with amazing trinkets, gifts and gemstones. I used to like this place, and I still like the things in it. But on my last visit, I became very offended by the service provided by the owner. I'm African-American and I feel that I was treated as though she couldn't trust me and my younger sisters in her store. I discovered this wonderful shop a couple of years ago, when I was focusing on Small Saturday. What a great find! Stuffed to the ceiling with unique delights, some are small trinkets, but some are authentic, one-of-a-kind items that make "the perfect gift". Now I do almost all of my holiday shopping there so that I know my gifts are unique and have the personal meaning I want. This year I found beautiful pillow coverings made from authentic oriental carpets, lovely hand-made bracelets with tumbled stones and a gorgeous, mosaic-inlay platter! The owner, Deniz, is from Turkey (Istanbul, I think) and is so sweet and nice and helpful. I love to shop at a small business like this in my community.
