I knew nothing about this place before arriving so I had absolutely no expectations. Five minutes into our tour, I realized that this place is gold. We were led through aisles and aisles and aisles of gently used donated materials. Here is a "short" list of some of the things that MFTA has for you. -Paper, zippers, beads, books, playbills, programs, posters, wood, full mannequin bodies and mannequin body parts, travel sized containers, glass containers, spools of thread, fabric, leather scraps, computers, printers, binders, tables, plastic containers, metal parts, labels....the list goes on for days. What's the catch?!? Not much actually. You do need a membership to reap the benefits, but if you are a teacher at a public school or work for a non-profit, everything is FREE! And don't you dare think that after a few teachers fill up cartloads of materials that you missed your chance. This place is enormous and donations are consistently flowing through their doors. Once you've filled up your cart (or your 5 carts), your only form of payment is a thank you. MFTA asks that you send a thank you to each company that you've "purchased" from. Just a few donors that Omar (our enthusiastic & informative tour guide) mentioned were Google, Macy's and Disney. Wait artists, there is more! If you create any form of art using MFTA's materials, they have a studio for you to work in right next to their warehouse of materials. Once your piece is complete, they will even showcase your work in their gallery. I don't know about you, but I'm amazed. Set up a school trip, rent a uhaul to stock up on supplies or just grab your toothbrush and move in. MFTA is an A+ in my book.

The space is the basic "white cube", and the perfect size for viewing work- not a walk in closet with paintings thrown on the wall, nor is it a too large, impersonal garage that makes the work seem small and unimportant. The work, itself, is important, and most notably- FUN! Brightly painted, screen-printed, collaged images, mostly inspired by design, graffiti, cartoons, pop culture and fantasy. Typically all the work, at least that I have seen, is done by local, up and coming Manhattan or Brooklyn artists, which makes the work actually affordable! (Please take note, all you young collectors out there!) The staff is very helpful, hip and friendly- not at all exuding the pretentiousness of a Chelsea gallery. Also, the artists tend to actually show up at their openings! At the openings, there are usually, as to be expected, the schmooze-y free wine and/or beer for all gallery goers. However, they have usually have unique, interactive art events such as screen printing parties with Goldmine Shithouse, one of their very talented art collectives, where you can have any item (i.e. t-shirt, tote bag, old shoe, etc) screen printed for $5 while you stand around boozing and schmoozing to loud music. The monthly gallery openings are usually cool/theme parties - either silly day-glo candy, BBQs, etc. - that bring the spirit of the artwork on the walls to life. As for the framing, after getting completely gouged at a place in Chelsea for a sub-par framing job, I was desparate to find a place that did good work and didn't charge me an arm & a leg! McCaig-Welles is the place! Not only do they offer great prices, but they take time with you to choose the right frame style, size, color, etc. They'll also offer interesting ideas to make your framed item really stand out (in my case, it was a crazy-cute patchwork skirt from my childhood - now that was an interesting Mother's Day gift!). The results are always fantastic, and without a long waiting period. I won't go anywhere else!

((3.75 stars))…read more small vintage-ish store parked on Ludlow Street. the store's vibes are that of the newer crop of Lower East aside vintage stores popping up throughout the neighborhood. the store is well-maintained and feels comfy like a post-college living room with random pop culture items here and there. merchandise is neatly arranged on racks. the store is pretty airy despite its size. there's a mix of denim, Ts, sweaters, long sleeves, jackets and more. stopped by here a week or two ago--there was still a good amount of heavier outdoor jackets like Carhartts and such. the store's selection of clothes is curated to "work" together in terms of looks, but the vintage items are on the newer / more recent side and wouldn't register as true "vintage" but its all a matter of taste and preference. there are change rooms in the back. didn't really interact who seem fairly chill. store was kinda sleepy when i stopped by but it was on a weekday evening.

Despite the space name "house garden" it is really used as a outdoor art gallery enclosed by a wrought iron fence that is locked. Visitors can only enjoy the viewing behind the wrought iron fence. This space bears a striking resemblance of usage for art sculptures as Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Although the art pieces are no contender for any award wining prize or title, I prefer renown quality artists Tom Otterness and John Seward Johnson II.

I wonder why it never occurred to me. They have a plethora of Metrocard Art currently on display, now that the Metrocard has become (or is becoming) extinct. Really impressive art pieces on view using the Metrocard motif in many very creative and beautiful ways. For purchase there's plenty of MTA transit merch too. Take a visit if you can. A small free New York Transit museum located in Grand Central Terminal. I was walking around and…read moreshowing people the inside of Grand Central where we so happened to stumble upon this store. Inside, a few artists shared their love for the Metro and designed some cool dresses with Metro cards. Also, there were photographs on the walls along the way. It is a small museum and a small store where you can buy things related to New York and the Metro. I bought a baby's bib and a pack of cards designed to look like Metro Cards for a friend.
