I like it here and started giving Janey Lovin. Julie is amazing!…read more We brought our 5 year old lab to get a nail trim. He was a bit anxious, wouldn't sit still, and would smell Julie's hand and back away. After a couple minutes, I was worried it wouldn't work out. But, Julie made it happen! Eventually, he was coming to her and he was even licking her face mask. She trimmed all his nails and was careful to not trim too much so his nerve endings weren't touched. She was very sweet and I was very impressed by her ability to get the job done given how uncooperative he was at first. I definitely recommend La Pooch!

Never okay of course, but it's a pet store and I imagine it's happened before. The owner was so horrible. Instead of making me aware and allowing me to clean it and pay for the pile of stuff I had - he came out from behind the counter slurring his words, accusing us of this being the second time (we'd never seen this man before in my life and I've only been on the store twice prior) and wouldn't stop mumbling about how awful we were. He had that blacked out drunk look in his eyes where he was staring right through you. It was extremely uncomfortable. We put our stuff down and left. I'm not justifying my dogs actions but if you can't handle a dog having an accident in a pet store then you probably shouldn't own one - or don't allow pets in.

From the boutique and high quality toys, homemade treats, and even outfits this store blows any of the "big box" pet stores out of the water. The selection of things range from the necessary to the completely ridiculously unnecessary which is hilarious and I loved seeing some of the items they carried. However, with this kind of high quality often comes a high price. While the prices are not outrageous they will be slightly higher than your average pet store and that fortunately for us isn't a consideration as our little girl is treated as most parents treat their children. You can expect about a 10-15% difference in price with a much higher quality than you'd typically experience (especially in the treats case). The owner was a pleasure to chat with and shared all of his stories of past and current dogs which was awesome to hear about. He also told us about the history of the shop and what drove them to open it. These are good people just trying to fill a niche that wasn't covered previously when they opened their doors, and all three of us will gladly walk through those doors again and again whenever we find ourselves in the Portsmouth area :) Thanks again for the great conversation and Ruby says the treats were delicious!
