Server got an attitude when asked why she/owner/kitchen staff weren't wearing masks. Our party of 4 had placed our drink orders, we were outside, and we should have left but didn't. We did ask the server to stand further away from the table but that didn't get us much cooperation. Inside the restaurant the owner says they're social distancing but the tables are less than 5' apart and many patrons didn't wear masks. Won't go back, ever. read more

1 star due to customer service, not about the food. We showed up 15 min before closing with the intent of grabbing something quick to go (not eat in). People were eating outside, but the door was locked. The server outside said, "We closed at 2:30." I said, "Yes, it's 2:15 now." She promptly turned around without any further explanation and ignored us (2 adults with little ones in tow, including one in an infant carrier). Very pretty place and open and bright. There were three of us for lunch and it was after the typical lunch time so it wasn't very busy. We asked for 2 teas and a water and when they were delivered by our waitress she put them all on the corner of the table next to me instead of in front of the person who ordered that drink. Weird and lazy!! Apparently they use cloves in their tea and for people who don't care for the taste of cloves in their tea it was an unpleasant surprise. Ok changed out to soda. We placed our order and asked for silverware. Again delivered to the corner of the table next to me for distribution. Mom ordered tomato soup. It was ok but on the salty side. I ordered the roast beef and brie on a croissant. It was good but the RB had no flavor and the croissant was on the small side and falling apart after being cut in the kitchen. I also ordered the Brunswick stew. A good soup on the sweet side but a much watery consistency than I've had in the past. Hubby ordered a turkey sandwich large size. However lazy waitress never informed hubby that they no longer have the large size croissants so he ended up with the smaller croissant cut in half with an additional half. Due to the size of these cut sandwiches they were falling apart before you took your second bite. Had lunch here in my continuous search for great places to eat in the sand hills and I regretfully say it won't make my FAVORITES list. It was just an ok place, with ok food. We arrived at the tail of lunch hours, so that may explain the dismissive attitude of our server....or maybe not. I figure each customer should receive the same treatment regardless if they dine at the beginning or at the end of the server's shift. The other staff seemed nicer though. So it could have been just that one waitress. The restaurant has a small shop up front giving u the impression that they make and sell homemade old fashion goods, although disappointingly, the products are not made in house but purchased and not even hand crafted...with the exception of mustard which is kept hidden in the fridge to avoid spoilage and IS made at the restaurant. read more

Several co-workers were ordering take out for lunch, I ordered the Mediterranean Salad. For $8.50 I expected a great salad, but it was nothing special. Skimpy on the lettuce and cucumber, small amount of sliced tomato, unseasoned small piece of chicken sitting on top, dressing heavy on the vinegar. It was disappointing, and I was hungry again an hour later. Only one star for the big price and small portions with little flavor. Everyone who saw it agreed it wasn't worth the price. read more

While every other small business restaurant struggles to survive and works hard to show its customers that their health and safety is a top priority by putting strict safety protocols into place, the Market Place Restaurant must feel their food is so good that people will risk possibly being exposed to the coronavirus because the restaurant does not feel the need to adhere to the executive order of wearing masks. News to Market Place: there are plenty of places to eat in the area that are really good or even better, that are showing customers that they want to be a part of the solution to keeping the virus under control, that customers' health comes first and that they are grateful for their business. I don't know why the Market Place has chosen not to make masks mandatory for the safety of employees and customers, but if it's about government overreach, it shouldn't be. It's common sense. We are in the middle of a pandemic. Your servers go from one table of customers to another for hours each day. During that time, they are standing over customers while talking, a perfect way to spread the virus. (Not only is there no mask wearing, but servers came within two feet of me when approaching for our drink order and then when asked to keep distance moved out to about four feet). You have (or had) plenty of older customers that like to go out to eat now that dining in is allowed. How hard is it to show that you care and that you want their business than the simple act of putting on a face covering while, at the very least, taking their order and serving them? read more

I'm surprised at all the reviews of bad service. I thought the service was actually the best part of our lunch. We happened upon this place after a brief grocery stop at Lowes Foods. Both of us had a 1/2 sandwich and soup. Yes the portions were on the small side for $8.50 but it really hit the spot. I had the Wisconsin cheese soup and tuna salad sandwich with chips. My friend had the roasted red pepper soup special and pimento cheese sandwich, both were tasty. Place is really cute. Lots of good dessert and coffee options. We got a free cookie with Yelp checkin and they were nice enough to let me upgrade to a different cookie. The service was awesome. Our tea never got below 2/3 full, constantly refilled. Asked if we needed anything multiple times. Server asked how we had happened to come in and was genuinely interested in our response. Owner apologized for charging me too much for the free cookie and handed me $1 which was slightly more than I was owed. Very good service. read more

I used to frequent this restaurant at it's old location, next to Carolina Eye, and always loved it. They had the best soups and sandwiches. This new location is just to far now, but I happened to be in that area and decided to check it out. That was my mistake. It isn't what it used to be. Smaller portions, higher prices, ruder staff. I've been to their old location years ago and heard they moved so I thought I'd check it out while in town. The new place is nicely done, much bigger and more open with lots of windows. The friends I went with go here frequently and raved about the cheddar cheese soup and the tuna salad on a croissant, so I went with the soup/salad lunch combination to experience both. The food was very tasty. The soup was a bit thinner than most cheddar cheese soups I've had but still very flavorful. However, I was disappointed in the quantity. I was hungry when I left, which is a shame for the price of the meal. I didn't read the menu carefully when I ordered the iced tea which is spiced - something I don't care for. I swapped it out for a Coke. What I got what a small glass of ice with a few gulps of Code for $2.25. Never saw the waitress again after she brought it and I was not happy about it. Our server was very inattentive, made mistakes and was generally absent even though I could see her behind the counter doing nothing. When I went to pay the check I had to wait a long time while the cashier finished a lengthy conversation with two patrons who were leaving. I can appreciate having rapport with the customers, but the wait was borderline rude to me. Based on this experience I won't be in rush to come back. read more
