I was traveling through the area and wanted some soul food and found Pete's and old fashion diner where they know every one by name. Well that's the good part of this review. I ordered chicken livers with grilled onions and gravy and I got raw onions thrown on as an after thought. They did offer to remake them but I had already been waiting a while so I asked for gravy on the side which had onions it...go figure. Well they didn't have much flavor and neither did the cabbage. The fried green beans were just ok as well. I like the hush puppies and the cake the most. My meal was $20 and I tossed all but the cake and hush puppies. read more

Have been a customer of Pete's for years. Have eaten at the restaurant many times. Tonight though, only 1/2 of the restaurant was open for seating, not overcrowded at all. Took what seemed like forever for our food to come out , only in separate portions. Entree came out 1st , followed by 2 additional trips to get all of the sides, and to get all of the food we ordered. Portion size and quality were both very poor. Addressed it with 2 different waitresses, and the cashier before we left. None of them showed any concerns, or notified the manager. After departing the restaurant, I called and spoke with the manager Matthew , who said give him a chance to make it right. I did not come in for a free meal. So I declined. What I would suggest is training the kitchen , wait staff , and cashier to give more concern to a customers concerns about the meal they just ordered and are paying good money for, and if not to go ahead and get the manager involved so they don't leave felling disappointed. Very clean and very well run, never have had anything but an excellent southern style meal and southern hospitality. If it's good enough for FNC it's good enough for me. This establishment was featured on Fox News' segment 'Fox & Friends Weekend' with Pete Hegseth a few years ago. I was excited to try it while I was in town, so I stopped in for breakfast this past weekend. It is a local family diner with friendly staff and reasonable prices. I ordered a western omelet, home fries, and white toast with sweet tea. One of the best diner omelets I've had. And nothing beats NC sweet tea! Very comfortable atmosphere. We stopped here for dinner on a whim as we passed through town - so happy we stopped. Grilled hamburger steak and pizza were great. Place was busy and we got our food quickly. After a long trip and checking into our bed and breakfast, we came here. They had 2 specials on the wall, that we both ordered. it's a pretty inexpensive restaurant. However, the chicken and dumplings had mostly dumplings and 2 small pcs of chicken. My husbands order, looked like 2 cans of Chef Boyardee. Perhaps the other menu items are terrific. But for us, we will pass on this restaurant, the next time we are in the area. read more

Exactly what you expect from a small diner. (...but it's not really a small diner - TONS of seating!) We had the biscuits & gravy - yum! Biscuits were perfect, as was the sausage gravy. Corned beef has was a bit pricy for the small amount you get ($5.99 for about 3/4 cup) - I wish it had been crisped up a little before serving. Large menu to choose from. We got here at 1:00 on a Saturday afternoon- about 8 tables had customers, all other tables still had dirty dishes from customers who had left; only two tables had no dishes, but the tables were still dirty. This place is a hidden gem. They got somebody's grandma working in the kitchen cause the food was elegant and expertly made. The star of our meal was the clam chowder! It was so good we each had a big bowl and then bought bowls to go so we could eat some later. The clam meat was so tender and fresh. The soup tasted like we were at the beach. My daughter got the all you can eat flounder and I was sad because she got full on the clam chowder. Next time we will order the chowder to go again and just eat the all you can eat flounder at the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the service was amazing even though we showed up about an hour before closing. In Raleigh, I would never. But in Carthage, NC? I found professional work ethic with expertly prepared American cuisine. Love this place. 100% recommend. Oh, and the fried pickles were ridiculous, so good. The All You Can Eat baby flounder is on point! Replenishment of the baby flounder was slow but the taste made up for it. The tartar sauce needs work though... shouldn't be runny. Service could be more attentive. read more

Our visit here two Saturday mornings ago for breakfast was quite a let down. Not the usual Pete's experience by any means. Service wasn't great like it used to be. My country ham was the size of a 59 cent piece. Grits were the consistency of gravy. Bacon was paper thin and flavorless. The serving sizes were a third what we are used too from Pete's. I'm not sure what the problem was but I surely hope it was a temporary fluke. read more

Great little diner/ restaurant in North Carolina. Breakfast specials are really a great bargain. 2 eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and toast or biscuits of $6.00 . That is unheard of in this day and age. Service friendly and fast. Place was packed with cars outside (always a good sign) It seems the lunch and dinner offerings are a really great and varied choice. Went there with a group of 9 for a senior's lunch bunch. Inside or outside, it's not fancy, but bright, clean and cheery. The staff was friendly and efficient. As each ordered she gave us our copy of the bill to avoid any confusion on check out, great idea. I ordered Smothered Pork chops w/ 2 sides. They were so tender my fork was sufficient, I barely used the knife to cut them! The sliced pickled beets were yummy and you don't see them on menus very often! I ordered hush puppies but was told that they were a bread, so I also got broccoli. I couldn't eat it all, so the second pork chop made a nice lunch the next day. Everyone was happy with their orders, which ranged from breakfast to burgers to chicken and dumplings! It was well worth the 40 minute drive from Sanford! Food was not good! Mediocre at best. Meatloaf and hamburger was made with something other than beef and very dry. Service was terrible, first server was inconvenienced that I asked for coffee, second server complained we ordered too much and never came back with refills. Workers were yelling to each other across the restaurant. Don't waste your time. read more

I took my parents in-law and wife out for a real country breakfast. When you enter you find your seating. I found the dining room to be spacious, ample lighting and clean. The dining room was divided into two sections, which offered different seating options of booths, tables and counter eating. The waitstaff was extremely friendly and customer focused. I love the occasional "hun" and "sweetie", that sealed it for me, these are my kind of folk. I ordered a meat lover's omelette, home fries. biscuit and coffee. The food was served hot and it seemed right after we ordered it. The omelette was just like mama would have make it, delicious and the home fries were, what can I say home fries. But, those biscuits were beyond wonderful, light and fluffy with a thin crust, so savory. I wouldn't share any of it. The waitstaff was so proactive in the customer meal experience that my coffee cup never saw empty and that to me is quality service. The dishes were cleared and we were able to sit a spell enjoying some quality family time. I could honestly say that this is the eating gem of Carthage North Carolina. After many months of not eating here, we decided to try it again. The food was very good. Prices are very reasonable. I had the bbq chicken and my wife had the steak wrap. Both were excellent. Glad to see the restaurant has returned to being a great place to eat. We will be returning on a regular basis. read more

Great food and great service are always dished up at this local joint. The portions are big and the prices are fair.

My wife and I stopped in tonight and we each ordered the flounder and oyster dinner. We waited about 15 minutes before our drink order was taken. Okay, sometimes you just get busy. I understand that. Our meal came out shortly thereafter. It was fair--not great, but okay. We waited for refills on our drinks, but no one ever came back to check on us. My wife did not eat much and wanted a box to take it home. Again, NO.ONE ever stopped at our table. I finally got up and walked to the counter and got a box myself. It wouldn't have been too bad but the table near us had a waitress stopping by several times. The place was not that busy. I'm very disappointed! Will we go back? Pete's isn't too bad. We were tired from being on the road from traveling all day and we were just glad to be able to sit down in a seat other than a car seat. This place is down home mom & pop style staff, environment and food. I'm 48 and I was the second youngest person there...not an issue but just letting you know how it is. I got their 3 piece chicken plate and it was decent. My main gripe was my 3rd piece was some tiny wing that hardly had any meat or even worth plating...but they have to get rid of them somehow. My son got their Ruben but the bread fell apart as it didn't seem toasted well and it just turned into a sloppy mess. The sweet tea was decent and their lemon meringue pie wasn't bad either. In the future, I'll probably keep driving or try the Pizza Hut in the shared parking lot. read more

We had been out all day visiting all the race shops and were looking for some really good food and we found it here. My fried chicken was awesome and my said the salmon patties were too. The service was equally awesome, I haven't had service this good in quite sometime. The dessert was very good, I had the coconut cream pie and my wife had the carrot cake, we would recommend both. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would. It was almost a 5 star, but the fries were a little under cooked. If your in the area this is a must try, food was very, very good. We went back a few days later for breakfast, it was okay, but I don't know if I would back again for it. Definitely dinner, but not breakfast. Good home cooked food!! They even have real fried squash and okra and the Fried Chicken is awesome!! They serve a variety of foods, including seafood, steak, and Italian food.
