Pretty good, but we think it was overhyped. Tried the haddock and cod. We preferred the cod. The curry sauce is a must. My uncle who is celiac very much appreciated the gluten-free version. Tasted the same to us.

The fish is so good and the bread is also delicious!! I love this place! The service is awesome too. It is a very small store but I will come back again.

Fried Cod, Chips - Mushy Peas, Tartar, Curry Sauce (£11.50)

First fish and chips here in London and apparently this is one of the most icomic places. Came on Christmas Eve afternoon for mid lunch and was surprised to find that there was no seating. They lady told us that most people have reservations and even then there was a bit of a wait. We ordered the Fried Cod, Chips - Mushy Peas, Tartar, Curry Sauce (£11.50). I felt like the fish itself was fried to perfection with its perfectly tender meat but it lacked a lot of flavor which was supposed to be gotten through the sauces. The tartar sauce, I thought, went better with the chips but then again it was hard to grab the sauce as chips were very bulky. Also the chips weren't as crispy as I thought. The peas I thought worked better with the curry sauce and that's how I mainly ate it. Not bad for £11.50 though. Given that this is one of London's best, I think it's definitely worth to try but maybe only once.

Just an FYI, this restaurant is shut down. The sign is scratched off the door and the place is empty. (Only a 1 star because it makes you pick one)

All them chips!!!! Chip is the word!!! Since I loved their other spot in Mayfair, naturally I had to try this too!! My hotel in Mayfair isn't too far from here so I walked to this. It was a tiny cute, charming m, popular spot!! And I came last month, it was still cold, windy and rainy!! It's just so warm to step inside this place. And that divine food smell! Naturally, they are known for having the best chips!! Beer battered chips! But they have other stuff too. The crab salad was my absolute favorite followed by their chips, tartare and mushy peas! Those peas were magic. Food~ everything is amazing!! The blood pudding fritters, my beautiful crab salad, the massive fish and chips. The champagne! The latte. The mushy peas. They also have oysters too. My favorite though: the crab salad! It was crab 3 ways! So beautiful! Light! Tasty! Flavorful! Just divine!! Sadly, I stayed here for a week and came before my train to Paris! Almost didn't make it with traffic. But it was so worth the visit too :)

Classic Fish n' Chips (cod version) w/ curry sauce as the option -- it comes also with mushy peas and tartar sauce.

My first, official fish 'n chips experience was at The Mayfair Chippy! It was definitely a great dish, I tried so hard to finish everything but there was just soooo much! I did finish at least the fish though, because let's be honest, that's the most expensive part and my dad taught me well. I ordered the Fish 'n Chip Special (cod) that comes with tartar sauce, mushy peas, and a choice of another sauce, which I chose the curry sauce (forgot what the other option was). In the end, everything tasted great! What made it even better was I ordered a beer (I ordered the Frontier craft) to sip while eating it. What's better than good ol' Fish 'n Chips AND beer!?!? I usually alternated between dipping my fish into the tartar sauce and the curry sauce--both were incredible. However, I was not a big fan of the mushy peas even though others in my party really enjoyed it. I wonder if it's an acquired taste. No biggie though because mushy peas is a London thing and you're hoping to get a full-London experience. For anyone hoping to get their first fish 'n chips experience, The Mayfair Chippy is a great place to start. It turns out that they have other branches around London. Luckily, the branch I ate at had plenty of seating. Note: There's something on the menu called "scraps" and it's free. It's mainly just fried "extra bits of batter" from the fryer. Lol.

I enjoyed a nice solo dinner at the Mayfair Chippy. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and experience. The waiter was nice and very attentive. I ordered the cod and chips. You have to order a la carte which I found interesting. It came with one long big piece of cod. I'm not a huge fan of beer batter, but that seems to be the norm for the area. I wish it had been a tad less greasy but it wasn't too bad. The chips were really thick and I found myself not able to finish them at all. I then ordered the warm chocolate pudding. It came with salted caramel ice cream and toffee pieces. Overall, it was presented beautifully and it was pretty good. Extremely rich and the center was molten. I can't say I was blown away by dinner or dessert but I did enjoy it. If I could give another half star, I would.

It was late on a Sunday evening and I was dead from a previous night of partying. I decided to get something close to my hotel that would satisfy the late night greasy food craving, Enter the Mayfair Chippy. It's a no frills atmosphere but well tended to by the staff who were superb. I went with the Mayfair classic fish and chips. Not being from the UK, I do enjoy a "fish fry" from the US so I had high expectations on this famous dish. This place delivered.... delicious and cooked to perfection (I chose the haddock over cod). My friend had the crab burger which was also phenomenal. Price cannot be beat for the quality, best fish and chips I had in London!

Visited The Mayfair Chippy two times during our week-long visit to London. Both times I ordered the fish-n-chips and my wife and I think they're superb. The portion of fish is huge slab of golden-fried haddock deliciousness. The accompanying chips (French fries) were likewise very good, thick-cut fries verging on dinner fries proportions. The inside of the fries were hot and fluffy. Really nice. I ordered their signature dish, which included three sauces: tartar, mashed peas, and a mild curry sauce. My wife ordered the same, substituting a beef gravy for the curry. I used her beef gravy as a dipping sauce for some of my chips, though! Our server was a happy, energetic woman to delivered our meals quickly. She was super personable. Being a business district restaurant, their hours are limited to Monday through Friday, unfortunately. It's really not far from the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, so the weekend tourists will miss out, sadly. It's also a very pricey basket of goodness, too, owing to the great ingredients, preparation, and its location in London, which has generally high restaurant prices across the board, like New York, for instance.

This is my go-to London business trip fish and chip experience. I love EVERYTHING about this place. I have been a regular this past year. I have tried almost the entire menu. Everything is delicious. Except for their coleslaw. It just wasn't my thing. Too dry, and out of the norm. I just didn't find it tasty. I love that they have gluten and vegan free options. Their fish tastes fresh and is not heavy and overwhelmingly oily like some spots. I don't have a gut ache later in the evening after eating here. They have a great gin and wine selection. Save room because their desserts are delicious. They change seasonally. They even make a great espresso martini. You can also order to takeaway.

Who doesn't love some good fish n chips?? It was a rainy day today in soggy old London so we decided to get some comfort food to warm us up, and Mayfair didn't disappoint. We started with the black pudding and then went straight into the fish n chips, we both got the Mayfair classic (his made with haddock, hers with cod), what a delight! Nice and crispy on the outside and succulent and juicy on the inside. Plus the mushy pees for the win. A+

This is a review of their take away. I stayed at the Indigo next door and had been passing by all week. Can't leave London without having fish and chips, am I right? Ordered a fish and chip combo, specifically haddock as I wanted to try it. The large is a good meal for one or one and a half. As it was, shared it with the wife and we were both quite satisfied when we were done. Forgot to get malted vinegar, which is a foul I know but shouldn't they have given it to me automatically? Double foul! The chips, or fries as we Americans would call them, were plentiful and appeared hand cut. I liked the small pieces that were crisp. The larger ones did get a little soggy but were good for dipping in the curry sauce. The Curry sauce was on the sweeter side and reminded me of Japanese style curry. The combo came with mushy peas which were...idk not sure if I am a great judge of mushy peas but it seemed a tad on the drier side. These were the consistency of mashed potatoes. The tartar sauce was good, creamy and a bit tart . I just wish they gave a bit more as the fish was large and I like a lot of tartar sauce. If you're like me I dip my chips in the tartar sometimes too, don't judge me!! Had an order of the fried oysters. These were a little puny, poor little guys, but quite tasty. I'll need a few more next time, they looked lonely in the container all by themselves. This is where the extra tartar sauce would have been epic...oh well . Lastly, needed some fiber so had a side of their slaw, no, mushy peas don't count as fiber...pfft. The slaw, no "cole" to be found anywhere, was refreshing and tart. British people must like tart flavors. Overall thought it was a good meal and would recommend. By the way for my fellow yanks, here are a few tips/translations. Pleice - a flat fish sort of like a small flounder, close enough. Chip Butty - This is literally a french fry sandwich, seriously!! Battered Wally - read fried pickle...lol...these Brits crack me up!

I didn't have to look at the menu at the counter - I simply said "fish and chips" please. I took a seat outside and waited for my delectables to arrive. The time seemed like plank/burpee minutes, but in reality the food came out relatively quick. When I took my first bite / it was mission accomplished. Each bite was all I wanted and more. The fish and chips were fabulous - I ended up unable to finish due to the size of the meal. The atmosphere was pretty laid back and sitting outside was somewhat relaxing. If you're anywhere in the area, I highly recommend this place!

It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, but somehow after a six minute wait they found space for us in the back room. 1950s American music played throughout the place, with posters and records of that time period to boot. I assume it's because they opened in 1952 and they have been trapped in time since. The servers were all really nice and gave us cute knotted bendy straws. So the main event. We got the fish and chips of course. The cod and haddock tasted the same but the only noticeable difference to us was that the haddock had a dark layer of skin under the fried layer. Cook's in Menlo Park, CA was slightly better, but Poppies' was still outstanding. We also had the mushy peas to make sure we had mushy peas while in Britain, but they were nothing to write home about. (I think I'm just not a mushy peas fan.) We all had two obligatory spoonfuls and went back to the fish. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Apparently it arrives frozen from some dessert place. We could have used more than a half scoop of melted vanilla ice cream, but overall it was REALLY good. The daughter loved it and insisted she have sticky toffee pudding for her birthday five months later. We had STP three times in a week during our trip and Poppies was maybe slightly better than the rest. In 2017, 5 stars. A visit to Poppies during our 2024 visit, seven years later was a must. This time we sat outside to be COVID cautious on the only outdoor seating available - three sporting even style wooden chairs that fold in when not occupied. (More recent photos show that they've been replaced by benches.) The fish and chips this time was fine but again not better than Cook's. Yes, California might have the edge over an English chippie. Based on my notes we had all haddock which was a good choice. I noticed this time that the sticky toffee pudding was taken out of the fridge and microwaved but it was still yummy. But overall this visit I'd have to give it 4 stars.

Upon arriving, the Insight area was closed for any new customers. It being almost 930 I could understand somewhat. But in my concern, the worker that took my order said that I could sit outside. I put in my order set up the little bench outside and waited inside for my order to finish. My order finished at 9:30. I grabbed my drink. I grabbed my napkin. My fork went to sit outside and they had locked the bench down. I went back inside asking if they could unlock the bench cause there was still 30 minutes left. The workers there told me they could not unlock it because they need to be finished at 10 o'clock. I told them it would only take me 15 minutes or less to eat and they said no I'm sorry we will not unlock the bench. I ended up walking down the street ate the food as I walked as there was nowhere to sit. The service was really bad in the customer service absolutely unacceptable. My meal was €23 and I ended up eating it cold because there was nowhere to sit. I definitely will not be going back to this place and I highly suggest you do not go to this place if it's 30 minutes before closing and you're trying to eat somewhere where you could sit down. I really hope that the owner reads this and explains to their workers if someone is there ready to eat 30 minutes before closing the average person takes about 15 minutes to eat and should be allowed to eat. One star and most of that is connected to poor customer service.
