Contrary to some of the experiences had by a few of the other reviewers, our experience was perfectly pleasant. I like the variety of drinks offered, especially a michelada which can be a rare find outside of a Mexican establishment. The one I had was flavored deliciously and had a nice spice to it. For my second beverage, I ordered a strawberry daiquiri which tasted as if it was assembled with fresh ingredients, rather than a shitty mix. I did not notice any fruit flies as mentioned in other reviews. If you're in the market, it's worth a visit. read more

While waiting for a carry out order at Laksa Nola on a very quiet, rainy Monday evening, I tried one of Mayhaw's "happy hour" old fashioned. The bartender was friendly and quickly made me one of the best $7 old fashioned I've ever had, served in an actual glass, which was a pleasant surprise. There prices are IMO on the low end for a bar in New Orleans. I've drank at a few and thought their prices were good. I got two beers (different types) that were so good. I started with the Cajun For Honey Ale which had a good flavor. Then I had the Black Lager / Great Raft "Reasonably Corrupt" which is a darkish and lovely beer. Decent, but sorely overpriced mimosa. The one in the picture cost me 9 dollars! Also the fruit flies in and around the area are a real turn off. I think the best thing about this spot are that I got this super cute free post card with my drink, and that the market itself is so cute and open. But in NOLA this definitely isn't the bang for your buck. (Makes sense. Some comments have called St. Roch the face of gentrification. They're right!) read more

My boyfriend and I had been in New Orleans for about an hour or so when we realized that we were extremely hungry from a day of traveling from Chicago. We were staying in the Marigny at St. Claude and Mandeville, and our Airbnb hosts recommended a spot nearby that they described as "a food hall with a lot of options and a bar." We were immediately like, "SIGN US UP." It took only a few minutes to walk to St. Roch Market, and it was so cute on the outside that we weren't 100% sure we were at the right place. However, once we were inside and saw all of our options, we knew that we ~were~ in the right place. Immediately we walked all the way to the back to The Mayhaw Bar to order a drink. We were greeted by the bartender, who I later learned had the same name as me (hi, Anna!), and were overjoyed to find we'd arrived right at the beginning of happy hour (which, at The Mayhaw Bar, is from 4-6pm). During happy hour, all drinks are $6 -- including cocktails! -- so I ordered something called the True Daquiri, which was served gorgeously and its color matched the aesthetic of St. Roch Market. I was blown away by how perfect it all was. We were also able to grab food from any of the places nearby and eat them while we drank at the bar, since it wasn't busy inside. A few nights later, when we came by after the Krewe of Chewbacchus parade, the bar area was very busy. I don't recommend eating at the bar when it's super busy inside the Market, just so others have room to go up and order. The bar used to have better wine selection, better pricing and less attitude. Not sure what the deal is but the wines they have on the affordable end just aren't good and the pricier ones aren't a whole lot better. I'm happy St. Roch has a bar that offers wine by the glass and bottle as well drankz but it comes at a price and attitude. I'll just carry a bottle in on my own from now on. read more

I see from other reviews that bartender likability here is hit or miss, and that's a shame (shame on the people hiring the nasty ones). The barkeep on our visit seemed at first unhappy to be serving yet another couple of Yankee tourists (he was certainly much more friendly to his pals who stopped by to chat). I did my best to jolly him up and by the end he was nicer to us. The good news is, this bar has an amazing selection of bottles and my French 75 cocktail was perfect. We also took advantage of their nice selection of chilled bottles of wine to have a Muscadet to go with our oysters and gumbo from down the hall. My goodness, one star from the sole previous reviewer? With one star, I expected to find SAE 30W served in a chipped glass smudged with lipstick. That didn't happen. This is a full bar with friendly service and some imaginative drinks, including some garnished with fresh fruit or herbs, and a nice selection of wine and beer on draft. This place would garner more stars in, say, NW Washington DC or Aspen Colorado, where the aesthetics (and prices!) would be more at home. We stopped in last week after a tour of the WWII Museum (also highly recommended). Overall our group really enjoyed the concept of the marketplace and we all found meals that worked well for us. The bar service - specifically Ben - was excellent. He was quick, friendly, and seemed to really enjoy being there. My partner asked his preference on beer A or beer B and Ben then asked what flavor profiles he was hoping for. Apparently neither A nor B were the best choice and he recommended C. We tried and loved it. Nice to see Ben take the extra step when he had an easy way out option. Also he makes a pretty decent old fashioned. Go for the food variety; linger a bit longer at the bar and enjoy the service. read more

Flies and fruit flies at the Mayhaw - RIDICULOUS. The bartender = black, possibly biracial, buzz cut. Her attitude was terrible. Her service was terrible. I was quite pleasant, but it mattered not. Whiskey Wednesdays - menu says half of all bourbon and whiskey drinks. Bartender tells me after I receive my ticket and after I asked--- it doesn't include their cocktails. I had the Peachy Keen (a bourbon drink). Flyer for Whiskey Wednesdays says ALL bourbon and whiskey drinks half off. I didn't fight it, signed and left her a minimal tip. If there were zero stars, I'd select that! The bar manager is rude & extremely unprofessional. My friend & I were looking at the menu when she snatched it right from in front of us & moved it to the other side as if we weren't even there! My friends & I came to study & ordered drinks afterwards. One of my classmates went to grab togo boxes from another vendor for our leftovers & conveniently stumbled upon the bar manager gossiping about us ordering multiple drinks. Surprisingly my classmate was standing right behind her in the line. Well it was 5 of us & thats why we ordered FIVE! I don't have the words to express how much I love The Mayhaw! Mannie the bartender is a beast! He's so knowledgeable about drinks. Has great customer service skills and knows when it's time for a refill. He's passionate about what he does and puts his heart into every single drink. The natural wine selections are on point and the cocktail menu is fabulous! They have some wines chilled so you can grab one out the cooler and take it on a midday picnic. Imagine you've been flying all afternoon and arrive in NOLA in the evening and head straight to St Roch market for awesome Korean @ T2 Streetfood or oysters @ Elysian. But you decide to get a cocktail at the back of the market. That's Mayhaw... You'll probably find it about 1/2 full, and like last night, there might even be (2) female bartenders 'working'. You'll probably find you are 3rd in the drink order line. Which makes it curious that one, tatt'd pierced bartender that must have a religious aversion to eye contact, is choosing to spend her time 1.5 hours before closing to polish & restock the cocktail glasses ... wt_____......? Had to wait 15min to get 2 cocktails. The (short, blonde) bartender that was crafting cocktails was engaging and nice, but I'd rather have a nice convo WITH a cocktail in my hand. I agree with some of the reviews that the service here is less than desirable, but I greatly enjoyed the happy hour special of five dollar cocktails. I had two of the happy hour cocktails and by the middle of my second one I was completely lit. The presentation was good and I enjoyed the flavor and the amount of alcohol that was in my drinks. While I would not come back here for drinks alone,I definitely will come back to the Mayhaw Bar for happy hour and to partake in happy hour at one of the other businesses in the market. read more

The counter was nice to sit at, the bartender gave zero cares about us. He takes a card while you're sitting in front of him....authorizes a payment. You pay cash (tell him you want to pay cash) and guess what he still authorizes a payment (on your card, and pockets the cash). He got a hefty tip For nothing that day. I've called the sketchy number shocker.... no call back, I even wrote my complaint of being charged twice on the square email...no call back. So I guess we payed twice to be treated like crap. Lesson learned. P. S. I'd rather see a butt crack than be charged twice for crappy service and one round of drinks. read more

Bartender had a serious attitude and seemed high. He didn't even deliver our drinks directly to us (I had to walk down and retrieve them), and then he dropped a glass. To top it all off, his butt crack was exposed every time he bent over. There are hundreds of other places to get a cocktail in New Orleans--without the attitude or poor service. read more

If I was reviewing this place 6 months ago I would have given it a higher rating that I'm giving it now. But, my last two visits here have been sub-par or worse. Up front, I loved this place from the time it opened until its recent downhill trend. I could order food from multiple vendors then sit at the bar and enjoy a drink as each of my food orders was ready. And of all of the food courts that have opened of late, St. Roch Market remains my favorite (although it's not as good as it has been). Where the Mayhaw has fallen off is its staff. There used to be friendly, talented bartenders who worked here. You know, the kind that actually wants to make good drinks quickly for the people who are ordering them while also engaging in kind conversation. Based on my last two visits I'd have to say that's not the way anymore. My first bad experience was on a weekday evening. We came for food and to have cocktails at the bar. Well, the bartender was actually able to serve us only one drink during the entire time we were there eating several dishes for dinner. She never made eye contact with us again other than to bring us our bill after we attempted to get refills. No such luck. By that time, we were ready to split even though we would have spent more $ with them if they had just been marginally competent. They were not. But it gets worse. The bar's second absolute failure was a weekend lunch visit where the place was packed and they only had a single bartender working. And what a doozy she was. She was about as unfriendly as she was unkempt - completely. She had no interaction with us and when we spoke to her, she didn't speak back. I wasn't sure she had really taken our order until she slammed the drinks down in front of us and just turned her back to us without a word. I was going to take it personally, but then that was how she was treating everyone else too. Maybe the worst part was when she was pouring tequila shots into her mouth straight from the bottle and missing about 50% of it which went directly onto her shirt. Classy. We got out of there quickly after that and have basically written this place off. If I'm in the neighborhood I may pop in just to see if they've righted the ship, but I'm not going here specifically any more at this point. It's too bad - maybe what's happening here is what's happened to Bacchanal. A total disappointment. Management needs to get this house back in order. read more

Bought a bottle of red wine here like I usually do when I come to this establishment . After tasting and finding out it had a vinegar after taste which was also confirmed by 3 people at my table I attempted to return it. The bartender who was clearly understaffed told me to "leave it and she would taste it after she caught up", meanwhile she did not offer me an alternative. She had her friend who showed up about 45 min later pour himself some of MY wine and say "it is fine". I ended up paying $30 for this disgusting wine and left half the bottle at the bar. Service is terrible and drinks served with the least amount of friendliness. All of that accompanying dozens of health violations including the bartender licking her fingers while handling EVERYTHING. We go here every chance we get but I will not return to this bar or market again. read more

This is my second time at the St. Roch market and my 2nd time drinking at Mayhaws. The first time I had a lovely no fuss glass of wine. But today's experience was awful. The bar tender was not friendly. She did not prepare the drink as described. The reason why I gave the place 3 stars is from the previous visit and the baby back rib that accompanied my Bloody Mary today was very tasty. The drink however was not all that good. Not the worst place to get a morning cocktail. I enjoy all their versions of the forager because they use their house made shrubs. We've been here a few times. The first time the bartender was friendly and talked to us about the menu and we had a great experience. Today however, the bartender working on the morning of 3/12/17 the bartender was rude to all of us. In fact my companion ordered a Bloody Mary. While the tender was pouring in the mix, she said "would it be possible to get a little extra horseradish?" And he glared at her and said "you know that would have been useful information beforehand." And he slung the drink at her and walked away. A few friends and I visited the Mayhaw on Friday to celebrate a friend's new job offer. A happy occasion turned into a sour one thanks to the poor attitude of one of the bartenders at Mayhaw. I understand we came in thirty minutes before closing and this is frowned upon, but the eye rolling and audible huffing that was directed toward me was rude and the suggestion "get beer or wine I'm not pouring any more cocktails" was unprofessional. Incredibly friendly staff. You can buy wine retail and get glasses from the bar (unheard of where we live) and enjoy the great atmosphere. We spent some time at the Island of Salvation Botanica across the street and the St. Roch Market caught our attention. This is the only bar in the market. We went to this bar twice while we were in New Orleans. The market itself has such a good vibe to it. The bartender who initially served us was strange. He was so unfriendly that it bordered on rudeness. We stepped away from the bar to order something to eat. We nicely explained this and said we would be right back. He proceeded to get rid of our glasses and other customers had taken our seats. His name is Derek, and was so odd and un-personable that I am tempted to think he has autism or Aspergers syndrome. He did however, sort of redeem himself by introducing us to Suzy B. A delicious blonde ale made by Southern Prohibition Brewing in Hattiesburg Mississippi. I hope I can find that beer at home! The other bartender, Whitney, that served us was actually warm, funny and someone you could share a laugh with. He made our day when he waited on us. read more
