My extended family were in Hollidaysburg for the afternoon for a family event, and after the event we decided to experience one of Hollidaysburg's older pastimes... frozen custard! Now, I am not from the area, so it was all a new experience to me, but this being the original and seeing pictures posted on the walls from when my father and his siblings were experiencing this area as teenagers definitely brought on some good feelings. Reading about the history of the place, I found some interesting things that I am going to be relating to some other relatives. My experience there was excellent. We all got some form of custard for the afternoon, and it all went down quite well. The staff handled us all coming in like a herd of buffalos with ease, and we all came out of there happy as clams. I will definitely be returning the next time I am in the area (doesn't happen very often, living in Florida and all). As for those relatives? Well, I am going to be recommending a visit to my cousin in Australia... turns out there is one overseas location in Canberra, Australia, where she happens to live, so that will be a fun "sharing" experience between us! read more

The ice cream is average...NOT worth the damn price though this place is WAYYY overpriced and overrated. I remember when I was a kid, I only went to the meadows to use the batting cages... THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THOSE ANYMORE! Ever since they took them out, I haven't and WILL NOT EVER return to the meadows All that's there, older people and younger kids who believe it's the best ice cream because it's the busiest and people who know the family personally... Great ice cream. I ordered the strawberry shortcake sundae at the window and the staff were friendly. There were chairs and umbrellas to sit outside and eat. As it was a gorgeous day, I did so and found to my delight that the sundae was delicious. Would highly recommend to anyone in the Altoona area for some ice-cream goodness. read more

I don't have a broad knowledge of frozen custard, so I'm reserving judgement. But I do really enjoy the stuff that comes out of the machines at The Meadows. I'll say that it's better than the best soft serve ice cream I've had so far in upstate New York. At least, I'm pretty sure. The only way to know for certain would be to pit the two head to head. But I have been going out of my way to come up with excuses to get back to The Meadows. Today I finally tried their Orange Fluff, and my son generously shared a few sips of his strawberry milkshake. He's a picky kid. These days he makes me ask if the strawberry milkshakes are made with real strawberries, and if they aren't, he'll drink something else entirely. The Meadows uses real strawberries, and the shake was speckled with tons of little bits of pulverized berries to prove it. It's funny because in some ways it seems just a wee bit expensive. But on the other hand, they have a deal for kids that includes ice cream, mini golf and batting cages for $5. And that seems like a steal. My love for this place is growing. Their vanilla is better than their chocolate. The shake was better than the fluff (but the fluff was more refreshing). I really liked the daring pretzel and cream flavor of the day last week. Also, I can't wait to try their sundaes. My son is looking forward to mini-golf and bating cages. So, we'll be back here. Most likely a lot. read more

Totally lucked out having this place practically right across the street from our hotel. After this past year my new motto is "life is short, eat dessert first" so that's what we did. Hubby was quite intrigued by the names of the various items on the windows - orange fluff, black cow, Italian slushie, etc. so of course I felt obliged to inquire before making my decision. After hearing all my options I went with the slushie which is basically Italian Ice & Seltzer water - I chose strawberry and it was deliciously refreshing. The staff is super friendly plus they have a nice seating area off to the side of their large parking area & they even have a mini golf out back. We're from the Baltimore area and we have nothing like this near us (but in retrospect that's probably a blessing because if I lived nearby I'd be here all the time). We'll definitely be back to try out something different before heading home. read more

As of right now, unfortunately you cannot get any ice cream at this location. They are in the midst of rebuilding. They tore down the old building and are putting up a brand new one set back away from the road since every time the road widens, less land is available out front. The miniature golf and batting cages will remain. With the new building there will be more parking spots. Until then, you will have to find one of their other locations to get some of there sweet creations. read more

The best ice cream you will find anywhere!!! So thick and creamy and delicious.. it's frozen custard so it is more dense than regular ice cream. I love the rotating flavors this allows you to try something different all the time.We always stop here when we come home to Altoona to visit family. This is a dangerous place when you live as close to it as I do. During the summer, my husband and I usually visit the Meadows weekly. The flavors are constantly changing and I've yet to have one I don't like. My personal favorite is the chocolate peanut butter. Jammed packed full of flavor and swirls of real peanut butter.
