Wow...just wow! An incredible little restaurant and bakery in the heart of Martinsburg. I can't believe I've been boating at nearby Raystown Lake for many years, passed this place countless times, and never knew of it. I've been to Mamie's before. It's a nice, local place. Post-covid, there are signs and sandwich boards on the sidewalk and doors directing you where to go. One of them says to wait here to be escorted inside. I go in, stand there, nobody comes to help. I want two donuts and a cup of coffee. So I wander deeper into the store and a woman who's been sitting in the back asks if she can help. Mind you, I've been standing there for several minutes and she's said nothing. So she tells me it's okay to round the corner and get my donuts. The store seems confusing. There's no clear place to stand. A young lady helps by showing me their donuts. I get one because the glazed aren't ready yet. I get a cup of coffee; the carafe has exactly one 16oz serving left and starts spitting as I pump. Of course the coffee isn't hot because it's the last of it. I only got one donut because I never saw the glazed appear. Good thing, too, since my plain, tepid coffee was $3.50 because it was "dine-in" coffee. The donut was $2. Ridiculous. All the locals and other visitors can enjoy, but without friendly service and good, fresh products, there's no justification for the exorbitant prices. read more

They can't hear phone orders because the place is too crowded, too small and too noisy and they like to blame the customer for that. There are daily specials as well as a routine menu, but regardless, every single thing is homemade and portions are huge. On my most recent visit, I ordered a cup (really the size of a bowl) of crab bisque and the BLT salad, which had a ton of grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, bacon, tomato, egg, onion and jalapeño ranch. Their cinnamon sweet tea is another favorite of mine. Be prepared for a crowd regardless of what day of the week you visit--this may leave you feeling rushed to eat so that others can have a seat. An absolutely amazing experience. Drove 1,400 miles from Texas to eat here (kidding - kinda/sorta, drove up to visit family). Ordered a Caramel Apple butter latte. Not only was the drink delicious, it was also served in a huge mug. Ordered the angel food cake French toast. It was served with homemade lemon curd, strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream. The presentation was surpassed only by its taste. My wife was only able to sneak one small bite before I cleaned my entire plate. After breakfast went through the bakery. We brought home a pumpkin roll, and two doughnuts. They were also the absolute best. Had an opportunity to meet the owner, Karen. Told her we loved her restaurant. We were so excited to try there breakfast. We drove almost a hour and half just to be told that they were serving lunch. We were soooooo disappointed that a shop known for there breakfast closes at 5 but won't serve breakfast all day. However, the rating has nothing to do with that, that was just my own experience! This is a true hidden gem in Central PA! Came here for lunch and ordered the "best Reuben in the State" and it really was! The cole slaw is where it's at. I also tried my husband's hot beef sandwich and that was DELICIOUS. The beef is shaved nice and thin. I definitely plan on coming back for breakfast! The staff are very friendly and helpful. This was a great spot to stop prior to a meeting in the area. I was hesitant on the "pickle lemonade" and they mentioned experimenting with a "habanero lemonade". So I said sure. That sounds good. It was excellent. Then they gave me a pickle lemonade to try as well. It was good but not as good as the habanero. Then a strange thing happened... I mixed them together. Wow. Spicy pickle lemonade. There isn't enough to be said about Mamie's. Yes, you may wait for a table. But it's worth it! Everything I've had has been fantastic and the ladies that work there make the visits(s) even better. The donuts are outstanding, but everyone knows that. What you need to do is order something from the menu or the specials chalkboard and then have a seat and wait for deliciousness. Oh, and while you're at it, order a specialty coffee drink. During my most recent visit I had the Baklava Latte which was AMAZING and the Chicken Florentine Salad which was refreshing and tasty. Back for breakfast two days later I had the Almond Crunch French Toast - made with brioche bread and it was so good! And filling! I took almost half of it home and finished it with glee from my couch. Even their kid portions are big! An Excerpt from my book going LOCAL! I heard about this place from an unlikely but very reliable source, my friends Mark and Jeff, the Beer Geeks. Some may assume that my esteemed colleagues don't frequent "dry" establishments but, they do and that's what makes these dudes geeks to begin with - they appreciate, embrace, and support the indie spirit whether it's wet, dry, baked or brewed. Beer advocates as well as wine connoisseurs have a knack for sniffing out unique, cool and cozy places - Mamie's has all those adjectives and more! I arrived one sunny morning aboard The Steed to find Mamie's Café located along the main drag of Martinsburg in an old building with windows along the entire front. A vivid red and white striped awning hangs high above the sidewalk and black ironwork flanks the steps leading in. I noticed that it was filled with people at tables and the look was subdued with colors soft and muted in the café, but the bakery side was bright and bustling with folks standing in lines holding bags of goodies. The décor here was of stainless steel, ceramic, baker's racks and bread baskets. This was a cool place for sure so I walked in. As soon as I did I knew why Mark and Jeff told me to check this place out! You know how some places take awhile to warm up to? Not here, not for me. As soon as I entered Mamie's I caught the sweetness (and it wasn't the enormous rack of sticky buns either) and knew I was in a great place. High ceilings paneled with decorative tin, white walls and white and red checkered tile floors. These floors were covered with racks and racks of fresh baked goods, cakes, muffins, pies, doughnuts, cookies, whoppie pies (or "gobs" as they're called in this neck of the woods), and of course, those luscious gooey treats - sticky buns. I ordered a latte and saw an opening in the brick wall that separated the two large spaces that I noticed from outside. I walked through and was totally impressed by the décor and feel. Luckily a high table opened up by the front windows and I sat down and began to write in my sketchbook to make notes of the cool vibe. After a bit of writing and seeing all the delicious food being served around me I decided it was time for a late breakfast. The woman making a fruit tart behind the counter took my order but her hands were deep in dough so when she called on her daughter Valerie to help me I realized this must be Mamie herself. I asked her and she said she was the owner but her name was Karen and Mamie was her grandmother. I returned to my table and within a few minutes my veggie omelet arrived, hot and accompanied by Karen's homemade bread which was thick and toasted to perfection. The omelet practically melted in my mouth - I think it might be the best one I've ever had. It was huge but super light and fluffy, full of veggies and cheese and damn good! I settled in with my breakfast and remaining latte, continued writing and enjoying la vie at Mamie's. After a two hour breakfast, I paid my bill and introduced myself. Karen held out to me the most wonderfully gooey, soft and warm, brown sugar and cinnamon coated hunk of goodness I ever tasted - her famous sticky bun - for free! She didn't even know why I was there at this point, just my name. She just must have been proud of her buns! Ha ha. As we chatted I told her about my purpose there and it was all she could do to talk and keep up with the folks coming in and out for baked goods, pastries, breakfast and lunch. She did tell me that the reason she is there is because she had always dreamed of opening a bakery and café but never could take the risk. After loosing both her husband and son to cancer she realized life was just too fleeting and risks where nothing compared to the joys of life. She decided to make her dream come true and live life while she could. A few years back Harvard University did a survey of folks over 80. They were all asked if they were to do it all over again what would they do differently. The number one response was "take more risks." Karen Wyland took her dreams, rolled them out, added a cup of passion, two tablespoons of courage, a pinch of risk, a dash of grit and a whole lotta love. There are so many positives here I don't know where to start. The baked goods look amazing! I say look because their portions are large and food so good I didn't get to try them, but they looked incredible. Everything is made there an fresh. It's a very homey feel. You grab a cup from the collection of mugs and get your own coffee for example. They spend their money in the kitchen, and it shows. I had the stuffed French Toast which was decadent! The omelettes are overstuffed and looked incredible. The pancakes were light and fluffy and extraordinarily delicious. The coffee was roasted locally and was clearly fresh. They had Sumatra, Kenya, Mexican, and their own unremarkable blend. The Kenya was the favorite at my table. Stopped at Mamie's twice in one week. Here goes: Friday at high noon: the place was packed. The locals in line were really warm and inviting - I know that sounds weird, but that's how it went. I was torn on the beverage side: homemade creme soda or atomic lemonade. I went atomic and couldn't have been more pleased. Sour. Sweet. ZING. I also had the BLT Salad which was fine and the Spicy Pumpkin Sausage soup which was A+++. Friend had the Reuben, and it was kinda sloppy. As an anti-soggy-bread advocate, I cannot say it looked good, but she says it was great. Two Hubs at the table had mile high sandwiches that they loved. We had French Fries and Sweet Potato Fries which were well above normal. To finish, some of us took do-nuts and cookies. The bakery is extensive and a true experience in itself. Monday 10:30am: the place was packed. Of course, I needed a repeat on the Atomic Lemonade. Just as fab. I also had a half order of "The Mess", which is a conglomeration of eggs, ham, peppers and onions mixed with a large order of fried potatoes and covered in cheddar cheese. Crazy good. Both Hubs had full orders of the Grand Canyon Mess - which is as above only with sliced ribeye instead of ham. They loved it and neither could finish. I also had a side of andouille sausage - Yum! Friend had the stuffed french toast and it was a work of art. Two large slices of bread, huge pieces of fresh fruit, cinnamon cream cheese in the middle and freshly whipped cream on top. Glorious. The place marries people and food. The place is clean, efficient and the employees are all happy. The staff is paid above minimum wage and they are focused and friendly.
