They currently carry Purest, a brand that's based in ON, and every Wednesday is gluten-free day; they have pizza and sandwiches that are really yummy. CSA drop-offs also abound here and it sort of turns into a cool little hub of activity in the summer. Not really much by way of seating area except during the summer time when the outside area turns into a patio area. Also probably some of the best coffee in Kingston. Bueno bean is the bomb.

But they also have nearly peerless homemade pastas (of which the smoked paprika linguine is my favourite, though they often only make it by request), spectacular prepared sauces, and regular specials on essentials that will get you things like premium olive oil or balsamic vinegar* at supermarket prices. * Genova is one of the few places I've regularly found a variety of pure, aged balsamic vinegar free from sulphites. AWESOME. So, here's some tips: 1) They ONLY TAKE CASH, no exceptions. I once witnessed a woman curse them out for this fact and declare she'd tell all her friends not to shop there; when she left, everyone in the tiny shop, myself included, burst out laughing, and one of the guys declared "we can barely keep up with the customers we have, we don't need her!". Very jovial, and they took her bitch-fest so perfectly in-stride they could give lessons on how to turn the other cheek. 2) If you need a quick lunch, pick up a focaccia sandwich -- they're about $4 if memory serves, with salami, lettuce, tomato, and mustard, and they're fantastic! If you want to suddenly realize you're hungry, walk down Wellington around 11:00am for the wafting glory of baking focaccia and just try to resist the pull. 3) When ordering pasta instead of ordering by weight, order by serving size. Say things like "I'm having a dinner party for six, four big eaters and two regular", and they'll give you an incredibly accurate amount of what you need, plus a little extra (because people WILL want seconds, believe me!). 4) Their homemade calabrese olives are out of this world good. They use a puree of oil-marinated chilis, oregano, fennel (I think), and oil, and very, very good sun cured olives... and damn, these things are so good I eat them until I hurt. 5) Ask what's on special, or if they have any leftovers. I've scored half servings of pasta, day old (but still delicious) focaccia, and nearly expired but still awesome cheese for cheap. Finally, I'll also mention that the staff here are fabulous -- very nice people who greet with a smile, always bid a good day, and work diligently to help provide you with exactly what you need to hit a homerun with whatever it is you're cooking. Only downside: Toronto Maple Leaf fans. Egads!

What I love is the selection of fresh, local produce at great prices. The vendors are mostly very cheerful and friendly folks, and I enjoy making my weekly trips to pick up whatever is in season. I don't pay much attention to the craft/baked goods or jams and jellies - although they all look fantastic. They are not really up my alley, but if you're interested, come check them out. This market will never be the biggest, nor the most varietal, but what it does offer is great local food from local people. In fact, I'll go as far as to say I prefer the simplicity that some of the other reviewers seemed to be disappointed by. There are no frills here, and that's just the way I like it.

There were wooden crates in front of the display empty except for the top one which had the same rotten beans in it. I saw what I thought was an employee from the produce section and I said "your beans are rotten." His reply was " a lot of them in there are". Why would a store like Farm Boy dish up the last of their rotten beans instead of discarding them. I was very disappointed that a store that prides itself on its produce would actually charge for rotten beans let alone expect people to buy them.

First one laughed when we mentioned a dairy allergy. Second told us that our 10 items was too many for the 8 item line, 4 of which were the same item. There were 2 other cash open each with a line of 3-5 with at least half full carts. Cashier doesn't look at general direction, doesn't talk to me, almost threw items on counter, then after I paid under his breath come again...turned looked laughed not in this lifetime. Neither of us thought the addition of kale to pesto was a great one however we thought we would check it out! The promise of walnuts was not fulfilled which seemed strange considering that the "walnuts" was included in the name. Eventually we decided to mix the excess oil from the greek pasta salad with the kale pesto walnut salad. While this helped the kale pesto salad be a bit more moist, it is clear that this combination was not what grocery checkout intended.
