My favorite stop on the pub crawl, probably because the music was great (a guy with a guitar playing live American rock and roll) and it wasn't terribly loud. Maybe the shot of tequila that we got for being on the pub crawl helped? It's dark, there isn't a lot of seating, and you'll be hard challenged getting the bartender's attention. Many a good night have I had out here. Almost every time, a great band has been playing. I've gotten some weird looks, limboing under someone's leg with a salt seller upside down in my mouth, but mighty craic was had by all. I even decided to take a snooze, lying on one of their benches one time and wasn't disturbed by bar staff. I'm not sure how that reflects on The Mezz itself, but I had pleasant dreams. Word of advice: don't try the 'ass juice' shot. As tempting as it sounds...it's not very good. read more

A place I venture into quite a bit, purely for the music, I would recommend this spot for anyone who likes it live and loud. Sometimes it will do your head in, but if you're in the right mood The Mezz can be just what the doctor ordered! A strange vibe during the day (kinda like the morning after a house party that got way outta hand), but after 9pm the place picks up and the atmospheres electric. Slim is the man if anyone can Slim can. I think I'm still drunk. So Mister Slim is a living bartender legend. If you like to party in a place that is well run and you can feel safe then come here. Great drinks promotions all week. Mixed crowd which is a credit to Slim and his staff as in he treats everyone equally regardless of their accent or dress as long as you are respectful and say thanks! I love that cause it equals a great night when you are with an eclectic crowd. Also who doesn't love screaming Bohemian Rhapsody whilst downing shots of whiskey? YAAAAAAAAAAY I'm in heaven, a proper dive bar with great staff and brilliant music, an eclectic clientele and it stays open late. What more can I say. This is the Temple Bar I remember before it became the Tourist Trap. If you want good live music in an unpretentious setting then this is your place. If on the other hand you want sculptures, sofas, cocktails, food then this place is not for you. We rocked till the wee small hours forgot that I'm not a student and got totally into the music. This is a secret little Brazilian gem! Well, for those who crave proper Brazilian cooking and for those of us who are students on a tight budget lol! Good buffet for lunch, only €5! For this you pick one meat, and take how much salad you want! (Only one plate though, no refills!). I chose the beef "pancake", which is kinda like an enchilada. It was gorgeous, could have eaten 2 or 3 of them!! Accompanying salad was normal, except for the rice and beans which is VERY Brazilian... Well so my Brazilian lunch companion informed me!! And in the Mezz it's all dark and moody lighting, no pretentiousness, and you're surrounded by Brazilian people (indicator of food authenticity!) so I honestly felt like I wasn't in Dublin anymore! Which really should be the aim of every cultural restaurant but so few achieve this! This is a rock/dive bar for sure, I was actually here couple of years ago for the first time, I remember that they serve alcohol late, and played rock, everything else was a vague memory. Fast forward, we get in late to Dublin, and all the regular pubs are closed, and the light bulb goes off, I remember the Mezz, it is 2 minutes walk and bam no cover, live rock music, and offcourse alcohol. Booze wasn't that cheap, but since it was open and jamming when not much was so we enjoyed the music, the Jameson and Guinness. read more

Another night out last night in the Mezz. Thought I'd update my review to include a night time review. After wandering around a load of good few half empty bars last night, I was craving some music, some sweat and some goddam atmosphere. Found it all in the Mezz. The place was kickin, a good crowd around the place, and cheap enough drinks too. One note is that I found the bar tenders to be a tad rude, however, it's fair to also note that the place was thronged so they were under a fair amount of pressure. Regardless, it's defo one to add to your itinerary of a night out. It's open late as well, til 2am on a Thurs - most other bars around there seem to close a little earlier. Schawwaaaatttt. read more

Ahhhh... The Mezz. I will forever speak fondly of this place. Initially, my friends and I were lured here during a night of revelry in Temple Bar by a promoter on the street giving us a green coupon that allowed entry, a beer (pretty sure I drank Bud Light that night.... ha) and a shot of tequila for 5 euro. You say tequila, and I am instantly interested. So, we go in, a punk/grunge band of some sort is playing... and I'm thinking to myself, WHERE IN THE HECK AM I? It's off the beaten path, but the bartenders were friendly and I never was without a drink in my hand. My friends and I were approached by a group of local guys and we had a great night talking, drinking, dancing, laughing, etc. This is definitely not a stereotypical Irish bar/pub experience in the slightest, but my experience at The Mezz will forever cause me to look fondly on bars in Ireland, and really all of Europe. If I find myself in Dublin again looking for a night out, I wouldn't hesitate to come here and experience The Mezz again. read more

This place is wild. There's almost always a good band playing, and drinks are easily gotten from the long bar against the wall. It gets packed in here, so if you're wearing a coat in winter you'll feel like you're going to overheat but it's a really fun atmosphere. This place has a dark, punk/hipster feel but people don't seem to mind too much if you don't fully fit in. It's definitely a dive place, and I'd wonder what it looks like in the light (although I'm pretty sure none of us really want to know). I always have a great time here though! read more

Ah the Mezz. Dark, rough around the edges and live music. The last time I rocked up here (an Easter Saturday a few years ago) it was crazy busy. It was packed with South Americans who all seemed to be getting plates of dinner from somewhere. Fast forward to last Friday and thankfully the place was not jammers with people holding plates of food and there was room to breathe. There was also some live music on the go too, which was not half bad. We hung out for a couple of drinks with some friends in from out of town - hence why we were in Temple Bar - but we scarpered soon after the second drink as the place was warm and I was overdressed for the weather. The beer selection is main stream and the wine comes in small bottles. So I went for Guinness, which was fine. The toilets just about bearable, however the toilet paper dispensers were not working in two cubicles. Those one sheet dispensers can be a bane and always make me wonder why I don't carry some tweezers around with me, hehehe. The Mezz definitely has its place in the Dublin bar scene, just not my cup of tea. read more

Booked the Riverhouse hotel for a recent trip based entirely on internet reviews, none mentioned the wonderful pub attached. From our first sleep deprived beers before we could check in to our last hugs with the bartenders a week later, the Mezz completely defined our time in Ireland. We were there every night and sometimes days (don't know if that says more about us than the Mezz...) The bartenders were friendly, informative and yes, a little sassy, live music in the afternoon and at night (I enjoyed an 80s hair metal band complete with American Apparel onesies) and reasonably priced drinks. I wish I could transport the Mezz and everyone in it to NYC, but I guess I'll just have to settle for going back next year. read more

Having left Dublin a long time ago, I love going back and finding new places to drink, or generally just going home to have a drink in a bar with a great atmosphere, cracking humour, great music and a real Irish feel to it. Now, The Mezz is all of this and more. Although it's got that American Dive bar feel to it, it still has all of the friendliness and atmosphere of an irish bar. Great music, dark, grungy and a bit crusty around the edges, friendly and wicked bar management/staff ( they are sooo laid back and awesome!!) and just overall a great place to go and let your hair down! Found this little gem on sheer fluke one night, haunting the streets of Temple Bar. We had about 17 different experiences in one night. Had a interesting American Hipster feel in the lower level and proper dive bar vibe at street level. The bar tenders will give you as much guff, as they will alcohol. But it's all good hearted guff....who doesn't love a kiss with a fist? The street level had a ska band playing when we first got there, and a pop rock sort of band up next. When we meandered down to the lower level, we were treated to the craziest mix of an experience. There was a live rock band who played. Once their set was through, a DJ spun house music for a bit. Another band jumped onstage for some Bloc Party style tunes and then another DJ set spinning rock staples. I return there OFTEN, and consider The Mezz my own personal spot in the ever buzzing Temple Bar area. read more

3.5 Came to The Mezz on the suggestion of a local who's friend or something was playing in the band (or his friend wanted to see the band, not sure). Seems like a great place to hear some free live music. Divey. If this is your scene, can see why it's really enjoyable. Pretty small and crowded though. read more

Free in and often live music. Bands are usually good. Pints are €5.50. However they do a Rum and coke for €5. It attracts a young vibrant and mostly foreign (as opposed to just irish crowd) I have often not met one other irish person in there!?! Many languages are often spoke in the midst of one conversation. Its good fun and lively. Great atmosphere. It used to be too packed on a saturday but I think its eased up a bit. read more

Oh the Mezz...a mixture of randomness, from the bands to the clientele. Located perfectly in the middle of Temple Bar, just beside the ever-popular Button Factory and opposite the IFI, the Mezz is a good bet if you're looking for a packed bar full of non-Irish locals, with Italians and Brazilians prominent. Always good for live music - from American blues to reggae - and a pint (if you can get to the bar!), its slightly dingy atmosphere makes it one of the last remaining pubs of its kind in Temple Bar, which is becoming ever more polished. The poster-plastered walls and dark interior add to the allure, as long as you're not looking for classy place to sip your cocktail. Rather, if you're hankering after a place to meet people who are more than glad to talk to you (although the sleeze level could put off some women), listen to some good music and have a good night out, then the Mezz is certainly worth a look. Lack of seating could be a problem for some, although if you can grab a seat, they're snug and cosy. read more

When I asked for dive bars, whoever mentioned The Mezz was right. This is the nearest I've found to my definition of a real dive: low ceilings, decent drinks, live music, dancing, and a certain undefinable dirt appeal. It reminded me a lot of a place in Minneapolis called the Hexagon Bar. I'm not a big fan of reggae but for whatever reason, I was so glad to be here the other night. I love this place. Its a very welcoming bar with a big focus on music especially rock and metal and requests are very popular. They have live music each night without cover charge (some very talented musicians). It can get very full later on in the night during the weekend. What a let down. I have to say, I had such high hopes for The Mezz given their good choice of bands! Unfortunately last Friday night I was robbed in the bar, getting my phone and wallet stolen out of my handbag. What upset me the most about this was that my handbag was a satchel style bag, which I wore across my body all night. It has a zip closure and then 2 buckles, all of which were closed so somebody obviously was quite skilled in stealing. I never once took the bag off or left it down anywhere, but realised that despite how cautious I was, my phone and wallet were both gone. Whoever stole my purse also stole some of my (essential) medication. The fact they were able to steal out of a well sealed bag that I wore all night shows to me that these people were pro's. Two other members of my group of friends had jackets and a college hoodie stolen that same night. The attitude we were met by by the staff members in the venue was disgraceful, they clearly did not care at all. I posted on their facebook wall, very politely, only to have my post deleted and be blocked from posting. All I would have wanted was a somewhat helpful reply, even just telling me to check the lost and found. To be blocked is just ridiculous. Since this incident happened I have been informed that The Mezz is notorious for robberies. I will never go again. read more

Walked with two two friends that both work in a bar. Bouncers where spot on. Got to the bar and asked for two hoegardden. Aftet the bar tender decided to act the prick for 5 minutes with another costumer (guy with glasses oldet than most staff) finally got served. Another friend them ordered a guiness which was poured to almost the top and let settle. We pointed this out and where told to leave by the same bar tender. We proceeded to finish our pints and e where at no point met with conformation even though we where threatened to be kicked out by the same bartender. He told us he was the owner and even folloed on the way out to tell the bouncer to never let us back in So we didn't feel welcome and left after the first drink. We ask swore that we would neve visit again and will suggest to our friends. Even though we know customers can be difficult the customer is always right. read more

I really like this bar. It's got a cool crowd and it doesn't try too hard. A cool thing that they do is a Brazilian buffet at lunch time. You order your meat, then go along and fill your plate with rice, beans, patato salad, fresh salad and farinha (flour). It's really good, really filling and only a fiver. Bargain. read more

Great spot, best experienced as the last stop on a night of pub hopping. Cheap drink, good crowd, good vibe. The best thing about The Mezz is the live music - not quite like the 'lad with a guitar' live music you get in other pubs, they have a very clear taste - think Red Hot Chilli Peppers meets the Fugees, if that sounds good you'll probably like whoever's playing on a Saturday night. The worst thing about the mezz *used to be* that it got hot and sticky and smelly when it got too crowded. They must've upgraded their AC recently, because that's not really the case as of my last couple of visits. Still gets very crowded though, so service is bit slow and seats can be hard to come by. More bar tenders and more selection at the taps and this place would have 5/5 from me. read more
