I was thrilled in a small town like arcata, that there was not only a movie theatre, but one with so much history! The minor theatre is just beautiful. I was fortunate enough to make use of it, not only for recreation, but also as part of my history of film classes at HSU. The main screening room has a balcony- something you don't see very often these days. It is grand and old- fashioned with wood floors and creaky, musty ,old seats. There is a definite spook factor, but that is one of the things I love best about it. A couple of years back, The Arcata Theatre, the other one is town (obviously), closed it's doors. It was sad. I used to go there and watch bargin movies. Last time I went to Arcata it was still closed. vacant. abandoned. I'm glad the minor hasn't suffered a similar fate. What a gem of a theatre. We saw Mary Poppins Returns in one of the tiny adjunct cinemas, with very few seats. We luxuriated in our capacious seats, happy to access our refreshments handily spread before us on a long table that still allowed for patrons to pass by. It felt intimate and we felt cared for by our server. I agree with another reviewer that instructions on ordering from one's seat could be more explicit--tell us at the counter when checking in that we can't leave a tip on the card unless we do it beforehand; tell us there is a card that we can prop up. The cards could be smaller so as to fit better in the slots. Also agree that more artsy and indie films are suitable for this venue. May the Minor live on! read more

I live in Arcata and I love movies so I'm at the minor a lot. I love a lot about it since the remodel. The chairs are comfortable and there's plenty of room between aisles to walk. The table service is unique but can be slow depending on the night. I love the fact that I can drink a beer while watching a movie. The concession in general are a but pricey even compared to the usual overpriced movie concessions. The staff has always been kind to me and haven't had a bad experience! read more

Comfy seats with plenty of space. Great food choices, beer wine and cider and they bring it all to you. There are the regular food choices but gourmet hot dogs, pizza from Smugs or APD, Los Bagels empanadas....not the usual fare. With as seldom as I go to the movies, I'll seek out the Minor as my first choice. read more

The best theater I've been to hands down. They have restored it beautifully and it really feels like an old historic theater. The seats recline and are super comfy. The in-theater service is exceptional. You can order from your seat and they will bring it to you. Just make sure you arrive about 10-15 minutes early to enjoy this service. I also appreciate that they use recyclable containers. The previews that are made for the theater and are hilarious. Make sure you tip the waitstaff as they will also collect your dishes when you are finished. Highly recommended! read more

The device was great. The seating was awesome. We like the new tables.We had rented one of the theaters for my friends birthday, we didn't realize there was another party after ours. We were having the cake, they forced us out quickly. Not nicely. We had a large group of people attending the party. They all said they won't have an event here again. They didn't give us any time, and the birthday girl was upset they played the wrong movie. read more

My favorite theater in Humboldt County. I've never had any problems and the customer service has always been excellent. It is pleasant to eat local and restaurant food while enjoying a movie. The leg room and balcony seating is also very nice. read more

We used to enjoy gong to this theater - very cozy & homey. But today we showed up at 3.45 for a 4.10 show. The theater didn't open until 4.05. Then some snot-nosed kid at the counter told me I couldn't take my back pack into the theater -- first time this has happened to me at any movie theater! I wasn't about to walk 5 blocks back to our car to stow my back pack, especially when the film was due to start right away. Save your money. This theater is now part of some corporate group that obviously orders its employees to squeeze every dollar out of each theater goer.. Netflix is cheaper and more convenient, and you don't have to lay out $20 for food. read more

It's a shame that this theater has come to embody its own namesake, despite the fact that the venue itself has managed to be kept up for almost a century now. To be more specific, it's one of the oldest film theaters in the United States that continues to project and features all of the charming architectural details which render it a veritable jewel in terms of Humboldt history. The move was undoubtedly a survival strategy, but it was nevertheless tragic in its own right to witness the Minor being handed over to Coming Attractions Inc.- the multi-tentacled organization which dominates the NorCal motion picture scene and is thus responsible for the inevitably tough Friday night choice between Hot-Tub Time-Machine and She's Out of My League. The smell of monopoly money being cashed each evening is stronger than the scent of cheap popcorn; for this reason I hardly ever see flicks when I go home to Humboldt anymore, unless I'm making the obligatory pilgrimage up to the newly remodeled and revitalized Arcata Theater (an infinitely better choice). As it stands, the Minor Theater is simply a theater now- maybe with even less appeal than a more modern theater venue, given that the seats have lost their spring and there is visible wear and tear throughout the building at this point. Without the eccentricities and the esoteric film choices, this venue remains more of a monument than anything to the joys of going out and experiencing something unique on the big screen. read more

It's a nice theater; spacious with comfy seats. It's pretty luxurious to be able to order food from the comfort of your seat. I was surprised and disappointed, however, that their popcorn isn't organic. Really? You guys realize you're located in Arcata, right? You're really going to sell GMO popcorn? The prices for the food is pretty astronomical. Between one ticket, a couple of kombuchas and a hot dog, I dropped $30. I am sure organic pop corn isn't going to put you out of business; work it out. read more

Different from the typical huge theater. Has its charm and the balcony seats are great. I thought because of the configuration I wouldn't able to get "lost" in a movie but that wasn't the case. It's great and a little cheaper than other places, and being part of a small chain it doesn't seem as bleh as other places. It has character. I won't go here for every movie I see, but it's definitely a spot to go to. read more

I am a fan. Not sure when it first opened but I moved here in 1965 and can't remember it not being here. I still go but I think the idea of serving food in a theater like the Minor seems ridiculous and, as careful as servers try to be, the serving is distracting. read more

I love the Minor, especially when I go to a movie by myself on a Wednesday night and sit in the front row of the balcony with a giant cherry coke and a little bottle of Jameson that I pour in when I've drank a quarter of said giant soda. It's exactly what Isaac Minor had in mind when he set up shop over a century ago. Now the minor is finally get movies when they come out in theaters instead of 2 weeks before they go to video. Well-furnished, old-fashioned theater. I've only been here once, but I really liked it. Unfortunately, it's fairly expensive. It's cheaper with an HSU student ID card though, so that's always a plus. Their movie selection is also very lacking, literally three movies showing on any one day. Go here for the atmosphere and the student discount, but otherwise take the bus to McKinleyville. read more

This place is beautiful. Only issue I had was a guy kept violently coughing (and not covering his mouth) through the WHOLE movie, but that has nothing to do with the theater nor the staff. Staff was friendly and efficient. I will see another movie here next time I'm in the area. read more

WAY better now that Coming Attractions is out of the picture! The best theatre in Humboldt County that provides an all around experience. The only theatre in the area with full service confessions (something you only find in larger cities) and a beautiful theatre. If you're visiting town a trip to this theatre is a must. read more

Overall the best movie experience in Humboldt. Next is more of a note to the owners. Don't fall into the Arcata trap of starting strong and then getting lazy. My point is, In your early days you offered a lot of variability and originality in your pre-movie programming. That attention to detail and keeping it fresh appears to have been lost as I have been watching the same 1920's and 30's movie house or industrial programming for months. read more

Don't use your card when you come here. I had a bad experience. I bought a beer and slice of pizza for a total of 7 dollars, fortunately I looked at the bill when they came back and found out I was paying 21 dollars. They tacked on 14 dollars for stuff I didn't get (two root beer floats) The girl apologized and seemingly took care of it. Unfortunately I did not hold on to the receipts because they refunded me 14 dollars AND THEN charged me for another beer. I foolishly thought it was just part of the refund. So in the end, I got charged 4 bucks after they had just finished charging me 14 bucks. Never had this problem at any business. Could be an honest mistake but just letting everybody know to be careful. read more

It's really a shame, because it's such a beautiful theatre, but I have never seen a more incompetent service staff in my whole life. Their drink ordering system is so ass backwards, and each one of the employees would benefit from even an hour being explained anything about how customer service works, which reflects poorly on management. One of those situations where while many things are terrific, the elements that aren't stand out so much that it destroys the experience. I'd go to a major chain over this place any day just because of the staff. read more

This charming site is home to the oldest continuously operating movie theatre in the country! You'll see photos of opening day in 1914 (!) in the old fashioned lobby. Much of the building's history has been preserved. This place is the antidote to soulless multiplexes! read more

I miss the old Minor Theater, a double feature of independent, foreign or art house films for $1.99. Those were the days. It never mattered what was playing, if you felt like seeing a movie you could just show up at the appropriate time and be treated to something special...I never used to even consult the schedule.
