I've come here twice now and for as cute and instagram-able as the place is, it's been empty both visits, one of which was a gorgeous Saturday evening. Not sure if this place is just secret but if there's anything on the DL about The Miranda, it's how strong the drinks are. Champagne jello shots - so fun. House Punch - Love that you can get a cup of the punch of the day for $6 here and not commit to a huge bowl to share. It's sweet but not too sweet and the punk my friend and I had that day wasn't super complex but lemme tell ya, it was definitely the drink that marks when your night is officially over. Sneaky little booze bowl. My friend and I had also ordered one of their cocktails each and ended up swapping partway through because we each liked each other's better. Both were refreshing and well done and looked loved against the vibrant floral wallpaper in front. The back portion of the bar is the 'speak-easy' side, which as far as I can tell means there's lower seating options and it's much darker. Would definitely be a cool date spot if you you're into people that way, but I could see it being a little awkward only because the place was so very empty. Then again, would be a really cool place to bring a big group of friends and just take over the place -- but maybe give them a warning first since they seem to have just 1-2 people on staff behind the bar. Was trying to find a last minute spot to celebrate my bday and the Warriors, unfortunately lost that night, but it's still a celebration! Enough reason to have some cocktails. Started off with the jell-o shots, made with bubbly, nice start to what was to come. We then went on to My Girlfriends Girlfriend, Mexican Radio then Lips Like Sugar. Horrible service by the bartender who was working yesterday (Tuesday, May 23). He was rushing my friend group to order, which we wanted to take our time doing, and he decided it would be appropriate to kick us out for not ordering after 20 minutes. He yelled at us "That's it, get out of my bar!" This was extremely rude and completely unnecessary, and part of me wonders if it is because we are a group of four women of color. Very cute date spot. Transport yourself to Havana or somewhere grown-up in Miami . You could walk right past it as the front entrance bar is easy to miss . Came here around 4pm on a Saturday to start turning up early for a show at the fox. The bartender was so friendly and fun to talk to and the crowd was practically non-existent (although it sounds like it can get pretty packed at night). The drinks are REAL cocktails, and very fairly priced given their quality. I had La Carambada, Rock on Sisyphus, and a wind up bird and honestly I was very much drunk. Super cute place for a happy hour drink! I've passed by the Miranda numerous times and have always thought it looked cute but small-- but I was very wrong! There is a whole back areas with another bar and lots of seating--couches, chairs, and tables. They serve fun cocktails in nice glasses. This is a good place to go with a group or even on a date. Definitely want to go again and maybe sit in the front area that takes in natural light. Although the back area was much bigger and good for groups, the lighting is a bit dark and around 6:30pm they dimmed the lights greatly. It's right on Broadway so lots going on always! read more

However, walking to the back of the bar, there is far more space and has an array of light bulbs that add a fun modern decor. In total, there is probably four high tables, four couches to sit on, and a bar with seats. On a Saturday night, the bar was filled with people and it had a great vibe. With us just being at Small Wonder, the crowd and vibe was very different. For drinks I got the summer fling, which was a somewhat sweet cocktail with a bitter note and fruity notes. It wasn't my favorite cocktail but it was pretty good. We also each had champagne hello shots. I didn't except them to come in small plastic sauce containers. They were pretty strong for being Jell-O shots and had a distinct taste of champagne. Overall, the bar felt very upscale and seems great for a small group of people to hang out or drinks after a date. Tips - Don't get the blackberry cider here, it tasted like cough syrup. I dug the tropical theme they had going on in this small bar. I went on a slow Monday night, so I can't say how busy it gets, but the vibe was very relaxed and easy-going. Filled with high-backed chairs and string lights, it's one of the prettier bars I've been to. The bartender was courteous but was more preoccupied with entertaining a small group that was already there when I arrived - no big. I came for the cocktails anyways. Speaking of... Lovely Linda ($10; elderflower, bourbon, Alessio Chinato vermouth, dry vermouth, celery bitters) - I was worried the elderflower would be overpowering but it wasn't; sweet, light, with a hint of bitterness. Staycation ($11; Pimms, falernum, lemon, ginger syrup, egg white, orange bitters) - I thought I'd like this a lot just from the menu but when I tasted it I thought it fell a little flat. I'm an Oakland native, and naturally, I wanted to be greeted like a VIP, especially when I decided to take my son out for drinks for his 21st BD. The bartender was not feeling the vibe about us, and didn't welcome us, nor make eye contact. There were others that he was servicing, and even another lady from the tables came up after us was served before us. I was totally not happy, and threatened to leave. Didn't know if it was prejudice, or what, but definitely didn't feel the warm and fuzzies here. I almost walked out, then another bartender came from the back, greeted us, and served us drinks. It was kinda too late... These bearded hipsters who come into my town, should be a little more respectful of ALL patrons, no matter their age, gender, race! Once you walk all the way to the back it's another bar area with tons of bar stools and big comfy chairs! I must say that the design of the bar reminds me of a hotel lounge area, I love it! Miranda doesn't serve food inside...Booo...I know. But no worries because it's BYOF (Bring Your Own Food). Yes people! You heard that correct! You can't go wrong when you have a BYOF option! I must admit that this is not the place if you are interested in having a drink and watching the game...WHY? Because the bar doesn't have a television inside! Yup, you heard that correctly! An artsy, glamorous space sits just next to The Punchdown in downtown Oakland. Cocktails and spirits are the stars of the show here but champagne ranks pretty high as well. This is my kind of bar! For now, it's my favorite bar in Oakland! The Miranda has a really nice and intimate setting. Their decor is very clean and sharp looking. They also have big leafy plants which sets a chill classy vibe to me. Besides sitting at the bar, there are a few tables (maybe seats up to 4 people) you can sit at. They play the kind of music I like which is R&B, 90's R&B, and all the past and current catchy hits you hear on 95.7 or 94.9. Loved it! I don't like the place nor the music but I just can't deny the cocktails are excellent. My wife and I like to get a drink on Sunday night once in a while, sip something and relax before the new week and while this may be the place for some it wasn't for me. Expect super loud rap music, just not my thing but I can see some would like it. Besides that, the cocktails are fantastic and that was the highlight. A fine craft cocktail bar with interesting decor and seating, and a wrap around bar creating two seating areas. Definitely adds some casual class to the area. There are a lot of bars in this part of downtown - Van Kleef for the fascinating dive; Dogwood and Make Westing for the "I want to be seen more than I care about the drink"; Woods and Diving Dog for beer; The Punchdown for Wine. The Miranda fits more with Flora in the feels a bit more upscale but is also casual craft cocktail vibe. As it is located right next to The Punchdown, I originally couldn't find it my first time, but it is there. It also is a bit deceptive as there is a front bar with a few seats but if you walk in, you enter into a large room with a slightly tropical vibe, but not full on Tiki Bar. The cocktail menu is definitely interesting, with some really unique cocktails but what is great is they know their stuff and can make some great craft cocktails. I've been here on dates and with friends before and love recommending it. With Hello Stranger across the street, definitely some new bar hopping options. read more

We were not planning on coming to The Miranda, but rather to Bar 355 for their Planned Parenthood happy hour. After both that and Drexel were too crowded, we found about about The Miranda and were so happy we did. It seems really small when you walk in, but just keep coming. The back has many more seats (bar stools and fancy couches). They have a really nice cocktail menu and beer and wine options as well. Two bathrooms, both were clean. Would definitely come again! Really low-key spot in a great location. Downsides: No food. And it was really cold inside, even in the back. read more

Ordered tequila and soda. Was flat and asked for him to fix. He said he opened the bottle an hour ago and acted surprised that a small bottle of carbonated water would go flat after an hour with the lid off. They didn't have enough tequila to make another drink so they asked me to pick another tequila. They mixed the other tequila with the small amount of the previous tequila rather than making the new drink with the new tequila. I never asked for a 1/2 and 1/2 tequila drink. Amateur hour. Super annoying loud for no reason. About 15 people in here and I had to put some torn paper towel in my left ear to stop the pain. Let alone be able to talk to my friend in the next bar stool. I really want to give this place a 1 star rating but the venue is cute and the restrooms are clean. AS FOR THE SERVICE???????? Jesus Christ. I came here last night, on a Friday night during the holiday season and I was floored at the horrendous service given by the ultra rude grumpy bartenders. As a former bartender myself, I expected Fridays to be my busiest days but guest service and satisfaction was always my focus NO MATTER WHAT! First off, with the looks of those frumpy grumpy bartenders, they have absolutely NO ROOM ON THIS PLANET TO EVER BE RUDE OR STUCK UP WITH ANY GUEST if you catch my drift. Second, if a guest orders a beverage THE WAY THEY WANT IT (for example, I ordered "chilled shots" and the bartenders all would roll their eyes and say "really?" TO MY FACE!) and you attest their option because you're too lazy to make the drink, well maybe it's time to reconsider your career path. Lastly, this is Oakland. The gentrification is already loud, clear and obnoxious. It should be imperative that these punk rock bartenders treat all guests the same! With smiles and a good attitude. There was one beautiful bar back that was nice and smiley, not jaded like the ones with all the piercings and interesting hair cuts. She gets 5 stars. As for the two Bartenders in the back side of the bar near the DJ booth, please consider taking a customer service crash course or an ethics refresher because you ladies really brought the entire mood and vibe down and I never want to be served a cocktail by again until your attitudes improve. read more

Currently my favorite bar in Oakland! I like the layout - small front bar/space and a larger, airy, and tropical-like setting in the back. I've had a number of cocktails there but I tend to get the Oaxaca Holiday which is right up my alley - not too sweet but still tropical in flavor. There's a bartender there that is quite interesting to say the least. We've had some pretty intense political discussions and although I disagree with him on some major points, we still have a good time talking about it. One of the best parts is that it's right off the 19th Street Bart Station so you can get your drink on and stumble back to the Bart if it so pleases you! read more

Came here during the time that there was a private event going on in the back room (birthday party) but was open to the public once we arrived. There's a bar at the front, and then one in the back. The back area is quite spacious and was pretty! I ordered the gin cocktail, BF got an old fashioned and my friend ordered the bourbon drink. They all tasted okay, but none of us were really crazy about the drinks. The bar was SUPER loud due to the birthday party, so it was impossible to hear anything. I have never been more motivated to write a review about any business in my entire life until now. I usually like to spread the word about good food and service to friends via word-of-mouth because I enjoy interacting with people, but now I feel like I need to write a PSA to ensure other PAYING customers don't experience bottom of the barrel customer service, which left a bad taste in my mouth as multiple other reviewers had mentioned. To ensure you have as much context as possible before going into the events that transpired, as an inherently empathetic, patient, and positive person, I try to give the service industry sometimes multiple chances if there's delays or errors because I know many are overworked, stressed, etc. - it's just plain hard work and I totally get it. As long as they try to rectify their errors, I'm a pretty easygoing and flexible customer. However, as a frequent patron at international, domestic, and local bars and clubs, I have never been treated the way I have until now. Even though I had received poor service the last time I was here, as I mentioned above, I still gave the bartender a second chance after she had rudely acknowledged me and she ended up coming around afterwards. This time around, I came with a group of friends and ordered a round of tequila shots and had not been offered any lime and salt. I'm like that's fine, the bartender is clearly working nonstop given the lines of people waiting to purchase drinks and I can work without salt. The previous time I was here, she was also pretty nice to me as well, so I was even more understanding. Then we realized we at least need limes. I saw a glass of limes on the counter, reached out to move the glass a few inches closer (on the counter and not grabbing the entire glass and running away with them just we're all crystal clear here) so I could pass the limes onto my friends AFTER HAVING JUST PAID FOR THE SHOTS because they were a package deal pretty much everywhere else in the world, and the bartender gave me the glare of death, essentially a microaggression, as if I had just offended her and her ancestors and stole her firstborn. ONCE AGAIN, ALL WE WANTED WAS SOME LIMES. I only intended to take 1 for each shot I had JUST PURCHASED. Like a previous reviewer, Gino E., had mentioned, instead of communicating the rules of the bar are different here and explaining that limes are available upon request in the future, she just grabbed the glass back and said, "Don't take my limes!" My friends were just as confused and befuddled as I was. I get that rules can vary depending on the establishment, but there was no need for microaggressions and being treated like we just committed a crime there and even worse than patrons I've observed being treated at pubs run by Irish mobs for pure, simple miscommunication. People don't tip in Ireland, so at least that justifies the subpar service there. Management needs to step up and invest in customer service training particularly around microaggressions, implicit and explicit biases, racial equity, and simply not making assumptions that customers are inherently horrible human beings, which is also evidenced by previous reviewers' detailed accounts. Of course, I try to be a decent human being and actually still tip the bartender even though she really deserved no tip whatsoever, which is further evidence of how empathetic and unpetty I am in spite of everything. But now it is my duty to ensure everyone is making an as informed decision as possible before ever frequenting The Miranda. If 0 stars are possible on Yelp, that's definitely what I would've given. read more

I've been here for drinks multiple times and enjoyed myself each time so I decided that it merits a review. Their menu is reasonably priced (~$10-$12 for a cocktail) which a good selection of specialty cocktails. My go-to cocktail these days is a Negroni and they had a house-Negroni that tasted as a Negroni should with a slight twist to it; I forget (I had two by the time I asked the bartender) what they did differently for the house-Negroni, but it was quite nice. It's never too crowded at The Miranda, so we always have enough elbow room to enjoy our drinks. read more

I went to the Miranda to meet a friend on a Friday night two weeks ago because I'd heard about the fantastic drinks. The place was definitely busy, but I found a table in the back to put my things down and made my way to the bar to order a drink while I waited for my friend to arrive. She was running about 15 minutes late, so I figured I'd be ready for drink #2 by the time she arrived. Boy was I wrong. I stood at the bar the entire time, while the bartender helped a couple of people before turning her attention to restocking different things. While I understand that's part of her job, it would have been nice had she maybe acknowledged me during this time to tell me it'd be a few minutes. But no. And in fact, she then proceeded to serve two different people who had arrived after me. By the time my friend arrived, I'd had enough of the crappy service, and we headed to Fauna for delicious drinks without any of the service issues. At some point I'll plan to come back to the Miranda, but it may take a while given the poor service experience I had. read more

Great cocktails, creative staff, gorgeous atmosphere. A friend and I were looking for a place to host our 10 year high school reunion and we happened upon the miranda. Both Bay Area natives, we were not familiar with the place but pleasantly surprised upon our visit. The staff was friendly and welcoming. We tried a few cocktails off the menu and we're both impressed. We decided to go through with it! A few months later while hosting our reunion, the bartender was gracious enough and patient enough with my indecisive self to build be a gin cocktail with the spirit of my choosing, including a house made apricot liquor they have on hand. It was delicious. Similar to a gimlet with the added complexity of the apricot. And it allowed me to try a new, local gin that I was not familiar with. Junipero, made in SF. Clearly the staff is knowledgeable. The atmosphere is gorgeous as well, another reason we chose it. The seating and lighting give it a classic, retro type feel without being kitschy. Gorgeous lights and interesting furniture pieces, winding booths and capped chairs. Mixed with modern patterned poppy paper to give it a contemporary feel. Definitely worth a stop by next time you're in downtown Oakland, waiting for a show at the fox theater, or for nearby dinner reservations. read more

This new Oakland lounge is a bit of an unknown gem. It's got a classy feel with beautiful decor - you can tell a lot of work went into remodeling the interior, and the bars were built from the ground up. The beers are about $7 and the happy hour price is $5. There isn't much dancing, it's more of a social lounge. The attire is a bit on the classy side, as the place itself is somewhat Oakland-classy... and also diverse! I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking to step into the Oakland lounge scene. I am so happy we did, because we now have a new favorite to add to our nightlife adventures in Oakland. The ambiance and interior decor are elegant, but without the pretentious vibe you get from bars in San Francisco. From the outside, Miranda looks like the smallest, loneliest bar in the world, with a four foot long bar and two chairs. Once you walk inside, you realize there is a whole other bar on the backside of the teeny tiny bar separated by a wall and a walkway. The back room is a goodly size, and can seat maybe a dozen at the bar, and a couple dozen at assorted tables in the room Miranda doesn't appear to be the type of place where you would go get down-and-dirty, sloppy and splayed out on the floor. This is more of a place where you might come for a single glass of wine after work, before stopping home, or where you might take a date while waiting on dinner reservations elsewhere. Miranda is pretty and fair and twee. It's the exact opposite of somewhere like Merchant's or Geo Kayes. Still, there's a time and place for everything, and the Miranda is a cute little bar for folks who live and work Uptown. read more

The bartenders on Tuesdays are not particularly attentive. We waited for 10-15 minutes on a relatively quiet night ( less than 10 patrons) and received no service. This has happened on several occasions over the last few weeks and is a shame given how big fans we've been of Miranda. read more
