Iv been here a few times now and it has defiantly grown on me. The wait staff can be slow but it has more to do with the laid back nature of the place rather than laziness, so it's ok. And they are always very nice. Iv had some amazing food here and highly recommend the fish fry or bangers. A few things on the menu were obviously frozen and microwaved and I don't understand why because everything else was great. For the kindness of the staff and good food (minus a couple items) this is a great place for dinner or to grab a few pints for the night. If you from the other side of the pond, I hear it's also a great place to get tea and other food products you can't typically find in Iowa. read more

Great fish and chips, good beer and cider selection, hot tea for when I'm in the mood for something warm, and a friendly atmosphere. One of my favorite places in town, and definitely worth a stop! There is a small grocery section as well stocked with some British classics. read more

We had a great time at Mucky Duck Pub. We enjoyed the beer flights, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, bangers and mash, pastees, and fish n chips. Everything was excellent but best of all was the service! I'm a fish and chips guy. If I go out to eat and fish & chips are on the menu, I just can't resist ordering it. The fish and chips at Mucky Duck were up there with the best I've had. Seating is tight, but the food is authentic. I'm a fan of the bangers and mash. My go to for great British fair.

My husband and I went together. The atmosphere was really fun, it's small and the staff was really friendly. The drink menu is amazing, I'm almost sad I'm not a beer drinker. We're planning to go back and try a different moscow mule each time though. The food was really great. I had the fish and chips and the only complaint was it was huge. I didn't realize it would be that much food but it was delicious. We both really enjoyed it. I came straight from work and next time would dress down a little before coming though. A great selection of beer, including the domestics for those that aren't adventurous. The other food I've had is great too - curry and a pasty. Mmm. Love this place! read more

This was one of the most pleasant pubs I've had he privilege to visit this side of the UK. Marcus had made pickled eggs, and I was lucky to enjoy a couple with him. Very very good fish. Very very slow service. The staff seemed more interested in watching Dr Who, which was at volumes too loud to allow conversation, than working. It took them well over a half an hour to fry two pieces of fish. read more

Fantastic fish and chips and beer selection, and staff was friendly. I feel like they could have a larger selection of single malts, but now I'm being picky. Don't go into it with high expectations for the decor and you will be fine. This is a great place to grab a drink after work, or lunch when you're craving something authentically British. read more

Tried this pub for the first time last night. Went about 430 for dinner and it was quiet. Our server was friendly, let us wander around looking at all the interesting items for sale. Their drink menu is HUGE!!! My husband was enthralled :) While their menu is a bit limited, it was very tasty. I had the Cornish pasty and he had a tenderloin. The pastry was delicious and the stuffing well seasoned. His tenderloin wasn't thin and dried out. One of the best he says he's had. We'll be back to try other menu items! read more

This is a great bar with a very concrete theme. However quality of food and service can be less than subpar. It's usually a hit or miss. They've got an extensive list for both tea and beer lovers alike! And a wicked mango mint moscow mule! The patio is a fun spot to be in the summer, but is less enjoyable when seating/umbrellas are not functioning. Which has been the case for me. They do allow dogs on patio, however, it is a small space and don't have many accommodations for the dogs. Such as not having an immediate water bowl, and bringing out small paper bowls upon request. All in all, it's a get what you get sort of place. And what you get is pretty okay! read more

A delightful little place with really good pub food and extensive beer selection. I was so glad to stumble upon this place. The beer options were impressive and the server was knowledgeable and willing to fill me in even though they were pretty busy. The Cornish pasty was quite good. The fish chowder was thicker than most but I am okay with that. It was nice to have some background music you could hear, but still easily carry on a conversation. Came here with my two kids as we were in town on business. It is a bit of a hole in the wall but it is decorated like an old English pub and is such a quirky place! We were seated by the door and the place was so busy that the door kept opening and the cold air would rush in.... kind of unpleasant, but we just ate with our coats on (it was 28 degrees out). I ordered the chicken curry (i'm such a sucker for curries) despite the waitress recommending the fish & chips..... which I had just ate for lunch.... but the curry came in a large portion with plenty of basmati rice. It warmed my soul! Lots of flavor and lots of chicken... so good. The kids had fish n chips..... which I tasted, and actually preferred my selection. I sometimes get headaches when I eat fried foods, and I could tell right away, that it was the type of fried food that would definitely give me a headache...... but all in all, it was a great experience! Just ate here for lunch with my niece and sister. The food was delicious and the service was quick. I had the bangers and mash with a side of mushy peas, my sister had the chicken curry, and the niece had chicken nuggets and chips. Everything was wonderful, and my 5 year old niece even enjoyed the bangers and mash as well as the curry (well the rice from the curry), and she is very picky. Gotta try this place, good food, good service, and a good beer selection which I will have to come back to try sometime. read more

After several trips to Ames, I finally got my son to go to the Mucky duck, he had a bad experience a while ago. I love British food, so I won. I had the fish and chips with a side of mushy peas. The fish and chips was wonderful. Light batter on a large slab of fish. This is the first place that I've been to in the US where the fish was served just like in England. Very good. The chips were also good. The mushy peas were fantastic. Not the same that I've had in England but great in their own way. Glad I asked the cook how they were made. I'm going to try it at home. Can't forget the beer. This is the only place in the US that of been able to get Old Speckled Hen on tap. Heaven. My wife had the steak and Guinness pie. She thought it was great. She followed it up with Spotted Dick. I got a spoon. We both loved it. My son had bangers and mash. He came in skeptical but left as a fan. There wasn't a drop of gravy left on his plate when he was done. His girlfriend also had the fish and chips. She liked it too. Great food in a gas station atmosphere. They were very busy for a Tuesday night so the service was slow. Took a while to get a waiter, but once I did, he was attentive. Maybe, once the owners realize how good their concept, food and beer is, they will make the place more like an English pub rather than a gas station. Just a thought. read more
