Eugene Sudbury School - Democratic Immersion School

Eugene Sudbury School

We are THRILLED to have our sons going to Eugene Sudbury School!…read more Here is a bit about their philosophy: More than just hands-on... Sudbury model schools depend on self-paced, self-initiated deep learning. It is the kind of learning that doesn't depend on bells or limits, but stretches across the day or even the academic year, and ultimately, across students' lifetimes. There need not be an arbitrary end to the challenge, but instead students can see how one challenge leads to the next. Thus the natural inquiry associated with Sudbury schools situates problems in context, in history, and in geography. It enables deep understanding, critical thinking, questioning, and ultimately, significant learning. There are four key components to a democratic education: freedom, democracy, responsibility, and equality. FREEDOM Sudbury students are free to choose how they spend their days. We believe in children's innate curiosity, impulse to learn, and drive to become successful adults. We allow them the freedom and the ultimate responsibility to choose their curriculum. Our curriculum is the unlimited palette of life, from chess to gaming, chicken raising to mentoring younger students. There are as many successful adult paths as there are curious children. We value all children's paths. We respect and value all disciplines and learning endeavors. We offer a space for nontraditional pursuits as well as traditionally academic ones to exist alongside one another. We place a strong emphasis on self-evaluation, so we do not grade students but offer support when needed.

This is how school should be done! Students of all ages and levels have the opportunity to learn…read moretheir way. Kids have numerous choices--art, outdoors, quiet reading, computers, science, math, cooking, gardening, a romp room, and more. They can take classes, workshops, and field trips. They learn by doing what they enjoy. Sudbury is a democratic immersion school, so students as young as 6 learn problem solving and conflict resolution and apply those skills daily in a real world setting. If you are discouraged by the testing, worksheet, and excessive homework culture that has robbed students of the thrill of learning in traditional schools, you should check out this school!

I am updating my first review to include a review of our cookies and cake. Our expectations were so…read morefar exceeded that 5 stars doesn't seem like enough. The cookies were just amazing, and our idea for a woodland rose birthday theme was perfectly executed. We had the cake designed to match my daughter's dress and it was perfect. We got the vanilla cake, raspberry filling, and vanilla buttercream. Everyone loved the cake and it was so fresh, not overly sweet, and had that homemade goodness to it where close tour eyes and smile and feel nostalgia for something new. My husband is still raving about the cookies, so I just ordered him a dozen more for fun. He is also already trying to think of another occasion so we can order another cake before his birthday in December.

Let me start off by saying I have no baking or cooking or decorating skills. My friend invited me…read moreto an Easter cupcake decorating class. I figured why not I can bring them to my family for Easter. The process and instructuon made it so simple and literally for ANYONE and ANY skill level. They had the ingredients and decorating items pre set for us with a dozen naked cupcakes ready. We were shown how to do a variety of icing shapes and made so many different styles. My creativity was flowing and we both had a blast. I would totally recommend this place. The teacher & helpers came around and made sure to give us personal attention and help if needed. Can't wait to try another class.

What a great little art supply store in Florence! First off, the woman who I talked with while I…read morewas there is fantastic. I think she may have been the owner, but I'm second-guessing myself a bit now. I was on the Charm Trail. We got to talking and somehow it came about that while I'm from Eugene I currently live in Chicago, and she happened to live in Chicago at one point, too. We also both worked at universities in the city. Just having a chat with her made it a fun stop. The store is very clean and has many of the art supplies one would need to create their next masterpiece--paper, canvases, paints, pens, you name it. They have information about workshops and art-related events as well. I am not much of an artist but I did do a paint night in grad school once and found it to be a lot of fun (surprisingly so--it was very soothing). That is to say, you may also find painting to be a relaxing activity, so if you've ever wanted to pick up the hobby, visit here and you'll good guidance from very helpful staff. I was a bit sad that it's not in Eugene, since I don't get to Florence very often even when I'm home visiting, but coming here did spark creative energies that I'm hoping to follow in the coming months!

I poked around a bit and found several items costing less than my go-to internet sources. Well done to the owner! Staff was knowledgeable and helpful too. I will be back.
