The woman who owns this shop also owns Periwinkle Station next door and PS Winkles across the street. She was very friendly and was happy to provide help when I needed, but also didn't breathe down my neck as I was perusing the store. I was on the Florence Charm Trail, but earlier when I was on Bay Street I hadn't stopped into this shop and I'm glad I did the second time around. I was trying to be quick on my trip through this store because my mom and I had planned to head back to Eugene much earlier... so I didn't get a chance to wander leisurely, but there were a few things that caught my eye and I had to keep myself from looking and buying. Had I had more time, I don't think I would have gotten out that easily.

I've lived there on and off since I was 18, and stopping at River Roasters has become a tradition whenever I'm in town. I love the coffee, the cozy coastal atmosphere, and sitting outside with my children for our annual photo. For years, I've recommended this shop to anyone visiting Florence. This weekend, I ordered five drinks, spent quite a bit of money, and left a generous tip. While waiting, I realized one of the drinks was supposed to be iced instead of hot. I politely apologized and asked if it could be changed. The employee immediately huffed, gave me a dirty look, rolled her eyes at her coworker, and made it very clear that my request was an inconvenience. I was honestly shocked!! I even told her that if it was too much trouble, I would take the drink as it was, but she completely ignored me. When she finished remaking it, she pushed it toward me without saying anything. As a manager now myself, and a previous business owner in Florence, I understand that people get busy, overwhelmed, and frustrated, especially when there's a line out the door. But when you work with the public, customers should still be treated with basic kindness and respect. If you're annoyed, step away and collect yourself. Rolling your eyes, huffing, and being openly rude to someone over a simple drink correction is unacceptable. To make the situation worse, as my family and I were leaving, the employees loudly called out, "Have a great day!" in an obviously sarcastic and passive-aggressive tone. A genuine "Have a great day" should be offered to every customer not used to mock someone on their way out. What makes this especially sad is that River Roasters wasn't just another coffee shop to me. It was part of our family tradition and a place I have supported and recommended for years. Unfortunately, after this experience, I won't be returning. There is another coffee shop down the road, and that is where we'll begin making new memories. I genuinely hope the owner sees this and takes the customer service concerns seriously. Good coffee may bring people through the door, but the way customers are treated determines whether they come back. And quite honestly, if you cannot be kind to the public while providing a service, then perhaps working directly with customers is not the right job for you.

And it reminds you that gifts are not just for you but forgiving to others. There's everything from locally made jewelry to uniquely scented candles to jewelry that includes height, formed during the Mount Saint Helen explosion, and turned into glass like gems. The best little store in Yachats. A real old fashioned general store! They've come through for me…read moreso many times over the years when I'd forgotten to bring things I needed: a flashlight, a travel candle, and most recently a charging cord. And of course I find a lot of things I don't need, too! One of my favorite t-shirts came from here; it's got their store logo, which is an adorable little steampunk anglerfish. I'm so obsessed that I got a sticker with the same logo on it this trip (also, they have a lot of awesome stickers). On top of that, the staff are super friendly and welcoming! There's one delightful woman who has been there the last couple times, and she's a joy to chat with. I wish I had asked her name. I work retail myself, and she exudes the same warmth I try to give to all of my customers, too. It's not always an easy job, but you can tell when someone genuinely wants to make customers feel at home in their space and takes pride in their job.
