There are not many hotel options in the Burlington area, but I selected this Hampton because it seemed to have the best reviews. The desk clerk was friendly, and I was greeted warmly. Although I was told that I had been "upgraded," but the room was exactly what I had reserved. It was nothing special, but fine. Regarding cleanliness, it seemed to be okay on the surface, but I dropped something under the bed and found some remnants of cereal that had not been picked up by a vacuum. Not the end of the world, but it was there. Although I see that several people have commented that the breakfast was good, I found it to be loaded with a lot of unappetizing, artificially-flavored junk. The powdered eggs did not look appealing. I made a waffle, but threw it out after one bite. I ended up with a banana and oatmeal. I am probably in the minority here, but I think it would be better to have fewer breakfast options, but of higher quality. My biggest complaint was that with fees and taxes, the room for one night cost over $300! For a little town like Burlington, and for the quality of the hotel, I think that room rate is outrageous. If you have to stay in Burlington, and need a hotel, this is indeed your best option. However, if you don't mind traveling a few miles, I would stay at a less-expensive hotel closer to the expressway.

However, it remains a 60s era motor court motel that has not been renovated or upgraded probably since it was new. It is clean, and the grounds are well taken care of. But no continental breakfast, old TV, plumbing and tile from the 60s, rough but clean old towels, old furniture, and yes, the old style paneling from that era as well. A place taken over by immigrants, you see it all over the country, and they are trying to do their best with something that has been simply run into the ground. The room was clean and had a rustic modern feel. When the carpet is beige, you know they have to take care of it consistently. Everything had a plush feel. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and a handheld. There's a scent that emanates throughout the hotel and into your room. It's light and adds to the ambiance. It's also in the sheets and linen too. I guess that adds to one of the negatives I list later in that the HVAC seems to be centrally controlled. There was some very minor debris in the sink that may have been left from wiping of a dirty rag, but that was mostly it. Gym was nice and parking was plentiful and free. What I didn't like: - Mini fridge in the room had a lot of snacks and other drinks that I assume were for sale. I usually pack my own food, so those items took up some space in the fridge - I get cold easily, so I try to adjust the thermostat, but it's centrally controlled, which I've never seen... The mansion was built in 1856, making it the first mansion in Lake Geneva. The estate has been completely redone but charming details were kept. Along with a mansion where you can book a room, Maxwell also includes beautiful gardens, lounges, outdoor fireplaces, a heated pool, croquet and bocce ball. There is also a separate area in the back with motel rooms. Like I said, I was there for a lil' drink. There's a bar inside the mansion (Apothecary Bar) with all kinds of medical and druggist paraphernalia, with the space being a tribute to Dr. Philip Maxwell. But it's the speakeasy, which is accessible outside in the front of the house, that you'll want to visit. Ask for the password inside the mansion, and they will let you into a dark, below-ground bar. It's all decorated in prohibitionist flyers, and even the bartenders are dressed up in period costumes. It's a really cool and unique bar in Lake Geneva.

A few days after we visited the speakeasy, we went in to try the apothecary bar to get some food and drink. A friendly helpful bartender, explained all their creative cocktails, shared the pub food that they offered, and answered questions. We ordered a flatbread pizza and a spinach artichoke dip as well as a couple of cocktails. They served us at a table where we sat on a couch in a room just across the hall and were quite comfortable. There are other rooms where you can go - not much seating in the actual apothecary bar.
