The Neighborhood Music School is an impressive place, that I wish I knew about earlier. Their…read moremission is to help people of all ages and backgrounds learn music, everyone from small children to seniors. There's even a class just for seniors! You don't have to be a kid or aiming for Carnegie Hall. I don't know as much about this, but they also appear to be a community meeting place for musicians. They organize a lot of ensembles. The Yale community doesn't seem to be aware of the organization, even though a lot of people would benefit from an alternative to Yale ensembles. I took the beginning adult group singing class with Ingeborg. Including myself, there were 6 students, ranging from 20s-60s. I can only give the teacher my highest recommendation. She is an energetic, engaging teacher who has the utmost regard and care for her students. I've had 8 years of piano lessons and know some classical music, and from talking to her, I could tell she really knew her stuff. She had even heard of this obscure Broadway musical that I was sure she wouldn't know. Her explanations of vocal technique were clear and easy to follow even if you didn't have any music background. I almost cracked up laughing at how hard she worked to convince the students that vocal technique is fun. But it worked. Almost everyone wanted to continue the class in the fall. If you're an adult wanting to learn piano or voice for the first time, it's hard to imagine a better teacher than Ingeborg.

I used to have a positive take on this daycare, but most of the good teachers have left and they…read morehave been replaced with teachers who are low on experience and not properly trained. There are still some great teachers left, but they are few and far in between. The daycare director Catherine is great as well, most of the issues happen when one of the associate directors or managers are there. Over the last few months I have had issues with my kid just not being diaper changed because they forgot, them disciplining my older son by having him go to another classroom where he just sits and cries or putting him in the lobby, them not knowing how to handle normal toddler situations, like them fighting over toys/books, they're inflexible if your child doesn't want to sit still and do workbooks so they try and force them to do it. The owners response to that was "your child is detrimental to the learning experience of the other children", even though we had him evaluated by birth to three for behavior and they said he is fine, its the daycare, the owner says she disagrees and did not follow the recommendations b23 gave them for training. My son had a cast on this summer for a leg fracture and the teachers there did not follow his care plan and let him sit in a sprinkler getting his cast wet at 1030am, they did not notice his cast was wet all day and at 530pm when I picked him up I had to take him to the ER to cut it off and it was still soaking wet. The owners response to that was that the 2 teachers responsible have a positive review from another parent, so that overrules my concerns and that she simply had them watch a safety video. They didn't even want to comply with having my child moved to another classroom until I threatened to stop bringing him. Those teachers both still work there and admitted that they purposely didn't follow the care instructions for my son because they 'didn't think it would be an issue' and that 'I am just nitpicky and like to complain a lot'. I would no longer recommend this facility for people. They have a lot of issues they need to work through and they aren't nurturing your kids, they are just herding them. Also be aware they bribe parents with gift cards for good reviews.

My kids started in the infant room and moved up through the preschool room and every teacher/helper was so kind and gave such great attention to each child. In addition, Amy was always so flexible with scheduling. It made life much easier because I could always depend on Duck Pond to help me with arrangements.

From early in my pregnancy, we did a lot of reading about day cares, visited several, but we knew when we visited Duck Pond that was where our Jack would end up. We clicked instantly with Amy, the director, who strikes the perfect balance between down-to-earth and professional. She is caring, trustworthy, and always reasonable. So we chose Duck Pond for Jack when he was a mere 2 months old, and he just had his last day there (due to moving) 2 years later. Duck Pond's atmosphere feels like family, and we loved that if we wanted to talk to someone about Jack's needs (he had an anaphylactic egg allergy for a while) or if we had scheduling or billing questions, there was no corporate infrastructure to navigate. We loved that it was a family run center, that every staff member knew Jack by name and was excited to see him in the morning. It's important to note that teacher turnover is low, which was fabulous because Jack became very attached to them. All along, I have genuinely felt that Jack was loved and cared for. But this became even more apparent as he learned to walk, and would run excitedly in in the morning, and then when he learned to talk and was able to tell us how much he loves his Duck Pond friends and teachers. We'll miss Duck Pond but remain extremely grateful for the wonderful early care they gave our son and the peace of mind they gave his parents.
