Overall have at least $3-350/ea cash on hand PLUS make sure you have a CA fishing license Pros: *Capt knows his shit and gets us to the spots where you're reeling them up like you're it's going out of style. *Deckhands are EXCELLENT and really cool dudes that'll take care of you. Please tip them well. Cons: *Capt is a bit of a used car salesman and kind of an ass. When we called to verify the price a day ahead he said, "two bills per should cover you." Which is confusing when your website says $130; one would assume $200 is plenty--if that's the case. I'm not begrudging him for raising prices, since he has to limit the amount of passengers due to covid regulations, but at least tell me the real cost. I went out Friday for a rock cod Lingcod combo. Great trip , We arrived at 5am and we're back around 3:30 with limits, The captain Rick was super informative, The deck hands and crew were on point, super helpful, They explained what to do and would really take care of you when you needed a hand . If you never tried ocean fishing do not be afraid this crew will help you out, Bring warm clothes and a backpack so when it warms up you can put them in it. I appreciated Mike he helped me when my line got tangled.It is a 40 minute drive from Petaluma and the views of our coast are amazing. I ended up with a ice chest full of fish! read more

So I gave it sometime to think about posting this review. I went out on July 3rd, 2024. This was my first trip with Captain Powers. Important to note in previous years I had booked trips that never happened, cancelled the day before. I was pretty excited. Captain Powers put us on the fish and his deck hands were phenomenal. However, This captain is not friendly to those who want to bring there own gear, or just try something different. He actually yelled at me for using my own gear, said I couldn't use it and said he would give me the right gear. Give meant sold for 25 dollars for 2 weights and a shrimp fly leader. I only caught bait fish with it... so I put my gear back on and caught more Petrole sole than anyone on the boat with the "wrong" gear. The guy spent the entire trip yelling at everyone, I admit he was trying to amp everybody up at... but by mid day it just made the trip annoying. This is the most expensive boat I have gone out on and the least enjoyable. He put us on the fish and that's his job, but it was not pleasant or for the guy that wants to try different methods or save money by bringing his own gear. I was disappointed. read more

A+ experience from our 9/1/19 outing on The New Sea Angler!!! This was our first time boat fishing on the West Coast (and our second time ever), so we're still beginners. Despite our novice capabilities, we left the boat with a massive haul of a beautiful Chinook (King) salmon, a hefty ling cod, and our two-person limit of 20 assorted rockfish, including red vermilion. Needless to say, we were thrilled with this trip and it was made possible by the seafaring knowledge of Captain Rick and the invaluable support from his expert, hard-working crew. Kevin, Logan, and Dana all helped us throughout the entire day. Special shout-out to Kevin, an all around great guy, who shared helpful information and tips with us for each type of fish we were going for during the trip. Kevin also made sure our gear/bait was set up correctly, gave us excellent advice on techniques for catching each type of fish, and patiently answered the hundreds of questions we threw his way. The whole crew was superb and we truly appreciated everyone's help but, honestly, Kevin made the trip for us -- thank you!!! We were also impressed with how well Captain Rick navigated us to various hot spots during the combo rock fish/ling cod/salmon trip -- the fish were biting at each location. It was certainly a productive trip and everyone on the boat left with a good amount of fish to take home. One other highlight from the salmon fishing part -- the whales were out and breaching so we ended up with some good whale watching too. What a bonus on top of great fishing! A few practical things: cash only (best to bring more than you need), wear layers as it gets chilly on the water, rubber/waterproof shoes help, Dramamine especially if you're prone to seasickness, and a small cooler with drinks/snacks/food as you might be on the water for 8-10 hours. We had a great first outing with Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center and look forward to another trip! read more

This was my first charter boat fishing trip. It was so much fun!! There were about 40/45 people on the boat, but even with that many it worked out. The deck hands (Mason/ Dana) were awesome ! Always there when you hooked a fish, gave pointers, did what they could to get the fish. By far the best part! I was able to catch 6 fish though only able to keep 2, so it was worth it! Now to the warning part and why I only rated it 4 stars... this boat is supposed to be a combo fishing trip of rock cod/lingcod/ salmon. That didn't happen. We fished for salmon the whole day. They also only take CASH... for bait, weights, cost of boat trip, everything! You are required to purchase bait, but the bait you don't use you don't get back so be aware. You will lose a lot of weights so bring extra money! Even though there are some negative things I had a blast, my family had a blast and I know what to prepare for next time. I definitely recommend this charter for those wanting to fish and have fun. read more

Our family has been fishing on the New Sea Angler for decades. It has always been a great experience. Rick is great at putting you in the spot for fish. Do you always catch them? Most of the time. But, folks- it's called fishing. There's never any guarantees. My dad, son and I went out yesterday. My son is 10- his first time on the ocean- and he loved it. The boat caught limits of king salmon and rock cod. We each walked away with two gorgeous salmon and 10 rock cods. The deckhands, Dana and Owen, are awesome. They help you with getting your gear set up, untangling lines, netting fish, filleting fish, making sure you're having a good experience. I can't speak to fees on gear as we normally bring our own. We're excited to keep fishing with Rick and his awesome crew. read more

I lost track of how many fish I caught! At least 15 rock fish (I took home my limit of 10), 2 lingcod and 1 Chinook salmon. It was an epic day. Captain Rick knew the best spots and exactly how to fish them, and his deckhand, Dana, was always exactly where he needed to be when he needed to be there. The cost breakdown was $200 to get on the boat, at least $50 in tackle, and $50 in tips and fish processing (filleting). So, it was an expensive day. If you just want the fish you'll save money going to the fish market. But what you are paying for is the experience of it. It's possible you could save money by bringing your own gear, but Captain Rick changes up the fishing based on the conditions and you are better off using the exact gear he suggests and fishing in the way he instructs. So, just plan to buy the gear from him. We arrived at 5 am. The boat left at 6am. We fished a few spots for rock fish from 7-10am. We caught lingcod from 11-noon. Then we trolled for salmon for a few hours. We were back at the dock around 3pm, and I was driving back home by 4pm. I'm sure it all changes daily based on conditions, so don't take this as a standard schedule. It was no fault of the captain's, but I was terribly seasick the whole time. I'm prone to seasickness, but I was hoping it might not happen this time. Conditions were pretty smooth, very little wind, and the boat is pretty big at 67 feet long. Again, no fault of the captain or crew, but it's something to watch out for if you are prone to it. read more

If you go out with Captain Rick you will catch fish and that's what fishing is all about!! You can get crab too. We love it! It's a family tradition for over thirty years. The boat is a little rough in condition but totally authentic as far as fishing boats are concerned. It's totally sea worthy and Rick is a safe and reliable captain and that's what you really want when you send your family out on a boat. Yet again our fishing trip has been canceled out of Bodega Bay on The New Sea Angler. Most of the charter boats are allowed to take out limited loads in the bay area right now, so why not Bodega Bay. The county has said that The New Sea Angler is allowed to take out us hard working law abiding fishermen who paid good money for our licenses and tags. The problem is the county will not open the parking lot at the marina. They have opened the West Side launch ramp and it's much larger parking lot, which is just across the bay. If you feel the need to fish and support the captain and crew of The New Sea Angler call Sonoma County Regional Parks 707-565-2041 and ask them to open it up. The state deemed that recreational fishing is allowed now because it is considered procurement of food. It makes entirely no sense why the parking lot remains closed. read more

I've never been fishing before, on land or sea, so this is not a super professional comment. What I know is that the Captain thoroughly explains everything that is going on, gives good advice while people are fishing to help us do better and moves on when things get slow. He is super enthusiastic about when the bigger fish are landed and lets everyone on the boat know what was just caught, which I found makes it more interesting. The deck hands are incredibly helpful and kind, move fast to get to anyone who needs anything. I only caught six fish, (limit is 10 so pretty good for the time I fished) and that was exciting in itself. But I took Dramamine, thinking i might not take to the sea ... but the Dramamine made me feel sick, disoriented and really weird so I sat out 1/2 of the trip. A couple of the other fishermen where not so kind about my inexperience but most were helpful or at least understanding (but then again, the grouchy guy also threw all the small fish that he caught back into the sea, which I understand is a no-no). Most of the people on the boat were experienced and very experienced. It was fun listening to them talk about different things. They were kind and generous with their stories and shared food, which was a nice surprise and yummy. Our boat was nearly max capacity; I think next time I would like to go out with less people ... lines got tangled a lot and that was really frustrating. Captain told us to start using heavier weights so our lines would not drift so much, which did seem to help, but by that time, I was watching/resting and not fishing. Can't wait to go out again ... minus the Dramamine. Still rocking when I close my eyes but I understand that is part of being a newbie. read more

I don't generally write reviews but will about Rick Powers and the New Sea Angler. Some reviews talk about his tooting his own horn but it is more of a history lesson in the bodega bay sport fisheries. He has been doing this for a looong time and he has every right and responsibility to tell his customers his story. What is wrong for someone talking about his abilities if he backs it up, which in Rick's case he absolutely does. For those who complain I suggest you go elsewhere and try to find any Charter Captain who will do everything possible to find fish for his customers. He will fish long after most other charter boats are back at the harbor. He is responsible for changing many fishing regulations for the industry like boat limits which allow those on the boat who are better at catching than others to share their extra fish with others that they catch so everybody can go home with fish. He pioneered the Sport crab fishery. His deck hand Dana is hands down the best Deck hand in the business, a magician is untangling lines, netting, gaffing fish and all other tasks asked of him. I am not a relative. I am a occasional customer of his that truly understands how difficult his job is, to satisfy the needs of all the fishermen and women on the boat and he does an outstanding job. 7/7/18 fished for chinook w Rick, Dana and Mason. 6:30 a.m. till 3:30? Caught 6 kings kept 4 gave 2 away. Right out front btwn buoys. Steady bite all day today - a first for me in years. Keepers - 40 some odd fish for 30 ppl from just makin it to high 20 something pounders. They bit ALL DAY LONG. Its going NOW! Bring lead! bring layers too it blew in the morning then warmed. Don't do it! You will pay around 200$ for two salmon. Everything is over priced and we didn't even use the "mandatory 35$ bait"! If you decide to ignore this review at least bring your own bait and weights and pole. Because Rick charges for everything. read more

I had to postpone my trip for two consecutive weeks, but finally made it out. It was an early drive over from Sonoma, leaving our residence at 4:00 am, for a 5:00 am arrival. Captain Rick Powers and his crew, Dana and Mason were all very polite and helpful. Captain Powers definitely knew were the fish were. We left the dock a little after 6:00 am and were back in port by 12:30 PM, with limits of rockfish for all 21 anglers, as well as 14 lingcod. Everyone also took home 10 Dungeness crabs. No hesitancy with recommending. For a minimal fee, all of my catch was also filleted. Thumbs up Captain Rick and crew. read more

Not too impressed with this experience. First of all, he has everyone get there 1 1/2 hours before he intends to leave the harbor, and spends half of that time yakking on and on and trying to upsell you and tell you how great he is. It's tiresome, reminded me of a used car salesman. His deck hands are awesome, but the boat experience was chaotic and not clean. He charges you extra for every little thing, doesn't buy back the leads with hooks or weights that are left over, so he can sell them to someone else again. Went on a combo salmon/rock cod trip, unfortunately the salmon weren't biting for any boats, so we spent the whole time rock fishing. It seemed like he was trying hard to find a place where the fish were biting, but he'd tell you to drop your line and 5 minutes later, while the fish were biting, move you elsewhere. We spent a LOT of time not fishing. Won't go on this boat again. read more

My wife bought me this trip as a birthday present. I had been on this boat before for rock fish and ling cod and had a blast. It turned out that the trip I went on this time was for Salmon. I had never fished for Salmon before so I was really looking forward to it. I had been paying attention to the fishing reports and had seen how much salmon was being taken, so I thought this would be great fun and I would have some Salmon to bring home. The fishing trip was 11 hours. During this time I saw several salmon in the 20 pound range taken. Unfortunately in 11 hours I caught one shaker that was too small to be kept. Now I understand that happens sometimes. This is the disappointing part. Near the end of the day, the boat ran over a crab pot. Because of this several people hooked the pot. I happened to be one of the unlucky ones. I ended up losing all of my tackle. Because it was the end if the day, they wouldn't replace it. The captain, Rick, started to go in but made several passes through the area. The bite then picked up, and I watched several people land large salmon, including one gentlemen who hadn't caught any to that point. He ended up with 4, including the largest one of the day. It was really difficult sitting there knowing that if they would have been willing to replace my tackle, I may have had a chance to bring home some salmon. The deck hands worked really hard and were very helpful. I am just unhappy with the way things ended up, especially given the crab pot incident. My wife told me that Rick had said that it was not necessary to bring my own equipment, that they had plenty. I guess thats true unless you hook a crab pot..... read more

Captain Rick applies car salesman techniques to get people to signup and overcharges. You will get fish but so you would with any other party boat. When I called and specifically asked for a salmon fishing trip he said yes, come over. When I asked is the salmon fishing good these days, he said yes. He said to come at 5 am. On top of the 200 per person he sold me rock fishing tackle set and a bag for 30 something dollars. This you could get in a store for less than 10. Then he spent easily 30 to 45 minites rambling about how great he, his trip, his boat, his deckhands, his other boats, his crab combo winter trips are, repeating himself often. We got up at 4am to make it there and had to listen to this crap. Than he provided rockfish/lingcod fishing for about 5-6 hours and at the end provided about 30 min of salmon fishing. Only 2 guys landed one each.Very disappointing. The two deckhands were indeed good guys, very quick and nice and proffessional. While he in a very slick way gets off the hook by saying that conditions dictate what kind of fishing he will be doing for the day, and it is true but in reality he is selling everything to everybody. In my case and probably many others as well, I was tricked to waste a day and spend 500 dollars for 2 people not including the tips to the deckhands for rockfish which I did not care about or want. read more

Rick booked us to go on one of the local six packs. He said it was a nice 28 foot boat and that the price would be $200. We left our house at 3 AM from the east bay and when we got there, we realized the boat wasn't even there. We had to wait until 6 for the boat to arrive. We joked that the boat pulling up was a floating turd. It was maybe 20 feet long and looked like it was from the 1950s. It turned out to be our boat and 4 out of the 6 people immediately left. I wouldn't even pay $50 to go on that boat. In addition he charged me $27 for a pack of squid and a 2.5 pound weight that should have only been $10 max. Rick cost me money, ruined me and my sons day, and sent me away with a fowl taste in my mouth. I will never go on one of his boats and don't recommend people to fish through him. read more

First I have been on party boats since my dad brought me salmon fishing as a wee lad. I also have had two boats 22' Chris Craft and 26' Edgewater. I like to think I know what I am talking about. 1st Capt Rick Powers has bragging rights for the leadership and being a spokesperson sport fishing and party boat fishing. That said, 8/29/19 light load for a combo trip. We started Salmon...it was slow we got a couple near Bodega then meandered south. It was a scratch onesy twosy....we were about to change over to rockfishing about 1PM when it cut loose off 10mile beach. All hogs and slugs...it slowed down and Capt Rick Powers switched us over to Rockfish...limits of quality fish and one giant lingcod dinosaur. We did not get back to the dock until 6pm. This is my point he will fish hard keep his crew and passengers busy trying and if conditions are right full sacks of fish. I have been on when Salmon is dead and we fish for Rockfish. Folks that complain about buying bait or weights or tackle book on another venue but I doubt you will get the possible same result. Other Captains have copied what this pioneer captain has done. I would book again and again with this boat. read more

Worst ocean fishing trip in my memory - Saturday October 13, 2018. Way too many people aboard - over 50, when the boat capacity on the website is 40. We only fished rockfish and ling cod - and even then I spend most of my day untangling lines. Note that Captain Powers does not post weekend fishing reports because he overloads the boats. Weekday trips range from 15-25 people - that would be manageable fishing, but it's doubled up on the weekends. The boat limited on rockfish, some folks caught ling cod, but everyone got tangled up time and time again. It was so bad that you couldn't tell if you had a bite or simply were tangled up again with someone else (or both). The price was over the top for the experience, plus outrageous charges for gear (two 8 oz. sinkers and two rockfish leaders), and bait that was then "pooled" for the boat, and a charge for the rod and reel that didn't work well at all. I suggest steering clear of the The New Sea Tangler. read more
