We have been camping on the Russian River. I've been fishing with my son for a couple days and I can't catch anything. So maybe I have to come to terms with the fact that I am bad at fishing. Anyways I thought we could stack the deck and come here. It was a beautiful day and the lady at the store seemed welcoming and helpful. The facilities are nice and seemed clean. You could enjoy the picnic tables and make a day of it with older kids. We fished from 10:00 (opening) until 12:15 when my kids lost all patience. We tried a few different spinners. Then we bought worms per her recommendation, then even bought powerbait. Anyways we couldn't catch anything. She said they had just stocked the pond this morning. You could even see the fish jumping which made it more frustrating. I will say though in the two hours we were there, maybe 15 poles were in the water. During that time frame not a single person hooked a fish. So, hopefully it's not just my problem. I felt bad for the guy next to me. He had his grandson with him and he had driven 3 hours to try to manufacture a good fishing experience for the little guy. So, if you have similar ideas, please be warned there is no guarantee here. It's $10 per person to enter. We had our own poles. The worms were $8 and the powerbait was $7.50. From what I could gather, catching a fish is around $20. read more

We had such a great experience at Hagemann Farms in Bodega. This is a really cool and family friendly spot to do some fishing, especially if you have kids who are new to it. Matt, the owner, is super welcoming and knowledgeable. He shared that the fish come from Yosemite and include rainbow trout and golden trout, which are a cross between steelhead and rainbow trout. My son caught his very first fish here within a couple of hours, and the excitement was priceless. Definitely a core memory for him and his brother. Check in is simple and costs $10 per person whether you are fishing or not. They have plenty of equipment available to rent, which makes it easy if you do not have your own gear. There is also a small store with snacks, candy, cold drinks, and hot coffee and tea. It was a very cold day, but totally tolerable, and the hot chocolate for the kids was a perfect touch. I want to start off be saying that I am a seasoned fisherman and have fished my entire life. This was more or less to test out the lake to bring my young nieces. I was there from about 12:30-3:00 and that is due to the lake closing during the week early. I do not find that inviting or a good business model if the goal is to have customers come and fish. The other thing that was a bit offensive was charging people $8 to fish. What if I didn't catch anything? I was able to catch a 16 inch rainbow which was amazing only had 3 bites all day long. People who come here need to know that these are in fact farm fish, they get overfed and are spoiled they are not aggressive fish and it takes patience to catch them. So for my fish 16 inches, fee for fishing was a total of $30 that is due to me bringing my own tackle, pole and gear. I could not imagine spending $50 for one person for this experience. When it came to cleaning the sink, scissors were filthy and the facility could be cleaner. If I had this place it would be so much better. The facility is owned by someone rich and is run by a nice lady who rents it. Charges $2 for cleaning. No knives are available so you cannot do much. Think minimums that is what you get. My mom and her friend watched me fish and to my knowledge were not charged anything. Overall it was a nice day. The lake was low, fish were there. Water was too warm and they were jumping you can tell when the water is too warm fish are jumping. Facilities were ok. Would I take my nieces there? No I would not. Not until I see more integrity in the lake, the facilities and equipment. My sister would have to rent everything and it would cost a fortune. Our family wanted to try out fishing. We've gone a few times and never catch anything. Came over the weekend for an afternoon catch and caught 5 altogether (technically caught 8 but 3 escaped). Workers were friendly and helped us go over what to do after catching fish. They had all the tools you'd need (rods & reels, nets, worms, ice for fresh fish home, etc). After we came up at the end of our day, one of the workers (didn't catch her name) cleaned our fish and I asked if I could watch and learn. Then she asked if I wanted to try and I was up for it, so she was there to talk me through gutting the fish. It was a fun experience and I'd come back with my family another day! It's a nice place to spend a couple hours, but we were, unfortunately, among the minority who suffered from the lack of professional help on the shore, as my husband and son aren't very knowledgeable about fishing, despite my son's enthusiasm for it. This trout farm is a fantastic place to bring a little kid to who has never fished before. Easy to get to, they have rods, bait and nets for you. There are lots of fish planted in the ponds so catching is a sure thing. The day is very fun for kids. The price for the fishing, you have to pay for people who are not fishing too. You pay for cleaning, you pay per fish per size. You get the theme here, you pay a lot so your kid can have an awesome experience, and they will. You just have to pay. I brought my five year old here yesterday for his very first fishing trip, something I had done with my older kid and he had very much enjoyed it. To my dismay, it seems the operators have basically stopped stocking the pond with fish. I had built up my son on coming here and getting to catch some fish, and he was devastated that he didn't catch anything. Second trip we caught 4 fish. One of the fish looked diseased, one side of the fish was really bad looking, swollen, red, diseased. We were told that we would have to pay for this fish also, and they did their best to convince us that "it should be alright to eat". Not one of the people in my fish loving family wanted to eat that fish. If I was starving and this was the only food available, I might try it, but I am not starving, and I am paying $10-$13 for this fish that we are throwing away. I'm the end, the kids had fun because this place doesn't require any patience to wait to catch a fish, but it is really expensive if you want the fish for food, and questionable as to weather or not the fish are safe to eat. PS, the lake is a very unnatural green/blue color. I asked why and was told that they add a color to the water to decrease algae growth. I was also told that the owners accidentally put in 2 bottles of tint instead of one bay accident. Yet another reason I don't want to eat their fish. read more

Very easy drive. Place was clean but somewhat bare. Not a lot of scenery. Lots of chairs and tables. Not a lot of fish. In fact, we had 4 fishing poles going and never caught a fish in 3 hours time. Admission fee is for everyone, even the non-fisherman, so it can get pricey. I really expected my grandkids to get some fish since it was a stocked pond but it just did not happen. Only saw one other person during that time catch one fish. There were probably 12 poles in the same time we were there. Quite a few were saying they were getting bites. Not sure if we will return. Will try the other place out on Calistoga and see if we get better luck. read more

Kind of out there in the middle of I don't know where, the family fills this small lake with so much rainbow trout that catching some is inevitable. I never caught fish for eating before, and we relied on the help from a kid to show us how to cast the poles. The poles we rented there were fine for this lake. In two-three hours, my son and I caught five rainbow trout. The more experienced fishers caught more. I started with the worms, but my son had better luck with the power bait. Most of the fish grabbing the worms got away. Nice thing about the power bait is it was still on the hook after he caught them. Spent more than $80 to catch those five fish, but it was worth it for the experience. Kids and beginner adults get the good feeling of catching fish. They gutted the fish and put it in ice. Biggest fish was 10". I chose to fry the fish in a pan rather than bake them, and they were delicious. Great place to bring the family and bring another family too! We didnt catch fish for first two hours but then figured it out after asking around - then it was easy! 1. Get the plastic container of live worms in soil (from the shop here). You need to intertwine a long fat piece of worm all thru the hook. That way, the fish then has to bite the whole thing and cant just nibble. 2. In addition to the worm, we also used the orange "power bait" which is a bright orange foamy little ball. Fish really attracted to that. 3. Fishing off the lone pier helps as it gets the bait into deeper water. If you just take the rental fishing pole (which has a stale piece of worm sticking out but not intertwined), its tough to make it work with the steps above. read more

I only wish i could give 10 stars. Matt and Deanna were amazing! This was my second time visiting with a friends son. We needed help with a tangled line and then a smaller hook, and then a lesson with hooking the fish as we were oh so close a half dozen times but the fish always escaped our hook. Matt recognized we needed help and asked if I would be okay with helping to which I said YES! Within 30 minutes we had 3 fish that he had caught on his own. Just went today and as previously stated, they provide gear if you wish, for 5$ per person with a net and stringer. Or if you prefer to bring your own gear like myself and my son, it's 3$ per person and they'll provide the net and the stringer if you would like. No charge for parking but they charge per fish at the end of the day based on inches. They don't want u to throw any back bc they don't often survive after being thrown back, but they said if u don't wish to keep some, to let them know. As far as success on this day, it was incredible! Every group we saw there caught between 6-8 fish in just a couple hours, our group included. Every cast had a bite within a maximum of 2min every time. I know that the day before on 8/24/16 they planted a large amount of trout, so that may have helped in the action. They were very forthcoming about the information during a phone call, so possibly planning to come right after a time like that might help As far as what works best here, we had 100% of our luck on a bobber with worms (which they sell there). We had a pole on the bottom with power bait and had not one bite in the exact same spot. They told us in the office that the pond is a maximum of 28 ft deep at its deepest point and that some of the larger fish tend to go more towards the far end of the pond and towards a small cove near the tree line. They also said that the action heats up right when they reopen in april. We, along with all the other groups, stuck to the corner closest to the main office and had all our success they. All in all, we had a great time and it was an excellent place for my son to go fishing for the first time. The secret spot is the eddy in the grove of trees. Cast ten feet out near the stick but not to close because you can get snagged. It generally takes one-five minutes for a bite. The fish size is 5-15 inches or one - five pounds I know this because I have been there to many times. read more

I've been to this trout fishing spot twice. Once was over ten years ago; that is generally a good memory, including one of my visiting son casting and throwing my pole completely into the pond! But, hey, we caught fish, had some laughs, and fun for all. But this most recent time, in late March of 2021, I initially had a little "sticker shock" and then ended up feeling ripped off. Not only were we charged money per head just to come in (even if someone was not fishing), there were rather expensive pole rentals and buying overpriced worms for bait. A caveat of that is that the fish are much more partial to salmon eggs and other artificial bait that mimics their hatchery food, but the inexperienced people buy worms (thus increasing the revenue stream) because "that's what fish eat". I guess I can't fault Hagemann's for being sharp shopkeepers. After paying for the fish I caught, I was a bit shocked to see it came to $52-for 6 small fish. The larger the fish, the higher the charge for it; a 10 inch trout cost $10. After coming home and looking over the receipt in more detail, I discovered I had been RIPPED OFF-the size of the fish were exaggerated anywhere between 2-3 inches. I've been trout fishing for over 30 years, and know the size of a 5 or 6 inch trout compared to a 9 inch fish. Wanted to take the grandson fishing; he was more interested in netting. But next time I have visiting grandchildren and want to take them fishing, I go anywhere else but here. read more

Bottom line this is an awesome place. The staff are friendly and helpful, and my girls (ages 5 and 7) caught 6 trout! We were fishing from the shore right next to the dock using night crawlers with a bobber as the staff recommended and also a kastmaster lure for dad. It's not cheap but you are paying by for the experience; if you want cheap fish stop by the 99 Ranch in the way home you won't be disappointed :) If you want to catch lots of fish here is what you do. #1 Go early, like when they open as the fish are active when it's cooler. We arrived at 11, which I was afraid was too late, but the fish were biting within 30 seconds of dropping the bait in and there weren't many people. This pond is extremely well stocked with perfect kid sized rainbow trout 7"-9" and they are hungry. By 1pm the pond filled up with people which was also about the time the fish stopped biting due to being too hot so showing up at 1 or 2 is a good way to be disappointed. #2 if you have very young kids like me let dad (or mom) do the casting and the kids take it from there or fish off the pier. The fish are closer to the middle of the pond and we'd get bites immediately while the people next to us let their kids do the casting and they were too short and didn't see any action. read more

Did some research and found this place on Yelp, was surprised to see it was the only fish farm open during the week. We arrived about 11am and the place was pretty much a ghost town, with only a few other people there. Walked up got our pools and earthworms. Asked where the best place in the pond and was told by the dock, which turned out to be a great spot. Within a few minutes we had our first bite. Being this was my 5 year olds first time fishing I had him reel it in, it was a beautiful 10 inch rainbow trout. Over the next two hours we caught 10 fish, ranging from 9 to 11 inches. Walked our bounty back up to the shop and the help cleaned the fish and showed my son all the insides of a fish, stomach, heart and so on, he thought that was very cool. They bagged our catch in ice and the we settled the bill. After all, we paired about $65 for the whole experience. If you want to introduce a child to fishing this is the place to go, they do have some shaded areas, picnic benches and BBQ pits if you want to cook up right there! read more

After a weekend of not catching fish in other places nearby we were recommended this place by a chance camping acquaintance. My three kids and I were not disappointed. Although I had a pole and tackle I opted to rent theirs. They charge $2.00 to use your own poles or $3.50 for theirs. I rented theirs because the poles were already set up the way they knew was best, and we had horrible tangle luck with the poles we had been using. We had no problems with their gear or with catching fish. My 3 kids lit up with delight every time their bobber sunk down and they got to reel in a fish. Having said that, the "no catch and release policy" means that you have to keep and pay for whatever you catch, which we found usually meant small 9-10 inch fishes. However I think the policy makes sense since the fish we caught would otherwise have probably died after the hook was removed. Quick Tip: Use a smaller hook with the full worm. Be patient and just watch. I found that if I used the full worm the little fishes would eat at it and not get caught and eventually a bigger fish, for us 11", will eventually eat the rest with the hook. You could also try using a larger hook to space out the time a bit more as well. So ultimately the visit was worth the $55 I spent for the 2 poles, worms, 8 fish (two each) we caught and were cleaned for us by the professional and pleasant enough staff, and the 1.5 hours we spent there. If we go back I might bring a barbecue to cook and eat the fish there as well. Bonus: The kids loved bull frog hunting and the staff never said anything to us, although there is a sign that says no frog catching. I think they may be missing another revenue opportunity there... frog legs anyone? The 5-star review is meant for what it is. You will catch fish and I think what you pay is fair for the service and the location. It is a perfect stop on your way to or from a camping or Russian River stay. read more
