I moved to Austin a year ago and it's been a challenge to find someone to cut my hair. Not that there aren't great places... but it's just finding that one where you click with the person and you want to keep going back. And with Amy here at Nines Men's Grooming... I have found that place! I don't have much hair, but that doesn't mean I don't want it to look good. I've been to several places throughout Austin; some places had me in and out of their chair in what seemed like seconds. Other places just gave me the impression I was in the wrong place and others were just "ok". I came across the "Nines" reviews and figured, I'll give another place a try. And one of the hardest things is who to pick to cut your hair. I randomly picked Amy but clearly that was a great choice. I'm sure everyone working here does amazing work, but I was fortunate to choose Amy. She is very friendly and was ready the minute I walked in the door. Very accommodating, she offered me water, soda, beer... I just had the water but I think next time I'll enjoy a drink! Before I moved to Austin, I had been going to the same person for years so it was very easy. All I had to do was make an appointment and she knew exactly what to do. I'm one of those who prefer the person cutting to give me suggestions on what they think would look good and Amy was more than happy to offer suggestions. I wanted to cover up a little gray and it had been months since my last haircut and it was looking pretty shaggy so I needed a complete "overhaul". Amy seemed to understand what I was looking for and made some recommendations which I went for. The haircut was enjoyable; I've had other people who are sometimes a bit careless but Amy is very gentle and thorough. When it came to the coloring... again, she took the lead. I had complete trust in her and she used a color she felt would look best and it was perfect! And at the end, she did the neck shave which is so underrated. It took awhile but I have found a great place to get my hair taken care of and hopefully I can keep going to Amy. read more

Luz was great. She took time to ask what I normally go for with my haircuts and checked along the way to make sure it was what I wanted. I have hard hair to cut I've been told since it's thick and just lots of it. The prices are a little higher than most places , however, very worth the attention to detail and experience you're getting. You definitely get what you're paying for. The massage and shampoo washout after the cut was an extra nice touch. No one does that anymore and it was nice to go about my day not feeling the itching from hair all over your body since they also provided a clean t shirt to change into before the cut so the shirt I wore in wasn't full of hair on the way out. read more

the haircut was great, the experience was lacking. the location of the nines is on the freeway frontage road with a homeless camp across the street. As i drove up i saw a man shitting into a bucket. i arrived early as the website suggested to get a haircut consultation. I thought the stylist would have suggestions for my hair type and facial structure..... in reality she just asked how i wanted it done. I asked for some input and was told it was my decision. So after i defaulted to my old style ( which i pay $20 for normally but here cost $55 ) the cut was good and the shampoo was nice but nothing special. then when i went to pay i was asked how much of a tip would be leaving, it made me feel likei had to tip larger than normal so i handed another 20 over. In short i got a 20 dollar haircut for 75. never again read more

This review is specifically for Bessie. The Nines is a great space and the service is great from when you walk in, but every barber/hair stylist is a little different, and I've only ever gotten my hair cut by Bessie. Over the last year I've come to the Nines twice every three months or so on average and I've walked out feeling great every time. Bessie takes cutting hair and making her clients look good more seriously than anyone I've ever had cut my hair. The thought and care she puts into making me look good is unparalleled. I usually just walk in and ask her to make me beautiful, as I don't know anything about how my hair should be cut, my beard should be trimmed, or how either should be styled. It's been a year now that Bessie has been cutting my hair and I've never felt better about my look than I do now. She's done everything from cut, shampoo, beard trim, straight razor shave for me and I always feel great walking out. If I could give Bessie 10 out of 5 stars I would. read more

I was visiting Austin from out of town and needed a good but basic men's haircut. This place received great reviews on Yelp so I decided to give it a try. When I stopped in, there were two stylists sitting around and yet they wouldn't take me since they said it was by appointment only. When I asked if anyone could do me a favor and squeeze me in, I was again told that it's by appointment only. First, turning away business seems to be a poor business model to me. Second, I'd rather go someplace else to deal with this kind of pretentious bs. I totally understand if the place was busy. But I was literally the ONLY person there and neither stylist would get up to give me a 15-minute haircut. That's a shame. read more

I'm 37. I've been poor my whole life. I grew up with Supercuts. That's the past. I made the appointment last night, went in today, saw Chatoh, and she opened my eyes to a new world. I have never had a really long beard, but due to laziness it grew out this year and people seemed to like it. I recently got annoyed with it as I didn't know anything about how to care for a beard. So I decided to leave it to a professional, and chose The Nines based on reviews and location. I was blown away the second I walked in the door. It was so relaxing, comfortable, and just plain pleasant to be there. I got a little complimentary Dr. Pepper! Largely scowling, and maintaining your slowly increasing debt. There is no such thing as "treating yourself". Changing that term to "maintaining your sanity" seems more accurate. Places such as this, take all the guesswork out of that for you. From the glass half-filled with Bulleit. To the comfortable barber chair. From the massage chair in the lounge, to the soft lighting during your treatment. This is the place where your conversation flows easier than your beard trim. I have been very excited to try this place out since a couple of my office buds go to get groomed here regularly and are always looking sharp so I decided to go in, since well word of mouth is everything! It sounded so good to be true compared to a lot of these other barber shops! I loved the atmosphere and the place's "look" was cool. Love the coffee and beer offer, they even offer massages! It was a pretty good cut for a pricey place. Although I can not lie the customer service was beyond distasteful and no tact what so ever is the main reason I have to give a bad review. I later found out it must be a fairly new employee who cut my hair (from the people I know because they stick to the same person they get cut there by) I don't know if she was having a bad day but she seemed very rushed, sarcastic, and rude kind of like a know it all (which is probably why her bio on their website is written in first person aside from everyone elses). Not sure if I'll be going back just based on that experience. Not trying to get cut by speedy Gonzales or have to listen to someone complain about their daily problems for the price it cost sorry! I certainly was not about to say anything to jeopardize the quality of my cut! Bessie is great! I can't speak to the rest of the gals, but if they are anything like her, then they are on point. I was looking for somewhere that took a little more time and was a little more consultative then your typical barber. Bessie and the nines did not disappoint. She talked through the cut with me and then honed it in to be exactly wheat I was looking for. The whole experience is pretty dope. Private room, topo Chico (or whiskey), hair washing with warm towels on your face and just general good vibes. They definitely earned a return customer with me. I've had 2 great haircuts out of 2 visits here. One by Dani and one by Lauren. It's pricey, but so is living in Austin, so I respect places that try to pay their employees a living wage. They have a cool massage chair and offer beer and coffee, although last time I didn't really get the feeling that they wanted me to hang out and relax in the lounge, but I'm also a very socially awkward person so that could be on me. I have quite difficult hair. Straight, thick and lots of it. I moved from Indianapolis to Temple,TX and I struggled to find a place that did not give me the standard buzz cut or a salon that did not leave my hair looking like I was given the standard old lady cut ( I am a male). The place is awesome, great environment, think of XX character "themost interesting man in the world" ( he does not always get a haircut but if he did he would to the nines). Dani was awesome, we talked about my hair, I explained her my problems, also told her of some new styles I would be willing to try. She mentioned that before getting to know my hair and before cutting it at least a couple of times she would prefer not to make any drastic changes. This shows you how professional she is.
