I could do nothing for myself, not even stand on my own or walk. The next morning I knew that I was in great loving hands. Paulette and Rayon have been amazing caregivers. Taking care of my surgical wounds with such care. I had physical therapy twice a week and on the off days Rayon and Paulette encouraged me to get up and walk with both of them walking with me and one following me with the wheel chair. Paulette took care of my daily needs. Making sure I was showered or bed bathed every day and doing my laundry daily. We all have call buttons and they are on call 24/7. Rayon is the chef and when I tell you the food is good, it is delicious! Delivered to my room at the same time daily if I did not opt to join other residents at the dining room table. This beautiful home in a beautiful and safe neighborhood in Scottsdale can accommodate 10 residents. We all have different needs but all are cared for as lovingly and carefully as I am. The rooms are spacious with lovely bedding, flat screen tvs and wifi. Family and friends are always welcome. Pinki, the director/owner is equally as loving and caring. My son researched different Assisted Living places while I was in the hospital and after touring Kierland Sanctuary and speaking with Pinki, he found it to be the best match for me. The price is comparable to other places in Scottsdale. Pinki, Paulette and Rayon have become my family and I love them and will miss them terribly.

I was very careful before moving him again and we looked at a lot of places. Scottsdale North (SN) came highly recommended by the placement agency we were working with. Simon, the owner of SN, is a saint. He is extremely patient and caring and puts up with a lot from my cranky dad. His care givers are very nice and attentive. Matt, who used to be full-time but is now only there on Saturdays, is the most thoughtful caring person you could imagine. My dad was very lucky to have Matt looking after him. My dad needs to be closely monitored for diet and water consumption due to congestive heart failure. I credit Simon with being the reason my dad is still alive. My dad moans and groans about his diet and water restrictions but he is not ready to die and their care is keeping him alive. He has not been in the hospital for over a year now, which is a record for him in the past 3-4 years. The SN house is like a mansion and is very nice. There are a maximum of ten residents. The food quality is good but there are times that my dad will say he did not like what was being served and skip the meal. My dad complains about the food but he also complains when I used to take him to Fleming's or Houston's. There have only been a few times where I had to ask them to "elevate their game", but I can partially attribute that to the difficulty in dealing with my dad. In those cases they were understanding and responsive. This is a very tough job that requires a huge amount of patience and caring and they do fulfill that requirement well. There are less expensive options but they do not compare to SN. If this place is in your budget range, I can highly recommend it.

When I'm old and need assisted living, Sunrise Assisted Living of Scottsdale is where I want to…read morelive. Have you checked out assisted living places recently? They're absolutely nothing like the nursing homes of days gone by. These places are lovely. Long gone are those grim nursing homes hallways with that distinctive "nursing home" smell and patients moaning out for help from their room. A few years ago, my mother-in-law needed assisted living. My husband and I performed an expensive search of places in the greater Phoenix area. All of them were surprisingly expensive. To help offset some of those costs, people are often eligible for VA assistance or long-term nursing care insurance policies. With the majority assisted living places costing about the same, we focused on the quality of lifestyle that could be provided for our loved one. Sunrise of Scottsdale offers many activities, live entertainment singers + dancers, theme parties, games, field trips, etc. They even offer afternoon happy hours with beer and wine and a few nibbles too. In addition to social activities, a complete kitchen staff caters to the resident's individual dietary needs and food preferences. Importantly, a medical nursing staff is always on the premises, with a physician on call and nearby. Residents are charged a monthly fee according to the level of assistance they need. For example, if a resident can take their own meds, bath and dress independently, that would be cheaper than someone who requires a higher level of care. Should the time come that your loved one needs even more supervised attention, the top (third) floor is dedicated to those with Alzheimer's and other conditions that require extra monitoring. The doors are locked for patient safety so they can't wander off, but the residents are always treated with dignity and kindness. My dear mother-in-law has lived in the independent assisted living area for about four years. She says it's the most beautiful and best place she's lived in her entire life. She tells her old friends that that she's "living in a mansion." Her bedroom suite is private and perfectly sized for a single occupant. Her suite contains a mini-kitchen with a small sink, microwave, and refrigerator. She doesn't really need the kitchenette because she eats her meals in the dining room. However, come to think of it, she does use her suite's mini-refrigerator to stash her whiskey and fun-size chocolate candy bars. Bad habits? Well, yes, but she's 90 years old for heaven's sakes, I think it's okay to cut her some slack.

The Memory Care Unit manager is outstanding and stays directly involved in every facet of her care. She receives weekly welfare checks from Hospice of the Valley and I am provided personal info on her condition and vital signs after those visits. The staff have always been friendly and helpful and the residents genuinely love living here. There is a variety of daily activities for those that want to participate, quality food onsite (all meals included), and plenty of additional amenities that help make living here super convenient. It's also a great location just east of Scottsdale on Shea. The apartments themselves are a great size and the entire facility is clean and vibrant. I'm not sure if this will be "home" for the long term for my mom, but it has been perfect for the time being.

Yesterday, I went to visit them and have lunch with them at their facility's restaurant. From the moment I walked in, I marveled at how new and beautiful everything looked. There was even a slight smell of fresh paint to add to the newness. The decor in the lobby was gorgeous and upscale, with high ceilings, inventive light fixtures, and lots of seating. The restaurant offers sit-down service. They have daily specials and a soup of the day. They had a good variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts for lunch. The brownie was my favorite part of the meal. It was decadent! This facility allows for small pets. There is a dog run area outside. There's also a heated pool and a gorgeous seating area outside with a large television mounted on the wall. My friend showed me the activity schedule. They offer many fitness and enrichment classes, such as art classes in the art studio. There are also bridge, rummikub, and mahjong groups that meet on a regular basis. This facility is not yet at 100% capacity. I would definitely recommend booking a tour if you are in the market for retirement living, assisted living, or memory care.

Maryvilla is one of the few places that actually have 24/7 nurses that makes sure the loved one gets the best possible care - Been going for about a year. There's two dining rooms with gourmet food, great 24/7 security - and there's 24/7 activities that happen there. There is few pianos to play on, a small arcade area, a library. There's a huge living room where residents watch movies and the view from the balcony areas is great during July 4th fireworks in the area. No complaints here, you may see protected wild life like Javelins in the area but thats typical in Scottsdale. This area is also next to Fairmont Princess Hotel so out of state loved ones can visit and stay at walking distance. So this place may be more expensive than most places that just let the residents sit around - I seen interaction with residents with the caring nurses that's been there for many years. A++ place, would highly recommend.

Plus, you will pay VERY high monthly dues on top of the buy-in fee. From day one, we were dissatisfied with Maravilla. From the dishonest salesperson misrepresenting the unit we were "sold", to management wringing every dollar they could out of us when we decided to leave for better accommodations, we often felt like we were being taken advantage of or mistreated. I can only assume that many of the people on staff at Maravilla have no aging loved ones, because if they did, they would behave with more compassion and humanity than we ever saw from them. My advice...Keep shopping and you'll find something better. It might not be as pretty as Maravilla, but the people will probably care about your loved ones more.
