The old bag is a staple of downtown Delaware. I've been visiting this location for over a decade because I grew up in Delaware but my most recent visit was fantastic. They've got such a great patio so that helped the evening. I ordered the French dip and a side salad and both were sooo good. This is one of the best French dips I've ever had. STOP AND READ! Don't go here. Save your money! They don't acknowledge you when you walk in! They take forever to seat you! The waiter reeks of cigarette smoke! The table was absolutely disgusting- see pic! We asked for sanitizer and he said he would bring it back and never bought it back. We have an immunocompromised child and cannot risk her eating off a dirty table. I had to go to bathroom to get a paper towel and soap and wash my own table off. Why??? Took the whole family (9) here at 5:30 Sat Night during the Buckeye Game for our granddaughters 18th birthday. If you're thinking about going here,.....DON'T. The first thing we were told by our server was the soda pop had no carbonation. Things went completely downhill from that moment. I've had bad service before and bad food before but not usually at the same place at the same time. We waited for 30 minutes to get our drinks and when I walked out to the bar to check on what was holding things up, there were just two customers sitting there and the bartender was no where to be seen. Then when I finally complained, the Mgr came out to our table and barked at us in a condescending tone. "What do you need here?" Or something to that effect. My six boneless Wings were cold when served and the French onion soup had no flavor. We asked to start with soup before the meal, but all was brought together. The soup was stone cold and for the check we had to point out the uneaten soup to have it taken off the check. Stopped into The Old Bag around 3:30 with two other women today and our 4 children (combined). We waited at the hostess stand for probably 10 minutes. The bartender was feet away and ignored us. A server walked by, approached the bartender and said, "why are all these people here", then continued to ignore us. Meanwhile, two servers were in the back room (empty) looking at their phones. Saturday afternoon and no hostess? But also, if you don't want business, this isn't the right field for you. Such a disappointment! We have patronized three locations in the past, most often Delaware OH, and the food has been spot-on. Yesterday it was such a disappointment. Not a fluke; management has taken a turn for the worse. Be forewarned: their famous Fish and Chips is no longer battered and fried. They tout an "Eddie's" spicy version but last night they were out of that batter. I ordered the regular battered and the fish arrived not battered but instead dusted with flour. This was an overall terrible experience and I should have known better than to try it again. My wife loves the chili and cornbread that is usually only available in the colder months. They haven't had it for a while and brought it back this year. The cornbread is no longer the really sweet kind (against my better judgement, she used to LOVE the sweet cornbread), nor is it unlimited like it used to be. It was a completely tasteless bread-like consistency. Not a good cornbread like consistency either, just bread-like. It was just terrible. Also, her chili was barely lukewarm and just average in taste. My fish and chips were terrible too. Back a few years ago when we used to frequent this location, the fish and chips were always hot and tasty. The fish today was a sad excuse for a fish and chips place. Dry, barely warm, and generally just seemed like it had been sitting in the back under a heat lamp for about 20 minutes before it was brought out to us. The fries were tepid and limp for extra sadness. We also never received our appetizer we ordered. We couldn't ask about the lack of appetizer because the entire staff seemed to be MIA the whole time we were there. Also, while we were waiting to be seated, two other couples came in and ended up leaving because there was no hostess to seat us. If you are a fan of not receiving what you order, never seeing a waitress, getting your food after it's been under a heat lamp for 20 minutes, and generally poor service - all with a premium price - this is definitely the place for you! Up until the pandemic, this was literally a weekly trip for us. The service has always been spotty at best, but the food was always excellent and I'm willing to put up with the service for the good food. Now that it somehow has worse service, the food has gone WAY downhill, and the prices are 50% higher on some items than they were a few years ago, we will definitely not be returning. It is so bad that we went to LJS out on 36/37 just to 'scratch the itch' of edible fish and chips before we went home. Talk about a low bar to clear. Go to LJS and spend $8 and get better food than this place. I really don't know how they are staying open at this location. I can't remember the last time I didn't leave a tip, anywhere at all, but I didn't leave one today. Why would I? I just spent $45 and got below average food, terrible service, and had to go somewhere else to get what I wanted. If they want the tip, go get my $8 from LJS. I have no plans to return to this location. Sorry this turned into a rant. TLDR: No hostess, bad service, drinks wrong, no appetizer, food was 'old' and relatively tasteless, expensive, Long John Silver's is better. read more

I've ate hear many times and have liked everything that I've ever eaten here. I stick with my old stand by the traditional fish and chips with a side of fried corn. I washed it down with a Troegs Lucky Holler Hazy IPA. The waitresses are always attentive and very nice here. The staff was nice and our waitress was very nice, funny , and helpful. The food was amazing and especially loved the bread pudding. Horrible . First time in along time my husband has not wanted to leave a tip. Daughter friend food was never rung in. When it came out it was awful n she didn't eat it. They did take off out bill. Hubby order fish and chips and she asked how he wanted it cooked. He said just like what it says. Fried in both of our meals we're not hot. Hubby and I visited Bag of Nails Pub on a Monday afternoon. We were immediately greeted and chatted with kindly by not only our server but also a manager and another server. Hubby had the soup and salad. He chose the Clam Chowder and Caesar Salad. I had the Classic Reuben with steak fries. The food was good and service was excellent. The only downside is parking. So, took a chance on The Old Bag of Nails and let me tell you it was worth the chance we took! The hand breaded mushrooms were spectacular, crispy and golden and the shrooms were large and meaty. They served a horseradish dipping sauce that was surprisingly excellent! Then they recommended the Classic Fish & Chips, hey! English Pub, Fish & Chips? No brainer, so we went for it! They do not skimp on the portions of fish! And the fry was perfect! The flakey white fish was bathed in a golden crispy beer batter and cooked to perfection! The chips were large and tasty. I went wild with the malt vinegar bottle and did them justice with a full shower of malted goodness, it set the fish off the chart! The bloody Mary was awesome, extra spicy and flavorful and had the right amount of celery seasoning that gave it that garden fresh kick! The staff was really friendly and interactive, even said hi to the dish washer who was nice and smiled happily back! Excellent place to spend an early evening for a great dinner! It had been three years (before the pandemic) since I tried this place. It used to be on my regular restaurant rotation. Never again though. I went in today (Tuesday) around 3:05 to get a sandwich and salad. Sat at the bar. The place is completely empty except for a handful at the patio. It took at least 3 minutes for the server/bartender to even acknowledge me. I asked for water and a menu and the Wi-Fi password. She mumbled it still looking at the register. Didn't hear her. She looked over and repeated it, got it. I started to give her my order and she turns her back again and I cannot hear what she is saying. I tell her I can't understand her when she's facing away. Then she gets right in my face in a mocking, patronizing manner and asks is that better? At that point I was done, cancelled the order and said I'm going somewhere else. I said it was a pleasure meeting you as I was walking out to which she yelled what!? I'm not sure if it was blatant ageism, she hates her job or what her issue was. But never again. read more

We should have realized what was to come when the hostess handed me our menus and table service. One waitress for the entire restaurant. Why not close down a section if you don't have the staff to cover it. 40 minutes to get waters and an hour for drinks. Luckily we ordered dinner with the drinks. Our food was great. Everyone loved what they ordered. Asked for a Togo box and an extra dressing to go. Got the box, no dressing, asked a 2nd time. Our server Janice returned, no dressing and gave us another tables check. After another 15 minutes without her returning we had to go inside to the bar to get the correct check and pay our bill. On our way out, we passed Janice near another table. My wife mentioned that we never did get the to go dressing that we wanted. Janice replied that she was working alone and was just too busy to worry about everyone's needs. My wife replied, how disappointing. To which Janice replied, why don't you just never come back. Four guests, we spent well over $100, still tipped accordingly, and were treated quite poorly. Like I stated in the beginning, we knew service was probably going to be slow. Yesterday evening (12/2/2022) my family decided to eat out as we enjoyed the local Christmas festivities in our community. We all agreed that Old Bag of Nails sounded great as the menu had something for everyone. When we got there the wait was only 20 minutes, which seemed reasonable, so we put our names in and waited. More and more customers came in after us. After about 18 minutes of waiting we noticed a family the same size as ours had been seated before us (note they had just arrived). We politely asked the hostess why they were seated before us. She looked at us and without flinching said "they were being difficult so we just seated them". So the lesson learned is if your a jerk at Old Bag of Nails you receive wonderful service but if you are patient and courteous, then you will just have to wait until they are accommodated. So what did we do...we kindly let the hostess know that we would be leaving and taking our business elsewhere. read more

It's first Friday in Delaware. Just to see what's going on. It isn't too crowded and service is been pretty quick. We sat at the end of the bar and the first thing I noticed it smelled like old stale beer. Like the place hadn't been cleaned for a while. This business needs a total makeover I think that would help it out. The inside of the bar is looking dated and could use refreshed. The beer definitely could be colder. I don't like just cool draft beer I like it cold. I think a check should be performed on the refrigeration system of the kegs to see if they are up to snuff. read more

I have visited Old Bag a few times in the past but have been reluctant to return because the service has always ben extremely slow. Luckily this visit our service was much better. We got seated right away and our drinks came soon after. Although it did take a while for our food to come it was hot and fresh. I got the clam chowder and it was nice. Big hearty chunks of potato. I also ordered the fish reuben with tater tots. I really enjoyed the fish sandwich on the toasted bread with coleslaw. The gator tots were hot and crispy. My husband ordered the spicy fish dinner. We were really surprised by how spicy it was. We like spicy but it was a little too much for us. We will just go for the regular fish next time. All in all it was a pleasant trip out and I will not be as reluctant to return next time. read more

A great place to eat in the downtown Delaware scene. They have delicious all you can eat fish and chips. I usually go for the fish or the reuben sandwich when I go. They have a large outdoor patio area with a second bar when the weather is nice. The staff is friendly and attentive. There is nearby parking and free parking after 6pm. It is a pub so it can get a bit loud sometime but a great place to take the family or groups. Whether going here for lunch or dinner Old Bag of Nails is highly recommended. read more
