However, the true beauty in this home was not the home or antique pieces, Bernette, the owner, is the true gem when you stay at Shadowlawn. She goes above and beyond for her guests and truly cares for the people staying in her home. Mississippi is known for hospitality and Bernette epitomizes the spirit of hospitality in Mississippi. When you talk with Bernette, it is like talking with a friend you have known for years. The breakfast she makes is five-star quality and made from scratch. The rooms were very comfortable and well-designed and decorated. We slept like babies. We also were staying during a MSU gameday weekend, and the rates for our stay were great, especially considering the alternatives were very pricey and do not come with Bernette and her amazing personality and attitude. We highly recommend anyone visiting Columbus or Starkville to stay with Bernette at Shadowlawn. Travel down the rustic Main Street in this little town in the south and you feel like you've gone back in time. Near The Natchez Trace Parkway and numerous Civil War Battlefields, Belmont is a great place to unplug! Once you arrive, the hosts have made sure your stay is nothing short of epic by thinking of everything! We have stayed at quite a few B&B's over the years but nothing on the scale of this place. The kitchen is better equipped than mine at home with every pot or pan or dish you could ever need. The two bedrooms each have an extremely comfortable bed and flat screen TV as well as individual split A/C and heater. The bathroom comes appointed with monogrammed towels, a full soaker tub, (and I don't know why this is my favorite but) a fog free lighted mirror. The quarter sawn oak floors complete this epic find and add to the warm feel throughout. If you are a B&B person, or have any reason to stay within driving distance of "The Loft", do yourself a favor and BOOK NOW! You will not be disappointed!

Ute loves the animals they save so much and she gave my wife and teenage daughters a great tour of the property and introduced them to the longhorn cattle, the sheep, goats and so many other animals on property. She had all the answers to all our questions about Houston, the Trace and nearby attractions. I loved the house and her fantastic antiques. The rooms we saw were decorated very nicely. All the rooms are upstairs so she had a table set up with a coffee maker and cups on that floor for those of us who like coffee the minute we wake. There was also a small cooler of soft drinks with a small basket of snacks and bottles of water close by. I thought our room was very quiet, especially being on the front corner facing both streets. The breakfast was a very good Southern one with biscuits, grits, scrambled eggs, potato casserole, bacon and sausage. We didn't eat again til dinner. The only thing negative was the room not having its own thermostat. We like a very cold room to sleep in and ours could have been a little cooler. Other than that our stay was perfect. My partner and I stayed in the vintage airsteam Tonomo and other family members stayed in the three other living spaces (one other airstream and two suites in the main buildings). Everything was well thought out, comfortable and beautiful. Smith Lake itself is a treasure and I will remember early morning paddle boarding as one of my favorite Alabama experiences. Kayaking, swimming, tubing and floating are great too. Alex and Jim, the husband and wife who own and run the B and B, are what really stand out. From stellar breakfasts, interesting conversation and a wealth of tips about the area, these two are charming and knowledgeable hosts. A wonderful combination of private and social spaces and sunsets that I will remember for a long time. I strongly recommend this as a true get away.
