I've driven by Baum Pottery probably 100 times on my way to the Fort Ancient Trading Post. It's an…read moreold house that sits back off the road next to a garage. There's nothing that would lead you to believe that it was anything more except for a small sign that says Baum Pottery in front. I pulled up as Mike and Sharon Baum were meticulously wrapping their wares in newspaper for a long trip to Washington D.C. They welcomed me inside the studio where they spin and fire their work. And as a side note, Mike has the EXACT same voice and inflection as Billy Crystal. I wanted to say something, but I decided against it. The potters were living a dream I think a lot of artists have. Living and working unbothered in a house in the country with everything they need to do their work. And making money at it. The husband/wife team were at ease, hospitable, and happy to have a visitor. They showed me around the garage studio, then into the house for a view of the small gallery. Their work spans a huge range of pottery, all of it gallery quality. Mike apprenticed somewhere in the English countryside thirty years ago. I can only assume it was a good move, because his work is worth every penny.

I could wander around in this store for hours just looking at the beautiful home decor fabrics, all…read morearranged by color, over two floors. But I didn't have to wander much because two well-informed customer service reps were able to direct me. I was looking for fabric to cover my dining room chairs (small DIY project). I described the color and texture of the fabric I was envisioning, and was led exactly to the right bolts of cloth to choose from. One woman worked the downstairs and the other upstairs. I got just what I wanted, quickly. A much better experience than the chain stores for fabric which are quick but without the rich variety of choices found here. Downfall is simply that Waynesville is likely a bit out of the way for many. But plan ahead and make a day of it by visiting the many antique and decor shops in town. Since it was a 40 minute drive for me, I did call ahead to make sure they were open (I'm learning, post pandemic, not to trust what's shown on websites).

They have gone way above and beyond in helping me select fabric for suitable usage. One fabric I picked for outdoor furniture wasn't going to hold up well, and they told me so. They then helped to find a comparable fabric that would stand the test of time. And it has! Their vast selections are high quality and of patterns and types that you can't find at other fabric stores. Prices are fair for your selections, whether high-end or as basic as denim. And they HAVE given me recommendations for quality seamstresses who can make sure their beautiful fabrics turn out as you would expect. The only time I submit ratings for companies on this site is when they go above and beyond expectations, and The Fabric Shack is one of them!
