Spent pride weekend here and besides parking being a bit tricky to figure out, our stay went great! Check in/out were fast, the rooms were clean and neither the floor, room, or elevator had an odor issue. The rooms were clean, had no smell, and were sooo comfortable. We didn't have any issues with the room all weekend. I guess the area the hotel is located can warn people away, but if you know how to conduct yourself and mind your business/surroundings then you should be fine. My friends and I spent lots of time outside at night, walking to and from the hotel often as our transportation since it was really close to many Pride weekend activities. Only problem is if you're going during a busy weekend/time that parking is kinda difficult to find/secure, but I would definitely recommend garage parking over street parking! Try out the Mason O Farrell or the Ellis O Farrell. read more

Booked this hotel with my family after reading some decent reviews. While the hotel itself was fine, it offered very few amenities. The biggest issue was the location--it's surrounded by an area with a noticeable homeless population and visible drug activity, which made us feel uncomfortable walking around. There's very little walkability, and there are plenty of safer, more enjoyable neighborhoods to stay in when visiting San Francisco. I'd recommend avoiding this area if possible. read more

The streets seemed okay during the day, but I didn't feel that safe at night. Parking: There is a self parking garage one block down at 325 Mason St, San Francisco, CA 94102. It's a good, clean, parking garage that charges $38 for 9 to 24 hours. I would not park your car on the street in this neighborhood. Hotel Staff: The hotel staff were all super polite and efficient. They were great. Room: Small, nice, clean, good view. Worth the price. Coffee: Free, decent cup of coffee, but they only serve from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the entryway. We are a touring band from LA traveling up to Oakland, and had a fantastic stay at Hotel Spero in San Francisco. The location was perfect for us, making it an easy trip next day to the venue. The lobby had a very welcoming vibe, and the front desk staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. They even had a complimentary coffee stand in the morning, which was very needed for us to get a good jumpstart to our long day. Our rooms were super clean and comfortable, with great beds (as well as a pull out!) and spotless bathrooms. We also enjoyed the easy access to Jasper's, the restaurant connected to the hotel. Stellar hotel with upscale rooms and excellent customer service at a very reasonable price. I never mind paying less to stay in the Tenderloin. The main downside of my trip was the fact that union protests were happening all over the neighborhood, so I hardly slept. But the lobby was nice, and Wi-Fi connection was strong. This is such a beautiful hotel from the moment you walk into the spacious lobby, with lounge style seating and tables for your comfort, and lovely decor and artwork all around. Service at the front desk was excellent this past weekend, super friendly, provided helpful information, and it really felt like they were going the extra mile to ensure a pleasant experience. The room was clean and modern, with cool patterns on the floor, noteworthy plant decor, comfy bedding, outlets at the bedstands, working temperature control, a fridge, large flat screen TV, updated bathroom with great water pressure in the shower, and all necessary amenities one might need. The hotel is attached to Jasper's Corner Tap and Kitchen,  so it's easy to grab some food or drinks on site, including happy hour deals Monday through Friday 3-6pm. 101 years of history in this Hotel.....I wonder what the walls would say if they could talk. The room is small, yet cozy and comfortable with warm lighting, a gigantic television, and a comfortable bed. The lobby is quite opulent and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. The location is decent as long as you don't turn the wrong way out the front door. I also enjoyed Jaspers. I just had a grab & go breakfast from the buffet as part of an event I had attended and it was top-notch. The potatoes and sausage hit the spot. There is also complimentary coffee in the lobby in the mornings. I would love to return here when I visit the city again. read more

THIS PLACE IS 101 YEARS OLD AND STUNNING. Our suite was amazing and honestly wish we could've stayed longer, already looking into another trip to stay here. I was living my best life in the living room watching the city with all the windows open. That bay breeze is a dose of serotonin. The location was ideal for us with the hotel being in the center of everything we wanted to explore. Jon was very informative with places to go and areas to avoid because the reality is there's issues in the Tenderloin, but homelessness will be experienced in every major city. We had zero encounters or issues with anyone passing by granted we ONLY passed through the area on foot during daylight hours. We're from LA so we know to walk with a purpose, watch your step, don't stare/make eye contact. Just stay aware & out of certain blocks at night. The trolly is very close by and easy to take around the city and Lyft was usually below $15 to get back. Jasper's is a great spot for a beer & food after a long day. If they're closed, hit the Irish pub a block away. Addressing previous bad reviews, our bathroom was sufficiently sized, not small at all. The toilet IS awkwardly close to the wall, but not a big deal. We also had a mini fridge that worked great, but again, we were in a suite & unsure how smaller rooms are equipped. If you want to stay in piece of history, book here. Modern, newly built hotels are vastly overrated. read more

I'll start with the pros- easy to get to, parking nearby (at $50 per night). Cons- the beds and pillows are extremely firm and difficult to get comfortable on, the air conditioning in the room doesn't work- leaving it 80 plus degrees in the room unless you open the window. The shower only has one setting to blast the water at you. When we arrived there was sticky substance on our night stand as if it hadn't been wiped. I absoutely LOVE this hotel! It's charming, the rooms are nice and have personality and the staff is incredibly friendly. I normally stay at the SF Intercontinental, but with more and more conventions coming back to SF, the prices and availability at the Intercontinental are getting ridiculous. If you've traveled to SF before, you should be aware some areas "the Tenderloin" can be a little rough and while The Hotel Spero is located on Taylor, just walking a couple blocks in the other direction, toward Union Square, you'll be fine. I definitely plan on staying here more often as the options for IHG are somewhat limited for me in the Union Square area. Parking is available nearby, as close as two doors down. Make a reservation with SpotHero and you'll also be able to find nearby parking everywhere. My three night stay was cheaper than one night valet parking at the Intercontinental. Being a Diamond Elite, I was able to upgrade to a one bedroom suite and it was great having all the extra room and it felt like having an apartment in SF. Even better than the corner junior suites at the Intercontinental. I'm really glad to have found this hidden gem and plan on staying here each time I visit SF, which is frequently. read more

Our room was amazing. We stayed in the superior Suit. Room is amazing. We went and watched Wicked at the Orpheum. We walked both ways. Did not feel we were in any danger of the homeless. We saw the 7:30 pm showing so we were walking back late. Only negative I can say is the banging and siren noises from the Hilton picketers is very annoying. Especially when your rooms face that side. I stayed in this hotel twice now. I will keep on coming back. It is strategically located in places you wanna go to. It's three blocks away from Union square. And Yes its close to the not so nice area of SF downtown but they make you feel safe with their good staff and security. Its clean and has free water and coffee. At the same time, Jasper, the restaurant on the lower level provides good food at a very decent price.The staff is highly commendable for their professionalism and friendly attitude. Awful hotel and staff. I originally booked for 5 nights but knew on the first night that I would not be staying past that night. Firstly the neighborhood is terrifying, second the only parking was $50 a night valet in a garage that reeked of urine, third upon reaching my room I immediately realized the AC was not working properly the room was scorching and humid amd would not cool down, the bathroom is tiny and the plumbing is loud obviously all they did to this place was buy chic furniture and paint. They are also THEIVES! I checked out the very next day and they will not refund the following 4 nights despite saying they would on my second call. A month, a credit card dispute, and four calls later to the same female at the front desk who suddenly has to speak to her manager, after telling me on my second call that my funds would be back on my card in a couple of days, and was supposed to get back to me by 7 tonight (of course that did not happen) and still no refund. STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK! Negative stars if I could. read more

I booked this knowing it was bordering tenderloin, but I booked it anyway. I was going to a concert at The Great American Music Hall. It was a 10 minute walk away straight down O'Farrell. The hotel itself is lovely upon entering. Rooms are recently refurbished and although it was small, it was on the 17th floor with a great view. Bed was comfy and I never heard any noise from any other rooms. But plenty of noise coming from the outside, I prefer to keep window open if possible for the breeze. Good thing I'm a heavy sleeper.staff were very nice and made check in very easy. I was given a $10 voucher for Jasper the attached restaurant but didn't use it. I tried to use for breakfast but they were swamped and just gave up. So very many small restaurants and diners nearby. You won't go hungry. The hotel is just a few blocks from Union square, Bart and market street. There was a small fridge in the room so I picked up some snacks and drinks from Trader Joe's so I could relax and enjoy the view. I would definitely stay here again when I'm next in SF! read more

Small boutique hotel. Good price. Nice room. Clean. Not enough staff. I needed help and a cart to bring my bags to my room but no one was available and they couldn't find their carts. I am handicapped and this was a problem. Luckily the security guard showed up and help me. Also when we called for towels we had to call several times over the coarse of an hour before someone picked up. Other than that our night was great, we enjoyed the room. read more

Nice hotel that has a boutique feel with all the amenities. I gave it 4 stars because it's near the tenderloin district. If you are not from SF, the tenderloin district is populated with homeless encampments. I didn't walk around my hotel area because it didn't feel like the safest part of SF. read more

Hotel Spero was a phenomenal experience! The room was clean, staff was kind, and is in a great location! Daimler at the front desk in particular went above and beyond! We arrived early and he accommodated us the kindness and professionalism. He was incredibly personable and couldn't have made our first impression of hotel spero any better. We spent two nights here and overall our experience was pleasant. Check in: lobby is bright and sunny. The decor is very modern. The clerk who checked us in was very unenthusiastic about her job. I had to ask questions to get any information from her other than here's your room key. She clearly didn't want to be there. But we got what we needed and went up to our room. There were 2 elevators and they didn't take ages to come up and down so we appreciated that. The room: as expected from reading reviews before booking, its pretty compact. Although the building is older, the rooms were remodeled and very clean! The tv is big and the bed had comfortable linens. The decor was lovely and I loved the mirrors. They provided robes and plenty of towels so that was a plus. The showerhead was large and had nice pressure and water temperature. No bathtub. The main complaint about the bathroom was the space to sit on the toilet (see picture) and there isn't really room to put your things to get ready. If someone was larger than "average" I imagine it was be a bad fit. The "view" that was advertised was just a view of the buildings in the neighborhood. Nothing special. Noise level was low. I don't think there was anyone staying around us at our end of the hallway so we slept very soundly without any complaints. Location: located in Tenderloin near Union Square. It wasn't "nice" but not the worst either. It was very easy to walk to places or take an uber. If people are complaining about homeless people, well they are every where in San Fran or any bug city for that matter, so that's unavoidable. For the price in SF it was not bad but I dont think we would stay for a longer stay than we did since it was a small room and bathroom. read more

I went into this hell hole thinking it was a great little hotel. At the time I was very sick and needed a place to sit down for a moment. I sat down on a couch in the lobby and put my backpack and phone down in front of me. Then about five minutes later I passed out and didn't wake up for almost five hours. When I did wake up my phone was gone. That is when security approached me, for the first time since I walked in, never did they try and wake me up, never did they check to see if I needed medical attention, no they only approached me after I woke up and asked me if I was a guest at the hotel. When I said no I wasn't before saying another word the security guard calls the police telling them that he had someone in the lobby refusing to leave. When I asked about my phone that's when I heard him 911 dispatch that I was becoming violent. Feeling light headed I sat back down and told security to call an ambulance for me. He failed to do so. I asked the front desk to call an ambulance, nothing, I asked a third person to call an ambulance for me and still got no response from anyone. I had to finally walk myself across the street to the Hilton and use their phone to call an ambulance for myself. Which I was then taken to the hospital where I spent the next three days for a bed infection in my arm. When I returned to the hotel to inquire about my phone I was met with nothing but hostility from security and the woman at the front desk. That's where I am writing this review from, the lobby. This place is a joke. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I am very happy with my recent stay here. Check in was easy and the location is on the edge of Tenderloin, adjacent to Hilton. The lobby is welcoming and they offer free coffee and tea as well until 10am. The room is decently sized and nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable to sleep in. I really like that this hotel has a place where you can put your unwanted clothes on a side tray/table and it will go to charity. Big kudos for helping the community out. There were no issues whatsoever during my stay and I'd love to stay here again. read more

I actually really love this hotel. The staff have always been friendly and helpful, and this time was no exception. I cannot remember the name of the kind person who took my reservation and answered a million of my questions, but I remember Daimler and Jon, who held our luggage and gave us a scent stick for our room, which was really lovely. I love the decor of this hotel and the boutique feel and especially the crisp white sheets! It is near everything. We walked to Union Square, Chinatown, and even to the Stinking Rose in North Beach (that one was a bit far). Some of the furnishings are starting to show wear, or this would have been a 5 star review, but that's understandable with a busy hotel. 5 stars for the staff, location, and value for sure, but only 4 due to wear and tear. I stayed in Hotel Spero this week for business. When I booked last minute, it was a great deal for this boutique hotel a couple blocks from union square. Upon arrival, I was upgraded and told about the restaurant available downstairs, the 24 hour gym, and free coffee and tea in the morning. My room was beautifully decorated and the bathroom was huge! I was surprised by the shower with two shower head options and doubly vanity with nice products. It was a comfy night and they even give you a Swell style water bottle to use with their filtered water machine. The lobby was perfect for pictures as it was decked out for Christmas season. Keep in mind you're staying in San Francisco, it's a beautiful city with its own level of grunge that Hotel Spero can't be faulted for. The streets were busy and I felt safe but would recommend you stay aware of your surroundings anytime you travel. Westfield mall, Union Square, and lots of restaurants and shops are walkable. Prime location, great customer service, and stylish decor means I would definitely stay again and spring for a higher floor with a view. read more

We stayed here for two nights and had no complaints. We unfortunately got a tour of the Tenderloin while driving from the airport to the hotel, and sadly saw the "fentanyl fold" times 1,000,000. That being said, we didn't book this place for the location. Parking lot was literally next door, at a rate of $50 per night. (Don't take it personally when the lot attendant, aka Mr. Personality, is rude- seems it is just his shimmering personality, as evidenced by other reviews.) But back to the hotel: our room was easily the cleanest we have ever stayed at. Our housekeeper Socorro clearly took pride in her work, and for this reason alone, we would return. The food downstairs at Jaspers is excellent!! There was fast wifi; a fridge; a safe; a water station, and complimentary coffee in the morning. Maybe the only thing we noticed could have been fixed was the toilet paper holder that was dangling out of the wall- needs a new anchor. However, since we only came here to relax at night and crash, the hotel more than served its purpose. We would definitely stay again! read more

Great hotel! Very cute, well appointed, super clean, comfortable place to stay. We were there for three nights in July and I was impressed by the property. It's got the charm that hotel chains lack and a great staff. Couple of tips: park in the garage down the street, ask for a room on a high floor, ice is located every few floors so ask when you check in where it is, coffee in the lobby each morning is delicious so take advantage of it, Jaspers for cocktails and snacks is a great choice. Front desk staff are all super friendly and have great suggestions on what to do while visiting and how to do it.....Will stay here again when back in town!! read more

Dejavu moment upon entering this hotel. Turns out it use to be called Serenity hotel which I have stayed at before. Great corner rooms with views of the city. 3rd floor is a bit close to city traffic but what would you expect. Friendly staff, comfortable beds and nice updated decor. No minibars in rooms. The only downside was the size of the bathroom, but the bathroom amenities smelled good and there were plenty of towels. The room was clean and the plant decorations were cute. They had complimentary coffee and tea on the lobby in the morning. We ordered breakfast from Jaspers, the restaurant/bar connected to the hotel. We ordered the American breakfast and avocado toast. The sourdough was delicious! There's a small garage next to the hotel that was full when we arrived. There's another Harrah's one block further and was a lot bigger and not too far of a walk. The hotel is somewhat renovated, the location is close by Union Square but also close to a very highly populated homeless community, which can be scary for small children. The rooms are extremely small. The bathroom does not have any counter space whatsoever. If you're a woman, good luck getting ready. 3 stars for the "resort fee" which is about $30 per day. The resort fee is for WiFi, mediocre coffee with non flavored creamers, and gym that honestly no one ever uses. If you are driving a car, good luck with parking. It's $58 a night even if you are staying at the hotel. Ridiculous. read more

Rooms appear to be an old building trying to be modern. There was someone else's sock left in our room when we checked in.
