They were extremely nice here, and it was easy to order from them. I don't want to dis one of the few kosher restaurants left in this part of NJ! Just a note that the pastrami (which someone had lauded here) was really disappointing (in taste and also it looked a little sad). It looks like people have loved other food here, like the falafel, and they have a ton of choices beyond just deli, so just a note that I'd recommend you try other things than the deli meats. I decided to give it a second chance after reading the reviews thinking I must've had a bad experience prior. This place is dark and not inviting, but I was willing to overlook it if the food was decent. No. I really wanted it to be, but it just wasn't good by any means. I had lunch at the Orchid after a business trip to Metuchen. This was my first time at the restaurant and I was happy with my choice of a falafel sandwich that came with delicious French fries. Pickles were placed on the table prior to the meal being served. The falafel and pita were tasty and very filling. The owner is the exclusive caterer at my synagogue, Cong. Sons of Israel in Manalapan, and I've tasted her food at kiddish and functions. I was glad that I finally got to visit the restaurant. Beyond Burger (veggie burger) was $24.00!!!! Not bad, but OBSCENELY high. Cookies were stale too.

I went with my wife to the restaurant earlier this afternoon. I encountered a young woman fiddling around with a barrel of pickles. I requested to be seated but no one decided to seat us. We decided to sit down and waited to be served. After waiting 20 minutes, my wife asked a young gentleman for menus. He gave my wife a dirty look. Subsequently we were not given menus. There were five servers in the restaurant. All the servers were more interested in putting items on a catering platter. The restaurant was completely empty on a Tuesday afternoon around 12 noon. It was completely empty other than my wife, my self and an older couple who was also waiting to be served. Finally after waiting approximately 35 minutes my wife requested to leave. We finally got up and left. A woman that worked there said we are sorry and apologized sarcastically. She provided no explanation as to why were not served. We were very disappointed by the service. My wife told the waitstaff "This is no way to treat customers". We will not be back. read more

Its a weird layout, well not weird if you are expecting a deli when you walk in, but we were not, we were thinking it was more cafe like. We almost walked out honestly because you walk into deli cases that looked empty and not well lit, then we saw a few tables in the back so we walked toward the back and we were greeted by a very friendly waitress (her friendliness was the only reason we stayed) as it felt a bit strange in there, and it was so dark...so although a bit chilly out, we asked to sit outside at one of their few sidewalk tables, she accommodated us nicely. We were served yummy homemade pickles..half sours? Yum! We ordered lentil soup, the falafel platter and a tuna, egg and potato salad platter over lettuce. The lentil soup was delicious, but a little more then halfway through I was stabbed in the cheek by what appeared to be a piece of wooden toothpick? WTH?! Maybe it was a stem in with the lentils? I don't know. Waitress apologized profusely and took it off the bill (note to other restaurants..that's the way to handle it)! This is why they are getting four stars and she received a great tip! Falafel were crispy outside and fluffy inside, perfect! Hummus was tasty, but would have preferred the Israeli salad on the side as it made the hummus watery..the pita was amazing..which sucked because we were trying to do a carb free lunch lol, but we had to have some! It was warm and puffed up and so delicious..waitress said they get it from Israel. Salad platter was good, but egg salad was too runny, too much mayo perhaps, but tasty and both platters plentiful enough that neither of us could finish our portion. read more

Really the only option for kosher meat in town and the food isn't horrible, depending on what you get. Don't order anything high end like steak because it's all gristle. Onion rings made me very nauseous but maybe that's a one time thing. Service is horrendous. There's only 1 waitress and while she's polite she cannot possibly handle a packed dining room. We had to wait a total of about 35 minutes to be seated and have our order taken. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone but unfortunately there are no other options in the area. Ordered yesterday for the first time. The owner on the phone was polite & courteous & patiently made good recommendations. Everything was delicious. The delivery guy was a very polite & courteous young man and he delivered to Staten Island. The restaurant is 33 minutes away from us in New Jersey, so it was easier to do takeout. read more

I can't judge ambiance or service, because the food was catered for a party I attended. I actually had the party a couple days ago. I just never knew where the food was from, I really liked the food from what I had at the party. We got falafel, french fries, and pasta. The falafel, and french fries were delicious and soft. Ir was definitely something I came and got seconds for. The pasta, I'll be honest, was a bit dry, and didn't really taste anything special. This is the first time we tried this place, it's been great! We ordered combination platter, hot appetizer mix, lamp tagine based on owner's recommendations, they all tastes great. The owner is so considerate to put more options in the platter for us to try them out. The lamp tagine is very delicious. On our way to a wedding in Florham Park. Decide to stop for a kosher sandwich somewhere nearby. Stumbled upon Orchid, decided to give it a try. We couldn't drive there because the town was having a street fair. No problem, park and walk in. Arrived 11:45 on a Sunday and we are the only customers, makes me wonder. Good standard Jewish kosher deli menu, we order two hot pastrami sandwiches and two diet Dr. Brown's diet cream sodas, our go-to order. No diet Dr. Browns, only black cherry (ack!). Server brings pickles, both sour and semi-sour, both excellent and apparently made in house. Sandwiches were good. Not overstuffed, which is not bad. Not super hot meat, just warm. Good deli mustard and Russian dressing. Good cole slaw. Server brought us freshly made cookies on the house, delicious. Overall opinion: good food. Can't compare to the best of NYC (2nd Avenue, Ben's) but good. Atmosphere ok, 9 table tops and a big deli counter. Service good, food came promptly and server was sweet. Guest at my company's New Jersey office and left the ordering to my colleagues. Glad that they picked The Orchid because it's been months since I've had awesome Kosher. I had the lamb kebobs over mediterranean salad...very good! The lamb was really tender and juicy. And the salad was fresh. The tahini sauce was delicious but perhaps would have been better on the side rather than all over the dish. I was with a large group and saw other stuff. Grilled veggie appetizer was impressively well seasoned. Falafel was good... Fairly standard. Everyone was happy with their entrees, with the beef stroganoff and steak looking especially nice. Our family was excited to find a true kosher restaurant. This place is a scam for service and food. 75 minutes from order to first sign of food. Then we all were served at different times. Then no corned beef no soups Then The $20 lamb burger Much the same as a 1.50 mcdonalds hamburger. The $17 turkey/pastrimi sandwich. Very little pastrimi. What a fantastic place! We passed through town and decided on a late lunch. The server was very accommodating and allowed us to order entrees from the dinner menu. All the food was well-prepared, fresh, and thoroughly enjoyable. We also placed a take-out order for someone who was unable to join us, and the take-out was just as good as the food served on-site. The attention provided by the server was first-class, and we didn't feel as though the wait for our orders was extensive. We couldn't get enough of the fresh pickles, and the server was too happy to refill our bowl again and again without a disparaging comment or displeased expression. The restaurant sports a Hechsher from the Star-K, and the prices are quite reasonable for the Hashgacha, portion sizes, freshness, and especially the location. This place keeps crazy hours. I get that it's kosher so it's closed on weekends, not a problem. But the the only time I've ever been in when it was open was when I was sick and went in the middle of the day. By the time I get home from work, closed. So I'll comment on my 1 food experience here. Matzo ball soup- a staple. The carrots/celery/chicken were sitting dry and pre-cooked before being spooned into a cup of broth and matzo balls. I was not a fan of that, the broth had no flavor (probably because no vegetables were cooked in it) and the matzo balls were entirely forgettable. The corn beef was dry and not very generous.
