Somewhat disappointed in this place. The service wasn't great - the waitress was clearly new and didn't know about the appetizer we got and wasn't sure about substitutions. The food took a long time to come out. The chicken kabab was good but not spectacular. The hummus (homus) was very heavy on the tahini. You also already get tahini on your plate. Wow - I have a high bar for Mediterranean food and Evelyn's Restaurant nailed it. The tres leches cake is unforgettably good with a light faint taste of coconut in the cream. I can't say enough things about this restaurant and our experience. We came here on my birthday and my daughter's graduation. I think it was one of the hottest days this week and when we arrived we were informed that the A/C wasn't working. Understandable, because there were power outages pretty much everywhere due to the extreme heat. Gus, the owner, went above and beyond to accommodate to us. We were seated right next to this giant fan which made a huge difference. The minute we were seated, he already had a cold beer for my husband and Prosecco for me. Minutes later an appetizer of 2 kinds of Humus and the Tabouleh salad. When I say the Homus was the BEST I ever had in my life, I am not exaggerating. It was like eating buttery mashed potato. I didn't even need the Pita bread with it, I literally just ate it with my spoon. After you try this Homus, NOTHING else compares to it. I had the shrimp platter, my hubby and another guest the Falafel sandwich and my daughter had the steak Shish Kabab. Everything was beyond delicious. What made our experience fantastic is service. And Gus has such a pleasant personality, we felt like we are at a family get together. Great conversation with him, checking up on us how everything is, the waitresses constantly assuring we were taken care of, everyone smiling. I woke up craving Lebanese food and found this place on Postmates. Not exactly what I was going for but it's "Lebanese adjace" - close enough to satisfy my craving. I wanted to be more adventurous with ordering an entree, but I decided to play it safe since it was my first time trying this place and i wasn't sure if a full entree would transport well. The food was prepared quickly, and Postmates did a great job of delivering on time. Here's what I ordered: - Lentil soup: It was good but oily and too runny, and I think there were bits of it has rice in it which was unexpected. - Turkish coffee: delicious and fragrant. No cream or sugar needed. - Falafel sandwich: The fresh pita was so fresh! A+ for that. The inside was a bit on the dry side. I should've asked for extra sauce. - Fatush Salad (regular): This was good I just wish there were more cucumbers and tomatoes and less lettuce. Went for lunch, first time back in over 10 years. The ambiance and service remained very pleasant. We ordered hummus, baba ghanouj and mjdara to share. These were pretty good, but the pita served with them wasn't my favorite. I had the felafal sandwich and it was probably one of the dryest felafal sandwiches I have had in recent memory. Could barely discern any tahini sauce; the only thing adding a bit of moisture was the bits of tomato. The indoor dining room was closed so we walked directly to the back entrance of the outdoor dining bar area. Located between Evelyn's Restaurant and Barca City Cafe & Bar is a roomy out door dining area with tables spread out surrounding the bar. Dimly lit with good music and a fun respectful crowd. The gentleman host/server welcomed us immediately with open arms and gave us a table. He gave us a menu for Evelyn's and also for Barca. My mind was blown as we were able to order from 2 different places. What a perfect night June 23rd at 11pm. A very comfortable, outdoor, laid back, loungey vibe with chill patrons, great servers, TWO MENUS, delicious food, perfect cocktails and a great price. All the food and drinks were perfect. This place is hands down delicious & awesome! A pear tree in their bar/garden patio outside seating! Extremely authentic! The spinach pies are to die for! The baba is one of the best I've ever had! Don't even need pita! I could have eaten it with a spoon! The Tabbouli is amazing! The shawarma Amazing! Especially with the rice and onions! Those who have a butter allergy, no problem they use EVOO! Thank you to the owners and bartenders for taking care of my food allergies and making me feel so welcomed! I've previously been to the bar several times for a Malibu bay breeze, but this was my first time actually dining at Evelyn's. My friend and I were very indecisive so we ended up asking the staff for recommendations, which they were more than happy to provide. We ended up splitting two appetizers - the spinach pie and falafels. My friend also got the mocktail version of the tartini, which she thought was the perfect combination of sweet and sour with a lemonade aftertaste. However, she was saddened to learn that even without the alcohol, the mocktail was the same exact price as the cocktail. The two spinach pies were too sour for my taste and the exterior wasn't flaky like I had hoped it would be. We decided to overlook the below average food ratings for the homey outdoor ambiance. It's difficult to find a green, cozy ambiance like this nestled in New Brunswick. Although pictures and reviews made Evelyn's seem beautiful outside, I was actually unimpressed with the ambiance. It was cozy, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't this super cute/romantic atmosphere I thought it would be. Compared to other Middle Eastern restaurants in the vicinity, the food was also mediocre. The spinach pies looked delicious in pictures but disappointed - 1/5 stars. The baba ganoush and falafel were good, but the hummus was just a-OK. I'm very picky with pita... and I thought the pita was too thin and rubbery. There's lots of competition in the area, and Evelyn's outdoor bar definitely takes the cake for bar setting, but certainly needs to step up their game on food. Came in during lunch time and because of Covid19 the seating is in the back outdoors. No one welcomed us we stood there for a few minutes then we had to get someone inside to let them know. Tucked away inside the heart of New Brunswick, NJ is A restaurant that has a flare for casual elegance. On a random Tuesday afternoon I decided to stroll and ordered the best spinach pies appetizer. Service was quick the staff was very friendly and they offer an indoor and outdoor experience. On some days they have live music playing. I'd gone to Evelyn's YEARS ago for a drink in their luscious "backyard" bar.. I love dining and drinking outside, especially during the warmer months of the year. When we stopped by for a drink after dining next door at Barca, my mom said she wanted to return for a casual celebration of her birthday the following week. I can't tell you how easy it was for me to make the arrangements with the ladies who answered the phone. I wish I had their names, but all of my questions and accommodations were handled with ease. When it came down to the day of, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves... as it was 4th of July weekend. It was a great thing, because we had our own little semi private gathering. Expecting roasted eggplant, we received some type of possibly canned eggplant that was swimming in its sour taste. We would call it more of an eggplant soup rather than an eggplant salad. We asked for it to be sent back after giving it a try. They noted that this is how the salad usually comes and took it back luckily. We also ordered the hummus, baba ganoush and labneh which were all delicious! The pita bread is subpar; it's thin and stales quickly outside. And for drinks, the white sangria wasn't my favorite- it was mixed with pineapple juice which masked the taste, but to each their own! The bar was perfectly placed amongst the sprawling outdoor seating area where there was both bartop, high top and regular sitting. You could fit a large array of group, couples, etc. back there. The potential of an outdoor, back-patio vibe was there-with long strands of string lights intermingling around the foliage and bar-BUT like I stated, the service takes away what could have been. The bartender was smoking at the bar while taking up a seat. I understand we came around 7:30 but still, dude, don't smoke on the job. He was quick to take our drink orders, but we had to stop a waitress about 20 minutes later to receive any menus. She had to then get the bartender up from his chair, put out his cigarette, put down his phone, and come and get our order. We order the grape leaf appetizer and it was fine-can't really go wrong there. Potential ambiance was there, follow through? Not so much. They weren't empty, they just didn't have a line down the street. For what it's worth, the server did a great job handling our group during a busy time. She was on the ball the entire time. The food was just okay. I had the falafel and it had a touch of cinnamon, or something similar, that made it taste a little off. The vegetarian moussaka and baba ghanoush weren't overly flavorful and I've had better. I went to Evelyn's today at around 6:30 PM. The day was beautiful and I thought it would be wonderful time to visit Evelyn's, where I had good experiences the couple of times I had visited before. I entered and sat down at the bar with my partner. The bartender took our orders and then proceeded to ignore us for twenty minutes. She was the only one working the indoors bar and we were the only patrons sitting at the bar. Once she took our orders, and then she ran back and forth between the kitchen, outdoors bar and indoors bar for about 5 minutes. She returned, doubled checked the orders that I had put in 5 minutes earlier, and then she then put up the "one second" finger as she walked away. 10 minutes later, she brought out the first drink. She then walked away again and went to the outdoors bar. 10 minutes later, she brought out the second drink. I put my hand out to hand her the payment and she again, looked at me and walked away. We left the untouched drinks and left the establishment. While I have experience in the service industry and understand how busy things can get, it is simply unacceptable to blatantly ignore customers. I am also not certain if it was because it was busy or simply because my partner and I were both young and black. I don't think I need to give this bartender (young, blonde woman) the benefit of the doubt. I will not be returning and I can't recommend this establishment to anyone, despite how good the food may be. read more

We use Yelp almost every time we look for someplace to eat out. This time it was a swing and a hard miss. Due to reviews on Yelp, I wanted spinach. It is all within Yelp reviews and photos and on the menu but the restaurant no longer has spinach. "They are not allowed to sell it." Then he kept trying to get me to order the spinach pie but Yelp reviews were bad, so thanks no. The best parts of our meal was the bread served with my husbands "not so much a chicken gyro" (it was more like a skewer with gyro sides and the chicken was very salty) and the seasoned beef on my baba ganoush. Not to confuse the microwave warmed naan-like bread which came out of a plastic bag for our hummus appetizer. Oh- and my husband said the beer was nice and cold. After a day in New York, we wanted a quiet meal together. Our waiter was way too attentive. He approached our table at least 15-20 times in the hour we were there eating. It was annoying. About 10 minutes after we ordered our shared appetizer -- the Maza Plate platter comprised of "tabouleh, homus and baba ghanoug" -- our server returned to say that the kitchen was entirely overwhelmed (even though the restaurant was not crowded at all) and she was unable to put in our order. Waiting.. Another 10 minutes went by before she returned with a basket of thin, cold pita bread for us to munch on while waiting for our appetizer. Waiting.. Over the next 30 minutes, the server returned to apologize once, but she still had no idea when she might be able to put our order in. Waiting.. after almost an hour -- and no food arriving at our table -- we apologized to the waitress, got up and walked out of the restaurant. On the way to the door, an older gentleman - who appeared to be the owner - came up to us and asked us not to leave because our order would be coming out to the table soon. "Soon"? I'm of the opinion that a restaurant should not need an hour to prepare a dish that doesn't even require cooking. The best authentic Lebanese food despite the unpredictable happenings of a business in a college town in the middle of the college ghetto. They do what others cannot so any bad reviews you see here should be discounted as musings of whiny, over-privileged, know-nothings who have no compassion for the stressed and stretched staff and owners. One taste of the Mujadara or their Kibbe and a real Lebanese food aficionado will know this is the real deal. Anyone who complains about the pita don't know what real pita is. You probably like Thomas' pita in a bag from Stop 'n Shop. If you don't like the Hummus or Baba Ganouj, learn how to spell it correctly because it is a tell tale sign you are not Lebanese or knowledgeable of real Lebanese cuisine. Great place for drinks after work. They have delicious $9 cocktails that Natalie made perfectly. She was so friendly and welcoming. The decor in the back makes you feel like you're not in New Brunswick. Tried the hummus and it was delicious and very fresh. Ordered it as a while drinking snack. Try the Kentucky dirty !
