There was plenty of hot water and good water pressure. There were plenty of towels and they were clean. The floor is appeared to be clean. Now for the not so good part. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a dirty rag that was probably used to clean the shower that was hanging over the shower curtain rail to dry. See attached photo. That was just nasty. The second thing I noticed was that the blankets on the bed just didn't feel clean. They felt grimy. Kind of like a pair of jeans that have been worn too many times between washing. There wasn't any visible dirt, but they did not feel clean and I can tell the difference. I stay in motels a lot and I'm surprised at how many comfortable beds I get and this one wasn't. It was uncomfortable. But at least when I got up in the morning and went to make a cup of tea two of the coffee cups, that I looked at were dirty. I took photos of them and attach them to the review. I don't know if Tim the manager who was not quite rude, but rather short with me on the phone is the person who cleans the rooms or somebody else but whoever it is, they are sloppy or lazier or whatever but they're not cleaning the rooms properly. I think the two stars is very justified in this case. I sure won't be coming back the extra hour drive to Condon will be well worth a good nights sleep in a clean comfortable room for 40 bucks more.

It was clean and comfortable, had a fridge and microwave. I highly recommend this mom and pop hotel to anyone in the area and would gladly come again. Arriving, we found a trim, inviting Front Street, Hotel Prairie on the east end. Juniper Dining Room closed Monday and Tuesday. This cornerstone of days gone by is a labor of love. I got a bed and breakfast feeling mixed with vacation stay faborite feeling. There's a community kitchen at the end of the hall - for those awkward Monday and Tuesday morning meals. It is an old hotel, redone well. Our room was quiet, sleep deep. The bathroom had a handicap shower if we were inclined. Our headboard was a reused old door. Very nice. If you are headed through or to Prairie City and day is running low, Try Hotel Prairie. We would again.

In a former timber town with limited opportunities, closed businesses aren't that rare. We had to double back to it. Not sure how it is in the summer, but if you like sleeping in a cold room, this was that rare place (in April) where partner did not immediately turn on the AC full bore. No need to do that this time, nor even to mess with the temp. Not sure how well the warming works because we never wanted it. If there was a major frustration, I'd say it was thin walls. All the signs (too many) that tell you what you can and can't do include some that specify quiet hours, and that's fine, but it does leave you turning the TV down very low because you've been hearing the neighbors' TV for hours.

Not the original hot springs or the original building at this hot springs but nonetheless, this is…read morea historic site with an old gold mining camp alongside the river, two suspension bridges, a more than hundred-year old hotel and concrete pool filled with warm hot springs water. There are rustic rooms for rent in the hotel, lawns for camping, a few RV sites and a couple of beautifully built modern cabins. The middle fork of the John Day river babbles along night and day and when the moon is high, you can see its sparkling reflection in the water. Though things are rustic here, the restroom is kept clean with soap and towels for hand washing and the toilet paper never runs out! You won't hear TVs here or people on their cell phones. It's very quiet and relaxed. We camped here for five days, which felt like a short lifetime. We cooked delicious meals on our camp stove and ate dinner at a picnic table under a dusky sky while watching for mule deer in the surrounding hills. One night we saw a rainbow in the sunset with a waxing moon. Magical! The secret is out about Ritter and the word is the cabins - which are an incredible deal at about $80/night for one that sleeps 6 - are booked months in advance. It's closed here in winter, as it's cold and snowy. We came in early summer, late June, and the hillsides were exploding with wildflowers. Mock orange grows wild along the riverbank here and the smell of the blossoms, in early evening especially, is heavenly. We also saw profusions of daisies, vetch, lupine, yarrow, cornflower, coreopsis, paintbrush and wild rose. There are a number of short walks from the hot springs that you can take to see deer, get panoramic views or just get some exercise. In late summer, it's much hotter but the river provides convenient refreshment. Every day that we were there, it got busier as it approached the weekend. Most people were just coming through for one night but a few groups, like ours, stayed for several days. On Sunday, everyone was packing up to leave. If you're looking to avoid crowds, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday is the time to be here! A few notes about the establishment. The owners are Seventh Day Adventist so it's posted that they don't allow alcohol consumption on the property, though I think people do, discretely. They also close the pool from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday and drain it and pressure clean it on Thursday night so it's essentially out of commission on Friday as well. We felt no other repression from the owners, though, they and the caretakers are extremely friendly and helpful and will help you get whatever you need. Dogs are allowed, there are a few campfire pits and a BBQ grill, there is plenty of fresh drinking water available and the best feature, in my opinion, is the hot spring fed outdoor shower that dumps 108 degree hot spring water on you, riverside. There's also a washing machine and clotheslines. It's pretty much a make-yourself-at-home kind of place. Camping runs $11/night. For historians, there's also the old store and café which is half in ruins but has a few dusty shelves of old photographs, school registers, and other bits of old things to look at, dating the establishment back to the early 1900's. Almost forgot, there is a row of the original hot springs tubs still open and in use, they're small concrete tubs with a shelf to sit on and a rickety wood structure built around. Still, the water is hot and it's a decent soak.

We got there, pleaded with the first family to occupy, called Michael, and he offered a half-hearted apology. Not including the gas, food, and travel this trip was a major waste of time. I would only go there if I was already driving through that part Oregon. Thank you Michael for your poor organization/business skills. The spot is pretty, and secluded - the owners fear of cancellations ruined the trip. Don't waste your time.
